  1. Ugh…however did I forget the Yamato… 😛 Add that one to my list, most definitely. 🙂

    das

  2. I think Spaceballs had it right that Winnebego has a good model to base a practical spaceship on. They have been thinking through the problems of making a live-able environment out of the bare minimum of space in a 1G environment for decades. Don’t bother envisioning that W.C. when they already figured out how to put the toilet in the shower stall. If you’re looking for armament as an afterthought to the idea of traveling with your home, the movie Stripes covers how that is done.

  3. I think your writing team should go on a Winnebego road trip to give you a feel for the lifestyle. And then send the actors, too.

  4. I thought this post interesting in that the ship designs you mentioned earlier and my watching Captain America on my flight to the grand East reminded me of the cartoon “Yamato”. I watched it as a kid.

Speaking of ship designs, Babylon5 really had an impressive array of ship designs. CGI , while nice for its time has come a long way, don’t you think?

I hope the weather in Tokyo is more temperate during your trip than it was yesterday at about 30c and muggy. From Minneapolis to Houston to Tokyo to Bangkok I would have been hard pressed to tell you which city I was in from the atmospheric conditions. In honor of your foody tradition I think I will try to step outside the box and try to expand my culinary horizons.

  5. I forgot about the Vorlon space ship and a couple I didn’t recognize, but a great list of ships. 😀

  6. This one’s easy the SDF-1 because it transforms into a giant robot with a giant gun that can wipe out an entire fleet in one shot plus several squadrons of bad ass veritech fighter planes plus there is a city inside.and they best weapon of lynn minmei.

  7. As far as Star Trek ships I also like the Defiant and Voyager. Both have very sleek designs. Stargate’s Destiny was pretty nice as well as were the Asgard ships.

  8. I don’t know most of the anime ships you listed but you’re pretty much spot on with the ships I recognise.

The Enterprise is such a great design. Keeping the engines and warp nacelles away from crew quarters is a good idea. I’m sure that wasn’t the original intention when they designed the ship but the idea was nicely retrofitted into it.

  9. I’ve been subscribed to that Star Trek Starships magazine since day one. It’s a fairly dull generic magazine, but the little ship models are lovely! No silly “partwork” or even fiddly model making. Each issue = 1 ship, ready made!! Lazy man’s ship collection FTW!!!

But there are 2 slight issues.
    1. They’re fairly rapidly taking up all my shelf-space!
    2. After a while, a lot of the Star Trek ships kinda look a bit samey, especially when you have an entire fleet of ships sat next to each other..

Would be nice if it was a more generic “Random Starships” magazine… Some of your list would look lovely as extra models in the collection!

  10. Oh love the Romulan Warbird…
Haven’t been here a while but scrolling to see what you’re up to now…. I’m starting to get wide eyed…you’re designing a ship???????????????? 😮

  11. Hi,
good choice! You are right Klingon and Ropmulan are cool. Also many many ships from Star Wars saga are fantastic.

  12. Okay, a little pedantic, but your Serenity photo is backwards…the port navigation light should be red, not green. 🙂

My favorite for a long time was the Star Wars X-Wing. I scratch built a model rocket based on that design once in my youth and it was the most stable model rocket I had. For a trans atmospheric fighter, they got the aerodynamics of it right (at least for the ballistic phase of flight).

  14. Were you intending on displaying the Galactica or the Pegasus? The picture is Pegasus…
