With 9 of the 32 first round games complete, Baron Destructo is looking pretty good in the inter-office NCAA March Madness pool. While he and his fellow aliens and mutants for evil are enjoying the games from the high-tech comfort of their moonbase headquarters, I hosted a little get-together at my place. Special features producer Ivon Bartok was the first to arrive, bearing troubling news on the bloopers front. The directors printed the amusing outtakes, the editors marked them for quick reference, Ivon went through them all and created a terrific piece, the producers signed off on it, and now there’s a bit of a hold up. If it doesn’t get resolved by the end of next week, I’m afraid this particular special feature may end up D.O.A. Tobias Slezak, a.k.a. Tech Sergeant Dale James in Heroes I and II, a.k.a. Alex Levine’s brother, arrived a little later, immediately plunking himself down on theater chair at which point Lulu immediately plunked herself down on him. Alex Levine, who clearly enjoys sleeping in, arrived in time to catch the end of the Xavier-Georgia match-up. Alex has been hard at work on his very first Atlantis script, Inquisition, that will address an issue a number of you have brought up of late.

Among the interesting statistics provided by wordpress is a weekly breakdown of the search terms used by visitors to this blog. The search term “joe mallozzi” was used by 111 visitors. “joseph mallozzi” was second at 76. Further down the list, “ umbilical cord kitten cat worrisome” steered 2 visitors to this site, tying it with “googlion”, “cat birth”, “prime rib traduction”, “large blue human eyes” and “I am looking for a picture of a cocker s”. “birth machine”, “expedition limo”, and “baby kitties” brought in one apiece. Interesting.

Or not.

Today’s pics: Everyone enjoys sushi and basketball – with the exception of Lulu who is bummed at the Georgia Bulldogs first round exit.

Let’s do some mailbag –

Caitlyanna writes: “Have you ever eaten anything gluten-free?”

Answer: I might have once. By accident. I also accidentally swallowed a bug once too.

Patricia writes: “Are you and Marty Gero still on for Dinner at Fuel April 1st & 3rd.”

Answer: You bet.

Masterchief writes: “ I read an article about Amanda Tapping’s involvement in season 5. remember a few weeks ago when I asked you about her? you said she’ll definitely be back. according to this interview she “returns to Atlantis to film at least part of the end of season 5″. “

Answer: Carter will be in Search and Rescue and is definitely slated for an episode in the back half. Any further appearances will be wholly dependent on Amanda’s schedule.

PG15 writes: “1. Would you say that there are hints/foreshadowing in any of the first 9 episodes of the season of the new race/enemy introduced during the Mid-season 2 parter?

2. I know how ideas are thrown out at the writers’ table during spin sessions, and sometimes a writer gets to write his own idea, while at other times he scripts anothers’ idea. Of the scripts you write, are more of them from your own ideas, or the other writers’ ideas?”

Answers: 1. I would not. 2. In the case of both Broken Ties and Whispers, the ideas were mine.

Bex writes: “…in unending there is a scene where vala is crying and daniel is comforting her. Can you tell us why she was crying?”

Answer: That’s a question for Robert Cooper. If you’re nice, once the rest of the world has had the chance to watch the dvd, I’ll ask Rob if he’d like to do another special guest blog entry dedicated to The Ark of Truth.

Teslan writes: “Finally saw Gankutsuou, and can you really say it is as good as the book?”

Answer: They were completely different. I thought Gankutsuou was a beautiful series, artfully conceived and cleverly executed. Definitely one of my top ten faves.

Sulien writes: “Do you think that your early RPing, especially DMing, helped make you a better writer?”

Answer: Definitely. Gaming was an incredible creative outlet that, crazy as it sounds, allowed me to hone my storytelling skills.

LostCityGuardian writes: “ You realise that speculation is going to run wild now that Zelenka will be killed off.”

Answer: Probably.

LL writes: “I’d like to send them to you. What’s the best address to send them to?”

Answer: moorsyum@yahoo.com

Zabadoo writes: “When you wrote the Michael/Teyla/Beckett arc for the end of season 4, did you plan on stretching it out to season 5?”

Answer: We did not plan to resolve the storyline in season 4.

Elizabeth S. writes: “When are you going to say when the season four DVD set is coming out?”

Answer: Um, never. I have no idea.

Kath writes: “I was just referred to your web site by someone who writes for various Sci-Fi publications and am enjoying exploring it.”

Answer: Who, pray tell?

Kath also writes: “ I was going to ask you what you thought of Joe Hill’s Heart-Shaped Box.”

Answer: Although I was somewhat reluctant to embrace the rock ‘n roll theme at first, I found the story effectively creepy.

  1. I really, really, really, really hope you’re able to salvage the bloopers feature. If its a matter of bribery, intimidation, seduction(this particular task being contracted out to an appropriately qualified person), or otherwise begging, grovelling, or otherwise inducing the person or persons obstructing the project, please let us know. The prospect of bloopes is something I’ve seriously been looking forward to. Loved the dog pics, and glad to see everyone having fun. Enjoy the tourniment and we’ll be awaiting more torturous teasing on Zelinka’s fate.

  2. That’ll teach me for going to bed early, now I’m wide awake and in desperate need of sushi, thanks Joe!

I think I worked out where I went wrong now though, RPGs got the creative whatnots flowing alright, I think I’ve been stuck in character since 1989.

  3. Hello Joe!

Are we going to get a Sheppard-centered episode in the first half? At all? Was Joe demoted to recurring? Is Shep dead?

  4. Please save the bloopers!

Thank you for answering my question.

Please answer these questions. 1. Have you ever read The Stolen Bacillus and Other Incidents by H.G. Wells? If yes, what did you think of it? 2. Have you read any of the Fandemonium Stargate novels? Or are they considered fan-fiction and are therefore illegal for you to read? And if they aren’t illegal and you did read them, what did you think of them? Thank you.

Ugh, I have a history test. I like history, I like school, I just don’t really like tests, of any sorts (even if I almost always ace them, it’s still nerve-racking). Bye!

  5. Dang nab it, Joe, now I’m craving sushi again.

Thank you for the visual addiction reminder.

(I think I’m addicted to the gyoza sauce I dip my sushi in, I prefer the vinegary gyoza over the soy mixed with wasabi.)

    🙂

    Morjana

  6. DITTO on Thornyrose’s comment. Seriously, bloopers are SO much fun – who’s the behind holding them up? And can we infer then that the season 4 DVDs are nearly ready to go whereever they go to get mass produced for us salivating fans?

On the bball front – 5 yo is beating me in picks so far. And she has Belmont! Told my husband he’s going to be very embarrassed if she kicks his can in the pool.

  7. Second the desperate hope that the issues pertaining to the blooper reel can be resolved – it’s something fans have been wanting to see for aaaaaaages and it would be such a shame if it didn’t make it onto the DVDs. Is there anything we can do to help? Anywhere we can send persuasive amounts of chocolate? 😀

  8. Hey Joe!

The pictures of the pugs are very cute. 🙂

Also, that sushi bowl looks DELICIOUS. Save me a piece. 😛

    Thanks as always!

    – Enzo Aquarius

  9. Oh no! Wants bloopers badly! I’ve been hoping for them for YEARS! If you tell us to send in chocolate for bribes to fix this situation, you know we’ll do it!

    Cute doggie pics as always.

So – when D&Ding – did you have a favorite race or class? 🙂 It’s obvious what I like (points at name)

  10. hey Joe,

thanks for answering my question! now I’m even more curious about Sam’s departure. I don’t know if you’re aware of an interview with GateWorld where Amanda Tapping said “The timeline for the movies may be slightly different than what we thought”. obviously fans are speculating that Continuum takes place after S&R… anyway thanks again, I’m really looking forward to season 5.

aww please don’t kill off Zelenka, he’s the only one who understands Rodney! well besides Sam and maybe Dr. Lee… I like that you weren’t planning on resolving the Teyla/Beckett/Michael storyline, it’s another reason to watch season 5! regarding the season 4 DVD’s, some fans expect them to come out in july (like Continuum) but nothing’s been confirmed

  11. Ok joe whats going on? us shep fans are getting very concerned now..youve mentioned every body else getting an ep centred around them so far and continually ignored our questions of whether we’re even getting one for shep…..at this stage i just want to know if we are getting one or not, or do we have to wait until the second half or do we not get one full stop….which considering shep is supposed to be the lead its a pretty bad thing to do. Just a yes or no answer would do!

    pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. As the Easter season is upon us, I wanted to ask you whether you’re a fan of Cadbury’s MiniEggs? On another note, could you possibly post a nice CLEAR photograph of Ronon post-dreads? 😉

  13. We’ve got the same kind of basketball fever going around my office this week. I was spared mandatory induction into the bracket selection being that I’m the new guy. Next year I’m fair game though.

I also have a cousin that can’t eat Gluten. It’s really difficult to meet his dietary requirements when he visits. Mexican Food seems to be the default choice when he’s around. So no sushi for him.

  14. Hello Joe !!

Newbie to SGA and was wondering if John Sheppard is going to get an entireepisode about him in Season 5 ? I know there will be one on Teyla which I’m happy about since she is my favorite female character so thank you for that 🙂
Also will Teyla have her baby and will Michael return to cause problems ?
And will John and Teyla get at least a couple of shippy moments to tide us J/T fans over ?
    Thank you !!

    Kimberly

  15. WE WANT BLOOPERS!!!

What you can do if they don’t make it to the dvd is just make it available to us via the net. Simple.

Thornyrose! No grovelling!! It’s just not becoming! lol

I can’t live without some joviality on a dvd set.

suuuuuuuuuushi.. yum you’re making me hungry and I haven’t eaten a dang thing yet and it’s 10.30 am!

  16. Hello there.

I just wanted to stop by and say (because I haven’t in a while) thank you for keeping a blog like this. It only increases the obsession and has me refreshing this page at 5:45 in the morning for any site of Shep (especially whump ;)), but I guess I sometimes take for granted how lucky – and rare – it is for a show’s head to keep us so well informed. So, thanks.

On another note, I do hope the bloopers are saved. They show a side of the actors and crew we don’t usually get to see.

Have a wonderful Easter Weekend (if you celebrate) and a great weekend if you don’t. 🙂

  17. NOOO, WE NEED BLOOPERS! WHAT!? Zalenka is being killed off!!!!??? NOOOOOOO!!!!

props for another Season 5 episode title:).

Have you lined up any notable guest stars for next season? You don’t have to say what roles, just wondering about actors/actresses.

    GO WISCONSIN BADGERS!

  18. Hey Joe,

Do you read the 24 Hours?

Today there was a whole page on Amanda Tapping. It was about her involvment with the shows, Continuum, and her daughter. Probably no new information for you, but I thought I’d mention.

    – Anna

  19. Am absolutely gutted to hear about the bloopers, though on a bright note at least it’s only figuratively.

Do the actors have to sign off on them as well?

  20. Hi Joe,
I have always been a avid reader especially science fiction. I still have my copy of Arthur C. Clarke’s, “Childhood’s End” he was such a prolific writer. Have you read “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley? The reason I ask in “The Spoils of War,”when that Wraith was born I thought of Brave New World for some reason but, that doesn’t explain Ellie from “Instinct.” Are we going to see more how the Ellie type Wraiths are born?

Joe, you are going to find amongst the Wraith fans there will be a lot of campaigning to keep the Wraith from being extinguished from the story arc. We do enjoy our Wraith characters like Todd.

    LS

  21. All the buzz about Amanda’s new show and Sam Carter has gotten me thinking…I know, dangerous. Anyway, when Teal’c showed up he was wearing his jaffa clothes, not an SGC uniform. And Sam isn’t currently on SG1 either.

Joe, can you tell us what’s going on with SG-1 at the moment? I don’t think there is much chance that there is an “SG-1” right now. How could there be without Carter or Teal’c? So what is Daniel up to when he shows up on Atlantis? Will you say? Is it just a period of nice, well earned down time for the galaxy’s most elite and infamous band of heroes?

  22. Masterchief Said:
[…]”obviously fans are speculating that Continuum takes place after S&R…”

    is that the case, joe?

joe said: “Carter will be in Search and Rescue and is definitely slated for an episode in the back half.”

so does ‘S&R’ say what position sam will be taking after atlantis (commanding a ship, marrying jack, joining ‘dancing with the stars’, etc), or just that she’s going back to earth?

answer these questions or i’ll kidnap lulu. or your chocolate. 😛

    sally 😀

  23. What?!? Oh Come ON!!!! We need Bloopers!!! And what the heck is happening to Zippy and why or why am I not getting memos anymore?!? Joe slotted to re-occuring roles?? What?!?! (seriously having a melt down here!!)

Ok this is a first, this blog has seriously disturbed my Golden state!! And no Choccie in site!!

And I figured out why we haven’t met the Furlings. We have effectively scared them into hiding because whenever we meet someone and they become allies. We a)met them and get them killed. b) save their little grey butts and..get them killed by having to commit mass suicide. c) we’re the second evolution of the Ancients and hello they have seriously screwed up the universe with their mistakes and we’re not looking much better. Hello would you want to met us?!? Chocolate and awesome snarkiness aside…lol.

Please ignore the rant. Caffiene and coffee deprivation does things to ones mental health. Or maybe it’s the Sheppard withdrawls going into full blown bloom!!

  24. Hey Joe,
While I try not to sound like a high school exam, please list the following in order of size, from largest to smallest:
    Atlantis
    Ori Mothership
    Wraith Hive Ship
    Goa’uld Hatak
    Ancient Aurora
    Wraith Cruiser
    Prometheus
    Daedalus
    Goa’uld Alkesh

  25. ooooo.. Yes, please do ask Robert Cooper to do a guest blog entry! That would be fun to read. Not that I don’t enjoy YOUR posts.. (or I wouldn’t comment so often.)

  26. These questions are about character loose-ends:
1.) Even though you probably don’t plan on having an episode involving Lt.Ford in season 5, do you think it’s possible to bring him back ever again? Ever?
2.) When you keep the Replicator storyline going without Torri Higginson, are you going to write in a possible chance for Ms.Higginson to play her character again, or is she done for good?

  27. Random things…

Bloopers are usually the only thing I watch on DVD releases…so will be sad if they don’t make it. Bloopers just make everyone seem so real…and they’re usually funny as hell. Hope things get resolved!

Pups are ADORABLE!!! How do you not curl up and take a nap with them when they’re sleeping so cute like that? Love animals…cuddly ones, furry ones, green ones… 😉

Speaking of which, please pass along to the Wraith actor in Broken Ties that he already has ‘worshippers’ – from the States to Europe – so if those Lanteans don’t pan out, there’s plenty of others here in on earth who will happily do his bidding… 😀

X-Men – I just started reading comics a little under 2 years ago. I like some of the older stories as far as character development goes, but the art in the newer books can be absolutely breathtaking (I tend to lean towards the abstract). Some really talented people out there. I prefer Wolverine, and now X-Force (new deadly black ops X-team with Wolverine, X-23, Wolfsbane and Warpath) – written by Kyle and Yost and EXCELLENT so far! Really kicks ass. I asked Yost if Wolverine would have stones (he’s been lacking them of late – blame Marvel for trying to sell a killer to kids) – and he assured me that he would, with an extra pair strapped on for good measure. So far, so good – very exciting book!

I like sushi, but I prefer vegetable maki…never a big fan of seafood except the smoked salmon, and eel (lived at the shore all my life, too. Go figger). I love the wasabi, though..can eat buckets of that stuff…as long as I don’t try to breathe at the same time!

Poor Zelenka? Not nice freakin’ everyone out, Joe! I hope you’re not killing off the little guy, he’s lots of fun. But if it’s a toss up between him, and saaaaay…Todd…well…even Rodney likes Todd better than Zelenka! 😀

  28. “majorsal Said:
….so does ‘S&R’ say what position sam will be taking after atlantis (commanding a ship, marrying jack, joining ‘dancing with the stars’, etc), or just that she’s going back to earth?….”

Hehe, dancing with the stars. If you’re taking a vote, my vote’s for #2. 🙂

  29. I suppose there’s really not enough time to mount a Save the Bloopers campaign. *thinks blitzkrieg* – Hmm, yes, but then there are the unfortunate associations; and even a lightning war takes time to plan. Especially when you want to use real lightning.

I have to wonder if someone who’s knocked back his share of B-52’s would have leftover sushi (carefully wrapped, of course) for breakfast. But, besides the likelihood that Fondy (and possibly you as well, and maybe the pooches, too [although mine was happy to share] ) would be totally grossed out, I guess you’re unlikely to have sushi leftovers anyway. (Lovely pics of those marvelous mouthfuls, btw; thank you.) – Don’t mind me; I’m just avoiding work. In an enjoyable way, I might add.

Now that’s a truly impressive selection of Google search terms. Myself, I found your blog when looking up “alien probes” +cartman +producers.

  30. “SheppardsOnlyPie Said:

Oh good, that explains it! (Very funny explanation by the way)

  31. “tiger’s eyes Said:

Well, I don’t know about lightning but we could start a petition vote thing, like everyone who thinks the bloopers should be kept leave a comment saying that they’d like the bloopers to remain. If there were enough responses, it could work.

  32. http://www.savethebloopers.com will be up and running in a jiffy. I can feel it.

Easter Weekend on my part begins with a massive headache, literally and academically. Oh well, hopefully a full night of sleep will get rid of the first one.

Thank you for answering my questions! No hints eh? So I suppose it’s another one of those enemies that WE find instead them finding us? Starting to sound like it. Oh Daniel, why must you start so much ****? I mean that in the nicest way possible, of course. 😉

  33. Will we ever see the shipyards of the Earth Battlecruisers? They cant all be being built in the bunker that buit the Prometheus. It would be too small.

  34. Yes, please save the bloopers. We were all looking forward to it. Hope you have a nice Easter and be safe.

  35. Joe, please please please give us a hint when the shep episode will be. Please!!!! Shep fans are getting scared as his mention in season five is, shall I say, LIMITED… Is there any way you could do an ep. where you blind sheppard? With any series the shows always go through the blind, amnesia, coma, paralysis, deafness, and alternative universe themes, as did stargate sg-1. All the shows put a slightly different spin to them, but they still all go through the motions. Could those like me that are shepwhump fans please get an episode with a blind sheppard? I think myself and many others a very worried we wont get the amount of sheptastic air time we need. Please please throw us a bone. Can you at least tell us if he’s still a regular!! We need season four to come out on dvd soon, i’m having withdrawls. Thanks Joe for all you insight and info, it’s really appreciated, Shows you do value the fans.

  36. Agghh no! or we might have to combine it, a Save the Zelenka Bloopers campaign. No wait, Blooper Zelenka. Take out Radek? OUTTAKE rAdek! anyway…
    SAVE EM BOTH!!

YES! another episode title. Inquisition, well doesn’t that just conjure peachy memories…

And on the other side of the coin since he’s tied for first as my fave Atlantis character, I bet Mr. M is as amused as I with fans asking how flies the Shep in this QUINTessential season. I gently suggest, read the poem again! Two lines = 2 episodes = come off sounding pretty Sheppard-centric… “While Sheppard battles some really bad luck. A corpse is discovered and John plays detective.”
    DD

  37. Oh my god the sushi looks fabulous, but what’s with all the sesame seeds?

And do you eat sushi with chopsticks, or do you just use your hands? My husband used to have a hell of a time eating sushi with chopsticks (because he’s left handed and no one could teach him how to use them properly) until my mother told him to go ahead and use his fingers because Japanese people did that all the time. So now we both do it — much less frustrating!

  38. Ty Tigers Eye 😀 and in my rant I forgot…..

    Happy Easter Joe 😀

Now back to our regularly scheldued meltdown already in progress 😀

  39. oops That ty was for Elizabeth my bad… See meltdowns are not good unless theres coffee and choccie involved….seriously!!!

  40. So let’s see… the directors, editors, and producers signed off on the bloopers. So that just leaves as possible hold-outs… the caterers! Please direct whoever it is here so we can tell them to get over themselves. 🙂 I mean seriously, nothing on there could be as bad as the original Star Trek bloopers!

  41. So, how many people are in for the Save the Bloopers campaign? The Save Zelenka campaign?

  42. Just kidding, Zelenka’s probably safe…then again, it doesn’t hurt to be cautious.

  43. Inquisition? I hope it’s not like the Spanish Inquisition, that was nasty.

  44. Thanks for helping me on my personal mission to avoid RL this evening. I’ve quite enjoyed catching up on your blog entries, despite the fact that they always seem to make me ravenously hungry.

Sorry to hear of your Easter weekend rewrite plans. It seems you’re not the only one less than fond of rewriting. Barry N. Malzburg, SF/Fantasy writer and editor, shared his thoughts on the subject, as follows: “Once you start rewriting, you’re not able to stop. With each draft the fundamental banality and worthlessness of the material becomes more evident even as its vitality and spontaneity are drained from it.”

  45. Joe,
Ever since your talk about revising the script and problems with military regs I have been racking my brain trying to figure out what you meant. It can’t be hair related Sheppard breaks those already. Uniforms I don’t think that is it either. What else, personal relationships is that it? That is my guess but I will not get my hopes up again after the whole Trio thing. Any hint would be appreciated.

Sheppard is now the only military character in the main cast. I have really enjoyed Zelenka this season so I would like him to stay on the show if possible he and Rodney get along great and someone needs to run interference for Woolsey. I will miss Amanda but I think Woolsey is a good choice.

  46. Joe, do you have an easy way of remembering how many times you use the letter ‘o’ in your cooooooooooooooooookiemonster email address? Or do you have to go back and count each time before typing it (or do you cheat and use cut’n’paste?)

  47. Inquisition…that is a very interesting title with all kinds of possibilities.

Even though I will be very sorry if we lose the bloppers, I am eagerly looking forward to having the season 4 DVDs in my hands.

  48. Ohhh, that sushi looks wonderful. Should I ever make it to the southwest Canadia I’ll have to get you to tell me where to find the best sushi there. Or maybe you should just create Mallozzi’s Guide To Yummy Vancouver, or somesuch, since lots of folks seem to ask you for restaurant opinions.

Living inland the past twenty-N years I can get good sushi, but I grew up on the Atlantic ocean and I know the difference between “this fish just was obtained from a boat on the dock right outside” and “this fish may have been shipped live, but it was last swimming natively at least hours ago.” *sigh* The best sushi I’ve had so far in my life was in San Diego. Where’s the best you’ve found ever (so far)?

  49. pg15 Said:

Easter Weekend on my part begins with a massive headache, literally and academically. Oh well, hopefully a full night of sleep will get rid of the first one.

pg15, this would have been the right time for you to have forgotten to use HTML tags instead of BB. Thinking that perhaps you’re one of those people who can get a website up and running (headache or not) in 15 minutes with his mySQL tied behind his back, I clicked on your link to see what kind of jest might lie on the other side of the looking-glass. Of course, I only got an error message, but I probably also downloaded about 75 more TAC 3 spybots. (Those things are *really* getting out of control.)

    – Actually, I wanted to wish you good luck with the academics, and I hope your headache is just of the conventionally massive variety. (Hmm, maybe there’s a more tactful way to put that.) Some kinda bug going around. . . strongly recommend evasive maneuvers.

    SAVE EM BOTH!!

    “Outtake Radek,” LOL.

I’m going to guess that if Radek were headed for The Long Goodbye, Joe wouldn’t have mentioned it in such a cavalier fashion in his blog. – Then again, I think I was 11 yrs. old before I could accept the idea of a round earth . . .

  51. @ Namiko – I’ve always eaten it with my fingers…I believe it’s the traditional way. A good Japanese restaurant should provide a means for washing your hands before eating sushi – but where I live most – if not ALL – ‘Japanese’ sushi bars and restaurants are actually Chinese owned and operated, and a few Korean-owned, and only one provides an oshibori – or hot towel – before your meal. So not everyone follows strict Japanese etiquette. For instance, I like my sake warmed, even though it’s usually only done these days to an inferior quality sake. But warm is how I like it. In the Chinese-operated sushi restaurants, they will argue with you that it should be served chilled (I don’t like it chilled!), whereas even if they don’t agree with you, the Japanese (as a rule) will not object to your preference. Subtle things like that can make all the difference when it comes to enjoying your dining experience.

  52. Hey Joe: just a quick comment to say “thanks”. During the seemingly endless writer’s strike earlier this year, I turned my attention back to my own WordPress blog (version2pt0.wordpress.com) and was delighted to somehow find my way through the massive amounts of crap out there to your delightful corner of the blogosphere. Enticed by dimly-lit photos of an as-yet unrecognizable tv/film set, and given my penchant for all things “behind-the scenes” in TV-land, I dove in, curiosity peaked. What awaited me was first and foremost, a little slice of heaven–I’m not a foodie, but I devoured every word of your restaurant reviews and will take your recommendations to heart should I ever make the trek up to ‘The Coove’ from Seattle. What is more, hiding in the wings behind food reviews and adorable pug photos lurked the defiler of my Stargate virginity. Despite being a fan of the original Stargate movie from ’94, I never understood the appeal of the SG-1 franchise (I was too busy being a teenager watching mind-numbing episodes of ‘My So-Called Life’ and ‘90210’). To this day, I’ve never seen an episode. BUT, the comments from your fans regarding both SG-1 and SG Atlantis gave me pause: could I be missing out on something truly fantastic? So I dove, downloading the pilot episodes of SGA from iTunes. Would you believe it: I’m hooked. I haven’t even caught up on the entire series yet (not even close, really), but I think it is safe to say that I’m teetering precariously on the edge of the black hole that is Sci-Fi Geekdom, and I’m embracing every minute of it! All that to say, again, “Thanks”…to you and your team for your endless creativity, humor and wit; to the hard working actors who, I’m quite convinced, are some of the best in the biz; and a special ‘shout out’ to Joe Flanigan and David Hewlett: a few short weeks ago, I had no idea who you were. Now I know you’re two of the funniest men alive.
Endless gratitude…and I’ll see you around the blogosphere!

Save Radek Zelenka!!! Save The Bloopers!

    Joe,

Save Dr.Z first!!! Then the bloopers! We LOVE Radek!
He can smell my hair anytime! *wink*

  54. Zelenca is going to be killed off?

I’ve missed that. Can someone please give me some more details?

  55. Thank you for posting those amazing Wraith pictures on March 18th! Todd is my favorite character and the biggest reason why I will continue to watch SGA in Season Five. I am very excited to see new pictures of the Wraith!

On a different note, those two pugs (dogs) are very adorable! Also, in my opinion, sushi tastes horrible (no matter where it is served)! I visited Japan over the summer (started in Osaka and ended in Tokyo) and had to put up with it for three weeks straight. Ah well, to each their own I suppose!

  56. Holy Holiday, the Shep fans are on it again… folks, do you really think there will not be a single Shep episode in the 20 episodes of season 5? I’m 100% there will be a Sheppard episode, so calm down please. Just because he doesn’t get mentioned here every second doesn’t mean that the producers have forgotten about him!

Also, it looks as if there will be a lot of Shep whump in S&R, and there will be another big Shep whump ep later in the season, so please stop asking for even more Shep whump!

I’d rather now if there will also be some McKay whump, because we didn’t hear much about that yet, and there are nearly as many McKay whumpfans as Shep whumpfans out there, only we haven’t overtaken this blog.

And I’d also love to know if Teyla will return to full duty or not.

And if we get an episode where we will see more of Atlantis and more of the private quarters.

Oh, and while I’m here: Dear TPTB – touch Radek and you’ll regret it!! Zelenka is such a fantastic character and he’s so well-liked, please don’t pull a Beckett on him!! I know, this is all just a rumour, but I wanted to say this just in case. 😉

And the bloopers? I was SOOO looking forward to that! I hope we get to see them!

I’m not a big fan of sushi so far, but the sushi on that photo looks very delicious, Joe, I’d love to try it! 🙂

  57. I REALLY hope the bloopers are saved. I adore bloopers! I hope the situation can be resolved swiftly, because I was really looking forward to seeing them.

Now, to a more serious matter. The elusive Shepisode.

Let me explain something concerning how I feel. I’m incredibly grateful you showed us that Shep artwork a while ago. So grateful words can’t express it, though chocolate probably could! 😉 For me, that’s the best thing you could have done to make ME happy. Yes, I’m that sad! 😉

For me, a Sheppard centred episode is good, but not the be all and end all, if you will. As long as Shep gets good, gritty and meaty scenes and continues to be as important to the show as he was in season 4, then I don’t care who the episodes centre around as such, to be honest. Sheppard to me, is the centre of the show, and season 4 certainly, for me, proved that even more than season 3. Thus as a Sheppard fan I was most delighted with what I saw for my favourite character in season 4.

However, some fans don’t feel that way and they need to know something specific about Sheppard’s role in season 5. They don’t perhaps have my faith and are feeling down.

Now, I’m hoping your hint about an issue being addressed in Alex Levine’s script is concerning a Shep centred episode, just so people online I like are happy and relieved! Because it’s sad to see them down when they see other characters being talked about by you, here, and not Sheppard.

Hopefully you can tell them something soon to cheer them up?

    Thanks! 🙂

  58. Hey Joe,

Your post about getting started in the writing business was absolutely brilliant. One of the first times I’ve seen anyone besides J Michael Straczynski stick their neck out and offer such advice. So many people seem to shun offering advice for some reason, that sometimes the whole idea of attempting to enter the business seems like trying to break into the mafia or something. It was a realistic and honest view of the whole thing which, you happened to write just at the right moment when I needed a little bit of a concrete boost of encouragement.

    So cheers for that Joe!!

    John

  59. Hi Joe.

Oooppsss, oh no! Um, ok-ok, i fess up, the searches with your name(s) was mostly me… ok, about 5 each 😉 I was trying to find many things (aka sites) that you contribute to… ouch. Now that sounds awkward. 🙄

RPG’s.. Hmm, I still played Pool of Radiance original version until a couple of years ago on my pc. I have/ had an old 486 for such games.

Btw, update to email that I have sent to you that contains in the subject: “… + sauce for noodles”.

In the second sauce, I forgot to add the following:
a couple of sliced kalamata olives (optional)
a small garlic thinly slices. That would go in position 4 with the onions 😉
Sorry I forgot them, I thought I was missing something.

    I sent it to:
    moorsyum@yahoo.com
    coooooookiemonster@yahoo.com

    I hope that is ok.

  60. Way to go, Joe. You now have everyone primed for a Save the Bloopers campaign. All you need to do is clarify the hold-up and the assault will begin.

Hopefully it’s not one of the actors or they’re really in for a miserable time. 🙂

And I’m surprised that the basketball insanity has been quiet in my office, this year. Georgia even made it into the first round (and right back out again).

Blooper issues. Georgia knocked out. Coincidence?

  61. P.S. I think I may have overused the good old comma in my last post. Well, when I get serious I use the comma button a lot. Sorry! 😳

P.P.S. I’m staring up a new campaign. The STBC. (SAVE THE BLOOPERS CAMPAIGN!) I’m just trying to think of some sort of peaceful demonstration I could do outside Bridge studios… yeah, nothing is coming to mind at the moment!

  62. Ok, why is there no edit button or preview option?

I obviously meant ‘starting’ not ‘staring’ 😳

    I’m going now, honest!

  63. *waves*

Mr M, you know it’s been so long we’ve talked. So, let’s talk about the Shep eppy’s. You know me, I don’t do subtlety, so i’m just going to lay it on the line and ramble (probably incessantly for the next few minutes). You may want to go pee, as you know I love hearing the sound of my own voice. 😉

I know lot’s of people were asking about a Shep episode, and when it’s going to be, was it likely to be in the first half of the season etc… but can I be honest? I don’t really need to see a Shep episode per se… *ducks to avoid the hurling objects headed her way*. For me some of the best episodes of the season have been team episodes, such as BAMSR, Spoils of War, Midway and the wonderful Tabula Rasa. Yes I’ll admit i’m a shallow whumper and love seeing Shep all hurt and vulnerable, and you know how much I adore my comfort from the team, and all their hurt and worry. So, when I see whump, I hope to see those things in an episode, sometimes we get them (Tabula Rasa) and sometimes we don’t… TLM. 🙁 Hopefully we’ll get to see that in Search and Rescue. *does her happy dance* What was my point?

Oh yeah Shep’s eppy, for me I don’t need to know that Shep will get his own episode, because I know that even when you say that it’s x persons episodes, a lot of time the others get their moment to shine, and that really works for me. And sometimes single person eppies don’t always work for me. I love the team interaction, always have always will, and even if it’s not labelled as a ‘Shep episode’ per se, it can be just as good and just as squee worthy. And if I can be totally shallow for a moment, if you could have given us anything this season in terms of spoilers. That artwork of Shep in S&R means more to me than anything. It’s something tangible, something we can look at for months, which is why I always love and appreciate the BTS stuff you give us. So, for me even though we’ve not heard of a Shep eppy, it doesn’t mean that we won’t get some great stuff. I know people were disappointed about the extreme Shep whump eppy, being moved, transplanted… however you want to describe it, and even though we don’t know it’s state of play at the moment.

I’ve never been disappointed in what Shep’s had in the past, so i’m not worried now. Sometimes it’s the little things in an episode that can have the biggest impact for me, Such as a look, or the way the camera captures a moment, or a simple touch on the shoulder for me can say a thousand words and just make that whole episode fantastic. It’s the x factor. You never know what you’re going to get or how it’ll come across on the screen, but when it happens, it’s wonderful. For me a couple of Shep ones have stood out, the scene in Outcast where Shep is just standing by the ‘gate alone, is really powerful. Or the scene of Atlantis in the sand dunes, for me was breathtaking. Or the hugs in Tao of Rodney, just melted my heart…. have I mentioned how much I love hugs? LOL. So for me it’s those bits that can make all the difference, no matter whose episode it’s classed as….

    I’m going off on a tangent now aren’t I? LOL….

That bit you mentioned in your blog today, about what people have been talking about, is it to do with a Shep eppy (to alleviate people’s fears) or is it something different? You know me and subtlety. Okay i’m going now, but just wanted to let you know my thoughts…..

Bad news on the blooper front? 🙁 I hope it can get sorted out soon, that would be a shame. 🙁 So is this Alex’s first script? What sort of genre ep does he like? ANd more importantly does he do whump? 😉

    *hugs*

  64. Aw would you believe it? I’ve just given my computer a physical and evicted the rampant dust bunnies from their nesting place around all the ‘lectrical doodads inside(some of ’em fought back!)and now my computer is running faster than before, HTF does that work?

Now as to this blooper saving campaign where do I sign up?

  65. BTW idle curiosity (which is as much as I can summon these days, the other sort being far to energetic for me)Does the Baron have a waxed moustache?

  66. 1) I read somewhere that there’d be a Kolya-ep in s4, which was unfortunately cancelled. Any plans to have that ep in s5?

    2) Any Travelers/Todd the Wraith/Genii in s5?

  67. Always teasing me with pictures of Ivon!
    Thank you!!
    🙂

I really hope that the bloopers can be saved.
    Really.
    LOL

Sorry, Ivon makes me a bit silly.

  68. Okaaay…I recognise Alex and Ivon, but who’s the dude in the blue Puma t-shirt?

  69. Oh, say it isn’t so Joe. No Bllopers?!?!
Which actor decided not to sign off on them?

  70. Ah now you’ve made me long for a girl’s night in, lot’s of wine and cocktails with the occasional morsel of food.

No mention of football or sport allowed, just the odd juicy piece of gossip…and don’t tell me men aren’t averse to a bit of bitching and gossip!

Translations of some things said at a generic ‘get-together’

“It would take too long to explain.” Really means…. “I have no idea how it works.”

“I’m getting more exercise lately.” Really means…. “The batteries in the remote are dead.”

“I got a lot done.” Really means…. “I found ‘Waldo’ in almost every picture.”

“Hey, I’ve read all the classics.” Really means…. “I’ve been subscribing to Playboy since 1972.”

But now a couple of serious questions….

How much veto do TPTB have on a script?

Can it come down to them liking or disliking the direction you’re taking a character based on their demographics, rather than the story arch as you see it?

  72. Hi Joe,

Thanks for the search statistics. I have to say, they’re a little odd.

Oooh, I hope everyone plays nice so we get a guest blog!

  73. I truly hope the bloopers can be saved, too. But I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens (or send over the big guys to ‘talk’ to whoever is holding things up…!!).

Cute doggy pics – and wow, your blog can be found with some odd search options!! I don’t remember any baby kitties or cat births on your blog…!

  74. I second this well-put sentiment:

    As Loren said:
“… but I guess I sometimes take for granted how lucky – and rare – it is for a show’s head to keep us so well informed. So, thanks.

On another note, I do hope the bloopers are saved. They show a side of the actors and crew we don’t usually get to see.”

Joe, as a graphic designer, I do appreciate the beautiful food pics, especially today’s sushi platter. Colorful, certainly pleasing visually. But, I cannot bring myself to eat raw fishie parts.

So I will take your word for it, and many other posters herein, that it is delicious. Good on you and enjoy!

Question: Was anyone at SGA Central, like yourself, involved with choosing the facial expressions on the SGA action figure dolls? I wouldn’t mind getting a couple of them, but the facial expressions are frightening. My cats may flee the room upon sighting them.

Thank you kind sir, as always 8)

  75. Hey Joe, Will Rodney get his wish in S5 and be kidnapped by the Sexy Alien? It is not fair that Shep always gets to be Kirk. I think Rodney deserves a shot. This time Sheppard can be jealous of Rodney.

  81. essaytch Said:…Despite being a fan of the original Stargate movie from ’94, I never understood the appeal of the SG-1 franchise (I was too busy being a teenager watching mind-numbing episodes of ‘My So-Called Life’ and ‘90210’). Now I know you’re two of the funniest men alive.

I’m very much with you here on this one. Although my husband was a huge SG1 fan, I never could get into the show (though I did see the occasional episode now and then – and recently watched Ark of Truth, and enjoyed it much). For the most part, the SG1 characters just didn’t click with me. When he started watching SGA, I was mildly interested, but it wasn’t until they introduced ‘Todd’ in Common Ground that I REALLY started paying attention, though my interest waned again until Todd re-appeared in The Seer…ever since, I’ve been hooked.

I, too, think Flanigan – as Sheppard – is fantastic. He’s just such a little rascal…a weasel…a 12-year old…whatever you want to call him, that – despite his Wraith-MURDERING ways – I still love him. Flanigan has such a great way of delivering his lines I just love everything that comes out of his mouth. And Rodney – well…he has some of the funniest lines ever! Since I love the Wraith so much, one of my fav Rodney lines is this, from The Seer: “Think about it: a single hive off by itself out in the middle of nowhere, orbiting a supposedly uninhabited planet. That’s bound to raise a few eyebrows … (he looks at the Wraith and flinches a little) … I mean, if you had eyebrows.”

Ahahahahahahaha! Nearly peed me pants when he said that one! 😀

Anyway – like you, I have come to love the show, even though there are a few episodes I have yet to see (end of S3, and a few from the beginning of S4). ALL the actors are great – and the show manages to have a dark edge without being morbidly depressing like BSG, and a lot of that is due, I believe, to the excellent humor and well-defined characters in the show. For instance, take Ronon…we know the guy so well by now, that when Rodney accused him of touching something in the hive ship in Spoils of War – and he came back with, “No. Maybe just a little…” – well, that alone was gold because it was sooo ‘Ronon’. You can’t be amused by such a simple line if the characters don’t mean anything to you as the viewer. But each actor handles their dialogue and their character so well, each was quickly defined within an episode or two of their first appearance. I remember watching Star Trek NG – and it took me a season and a half before I actually started liking any of the characters…that long for their personalities to have any impact. With SGA, the impact was immediate. Only other show of late to do that for me was the new NBC show – Life – with Damian Lewis. Usually, though…it’s hard for a show – and its characters – to hook me.

    I am SO rambling now…

    :p

    das

  82. Oh crap…forgot to clarify in my ramble above that the character impact was immediate AFTER I started really watching the show, instead of just half-listening to it from the other room when hubby was watching. I only started watching a short time ago when I was once again taken by Todd in The Seer, and rushed out to get the first three seasons on DVD so I could start from the beginning. THAT’S when I realized how great ALL the characters in SGA are…though I am still extremely partial to the Wraith, and one in particular…who I promise not to mention again in this post…

    😛

    das

  83. raising hand (figuratively of course) to join the save the bloopers/save Zelenka campaign(s?)

pg15 – stop teasing, take some tylenol and create the website already 🙂 we’ll dedicate it to Anne Teldy – we can add a “save Major Teldy from the space cows” section!

I don’t think they’ll kill off Zelenka – he made it through the Last Man (presumably). Ohh, unless that’s something that got changed by messing with the timeline…ponders…oh HURRY UP season 5! sheesh.

  84. Hi Mr. Mallozzi,
please can you tell us where the elusive Tria is? There’s like a thousand different plotlines that could come from there.

    Thanks.

  85. So the latest rumors are that Weir comes back in “Ghost in the Machine” but that she will be in some form that is not played by Torri Higginson… I just want to say THANKS for keeping the Weir storyline alive even without Torri. I love Torri and I wish she would come back, but I’m afraid I love Weir more than I love Torri so I’m happy to have her back, even if she’s just mentioned 🙂

—I have a couple questions if you have time—

I was looking at name badges of the Daedalus weapons officers and pilots. Dave Kleinman (Kirby Marrow) was introduced in Seige with the rank of captain but I noticed that Aurora and Hive his rank dropped down to 2nd LT. and then back up to Capt again in Allies. What do you think the story behind his temporary demotion was?

And the Bridge officer in Seige played by Heather Doerksen (who I was excited to see her back in Last Man and take part in Sam’s final battle), her name is clearly “Maj Emma Cooper” when she was introduced but somewhere between Intruder and Kindred her name got changed to (I think, it’s hard to find clear caps) “Capt Pat Meyers”. Is there a story behind the character’s name change? Or did she just get demoted, married and decided to start going by her middle name?

  86. Any news on any time-travelling puddle-jumpers or Wraith Darts we’ve picked up over the years, or the ancient city ship from The Tower? Will we ever hear anything about some of the satellites from ‘the game’? The technology on them might be quite useful for Earth satellites, and for monitoring other planets, like the Genii homeworld.

    Thanks.

  87. Someone way up the chain mentioned the Tria, any chance we’ll hear anything about it?

  88. *SQUEE* I would love it if Rob could stop by your blog like he did last time. I don’t know if I’ll have any questions or not, but since I don’t post on any forums I’d love the chance to be able to tell him everything I loved about “Ark of Truth”. Thank you so much, Joe, for doing that.

    danielfanforever

  89. Hey Joe,
Loved the story ark at the end of season 4, some on the best episodes yet!!

    Please answer these questions:-
    (1) Dose the mid season 2 parter have a name yet or do you have any new detail to reveal about it??
    (2) You’ve mentioned episodes in the first have of season 5 for Sheppard, Mckay, Ronan, Keller & Teyla – is there gonna be a Woolsey one??

  90. I think this blog is the best type of telephone game we all played when we were young.

    You say “Poor Zelenka”
and two or thee days later people are yelling at you about killing him, you must get a real laugh out of those people.

  91. Let’s not be rash about Zelenka’s fate, the man has survived being trapped in an elevator with Carter in Quarantine!

4TH March Joe said: I’ve talked myself into the #16 spot with “a very special Stargate Atlantis” (apologies to James Stewart).

The two movies of James Stewart’s that stick in my mind are Frank Capra’s ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ and ‘Harvey’ when he starred opposite a very tall humanoid (invisible) white rabbit called a Pooka.

So this is how I see it either McKay wishes he’d never been born and gets his wish or Ronon is walking around Atlantis with an invisible shapeshifter Pooka by his side.

Any one else any other ideas?

Is Good Friday a holiday for anyone else apart from the UK?

  92. First time posting here…..

SAVE THE BLOOPERS! MUST HAVE BLOOPERS!

Loved Season 4, am very much looking forward to Season 5.

    NEED BLOOPERS!

    Thankyou.

  93. Hi Joe,

I’m new to your blog and am really loving it! I was curious about (and I know this will take you back a ways) Rodney’s password in Quarentine. I giggle a little each time I think about it and was wondering if it was a collaborative effort or if it was all Carl Binder? When Sheppard said 42 – I almost fell off the couch. Mind you there had been a bit of drinking involved but still…

Also, Thanks for your insites to the world of script writing. It is facinating, used to be a facination of mine but now i’ll just enjoy watching the results of you professionals. I may begin reading at least some of the books on your book list. Though I’m an avid reader, my work gets in the way of recreational reading and television watching. But ya gotta eat or rather my dog needs to eat.

pg15, this would have been the right time for you to have forgotten to use HTML tags instead of BB.

I wish! Well…no, I don’t wish you get infected by spybots, but I WISH that I can whip up a website that easily. I only know very-basic HTML and I’ll need freewebs to get that done. And the academics! Think of the academics!

I don’t even known what mySQL is, other than it existing, as I have heard of it, but nothing more.

    – Actually, I wanted to wish you good luck with the academics, and I hope your headache is just of the conventionally massive variety. (Hmm, maybe there’s a more tactful way to put that.) Some kinda bug going around. . . strongly recommend evasive maneuvers.

Thank you so much! I just finished my last midterm, but final studies are due to start in less than 2 weeks, so…yeah, gonna be busy for a while. The headache, I’ve realized, had nothing to do with bugs but everything to do with my nervous system. I think a nerve is being presssed somewhere near my neck. Every once in a while a shooting pain would…well, shoot up the entire right side of my face. Ouch.

Oh well, more good night sleeps is all I need. Hopefully.

Yeah, he might be just fine, no dying, just a splinter or something.

Maybe “the very special Stargate Atlantis” episode is set at Christmas time, someone wishes he was invisible, gets his wish and then only one person can see him and everyone thinks that the one person is crazy! (Because they all forgot about the invisible guy….yeah, kind of a crazy idea)

I am just adding to the chorus here……LOVE BLOOPERS! If at all possible……PLEASE include them in the DVD package.

BTW…….love the puppies as always. How’s LuLu doing these days? Is she running the house yet, or have the pugs been keeping her in her place?

  97. To Annie from Freemantle: I detest grovelling. Never been real good at it. But for the bloopers, I’d do it. IF it would do any good. And it’s not just for me. It would be for the thousands, millions of fans out there. Mind, i’d prefer simple bribery. Especially if its in the form of chocolate. The cummulative efforts of the fans would make the news. “Canadian City buried in 25 feet of melting chocolate; mail services refuse to deliver”.
Oh, I’d be glad to join the Save Zelinka campaign. But do we know he needs saving? Perhaps its something as simple as the racing pigeons he had brought to Atlantis got lost and didnt return. Or he found out what McKay, Carter, and Keller were saying about him in “Trio”. Guess we’ll find out eventually, though not soon enough….

  98. *GASP!* The bloopers are in peril?! Oh no! I was soooo looking forward to those! Will you let us know their fate?

  99. C says: I don’t really need to see a Shep episode per se… AND L says: As long as Shep gets good, gritty and meaty scenes and continues to be as important to the show as he was in season 4
I agree with youse both, some episodes had little Shep BUT the lines he did have & the way it was acted, killer impact! one that immediately comes to mind is Duet- clearly a McKay ep, but the scenes w/John were just as good. So writers… keep sticking in the quality Shep every ep… and doesn’t hurt that Shep’s actor feller can speak volumes without needing to say anything.

  100. Hi Joe –

Just thought you’d be interested in knowing (if you don’t already) that John Scalzi’s “The Last Colony” has been nominated for a Hugo Award.

I read “Colony” after taking your advice to read Scalzi’s “Old Mans War”, and enjoyed it just as much.

  101. Noooo Zelenka!! You guys wouldn’t want another Save [character name] Campaign, would you?

It was mentioned on my friends’ list today that the release date might be July 8th for Season 4. Not that I have (BLOOPERS!) anything to add that’s constructive (BLOOPERS!!) about that, but (BLOOPERS!!!) I do hope I’ll enjoy the (BLOOPERS!!!!) extras as I have for previous seasons.

ps. Is there any talk of when the season premiere might be in July? Speculation abounds that it might end up being the 11th, which is the same weekend as Shore Leave. David and Kate Hewlett are scheduled to attend… I’m equal parts excited and scared at the idea that the premiere might air on a night when a TON of us are all in one spot–and then think about the questions on Saturday for poor DH!

  102. I sympathize with pg15, school takes up all your time! (10 units in addition to high school studies but hey, it was my idea so I shouldn’t complain) Anyhow, hope you feel better and good luck with your finals!

  103. We also sat down to a director’s cut of The Seed. Great episode. Poor Zelenka

THIS is all that Joe typed about Zelenka and now people are speculating. One has even made a threat!

“Poor Zelenka”… could mean Radek gets humiliated in front of his peers, could mean he misses out on the girl, could mean he gets a splinter in his pinky, could mean he has to go back to that kiddy planet and get his hair braided.

“Poor Zelenka” can mean a multitude of things and this is how Joe often gets into hot water by those who speculate and make assumptions.

How about just leaving it at that.. next thing you know a microphone is going to be shoved into Joe’s face by a reporter asking “What made you come up with the idea to kill Zalenka’s character off?”.

    Use the brain huh?

  104. You are going to kill Zelenka? Damn you all – when are you going to get over that sophomoric phase of killing off all the peripheral characters because you think it makes you real authors *fume*
