In case you hadn’t heard, we finally have our cast: https://www.nbcumv.com/news/syfy-announces-casting-new-acquired-scripted-series-dark-matter?network=33143

“NEW YORK – December 18, 2014 – Syfy today announced casting of the new acquired scripted series Dark Matter, which will feature Melissa O’Neil (Broadway production of Les Miserables), Marc Bendavid (Bitten), Anthony Lemke (White House Down), Alex Mallari Jr. (Robocop) and Jodelle Ferland (Twilight) with Roger Cross (The Strain) and Zoie Palmer (Lost Girl).

The series begins production in Toronto on January 7.

Created by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie (executive producers and writers of the Stargate franchise), and developed with Prodigy Pictures (Lost Girl, XIII), the 13 one-hour episodes are based on the graphic novel Dark Matter by Mallozzi and Mullie, published by Dark Horse Comics.

Dark Matter will premiere on Syfy in Summer 2015, joining Syfy’s stable of acquired international and domestic co-productions ranging from the hit series Z Nation to popular programs such as Lost Girl, Bitten and Continuum, and the upcoming series Olympus.

Executive producers are Jay Firestone, Joseph Mallozzi, Paul Mullie and Vanessa Piazza. The series will be distributed internationally by Endemol Worldwide Distribution.

In Dark Matter, the crew of a derelict spaceship is awakened from stasis with no memories of who they are or how they got on board. Facing threats at every turn, they have to work together to survive a voyage charged with vengeance, betrayal and hidden secrets.”

December 18, 2014: Introducing The Dark Matter Cast!

Marc Bendavid as ONE (aka Jace Corso, aka Pretty Boy)

Charming but a bit of a goof, he is the crew’s moral center, a guy who always TRIES to do the right thing, despite the odds stacked against him and no matter how unpopular the course of action. He is a space cowboy, a bit of a daredevil, and the closest thing to a hero onboard the ship. Sure, he screws up – but he means well.

December 18, 2014: Introducing The Dark Matter Cast!

Melissa O’Neil as TWO (aka Portia Lin, aka Boss Lady)

The group’s defacto leader, she is a master fighter and an unbelievably quick learner when it comes to weaponry. Determined, tough, and more than a little headstrong, she is not the type you want to mess with – or disappoint. She can be cool and inscrutable and yet, at the same time, can demonstrate surprising compassion – the mark of true leader.

December 18, 2014: Introducing The Dark Matter Cast!

Anthony Lemke as THREE (aka Marcus Boone, aka Sunshine)

A true bad-ass, he is the flip side to ONE’s principled coin – which is why the two are often at odds, developing a (grudging) like-hate relationship over the course of their journey. He is mercenary through-and-through, a Hans Solo type, always looking out for himself. But he must come to accept the fact that, if he’s going to survive long enough to reach the outer colonies, he’s going to have to learn to get along.

December 18, 2014: Introducing The Dark Matter Cast!

Alex Mallari Jr. as FOUR (aka Ryo Tetsuda, aka Ryo Ishida)

Ever-stoic and a master of the blade, his cool, calm demeanor belies a ruthlessness that gives even his fellow crew members pause. He’s a man of few words but, when he does speak – just like when he fights – it’s with precise efficiency. A fierce and relentless opponent, he is also an equally loyal and passionate friend.

December 18, 2014: Introducing The Dark Matter Cast!

Jodelle Ferland as FIVE (aka Das, aka Kid)

The ship’s colorful mascot with a knack for mechanics, she’s also possessed of some mysterious abilities – like an inexplicable knowledge of past lives not her own.  She’s the kid with all the secrets. And a propensity for getting into trouble. Easily bored, quick to mouth off, she is nevertheless a relative innocent among less savory company.

December 18, 2014: Introducing The Dark Matter Cast!

Roger Cross as SIX (aka Griffin Jones)

On the surface he’s a low-key bruiser, an imposing figure among a group of intimidating individuals. Despite the company he keeps, he is a man of integrity with little patience for bullshit. Cross him at your own risk. Beneath the rough and tumble exterior, however, is a heart of gold – 14k, the softest! A surprisingly simple guy, his quiet confidence belies a fierce intelligence and philosophical nature.

December 18, 2014: Introducing The Dark Matter Cast!

Zoie Palmer as The Ship’s Android (aka The Android)

In personality, she is more butler-like than your typical robot – concise, staid, yet surprisingly possessed of a subtly wry sense of humor, she is an indispensible member of the crew since she can exercise control over all the ship’s systems. And she isn’t shy about reminding everyone of the fact. An outsider among the ship’s human passengers, she is almost child-like in her earnest desire to fit in.

  1. Well, I got one right with Jodelle Ferland way back when you asked us for our choices. What happened to Ivon Bartok as the android? You were pulling our legs weren’t you? Ha Ha…good one.

  2. Ah, okay – Alex Mallari Jr.(Four) wasn’t mentioned in the list I looked at – weird. Anyways – yes, he’s doable…:) I mean, doable in the role of Four, not DOable doable in any sort of naughty way… I mean, not that he’s NOT doable, but that it would be supercreepy for me to suggest such a thing about a real person when he may be reading the blog and we’re not even on first name basis or anything and…am I digging myself into a hole here? Because it sure as heck feels like I am…

    😳

Also good to see Marc Bendavid in the list – I remember him from an episode of Murdoch Mysteries. Surprised to see Zoie as the Android, but that’s doable, too (doable in the role, I mean…not DOable doable….oh, nevermind 😛 ).

    das

  3. I like the fresh casting. Only one I was familiar with is Roger Cross from The Strain/Continuum and I think I saw Jodelle Ferland in a few things like the Silent Hill movie..

  4. Looks like an awesome cast! Love Jodelle Ferland. I’m a Silent Hill (the movie) fan and she was great in Atlantis when she manhandled McKay in….. what was that episode?…(snapping my fingers)… Harmony!

“Jodelle Ferland as FIVE (aka Das, aka Kid)” Das? As in our Das? As in D as in Danger, Das? That Das? Nice tribute to an old blog regular. She’ll be in tears!

  5. I must be getting old because they all seem so young! Except for Kid (wait . . . “Das”!? Is she named after who I think she’s named after? Feel free to name a character “Line Noise” if you want. Or at least have The Android mention it when there’s computer problems. 🙂 ) who I always imagined as being about 8 years old. But, as you said in an earlier blog, working with kids is problematic.

The only actor I’ve seen before is Roger Cross. He’s pretty good but usually ends up playing very similar characters. Hopefully you’ll give him the chance to mix it up a bit!

Summer 2015 seems a long way away! I bet it doesn’t for you!

  6. See, Lexa Doig has always said that there’s a special clause in ALL Canadian productions that says Roger Cross and/or Brian Markison MUST have a part…*snerk*…that clause still stands obviously….

Seriously Roger is awesome in everything he does….good luck to him…

    1. “See, Lexa Doig has always said that there’s a special clause in ALL Canadian productions that says Roger Cross and/or Brian Markison MUST have a part…”

      Don’t forget Mike Dopud!

Now that you mention it, I was thinking earlier about how Brian Markison played virtually the same character in Continuum and Caprica.

  7. Reblogged this on Gatecast and commented:
Now by any stretch of the imagination that’s a strong cast for the show mixing some very well established names with some younger actors.

  8. Whelp, I was always going to watch the show, but seeing as you managed to snag Zoie Palmer it just became must see TV.

  9. Roger Cross is a wonderful piece of casting, you pretty much almost described his Continuum character.

@Despite the company he keeps, he is a man of integrity with little patience for bullshit
    @an imposing figure
@Cross him at your own risk

Reminded me so much of his Travis Verta character.

  10. @ Ponytail – But would you describe ‘me’ as ‘quick to mouth off’??

No need to answer that out loud. 😉

    😛

    das

  11. Joe – my biggest question is this – will 4 be long-locked, or sheered? Or will I have to wait and see?

    das

  12. That is one attractive cast. The only actors I am familiar with are Roger Cross (from Continuum and I think he was in The Strain as well), Jodelle Ferland (wasn’t she on either some Smallville or Supernatural episodes?), and Zoie Palmer. I have to say I thought the android would be a male character, but I’m glad to see a female android character. I’m also glad to see various races represented. Best of all: summer 2015 release window!! For some reason, I expected this to come out in the Fall of 2015.

Just please tell me: is Dark Matter actually set in space? Please don’t let this be another social experiment where all the characters are actually on Earth and just don’t realize it, lol.

  13. I think that’s a great cast! I’ve seen Ferland before (obviously, she’s pretty great), Cross and Palmer. The others are new to me. But I can’t wait to see them all on screen.

  14. Don’t really know most of these actors but good for Jodelle, I loved her in Harmony. I was really hoping to see a few more people from the Stargates though, I miss them so much. 🙂

  15. Jodel Ferland ! good. Let us see the others. Looks promissing. I am desapointed of course that some others SG actors did not come back with you.
I am looking forward to watching the show next summer!

    1. Thanks, Max. Let me know if you’d like to sit down to a Dark Matter discussion at some point down the line.

      Joe

  16. Looks like a good group Joe. I too was hoping for S G people but you are the expert so I’m sure they will all be fantastic. Congratulations to all. Filled with great anticipation!

  17. That Five is “aka Das” is beyond awesome! It’s a great looking cast, and I’m already started to visualize these folks in their roles as portrayed in the book and what a good fit they’ll be. I can’t wait to see what they bring to their characters.

  18. always lovely to have faced to go with the names. Excited to see the cast and even more excited to see the show. Welcome to all the cast.

  19. Very excited to see Zoie Palmer in a new role. Love her as Dr. Lauren Lewis on Lost Girl. Anthony Lemke and Roger Cross are great too, Not very familiar with the others, but sounds like a great cast.

  20. I can see why Joe hasn’t gone for former cast members, if anything let Dark Matter be Dark Matter and Stargate be Stargate on their own merits. When reading reports about Dark Matter, I would rather only see the word Stargate mentioned when talking about Joe and Paul, and not on people they’ve cast in the series. I think they both deserve a chance to really make Dark Matter huge.

  21. All right, ready to do some smooth sailing now by gosh! Awesome casting! Looking forward to the show.

  22. That is awesome…. I like Jodelle and Roger, looking forward to getting to know the rest. Way to go Das!!! I see you went with a female Android rather than Ivon…. hmmm a tad disappointed but I’m sure she’ll be awesome ;).

I’m just over here second-guessing my line-up for the Fantasy Football Championship Round… this is for all the bickies…. well just bragging points but that is something…. off to see Mockingjay with my niece tonight.

Say Joe, have I missed the announcement of Stunt Co-ordinator? Who is that going to be?

    Best wishes to all

    Chev

  23. Nevermind I just scrolled down and saw his name – John Stead. Just IMDB’d him – cool. He looks like an FBI agent.

    Cheers, Chev

  24. Not surprised you cast Jodelle. I’m not familiar with any of these others, I think. Looking forward to seeing them in action. It’s neat that you cast a woman as the android. I’m hoping she’ll be the Data of this show, though she also kinda sounds like your standard Star Wars protocol droid. I hope you do some kind of makeup on her so that she looks like something other than a normal human.

  25. hey everybody!
Happy Christmas holidays to everybody! and a happy 2015 (summer ;))

Ok.. so .. Melissa O’Neil… we have moved on from O’Neill with 2 Ls then! man! what has the world come to? 🙂

I am sorry but I have not read the comics Dark Matter so far, just wanted to say that the crew waking up from stasis with no memories is a super idea! I have recently seen Pandorum which goes along the same line, and I find the idea just bril!! so much is possible with that script! wow! so looking forward to it!

Continuum’s idea was great, although the second series got boring, especially the 2d half, not sure is there a series 3 in the making, but I doubt it. I would say that the series went as far as one could get with the script to be fair. But clad to see Cross / Travis is part of the cast! congrats on the cast by the way! It should rally a good fan base followers of the other shows! Sci-fi is a family after all!

Much love to everybody, especially to Joe, Akemi, the crew, the fans, the blog readers, Bubba and the super dogs !

    ps: can’t wait for summer 2015 already !! 😉

I agree, it was an almost unique premise with a lot of potential.

  26. “Feel free to name a character “Line Noise” if you want. Or at least have The Android mention it when there’s computer problems. 🙂”

    That would have been cool!
