A warm welcome to all of the many longtime readers who, over the past few days, took the time to come out of hiding and post their first comments to this blog.  Thanks for contributing to the ongoing discussion and here’s hoping it becomes habit for you, like a morning routine or chewing your nails.

Hey, look at what’s up on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Great-Power/dp/1439168822/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1257471794&sr=8-1.  It’s the pre-order page for the upcoming superhero anthology With Great Power…, edited by Lou Anders, with contributions from the likes of Matthew Sturges, Paul Cornell, James Maxey, Mike Carey, Mike Baron, Daryl Gregory, Gail Simone, Stephen Baxter, Chris Roberson, Peter David & Kathleen David, Mark Chadbourn, Marjorie M. Liu, Ian McDonald, Bill Willingham, and yours truly.  Apparently, we’re looking at a July 20, 2010 street date.

Interesting.  Friday night’s installment of Stargate: Universe has yet to air, but already the boards are abuzz.   Tomorrow, SyFy and Space air SGU’s seventh episode – Earth.  What’s it about?  Let me tell you – “Trouble on the home front for Eli, Young, and Chloe while, back aboard Destiny, Telford plays his hand.”

And then, we’re in the home stretch as we head toward the mid-season break, with three of my absolute favorite episodes of this first season.  First up –

Time: To those asking “When are we going to have our next alien encounter?” – be careful what you wish for because this episode provides the answer in creepy, mind-bending style.  As producer on the show, I watch the individual episodes so many signs I’m honestly well weary of them by the time that final mix comes around.  Time, however, is an exception.  This is one of those rare episodes I’ll actually watch when it airs.  Fantastic – but not for the faint of heart or weak of mind.  As my second grade teacher Mrs. Vowels used to say: “Put on your thinking caps”  because this one could bruise your brain.

Life: A surprising find for the Destiny crew leads to renewed hope, while an equally shocking discovery staggers one of our regulars.  To those of you wondering when we’re finally going to get to know more about Ming-Na’s character, Camile, I suggest you make a point of tuning in.  An incredibly touching episode that never fails to impact notoriously-heartless-me every time I watch it.  No, no.  I’ve just got something in my eye.  Ahem.

Justice: After a heinous crime is committed aboard Destiny, the crew struggles with the concepts of crime and punshiment as they apply to an isolated, shipboard community billions of light years from home.  The ladies step up, a terrible loss impacts all, and one of those Holy $&#@! moments guarantees a sleepless night for some – including a lot of people watching at home.

Can’t say enough great things about them.  Trust me.  These are three episodes you do NOT want to miss.

  1. How is Time mind-bending? Like Requiem for a Dream mind-bending, Memento mind-bending or Across the Universe acid-trip mind-bending?

  2. Wow! Quite the build-up, Joe! I’m finding the characters are growing on me and I’m beginning to like some, dislike others, and continue to have mixed feeling about a few others. Can’t wait to see the next few eps!

  3. Ya I’m sold for Justice and Time. A little concerned for time. I heard it’s all shot from the kino perspective, and I hate those blurry black edges. A little scared, but I got my fingers crossed. Justice is the one i’m totally psyched for.

Life…… I’m not going to make any judgements, but I’m going into this episode with an open mind for sure.

    Looking forward to space!!!!

    Thanks so much,
    Major D. Davis

  4. I’m excited about Earth. Eli seems like he finally gets the girl (In the previews, anyways! And I know it’s going to happen now because those dang SyFy previews give EVERYTHING away!) and that makes me look forward to it even more!

Is “looking forward to the stretch run” a Canadian colloquialism? I am unfamiliar with it.

  5. Joe,
How is Max doing ?? Any pic’s of Brie and the Gang??? Joe when you are sitting down and get up to walk do the dog’s follow you all over the place??or are they busy chasing each other??

  6. @ytimona. I think it comes from the horse-racing phrase, “down the home stretch”. An example of language evolution or a malaprop, depending on whether one is optimist or pessimist.

    Is it Friday yet?

  7. You can never really gauge viewer opinions on the Syfy board, if that’s where you look. That board is so heavily censored, anything critical is locked or swept under the rug. It doesn’t matter if it was constructive or even playful joking on the characters.

  8. Great to find out that there are great episodes coming up. While I like the past couple of episodes I don’t think they were as strong as the episodes before those and I’m waiting for the show to take off again. I’m ready for it. I’m confident it will happen.

  9. Thanks for the link…and as promised previously – have it on order. Now to wait for Friday’s SGU.
If things are going to be so spooky…guess I have to have additional lights on.

  10. Can’t wait. I’ve heard a lot of the cast say on twitter or in interviews that “Time” was their favorite episode to shoot and they really want to see what the fans think of it.

Also, looking forward to seeing more of Camille, who at this point has been a background character (was she even in the last episode?).

  11. @Joe – Hey that With Great Power book sounds nice. I like Superheroes. Thanks for the link, and the blog entry today.

    Peace & Love,

    j

  12. AWESOME! I wanted to be among the first to pre-order the book… With Great Power, edited by Lou Anders… and I just did! Looking forward to reading it! Congratulations on getting your story publish! Way to go Mr. Mallozzi!

Is there any chance in September 2010 you could get all the contributors to partake in a Q&A for each story?

Also, can you tell us if Peter Deluise will be doing the commentary on the episodes he directed?

    Thanks so much!

    Cheers!

  13. You are the MASTER of buzz creation. I cannot wait to see these now! (And I already couldn’t wait, but now I really, REALLY can’t wait!)

  14. Most likely going to miss both this week’s and next week’s airings, so will have to fall back on iTunes to see the episodes. Will be paying attention to the episodes named, to see how your perspective differs from that of we regular viewers(I know, Stargate fans are not “regular” people, but we don’t get to see the episode produced from casting to final fx and editing). As for the book, don’t normally pre-order books but I will definitely go ahead on the anthology. Hard to believe it’s getting to the point we finally get to see the fruits of all your hard labor earlier this year. Thanks for the pics and the tips.

  15. I don’t know why, but I’m more curious about that notepad in front of Sgt. Riley than anything.

Hey, I quit smoking two years ago today(ish). It’s likely a few days off, but I figured the Guy Fawkes rhyme is easier to remember.

  16. *ponders the new eps to come*

Thank you for the pics and the info on the new eps.

I have started a fanfiction project of what happens between the eps, so I am greatly looking forward to Friday (SyFy Friday)!

  17. @ Gilder – Sounds good! I was home working the past two days, so had plenty of time to edit the roll call. Not sure how busy I’ll be from here on out, so every 12 hours would be fine (I just hope it’s not *my* job now… 😛 )

@ noelm – Look no further! The Many Faces of Steve the Wraith: (Caution: large image)

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v54/dasNdanger/manyfaces.jpg

God, that made me fall in love with him all over again… *sigh* I really do miss those li’l green buggers. 🙁

    das

  18. I am looking foraward to “Earth” later tonight, I just hope that OnDemand does not cut bits out like it did for “Water.”

I am looking forward “Time,” “Life,” and “Justice.”

Course the spoilers I have read have made me want to see the rest of the season even more.

  19. Arctic Goddess, I am so sorry for your loss. It is like losing a child. It’s no easier when you have to make that decision to do the last, best thing that can be done. My 15-year-old sled dog “went to the bridge” to wait for me in May. She was my baby, and losing her was horrible. Can only imagine what you’re going through now. Sending healing prayers your way. Give yourself LOTS of time, and no deadline for “better.” The upside: they have a way of reminding us that they still love us, too. God love ya, AG. *hugs* 🙁
    RIP, Tigger.

  20. Joesph Mallozzi…I am trying to avoid ALL spoilers. 😡 I find with this show it’s best for me to go in totally blind, with no expectations.

Now you’ve gone and ruined that for me. 🙁 Big meanie.

(Heck, I just feel like bellyaching, just so things felt normal around here now that the hubbub has died down about your rant and all. Not really sure I’m ready to have upbeat, chipper Joey back yet. 😉 )

Looking forward to that book – Guess July’s not too long a wait. I really wish I knew when his fantasy collection was coming out – I really want to read that new Elric story (it’s supposed to be as steamy as that broom closet scene! 😀 ).

Of course, Mike may have been exaggerating…

Anyhoo…have a good evening, sir. How’s the Maximus & The Gang? The missus? Mamma Mallozzi? Carl?

    Hope everyone’s well!

It is nice seeing so many new ‘faces’ (or…monsters… 😉 ) around here! Just don’t scare ’em away, Joe!

    (Yeah, shutting up now… 😛 )

  22. Glad to hear we’ll get the anthology sooner than later!

The episodes sound great! How long is the hiatus going to be, though? Not six months like 3rd season of Atlantis, right? I hated that. Too long to wait for good TV!

  23. Hi Joe,

I noticed that Water had the first “wormhole travel” shot for SGU, which got me wondering: is that something that’s written into the script? Or does the director/editor decide when or when not to use a wormhole transit shot when a character steps through?

Also, check out this video my sketch comedy group made, I think you might enjoy it: http://nstvcomedy.com/homealone.shtml

Can’t wait to see Earth tomorrow!

  24. Please, please get SGU bought for another season. I just heard about Defying Gravity, what a shame.
If you’re going to use sex in a show, lust is not an adequately complex motivator. It would be nice to see sex used for survival, out of desperation, or manipulation. Dr. Rush’s casting was very well done. I hope Eli gets developed as the only one who can make him crack a smile. Eli is the only character with a sense of humor so I’m hoping he made a kindred spirit high-fiving friend in that kino spy cam incident. As for the victim, I would like to see her develop as a master manipulator. Glad the medic got to show backbone. Would love to see the bad boy character make more weapons and generally be less of a jarhead. Give that man some dialogue once in a while. I would also love to see Chloe find a skill and contribute like a leadership role under Ming Na’s character to start. I wouldn’t change a thing about the colonel.
I would also love to see guest appearances by Tim Russ, Robert Picardo, Michael Shanks (again), and maybe Ian McKellan as a nemesis. Christopher Heyerdahl as another creepy Tod type character would also be fun.

  25. For justice, it Seems like a fairly straightforward solution should exist. If you don’t have enough officers or legally-trained personel to hold a field court-martial, order some of the junior enlisted to use the stones and switch bodies with a handful of JAG officers.

Once the trial is over, shoot the criminal. The only hard part was not having enough officers for a board, and the lack of trained JAG officer for prosecution/defense.

  26. “Put on your thinking caps.” Loved it when my teachers said that to me. I used to tell my students that all the time (I’m certified to teach here in BC, though I became a professional extra right after I graduated). I wonder if kids today have thinking caps. I haven’t put mine on for years. It’s probably too big now cause I think my head shranked (shrinkded? Shunkeded?)

  27. Hi Mr. Malozzi,

As a person thats been watching stargate since I was 8 now 22 going on to 23 I just want to say that your entire team is doing and continue to do a fabulous job on the show from SG1 to SGA and of course SGU. I love, enjoy, and own on DVD ever season, movie thats ever been produced. I recently have been reading you have had some people thats been trashing actors and other people involved in the show which has sadden myself but I just wanted to let you know that there are people that appreciate everything you and the entire cast and crew/team involved in the show do. Thanks for continuing to do so and I am looking forward to earth Friday!

I must say to others that might disagree I am sort of bias in that I do know a few people that work in a number of roles in the production and creation of Stargate but my love and enjoyment of the show is primarly something that started well before I met the people involved in the show! In other words I don’t care what others think!

    Thanks for your time!

  28. Thank you to everyone who sent me such warm comments about the passing of my cat. She is still ever present in my thoughts, but hearing from everyone about their experiences with their own pets helped a great deal. You all have no idea how much better I felt reading everything you wrote.

And very special thanks to Joe for your dedication. It was like a literary hug. Thank you.

@ Michael A. Burstein: I am half way through your book, “I Remember The future”. I just wanted to let you know that I am thoroughly enjoying it.

    Patricia

  29. I just thought of a question, about the Kenosodes.

When do they take place? Are they extra scenes that take place during the episode, last or next, or do they take place in between the episodes?

  30. Hey Joe,

I am not really reading comments any longer, but I could sure tell how short these are. You must be saving all the long ones for later in the day. hehehehehehee

The pups were so cute laying in the sun. I wanted to squish next to them for a nap. hmmmm, they are so sweet.

Thank you for sharing about the upcoming episodes. I think it is great that you always try to make the blog something nice for us fans. The pictures were also great…maybe not the story lines so much…but sometimes bad things happen as well as good. I guess, it will be awhile before I know what the balance of it will be for this series.

    Best to you Joe,
    Cheryl 🙂

  31. Re that first picture:
    “Triple Stone Power: Activate!”
    or something along those lines.

  32. Hey Joe,

I have been reading your blog for a while now, and I was shocked to read your last few post the other day when I came back from vacation.

I had no idea people have been expressing themselves so strongly over the last few months. Stargate fans have always been critical, but I don’t recall any personal attacks at the cast and crew. You have to remember that there are a lot of fans who don’t feel the way some people do.

Besides, I think it takes a lot of courage to play a character that isn’t likeable all the time, because I suspect every actor wants for their character to be loved. So compliments to the cast for portraying humans in difficult situations – resulting in unattractive behaviour at times, because of pure instinct – rather than perfect superheroes!

For the record, I do like the characters thus far. I’m not entirely sold on all of them yet, but hey – we have the upcoming episodes for that, right?

Keep up the good work. And please keep in mind that the majority of the fans who do like the show see no reason in posting their approval all over the Internet!

  33. Hey Joe,

You had a second grade teacher named Mrs. Vowels? Does she come from a long line of teachers? I can’t see a Mrs. Vowels being anything else.

    Maybe a librarian.

Anyways, I came across an article regarding controversy over a body swapped Camile having hetero-sex. It seems to have been a misunderstanding due to a poorly worded episode/character breakdown. Would this controversial episode be “Life”?

    Cheers,

    -J

  34. Morning Joe, congrats on the anthology, will be pre-ordering soon, but it’s such a long wait! It’s been an incredibly long and stressful week here, so very much looking forward to relaxing with some takeout and SGU tonight. Can’t wait for “Time”. So, wait till tonight, wait for July, wait for “Time”. I think I’ll go back to sleep for a while! Have a good day!

  35. Congrats on the book, I’m sure you’ll get lots of orders in.

As for tonights epi and the next 3, i can’t wait for tonight, i just hope I’m able to stay awake for them. not that i find it boring, not by a long shot, but I’m just body drained. I’m enjoying the show thus far and can’t wait to see them all.

You’re all doing a great job on the episodes, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Give my best to the cast and crew, altho, I’ll probably see them on twitter anyway.

*side note* i love those little kino’s lol, where can i get one??

    Karen

  36. Joe,

First of all thanks very much for the warm welcome! I will certainly be tuning in to the new few episodes, they are all looking good!

Only two questions instead of a rant today, hope you don’t mind! 😉

    POSSIBLE MASSIVE SPOILERS!!!!

    *************************

1.) There has been a promotional photo floating around t’internet for a month or two now, showing Rush holding what appears to be a human like skull in his hands in a jungle environment, would this happen to be Time, and if so, could this be maybe ever so possibly his own skull, or one of him fellow expedition members?

2.) Will Telfords’ meddling actions in Earth have massive consequences for the Destiny crew, and will he be welcome next time he is ‘on’ the Destiny?

Thanks always for taking the time to read and respond to our questions!

Man o’ the Shadows, Josh x

  37. I am DYING to find out what Telford is up to! Everyone focuses on Rush as a possible bad guy, but Telford is shifty, shifty, shifty!

    I can’t wait!!

  38. Time, Life, and Justice. Cant wait to see them. Way to get me wondering about what awaits! Looking forward to them.

  39. Wow, cannot wait to see these episodes… thank you kindly for leaving out anything that could really be called a spoiler. That would just be mean!

And thanks to you guys for being on hulu, otherwise I’d miss all of these episodes! Any chance you’ll be following suit of the Sanctuary guys and doing some episode commentaries either in podcast or whatever other form?

  40. Huge kudos to everyone connected with SGU. Everyone should be very proud of what they have given to the fans so far. I also confident that the whole season will just keep getting better and better. I am so impressed with the stories, acting and writing of this whole endeavor.

I’m really impressed on the maturity of this series. Each character has their own flaws, experiences and different reactions to each other in a contained, VERY stressful environment. I, for one, would be turned off if Robert Cooper, Brad Wright, the writers, directors and actors tried to give us SG-1 or SGA in this setting. IT JUST WOULD NOT HAVE WORKED!

I want to give a special shout out for the last scene from Water last week. Louis Ferreira did a super job of showing just how heavy the mantle of command sits on his shoulders just by walking away from the civilians demanding answers from him.

I’m looking forward the rest of this season and hope there are many more seasons of SGU to come.

  41. Talk about a post full of anticipation!! I’ll be marking my 2010 datebook with the anthology release, it comes out right after my brothers wedding so it will provide me a much needed break from the wedding insanity!

I look forward to pretty much every episode at this point! Each one seems to fly by that by the time the episode is over I cannot wait to see what happens next. But then the next episode is exactly the same feeling and I cannot get through each week fast enough! Thank you for providing us with such an incredible show!

As of right now I really like both Eli (shocking I know) and Rush. Rush is a brilliant character and I look forward to learning more about him!

  42. Good Morning Joe,
The December and January BOMC selections looked so good I ordered them online yesterday. Early Christmas present for myself!

With today’s blog you gave us just enough info to whet our appetites even more for the coming episodes! Not that we weren’t already looking forward to them. Nicely done.

    I wanna play, too!

    Happy Friday everyone!

  43. Oops, forgot to say your book is next on the list to purchase. Early Christmas in July present! 🙂

  44. Heh, careful not to invoke the wrath of the TV gods, usually when a producer steps up and says “Don’t miss these fantasitic episodes” – the ratings tend to drop *g*

And “Mrs. Vowels” was that really her name?! Sounds like something out of the George Lucas school of script writing *g*

    @Major D. Davis
    ‘..kino images..’

Yeah, those vignettes make it look a bit like a computer game doesn’t it 🙂

  45. Praying that somewhere in those buzz worthy episodes are some shots of Richard Dean Anderson 🙂

  46. I am unbelievably pumped for the aliens…hopefully this will convince my husband to continue watching so I won’t have to record and watch when hes out…

and I know this has probably been asked…but is there any chance of a run in with the Furlings? I mean in the show or movies to come….

  47. J: You are a hopeless romantic aren’t you? 😀 That is so sweet. I was born without that gene and instead inherited the pragmatic gene. My hubby knows not to bring home flowers but chocolate 😉 .

Mr M., can’t wait for the book or the new episodes! I’ll pre-order it!!

To all those ladies out there, buy pepper spray/mace/stun gun and stay aware. This happened to a young woman in my community this week: http://www.wmctv.com/Global/story.asp?S=11453131 . She was changing a tire and someone stopped and assaulted her. Scary! Her life will never be the same. I hope they catch the guy 👿 .

Condolences to the families/friends of all those involved in the base Massacre yesterday 😥 .

    Bisou!

  49. In between message approvals, some people disappear from that blogroll list. I suspected that much. Now I have a proof. I know it’s not their fault, but PattyO made “for the love of beckett” disappear. “Your method is flawed” would say a guy named Meredith. Is the person who started this thing following the game and keeps track of the fallen?

If so, then it should now read: (if no one added more in the meantime!!!)

  50. @anaïs33

“Moi je suis une fidéle de votre blog depuis Avril 2007 précisément^^!”

Ben qu’est-ce que t’attends pour ajouter ton nom à la liste? T’es en France je crois? Ça serait chouette d’avoir quelqu’un des “vieux pays” là-dedans!!! 😉

    et “Merde” pour ton permis…

  51. Mr. Mallozzi,

I have enjoyed reading your blog for the past few years. I just wanted to say, for the first time in the comments, that I really enjoy SGU. I like the drama of really not knowing anything, and being as in the dark as the characters on the ship. Not to mention, the show is beautiful to watch, the actors are great (for any remaining mothers reading), and I am really digging the score.

Thanks for your insight, and providing the cast and crew’s point of view.

    Respectfully,

    Joan

  52. Hey Tammy – I thought I had hope!? (*g*) I’m totally with you in preferring chocolate over flowers. Although roses are nice too. I’m also not a huge fan of romance. I like love, and it is sometimes not as easy to find things that are about love regarding to two people becoming a couple without all of the romance cluttering the way.

But, a little romance is nice. My sister absolutely LOVES romance. But, we’re complete opposites (in a good way) so she loves horror movies and other things that I’m not so interested in.

I try to be practical about the whole “Sheyla” thing. I just really like the episodes where they connected or where their relationship grew like Conversion, Quarantine, and Sateda. Plus in Sateda, Beckett ended up being the hero! (*smiling*)

And, I think I’m with you on being pragmatic, at least I hope so… (*g*)

Peace, Love, & have a great day,

    j

  53. Finally it’s Friday !!!!! The week is just way too long in between.LOL Thank you once again Joe for all that you do, it is so nice to be able to go to a Blog about my favorite show and get good information and read (mostly) wonderful and supportive comments. I wait patiently for each of your blogs (sometimes a little impatient but what the heck, I am an adult I can wait….sometimes).

The little tidbits you give us make for another anxious week of waiting…you are too good at the build up.LOL

Once again thank you and congrats on the books

  54. Hey Joe!

As one of those long time readers who just posted the first time the other day–thanks for the welcome!

Looking forward to tonight’s show. My girlfriend’s missed the last 3 so we’ll have a mini marathon leading up to “Earth.” Never a bad thing.

Can’t wait for next week–want to see a big alien encounter with an SGU slant!

  55. @Krenn

For Justice, JAG officers have no jurisdiction on board the Destiny. This is their community and this issue is an unavoidable growing pain.

I recently wrote a story around that growing pain — it’s super fun to figure out how to play out such a heady conflict with monster trucks instead of boring speeches. Nobody says anything overtly deep unless there’s a gun to someone’s head or someone’s in a choke hold — that’s my rule.

I love frontier stories. There’s so much stuff to blow up. Oh, yeah, and primal conflicts play out in an alternate setting where we can set aside our biases … and monster trucks.

  56. I hate you. Well, no not really.
    LOST, Intelligence, and now SGU.
Episode ends, and the first thing that comes to mind is, “Damn, gotta wait another week.” And now you go and give little teasers for what’s coming up.

Well done. I can’t say enough good things about this show. Though the flying into the sun freaked me out a bit. That’s a powerful device fanboys are going to point out in future episodes (“Why didn’t they just, you know, channel it through the deflector array?”)

I’m loving the story, the tone, the cast, the music. Keep up the good work.

  57. @Tammy Dixon

Me too! I always think buying flowers is a waste of money…. chocolate is much better and my hubby does the same thing yours does!

    @Arctic Goddess

Never think you are alone…. there are many of us who love our pets and I know that I for one will never hesitate to place my life at risk to protect them. I know I would because last time I camped with Junebug in the middle of the night she pitched a fit, jumped over the three foot wire fence I had around our campsite and disappeared into the forest. I managed to follow through the trackless waste, and when I caught up to her she was standing on her hind legs with her front paws against a tree looking up. I looked up, and behold, a black bear looking back at me. We left in a hurry, but I was calculating what I would have to do if it was a baby and Mama was around…. I know who would have won that fight but I would have had to try and was fully prepared to!

It’s a terrible sorrow to lose a beloved pet, especially when they are like children to us. You will likely always miss her, but you will also always have the good memories…. hang on to those…. I have so many of my beloved black lab Earnhardt, and I often smile through my tears as I think of the sweet and goofy things he did on a daily basis. *more big hugs*

  58. Good day Joe, finished readings Zoes Tale, another great book by Mr Scalzi, so what do I read next, I read the botm, will see if I can remember it for the q’s. Also just read Griffin’s Daughter and soon the 2nd one in the trilogy will be in my hands. Oh yeah and I pre-ordered some book that supposed to have some terrific (story) in it. Looking forward to that, thanks for writing…
—-and tonight(now its friday) will be catching this great new show on sci-fi, you should watch it, its all the rage.! has lots of twisting and turning adventure and plots and subplots and did I say adventure, and great looking characters! and some pet they call a kino, strange name for a pet, but anyway. Its pretty terrific, so get out of the kitchen and sit a spell. you all come back now, ya hear…(sorry heard that somewhere, couldn’t resist….

  59. Thanks for the heads up! I’ve pre-ordered it, but will almost certainly have forgotten about this fact when it arrives in July 2010. 🙂

  60. J: I hope, someday, you get your wish! BUT just for you, I’ll “hope” for “Sheyla” in the movie.

Yes, I know I’m weird but I’m suspicious of romance. I’ve seen too many disasters that began with roses and wine. It seems the more gushy the guy is, the more something is off about him. Of course, I married my sparring partner so….

earndoggy: Yes, flowers are expensive. Plus, I do all the financial stuff, so I pay for them anyway 🙁 .
Great comment you had for Arctic Goddess.

Arctic Goddess: each day will get a little better. It will sink you that you did the right thing.

    T

  61. Joe –

I just saw the preview for “Earth”. I can’t believe Telford thinks he has a hand to play from a couple billion light years away. Now there’s a guy not lacking in cajones. I must say that LDP makes that character so credible.

“Time”, “Life”, and “Justice” sound equally compelling. I’m really loving the show and never miss an eppy. No this is MUST SEE TV.

    Logan

  62. @AG, you put your finger right on it when you compared Joe’s blog dedication to a literary hug, that is EXACTLY what its like…our fur family members sure do leave a whopping great gap in our hearts and lives. Be sure I’m thinking of you.

Joe, methinks you need to add a kitty into the mix at home how about a Bengal? my mum has one and he hasn’t read the “how to be a cat” manual, he seems to be trying everything on to see which he prefers but cat doesn’t seem to be one of them.
Hugs to the pooch brigade and have a great weekend

  63. @Tammy Dixon

I never got romantic with my sparring partners. You do get to really know people that way, though. Putting up with each other when we’re too tired to get off the floor and go home before the anti-adrenaline kicks in and we get punchy (the grumpy kind, not the sparring kind) doesn’t leave room for false fronts.

  64. I haven’t followed your blog in ages and tuned in the other day to find your posts about the negativity towards SGU, and wanted to add my 2 cents for what it’s worth.
Me, I’m one of those die-hard SGA fans who was sorely disappointed it got cancelled only to be replaced by a different Stargate show. But by the time SGU aired, I was willing to give it a chance. Not overly impressed with the first 2 hours and decided it wouldn’t be a must-watch show, but certainly decent enough to DVR it. The next 2 eps I did DVR and then had a mini-marathon and you know what, I got sucked it. The sex stuff – not a big fan. I almost had my 10 year old watch with me but I’m glad I didn’t. But I’m willing to wait and see if it’s integral to storylines, and I love how it makes Scott more human and vulnerable. And in retrospect, you know, none of the characters on SGA were ever really shown in any kind of physical sexual contact, which, considering that first year they were cut off from Earth, seemed pretty inconceivable.

Anyway, I’m enjoying the show – it has yet to become a Must-See show and my DVR is helping me stay current with the eps, and I’m glad the lights got turned on because it was too dark and hard to see. And I’d like you to pass along to the cast, kudos to them and I hope I get to continue to watch their characters develop.

  65. Sadly, I did not evade the flu 🙁 so it’s Tamiflu and steroid inhalers for the duration. At least I had the good sense to stay home yesterday (at my H1N1 infected daughter’s urging) so I didn’t infect everyone at work.

But on a happier note, I just had my 55 inch Samsung TV set up today with a nice receiver that has a delightful speaker set up with a sub-woofer suitable for vibrating the walls. Looking forward to curling up under my blankie on the couch with a hot toddy tonight to watch SG:U in HD on the big screen!

And maybe tomorrow I’ll watch some SG:A so I can see Todd in HD!

  66. Jean de Montreal said:
” Is the person who started this thing following the game and keeps track of the fallen?”

No, Jean, and I welcome your help! 😀

  67. Aaawh Shucks Tammy! You’ve touched my heart with the Sheyla thing. Of course, I know it won’t happen. That would be too good to be true. But, it’s such a nice gesture to hope with me. Thanks for the support!

And your comment “It seems the more gushy the guy is, the more something is off about him.” – Gosh isn’t that the truth! I don’t even want to go there with you! Suffice it to say, I agree completely!

I have a cousin who doesn’t like make-up on women. He says that it is a façade; and, if a woman is really beautiful, then she doesn’t need it. I feel this way about romance. A little bit of it can be nice and accentuate what is already there. But, it creates nothing.

    Thanks again,

    j

  68. @Tammy – Oh, and you’re not weird at all. If you are, I am too!

    Peace & Love,

    j

  69. @Arctic Goddess: I know I haven’t said anything about your beloved animal. And, I’m still not sure what to say other than you have my condolences – and that doesn’t seem like much for what you are going through. I’ve had an animal pass away. And, it felt like every time someone brought it up, they were bringing up something painful for me. It took a while for me to get past that. Some people need space when these things happen, and some people don’t. But, I keep feeling like I should say something… So again, you have my condolences.

Peace, Love, and hang in here,

    j

  70. Here’s a quick question for you. I’m writing about travelling through a star for my science fiction course, and is it “the Destiny” or just “Destiny”?

    Cheers!

  71. Stargate Universe=Total Rubbish. It is soo boring and you didnt market it properly, hence only a handful of people watch it!Theres better acting on Kids TV!

    Bring back Atlantis!

  72. @Eric.Stewart

It looks much better then the one on the fan site.”

    Lucky son of a….:)

  73. Well I finally got to see Water in its entirety and was totally impressed with the story line and the setting. Ice planet was soooo fantastic. It stressed me out no end, but in a good way. Eli made me smile, as always, aliens bursting out of stomachs and razor blade pirahnas. Yep, all good. Really looking forward to Justice – Holy #*^! moments are good. I think?

  74. I believe I’d be clawing my eyes out of my skull now, if I could stop laughing long enough! OMG. I’m going to be laughing for hours!

  75. “Earth” whoa, Rush, whoa, and the body swapping, whoa, Gen O’neill, whoa, and next weeks preview, Whoa! Can’t Wait!

  76. I like that we’re finally seeing that power-hungry morons are being attracted to the Stargate program. Hammond got the program only because everyone thought it was a dead-end – and he kept it only because of the intervention of the SG teams using the Asgard to keep him around.

But given the power and influence Earth’s forays into space offer, it’s obvious that politicians and petty tyrants would be attracted to it like flies to balsamic vinegar.

Considering the track record for giving unenlightened civilizations advanced technology, the only question is how long it will take Earth to destroy itself. Shame the writers and the producers don’t have the guts to tackle that kind of story line.

Poor Eli. Good for him that he recognizes that he’s only going to be Chloe’s friend and nothing more.

  77. I enjoyed watching this episode.

Was it me or was the scene in the car with Eli and Chloe edited incorrectly? It seemed like Chloe was kissing Eli, and then she wasn’t.

I was surprised with Col. Telford’s action to “cut and run”. I know he is a hard @$$, but I didn’t expect that at all.

I can’t wait for the next episode.

  78. “Was it me or was the scene in the car with Eli and Chloe edited incorrectly? It seemed like Chloe was kissing Eli, and then she wasn’t.”

Eli fantasized about her kissing him while he was talking to her. The editing shows him snapping back to reality. Hey, they needed promo material and Young and TJ making out, Young screwing his wife, and Telford screwing Young’s wife just weren’t enough.

  79. I find myself getting incredibly frustrated with Universe. I really want to like the show and I’m biased toward supporting anything science fiction but the writing and the characters are so utterly dismal that I want to yell at the screen. I’m sorry but I’m running out of patience with a chain of command populated by complete idiots and I’m offended to have seen General O’Neill in league with the incompetent Telford and his single episode band of faceless, failed scientists.

The two Colonels are both so unprofessional that neither of them should be in command of anything more powerful than a station wagon. And the deus ex machina of the magic stones… sorry but someone please toss those in with the corpse of the senator. Because after spending the time and resources to swap out the show’s boy genius, Col Dupe and Princess Whinypants, the only thing they have to do on Earth is go party? Even if you were trying to keep Eli Crusher out of the loop, at the very least, he’d be working on equations to remodulate the transverse coil emitters or some such. But no, to the night club with the vacuous chick he goes.

So here we are again, the day after watching the new episode and a huge plot line is just dropped. After Water the ship was severely low on H2O, the sand alien, after drinking its fill, was dropped off on Hoth and Sgt. Prettyboy was brought back on board clinging to life on the hover cart. A week passes, there’s no mention of the dire state of the water supply and Sgt. Prettyboy shows no signs of wear. I guess a couple of kilos of ice was enough for the 80 odd folks aboard the ship. If this is supposed to be the serious and adult Stargate, how about some adult quality continuity between episodes?

Why is Chloe featured in this series? Does she have a purpose beyond crying or kissing? To the actor’s credit she did one thing that was superb and rarely seen, in the club scene she spoke as though she was talking over the loud music. Of course, not one other character bothered to follow suit so her performance looked odd and out of place but kudos to her for a realistic and intelligence choice. Shame the character she plays is so annoying and useless.

So far the only characters I’m pulling for are Greer, Rush and TJ. And really, TJ had an affair with Col. Young? Really? Sorry I just don’t buy it. She’s young, intelligent, beautiful and she goes for a fling with an old guy who’s her superior officer, who’s married and who has the worst haircut ever, short of a fauxhawk. Then, the first thing Telford does after taking command (which makes no sense at all and was achieved by deceiving the stranded crew) is toss Greer in the brig? One of the only capable people available buy wait, there’s a mysterious grudge to play out. These aren’t flawed, textured characters, they’re space morons. I’ll tune in for a few more episodes but this is a really disappointing first season so far.

  80. Still curious Joe:

Is the use of the communication stones addictive? I’m also wondering how they connect to one set of stones and not others out there. Is it a frequency thing?

I’m thinking that Sgt Spencer has a few allies and at some stage there might be an attempted coup.

    Cheers, Chev

  81. Enjoying the acting from Robert Carlyle, Louis Ferreira & David Blue in particular. Love the interactions between their characters.

    Cheers, Chev

  82. Repost>
Several issues I had hoped to see resolved were indeed either addressed or resolved with this episode Stargate Universe: Earth.
As I had hoped, they were able to access the weapons system.
As I pointed out in another article, they plan to address the navigation system, and have actually been able to assume some control.
Also, the character I had wanted to take a more active role (the game geek) was not only more active, but also charismatic.

Over all, I am quite pleased with this episode, and it has encouraged me to want to see more episodes.
Now we seem to be pointed in a good direction, the Earth-bound command structure is taking decisive steps to get the crew home.
Sure, Rush sabotaged the gate so it wouldn’t blow them all up, BUT this time he told them all that he was responsible.
He actually connected with the stranded crew and even smiled a bit. I felt that he conveyed a sense of fatherly protection for them.

I believe that he did some soothing as well, when he mentioned that when he felt the gate was capable and situations were right, that he intended to try dialing home for them. I do believe that at some point, the crew will be able to act as a unified body, making decisions together.
I would also like to add that, this time the Sci-Fi element was tangible. The story made a real connection with me for the first time.
Joe even threw us some cool unexpected curve balls when the communication stones failed twice.
When the Stargate itself began overloading we were treated to a believable lightning display.

For me, everything came together in this pivotal episode.
I plan to watch it all over again just to be sure I didn’t miss anything.
I have already viewed it twice, first time expecting the same old thing and discovering something happened.
Second time with more attention to the details.
But this time I will be looking for the little hidden clues that Joe sometimes leaves lying around.

  83. Hey Joe. I’ve been reading your blog since Season 4 of Atlantis and I have always enjoyed your thoughts, tirades, rants and ruminations. I have rarely posted on your blog, however certain times can call me out from the shadows. Most recently, angry bloggers not liking some of the “teenage angst” being portraied in SGU.

    1. This is your blog. We are your guests. If people do not follow your rules, kick them out. That is, if irritating pricks post negative (not criticsm just plain rude, obnoxious ‘the sun revolves around the Earth’) type of attitude just prevent them from being able to post. IP ban, username or email ban or whatver wordpress does to prevent morons from giving the cast and crew of SGU a hard time.

    2. This has been said thousands of times and I don’t believe it’s been said enough. Col. Young and Rush and Eli are by far the best made characters on the show thus far. Louis with his deep, charming yet authorative voice is perfect for the role. I love in ‘Earth’ how he makes the IOA and Home World Security reps seem like they are wasting his time at the end of the episode.

    3. Rush. I think the only way I can summarize him is that he cares more for the Destiny then he does anything else in his world.

    Questions!!!
If you wish, could you please tell us your thoughts on how the characters have progressed thus far and what you plan on doing with them in the future? Would you have done anything differently – say during a spin session you were completely opposed to the current canon on the show? Any upcoming episodes where certain characters who haven’t had as much of the spotlight shone upon them get pushed, catapulted or FTL’d into it?

    Thank you for your time.

  84. @ Valaur

Yes, of course – longtime fans who disagree with something should quite obviously be shut down, because expressing anything halfway negative is bad press.

I remember watching Episode 200 of Stargate SG-1, where it mocked at itself. Here was a show that was science fiction, peppered with a good amount of humor and enough courage to not take itself too seriously.

To me, that is at the heart of Stargate. Good, inspirational science fiction that I can kick back and enjoy. Once you start taking yourself too seriously, and once you start sexing it up for the MTV generation, you are driving away your most loyal fans.

There is a particular quote at the end of that very episode that I rather enjoyed:

Science fiction is an existential metaphor that allows us to tell stories about the human condition. Isaac Asimov once said, “Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinded critics and philosophers of today, but the core of science fiction, its essence, has become crucial to our salvation, if we are to be saved at all.”

However, SGU seems to have forgotten that entirely. Instead, we are served with drama and sex, and stereotypes.

Worse yet, everything from the set to the writing, acting and the story lines are mediocre at best. Not to mention stereotypes a camera shooting style that’s reminiscent of a Bourne movie.

No, this is not Stargate. This is not even true science fiction, just space opera. The series should be called Stargate: 90210.

Thank you for driving away yet another loyal fan, Mr. Mallozzi, one who will never watch another Stargate franchise.

  85. I am growing somewhat tired of the soapier elements of the show. Presumably these first episodes were like an extended pilot episode and we’re going to be getting to the real meat of the show next week. Otherwise… well, we seem to be repeating some of the worst problems of Atlantis, and introducing new ones in addition.

Really, are these the best scripts that you could come up with for the introduction to the new series?

I’m also surprised that so many people have leaped to the conclusion that Telford is going to lie to / sleep with Mrs. Young, ignoring the possibility that he’s going to (for example) present her with a list of STDs she may just have been exposed to.

  86. Sorry Mr. Mallozzi, but after a long run this is where I get off the Stargate franchise. I lasted a half hour of Earth and said, “What’s the point?” and shut it down. As the joke goes, I have plenty of seasons of SG1/SGA disks to watch in mother’s basement now and they won’t ever give me motion sickness. There won’t ever be any SGU disks here in this house.

You’re a brave man writing and maintaining this blog over the years. Thanks.

  87. Joe,

You don’t disappoint! You hyped ‘TIME’ and were spot on! I’ve been a Stargate fan for years, and I know it might just be favouring the new shiny toy syndrome, but I say Time has got to be one of the best Stargate episodes from all franchises. I found it extremely well thought out, incredibly acted, visually stunning and overall…. incredible. I love a show that you can sit back, put your feet up and enjoy, but at the same time engage and entertain your mind. I also love the whole shut down the brain and enjoy the big explosions episodes (some SG1 & SGA come to mind) but I find Universe to be the “Thinking fans Stargate”. With Time being a Masterpiece. I love the show, kudos to all the cast and crew. I hope to hear positive news soon about a season 2 pickup, and/or movie go aheads. Keep the good work up, I’m sure you have. I can’t wait for Friday nights!

Oh yeah, just to clarify for my wife. The human remains found near the Kino, they belonged to long since dead Dr. Rush, as he had gone far back in time, correct?

    Thank you.
