Received an email from Marty G. who wanted to add a little something to the discussion on fan behavior at a recent con. Writes Martin:
“Although the odd fan was incredibly rude, the VAST majority of fans were incredibly generous, polite and enthusiastically positive about the shows (Stargate fans raised 28k for Lupus this year…which is basically MOST of the money raised at Dragon*Con). Anyway, I just wanna make sure people know that a couple of rotten apples didn’t spill the bunch and we all had a great time…”
Really great to hear it.

Melissa writes: “I just wanted to remind you that just because a small group of people misbehave at an event, it doesn’t mean that all of us are that rabid.”
Answer: Hey, Melissa – yes, the vast majority of fans are great. Even the majority of those fans who have criticized SGU have done so in a respectful, constructive manner. Unfortunately, there will always be that rude, vocal minority out there who give fandoms a bad name.
Lewis writes: “…if SGU goes off the air after this season then there won’t be any Stargate programming going on. And if the lights are out at the studio then that means nothing is being filmed… not a TV show, not a movie, not even any behind-the-scenes antics. However if Universe does get renewed for a 3rd season, because of good ratings during Season 2, then that means that the ball keeps rolling… it greater increases the possibility of Stargate movies.”
Answer: And that pretty much sums it up. Some fans are under the delusion that an end to SGU will mean a return of Atlantis as a series or, at the very least, a fast-tracking of the Atlantis movie. In fact, the opposite is true. First of all, there are no circumstances by which Atlantis would return for a sixth season. As nice as it would be to see all those story ideas we’d filed away go to script and, ultimately, into production, it can’t happen – and anyone who claims otherwise is either clueless or lying. Given recent developments, the outlook for both the SG-1 and Atlantis movies has improved, and will continue to improve so long as Stargate: Universe continues strong.

Answer: I’ve responded to this issue countless times. Being new to this blog, you must have missed the various entries.

Answer: It’s a form of stasis. Intriguing.

Now THAT is an entertainment room, a big bar, an even bigger TV, leather recliners, Stargate DVDs and awards. Everytime you post pictures of Rob I get more and more jealous of that guy, at the Cowboys playoff game, his cooking, and now his house! All but the exception last year when he was on crutches and you had to carry him up and down the stairs, which you still refuse to do for Ashleigh. I mean come on, you could remind her about it all the time. Like when you need someone to pick up the cheque at dinner, or you’re working late and need to pick up the dogs from doggycare. It’s like a blank IOU that never expires.
So you’re a Sun Devils fan or are you rooting for ASU to annoy Carl? As a grad student and teaching assistant at ASU I may be able to hook you up with some maroon and gold gear. I will also brag a little and say I’ve had a couple of ASU’s first string in my class – luckily they playfootball better than they did in bio. (And we appear to have lost our party-school ranking – we’re no longer in the top 10.)

Person X enters a stargate a long, long time ago, and finally, present day, the destination stargate is made available, and (poof!) out pops Person X, who should be about 46,000,000 years old now but is still young. 😮

What would initiate finally making that connection once the second stargate is made available?
Would the stargate just suddenly make a connection with no real rhyme or reason (well, with none known to the people where that stargate is) or would it require attempting to dial in or out with that stargate from that location before it would, instead, end up completing the 46mya connection from the other stargate?

@Adam I teared up when I read your beautiful tribute to Ugg. There never is enough time, no matter how long they’re with us. My thoughts are with you both.

I’m wondering if you could ask Martin Gero to be a little more specific with regards to the Dragon*Con incident you mentioned. Several people commented in your previous post pointing out that none of the video supports the allegation that Alaina Huffman was harrassed. People who attended all of the panels said the same thing. I didn’t get to all of the cast panels, but I know that on Saturday, the only thing I can think of that might be related was the near-complete silence when Mr. Gero asked how many people in the audience watched SGU. I can’t remember very many questions directed to Ms. Huffman at all; most of the questions were for Michael Shanks, Paul McGillion, or the whole panel.

I had been looking forward to some sort of reveal showing the meeting that took place between Rush and Home World Command (ie. O’Niell) when using the stones for the first time in Air. But, I saw a fan made trailer, on this blog I think, showing a clip from that meeting? (Rush saying he did it, he made the connection and couldn’t shut it off) Did I miss something? I didn’t miss an episode of Season 1, watching it on Sky in Ireland.
Also, In Air pt 3, Rush blames Greer for shooting the scientist who ends up in the chair, but no-one seems to react to it.

I’ve been to Dragon*Con every year for several years now, and when something untowards happens at a panel, people talk about it. They talk about it a lot. You’ll hear about it even if you’re not in that fandom, and you’ll definitely hear about it if you are.
So I’m curious as to why you’re the only person who’s heard about anything like this at any SG panel. I was at an awful lot of them with fans who love SGU and fans who hate it, and while I heard a lot from all of them about the panels they attended, I heard nothing like this, nor anyone talking about anything like this.
So either SG fandom has suddenly become shockingly circumspect and closed-mouthed, or the reports you say you’re getting from “various individuals” leave a lot to be desired in the way of accuracy.
Hope you are discussing(Masked) for a couple days, gotta take a trip, hoping not to miss anything. I know, get a life, well I got one, and its groovy baby. ha, I can hear Mike Myers saying that and have to laugh.

OK two things,
The first is, over on GW they (mods) are saying you post things each year at this time to get the fans riled up and your blog traffic increased.
And that this DragonCon thing is one such post.
I’m OK with that, you are good at marketing…
The second is regarding the alleged threat to “bitch-slap” an actress if the slapper were on Destiny. Doesn’t that imply that the person was talking about the characters, not the actual people?
And since when is wanting to slap a TV character rude or insulting? A lot of movie/tv characters are created in such a way that people are annoyed by them and want to whack them upside the head. ( Lucius, Kavanaugh, etc….)
I mean, you writers have gone as far as to KILL characters, doesn’t mean you despise the actors who played Janet, Ford, Carson, Weir, Daniel(mulitple times),and so forth. Just that that’s what happens to characters on a fictional show.
I just never understand how peoples dislike of or annoyance at, a particular character translates to being rude or insulting to the actor.
I LOVE Jewel Staite till the ends of time as an actor, but the character she played on SGA was not my favorite. Has nothing at all to do with Jewel as a person.

Well, I still like Mr. Cooper, despite his poor taste in teams. I hope he did not suffer a bout of depression,high blood pressure, or stroke when the last second TD was called back. On the plus side, from his point of view, is that the Deadskins continue to show their penchant for giving away victories. If the rest of the season follows that example, it’s going to be an entertaining time figuring out who is going to win.
The mailbag was as massive as promised. I noted with amusement the implication you are consciously stirring up discord in the fan community. I’ve never noticed that fans needed an agent provacateur to get them riled up. And given the fact that Comic Con and Dragon Con fall about a month apart, it is not surpising that this time of year finds new arguments and allegations flying through the ether. Then there is the fact you are not claiming first person knowledge of the incident, but are relaying such an account. I don’t see why Mr. G. would see a need to fabricate the story. Add to all the the history of some unbalanced fans, and I don’t see any controversy here, just an account told in passing that is being turned into a…well, I’m not sure what it’s being turned into.
Anyways, looking forward to the night’s discussion of Masked, assuming I can get my computer back from the shop in time. Otherwise, you’ll know what that loud scream was.

That is just absolutely despicable, I really can’t understand some people, to argue about a TV show (or character) using physical violence against a woman as an example, in a public manner, is abhorrent. It should not be tolerated in any form.

I wasn’t at Dragoncon this year and I am not watching every video to spot issues. But even asking the actress about SGU/SGA… what is wrong with you people? The question has been answered ad nauseum. Do you all REALLY think on the 1,000,001 time it will change? Because you have an angry answer in your head that SGU caused SGAs demise doesn’t make it real. And the ACTRESS wasn’t involved.

WTH? So if you are suspected of beating your kids I get to ask your childhood class mates, who are at least as involved as an actress in that scenario, if you abused them? Utter crap. As for Melissa…the long freaking diatribe over not watching it for season 2, saving money etc… for crying out loud, hundreds of words to say “done watching.”
For the rest who hate the show, blame the show over SGA (not you Melissa)…don’t let the door hit you. I do have one final comment… if it was relayed wrong and the DC fans didn’t attack her, then an apology is owed. I don’t care Joe what people elsewhere have done. The DC people were accused.
Having gone to Dragoncon many years, the only truly disrespectful person I have seen was Christopher Judge making lurid comments about a breast-feeding mother. Never a fan. They may be nearly naked, a bit loud or wild, but never have I seen one fan there RUDE to a guest. I am not saying it hasn’t ever happened, but I’d be surprised. The people in the audience even get on BORING or long winded people asking questions… they monitor their own behaviors pretty seriously.
And if that one question, stupid and misdirected as it was, is the issue… then the fans deserve not a “most the fans were great” but an apology.

One of my cats had a “grass string” hanging from its tail this morning. I pulled but it turned out to be “digested” dental floss still part way inside! Sorry if I grossed anyone out. I ended up watching mega NFL football as well, thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Patriots drag the poor Bengals all over the Gillette stadium like ragdolls. The Bengals cheered like they’d won the Super Bowl when they finally got 3 points on the score board. Tom Brady may be a cyborg.
But I am ready for my SGU/Caprica to start again!
BTW some fans aren’t rude to just stars, they’re rude to other fans as well; talking loudly on cells during panels, cutting in line and bulldozing through crowds. But over all the vast majority are real sweeties.

I have no idea what happened at DragonCon regarding the actors, but I think that anyone who takes it upon themself to personally attack an actor like that should be taken out back and shot, nuff said.
However, I’m starting to have mixed feelings about SGU. I rewatched Incursion Part 1 the other day, and part of me liked it, and part of me found it cliched. I keep jumping back and forth between love and hate. However, I do find it funny that even though his character was a complete douche for most of the season, Colonel Telford was probably my favourite. I guess I’ll just have to wait for season two and see how things go.
Joe, i dont know what better way to say it but maybe you can “communicate” with these angry fans and ask them what they want out of SGU. Because the way i view things is that most of these angry sga fans are female i think, and that sga was viscerally a fantasy look-alike premise, think about it, most of the planets explored were set in medieval villages, teyla being a warrior princess, atlantis looking like a castle, wraith are fantasy villains. So its no wonder it had a big number of fans, its sci-fi that gave a fantasy vibe. Maybe SGU needs to do the same somehow.

One more data point, I guess: I wish people would stop telling each other what they’re allowed or not allowed to think about SGU.
SGU is very different from the preceding two Stargate shows, which is, as I understand it, exactly what the creative team set out to achieve. I’d say they accomplished this objective pretty well: SGU is its own show, and that new show works for some people and doesn’t work for others. And while I dislike SGU, I do so based on SGU’s own merits.
I’m not SGU’s audience, but I am still a Stargate fan, and I wish people would stop trying to show me to the door, or telling me that I need to shut up, because I only like 2 out of the 3 shows. 🙁
P.S. Joe, sorry, I probably won’t be taking part in this month’s BOTM discussion. Work’s been a bit crazy lately, but I have Masked ready to go on my kindle, and plan to read it next month when I finally get some time off.

How do you know “most of these angry sga fans are female”? Did you do a survey somewhere?
Just one more thought about Dragon*Con: The audience for the Saturday panel was about 70% female. A guy making a comment that sounded like encouraging abusive behavior would have been shouted down pretty damn quickly. Especially given the reports of multiple women and some men being sexually assaulted at D*C this year (mostly by non-congoers coming by to gawk at the freaks), having fans saying things like this would be a concern to the con organizers. I do hope we can get to the bottom of this; because with the other things that happened during the con this year, it’s kind of worrying to me, regardless of who the target was.

First off please stop bi****** about SGU. You say it’s so terrible, and you wish it would be ended and you wouldn’t have to endure it anymore. Here’s an idea… Stop watching the show and endlessly and rudely bashing everyone involved. I guarentee you won’t feel as much heartache and pain, and the seasons might even go by quicker. Wow… What a concept.

While I am on your side I think there have been mistakes on both sides. First off, I think it would help to stop mentioning the irate rabid SGA lovers. SGU sucks lives off attention. The best way we can quelch their crap is by ignoring them, not by posting a stab at the fans just because of what one or two angry fans briefly said at a con. I was going to take issue with the fact that you seemed to generalize all SGA fans into rude rabid SGU haters, but you cleared it up so thank you for that. 😉
All in all, the longer this goes on the more childish BOTH sides become. Yes xxxs people often act like horribly behaved 6 year olds, but it is also quite childish to point that out multiple times on your blog and post jabs at them. The only way to victory IMO is ignoring them and being the better man. 😉

You probably can’t answer this because its probably handled by your boss’s boss… but I have periodically kept up on the MGM crisis. Last I saw the guys at Spyglass Entertainment wanted it. They mentioned keeping The Hobbit and James Bond series going but nothing about Stargate. Is that just because Stargate isn’t newsworthy for that story or is Stargate’s continuation in new hands up in the air? I would hate to lose Stargate for any other reason than the fans didn’t want it anymore.
@AdamWhite – I’m so sorry to hear about Ugg and that you didn’t have much time w/ him but I know you’ll treasure those years…that was a beautiful tribute…brought tears to my eyes.

That is VERY vague. I am not surprised, because Alaina Huffman wasn’t attack during a panel at the Dragon Con. There are videos and numerous people, who attended the panels, which attest to that. I guess Martin Gero is just angry, that Alaina Huffman and SGU was mostly ignored. People didn’t ask her questions and the few times SGU was mentioned, people were silent and didn’t cheer loudly, like they did for SG1/SGA and the actors from those series.

Answer: With all due respect, the Dragon Con incident was just one of several I’ve been told about and had confirmed by various individuals. On one occasion, a fan told an actress that if he was on Destiny, he’d “slap her around” – to which she shot back: “Don’t threaten me with a good time!”.”
So instead of apologizing to the innocent SGA fans at the Dragon Con, you misdirect people towards an incident, which has nothing to do with the Dragon Con. And it is not even a good misdirection! It seems you still haven’t learned the difference between an “actor/actress” and a “character”. Robert Carlyle once played Hitler. I am sure people said to him a lot of much worse things, they would like to do to his “character”. Or a more Stargate related example would be Connor Trinneer, who played Michael on SGA. I am sure a lot of people would have like to kill Michael, if they would have been in the Pegasus Galaxy!

And finally blackmail! SG1 and SGA movies will be made on its OWN merits. The ratings were great, the DVDs of them sold MUCH BETTER than SGU. The SG1 movies were a huge success. It doesn’t matter how good or bad SGU is doing. You said it yourself tons of times: SGU is VERY different to SG1 and SGA. Those series don’t have a big crossover audience. The people at MGM and Syfy aren’t stupid. When SGU get bad ratings, they won’t blame the Stargate name in the title, but the different tone of SGU. SGU is like Caprica very slow paced, melodramatic and depressive. They both got bad ratings. At the same time more fun series like Warehouse 13 and Eureka get HUGE ratings. I am sure MGM and Syfy will come to the obvious conclusion, that the style of SGU is to blame for a lack of viewers and NOT a disinterest of people in regards to the whole Stargate franchise!

That is despicable what the fan said to the actress, but what an awesome comeback. I hope that took the fan off-balance.
I suspect the SGA/SGU thing is going to be one of those things that no matter what you say or proof you give, it will never be enough. You could provide copies of contracts, phone conversations, etc., but people looking for a conspiracy will always continue to believe. It reminds me of the Obama birth certificate issue. You were mentioning that Facebook is about narcissism. I found this statement more narcissistic than anything I’ve read on Facebook, “showrunners have been scarce at conventions to answer concerns of SGA fans.” What exacty do these showrunners have to do to get you to “believe” that what has been posted quite publicly is true — that SGA was not cancelled because of SGU? Tell us exactly what would “satisfy” the SGA fans to put this controversy to rest forever? I doubt there is anything, honestly. I’m a big fan of SGA, too, but this is what we were told and I have no reason to disbelieve it.

The fan ask politely the WHOLE panel and NOT specifically Alaina Huffman. And by the way before the man asked his question, he said that he is not only a big SGA fan, BUT ALSO A BIG SGU FAN!!! HE SAID SGU IS HIS FAVOURITE SHOW ON TV RIGHT NOW!!! So if that was the allegedly attack on Alaina Huffman, which Gero and Mallozzi refers to, why is Mallozzi ONLY bashing SGA fans and NOT SGU fans?
The simple answer is, because he likes to stir trouble and put fuel to the flames of the “fandom war”, which is going on. I guess he thinks it helps to promote SGU. I really doubt that, because most people who may be inclined to watch SGU on TV, have never heard of Mallozzi, his blog and of fansites like Gateworld. The online fandom is very, very small in comparison to all viewers.

Well they said they are going to do more with TV and they want to stick to franchises that do well internationally and have proven themselves in the past. If thats not stargate I don’t know what is :p …We also haven’t heard of many other MGM projects.. so im not too concerned.

Joe – just a quickie. You, or Sparrow, recommended another fantasy series to me, but I forget what it was. I know we (well, I) talked with someone about the Dragonlance series, but I don’t think that was it. I thought it was a series written by a man, with one main character (not many different ones)…and that it was rather popular. I even looked it up on line, but now? Now I can’t remember a thing about it. I MIGHT be thinking about the Dragonlance series, but I really don’t think so. It’s been driving me nuts all day. 😛

I just finished watch SGU on netflix and it was SO SO SO much better with out the commercials! So much more exciting and it really did keep me wanting more!
You know how you were saying that you guys are keen on the amount of people watching the show live. Well I like to record my important shows to watch later or again. Anyway if I watch it live, but also record it does the number just go to DVRing it or does it go to both?

Where and when did this all happen? Was it supposed to have happened at the convention because I don’t see where it did. When did “Rabid” any kind of fans blame the SGU actors for SGA’s cancellation at DragonCon? I don’t even see where that’s been the case online for the places I’ve visited.

NO ONE IS BLAMING THE SGU ACTORS FOR SGA’S CANCELLATION!!!
They may blame the TPTB, MGM and Syfy, but I haven’t read so far even ONE comment from anyone on several Stargate related sites, who said that the SGU actors are the reason for SGA’s cancellation!!!
Start thinking for yourself and don’t believe everything you hear! A good start would be watching the videos from the Dragon Con panels. It will show you that Alaina Huffman was treated with respect and that you can’t trust everything Mallozzi write on his blog.

The Cowboys lost it for themselves with all the penalties (which they can fix); the Jets did the same thing Monday night (I’m also a Ravens fan, so not sad about that one either). Still, it’s not comforting that the games were so close and both teams would have lost but for the other teams’ penalties.
Probably going to be a long season for both my teams…

Call me rabid if you want because I love SGA & SG-1, but I’ll never let it go if there’s a chance for at least a movie, which was promised. I’m sorry if you haven’t seen a series so far which cancellation would make you sad. If – God forbid – SGU would got canceled, you would just shrug it off and say: There’s always another?! I hope you’ll find a show one day that can touch your heart. SGA did it with mine. Don’t get me wrong, I do love and watch other series, but SGA was the first to buy the whole 5 seasons on DVD and it’ll always be my favorite.
Anyway, I’d like to state this: I have nothing against SGU, I haven’t seen an episode – being European I don’t have Syfy – , maybe I even will if (or when) it comes across the ocean. Furthermore, SGA & SG-1 fans are not blaming SGU actors, or SGU in general for the cancellation. But we will always ask JM, or anyone who could have information about the promised movie, and forgive us, if the “We’ll be fine” answers doesn’t satisfy us while all SGA set being sold in E-bay… You wouldn’t find it suspicious in our place?
And thanks for giving us the right of innocent, because we honestly don’t know what incident JM talking about of. None of us heard anything like that. I’d really like to know details about it, but I’m afraid that it was only a PR thing from JM’ side to make SGU fans hate SGA fans. And it’s sad. 🙁
