Today was our first official day of prep on Dark Matter’s second season. Yeeeeah! Following a props meeting to discuss “the claw”, we all hopped in the van and headed over to our second stage for a tour of the sets-in-progress with Episode 201 director Amanda Tapping.

“So future prison like Japanese capsule hotel!” – Akemi. Yep.
Love the detail that went into the corridors. Doors are, of course, of the sliding variety. Floor will be faux-metal similar to what we have on The Raza. 
High angle overviews of the various sets in our new stage. I envision a James Bond set roof hop sequence somewhere down the line.
As always, it’s the little details that really make a set – and Production Designer Ian Brock is a stickler for details! Check out this ceiling element that will house an overhead fan in the antechamber outside solitary.
Our first concept meeting went off without a hitch, setting up tomorrow’s festivities:
9:30 : Episode 201 Art Dept / Set Dec Meeting
10:30 : Episode 201 Props Meeting
14:30 : Episode 201 Stunt / SPFX Meeting
15:30 : Episode 201 Wardrobe Meeting
9 days to the commencement of principal photography on Dark Matter’s second season! You ready?
Whew! An exhausting day. It’s so nice to finally be home…
So I can finally get to work on those blue pages for Episode 201 – and, time permitting, make some headway into the fifth act of that other script.
No doubt that, in a few hours from now, I’ll be feeling like these two:
Those are some truly impressive sets. Almost makes me wish I were a space criminal so I could hang out in a cell for a while.
I’m also betting it’s only 2 episodes before Five starts crawling around in those “ceiling elements”.
I agree with @Akemi about the Japanese capsule hotel. Although, don’t they fit multiple beds in those?

I agree with Tom Gardiner. Make sure those sets are sturdy enough to hold Five for when she starts crawling around in those “ceiling elements” and visiting the others. Beautiful set!! In that first picture, ya know, a swimming pool and a little lawn furniture and you’d have a well designed Holiday Inn. The crew must be going to be there awhile or until Five saves their butts. Or Two does. Or the Android does. Leave it to the girls to save the boys. 😉
I see you are creating an alternate living space for the next time you have trouble finding a decent apartment in Toronto – season 3.

That looks like an awesome set that any actor and/or crew member would LOVE to work/play on!!! Of course, when someone get a job they *truly* love, work does seem a lot more like play!!! Lucky ducks…. 🙂

Just wondering if Amanda ever mentions her experiences using all the green screens in Sanctuary? The digital sets there were amazing. I’d imagine shooting on solid built sets is quite different from green screen at least.
Have any of our cast expressed how they feel about working part of the season in a prison?
I agree with Ponytail and Tom to expect Five will soon be exploring along the ceiling elements, fan or no fan.

By the way: Patricia’s housing comment reminds me I still need to get those housing option details for seasons 3-5, I spent 4 wks researching, organized, typed up and sent your way. No worries. Haven’t forgotten. Life and work should be returning to a more manageable pace after the holidays.

It is amazing how it goes from concept art to reality. A capsule-hotel-like situation for prisoners in the future is actually a pretty decent thing. You should come visit a Texas prison. No air-conditioning and you know how hot it gets here, the stench of sweat and urine and cigarettes. When Jeff used to work for a law firm, they had to do a certain amount of pro bono work. And the lawyers wouldn’t go–they would make their paralegals go for depositions. Jeff got cat-calls walking in the jail area. Think more Vin Disel in The Chronicles of Riddick when he goes to that superrmax prison on that planet Crematorium.
