Tonight’s the night!  9:00 p.m. on SyFy (Space for you Canadians).  Make sure to tune in.  And make sure that everyone you know is tuning in!

Plenty of early morning excitement at the Bridge Studios with Global Television broadcasting live from the location, offering up behind-the-scenes glimpses and interviews with the cast and crew.  Alas, I’m at home today and missed all the fun but, according to Exec. Producer Carl Binder, it went swimmingly.  The high point was an interview with some of the cast members in which actor Jamil Walker Smith (SGU’s Ronald Greer) made a straight-faced passing reference to the two years of training in zero-G that the actors had to endure prior to filming.  He seemed so earnest, in fact, that the interviewer apparently took him at his word and didn’t even call him on it.

Carl also informed me that we all received bottles of champagne in advance of our premiere, compliments of former Stargate Exec. Producer Martin Gero.  “What did you send him for the premiere of Bored to Death?”asked Carl.  I considered for all of two seconds: “Nothing.”  Another awkward pause and then Carl: “Neither did I.”  Damn!  When you think about it, Martin Gero is really making us look bad.  What a jerk!  Oh, we’ll drink his champagne alright, but we won’t enjoy it.  Much!  (P.S. Martin’s show, Bored to Death airs Sunday nights at 9:30 pm. following Curb Your Enthusiasm).

Finally, an extra special treat for you soon-to-be Stargate: Universe fans.  I turn this blog over to actor David Blue, SGU’s resident uber-geek Eli Wallace, for his much-anticipated Q&A.  Almost every review to date has lauded David’s performance in Air I, II, and III, citing his engaging onscreen presence and his character’s sense of humor.  All great except that the best is yet to come – and by “the best”, I refer to David’s stand-out performances in some of the show’s more emotionally resonant scenes.  He’s much, MUCH more than just “the funny guy”.  That said, he IS pretty damn funny.

So, like Brian J. Smith’s (Lieutenant Matthew Scott) Q&A before it, this Q&A is intended to introduce you to the actor, the character, and give you a little teaser of the upcoming series.  Several months from now, once you’re all well-versed in SGU and its various players, I hope to have both David and Brian (in addition to a slew of other cast and crewmembers) back on this blog for another round.

But for now, I turn things over to David…

DB: Hey everyone! Before I even start answering the boatload of questions you graciously submitted, I just wanted to thank you all for the interest. I’m insanely excited to see what you and the rest of planet Earth think of the show. And just the thought that all of you have questions for me before you even really get to “meet” the character of Eli is a wonderful show of support. Love you all! And on to the grilling!!!

(A warning: I type stream of consciousness, so I apologize if you get annoyed with my ellipses or commas.)

Caitlyanna writes: “Being a Stargate fan, how intense has it been knowing the expectations of the fans? Does it get nerve-racking?”

DB: Well, Caitlyanna, I kind of enjoy it. I mean, it’s amazing to think that there is already a very devoted and passionate group of people before our show even premieres. I don’t think a lot of other shows can claim something so incredible. So, in a way, it’s comforting to know that there are people out there who really want this show to be phenomenal AND have such high expectations. It gives us all something to work towards and when we achieve it, something to be proud of. I think it’s only nerve-wracking when we meet you guys face-to-face, because then you can throw things at us. *laugh* Please don’t.

“What was the most memorable experience on set so far?”

DB: To me, the things that really stick out are the scenes where the rest of the world melts away and you find yourself truly “in it”. In past shows, this might only happen with certain actors or situations, but it’s a testament to the quality of talent we have on this show that I find it happening quite a bit. The first time was a scene from “Air” with Robert Carlyle. The man is so brilliant to be with that you find the world, with all of the cameras and lights, to melt into fantasy and the world of the Destiny and SGU to become real. It really is a thrill as an actor and a privilege. On a dorky side-note, I love scenes with all of us main cast together. We really do get along well in real life and enjoy each other’s company. Because of this, we have a blast working in the same room. Sometimes too much. There’s a lot of laughter on our set. Which is funny when you consider the situation we’re all in.

Specifically, I think any of my initial interactions with the technology were pretty memorable. When Eli first discovers… well… we’ll call them “things” for now… he has to learn how to use them. It was kind of a great “oh yeah” moment when I first realized that anything I decided on — as far as how the devices work and are controlled — will be the official way it’s used from here on out, for everyone. We’re literally writing the book on the different devices. Especially having just re-watched “Galaxy Quest” with some of my castmates, I felt a lot of pressure to make sure I did it in a way that made sense… at least enough for the people who eventually develop the technology to base it off of. 🙂 Once you see how everything works, if you pay attention, you’ll see that there is usually a technique and specific controls for everything I do in the show. I need to have that established for myself to make it feel real.

Aside from that? Two words. New Mexico. Wow. Just… wow.

Ytimyona writes: “I know you’re a huge science fiction fan. Which do you prefer, Star Wars or Star Trek? Which is your favorite Trek?”

DB: That’s a hard one Ytimyona… I love them both. I do have to admit that Star Trek will always have a special place in my heart. I was a HUGE “Star Trek: The Next Generation” fan growing up. It was a show that a group of friends and I always spoke about and found things in to get excited about. So much so that I will admit to dressing up as Riker once or twice. Heehee. It really was a great allegory sometimes and had amazingly interesting stories to tell. I’ve continued being a fan of the show into the movies and will probably freak out when I meet Jonathan Frakes or Patrick Stewart at some convention I attend for “SGU”. It’s an odd thing Brian J. Smith and I have found in common. And the fact that Robert Carlyle is a fan of the original “Star Trek” just shows how sustaining a franchise like that can be. It’s impressive.

“You and the SGU cast all seem to hang out and have a good time together, whether you are at work or off. Did you know any of the cast before you got the role, or did you all just kind of bond instantly?”

DB: Nope. I had never met any of the cast until the beginnings of “SGU”. Apparently, I met Alaina Huffman at the screen test… and I remember SEEING Louis, Elyse and Brian. But at the time I didn’t register them. I was so concentrated on the screen test! But from the beginning it was apparent that we had some special people on our hands. From day one we’ve all kind of jelled and found common ground. I am proud to call them all friends now. Honestly, I think nothing of it anymore when we all go out to dinner, to see movies, to play ‘Rock Band’ or anything of the sort. It just feels natural. It’s only when people ask me questions like these that I think about how there are probably lots of other shows that don’t have that kind of connection. It makes me feel lucky, really. Of course, check back in season 5 when we’ve all stopped talking and hate everything we stand for. (HA! Just kidding.)

“When you were on set with Alex O’Loughlin for Moonlight, did he keep his American accent when the cameras weren’t rolling? It’s gotta be tough to maintain that! (Sorry, I’ve been dying to know!)”

DB: You know, Alex really is a trip. He’s such a great guy, but you probably don’t realize how hilarious he is. Wonderful sense of humor. I think it’s why we became friends quickly. He apparently loves to screw with people, because I would often find that between scenes he would randomly switch from his (natural) Australian accent to American to British. Mid-sentence sometimes! It seemed so effortless for him. It was pretty impressive. But often I would find myself playing catch-up because I was so taken aback by the change.

BlueCello writes: “if you could be (play) a character in one of the other “star” franchises, who would you choose to be (or play)”

DB: I don’t think it would ever happen, but how cool would it be to play Han Solo? I’m sure that’s what everyone says, but you get to do it all! You can be the hero, the funny guy, the romantic, EVERYTHING! Of course, I don’t know who could do it better than Harrison Ford, so I’d probably just ruin it. So… runner up? I’d love to be Q from “ST: TNG”. He just got to have so much fun! And, come on, who doesn’t want to be omnipotent?

“Whom do you fanboy?”

DB: I have to be honest, BlueCello… I don’t know if it’s the phrasing or if I’m an idiot, but I’m not 100% sure what you mean. I’m guessing you mean who do I freak out over if/when I meet? So, I’m going to answer THAT. 🙂 I tend to not freak out over any old actor, though I also recognize EVERYONE. I’ve always had a good memory for fellow actors. But the people who make me feel like a giddy fanboy are the ones I truly respect as actors (or their projects.) I’ve become extremely tight-lipped when I met Matthew Perry (love “Friends”), Eddie Izzard, Kevin Smith, Courtney Cox, Katee Sackhoff (GORGEOUS and incredibly sweet woman in real-life once I overcame my anxiety), Jessica Biel, Jeffrey Tambor (with my voiceover agent), etc… At Comic-Con this past year, I was lucky enough to have wonderful fun with a lot of the “Battlestar Galactica” cast at our party, but when I met Edward James Olmos after our panel, I’m pretty sure I just looked like a sweaty scared little freak. I could barely talk to the man. As a nerd, I’d freak if I ever met Mark Hamill, Jonathan Frakes, Scott Bakula, or anyone I grew up loving.

PoorOldEdgarDerby writes: “Should we see Eli as a regular joe and relatable, or chide him for not working to his potential, even if he outshines the normies (i.e. average intellegent folk)?”

DB: Actually, PoorOldEdgarDerby, I’m so proud of how the writers created Eli. He really is a vessel for the audience. He’s someone to relate to & someone to experience the world through. And really, what prevents him from working to his potential is simply that he let his life get in the way. And kind of let HIMSELF get in the way. He’s afraid of failure, afraid of disappointing people. But when you are thrust into situations with a bit more… shall we say, weight, to them… you tend to lose that option. I think everyone can relate to a fear of failure. The great strive to work past that. And I hope, over the episodes/seasons, you will see growth in him …and then be able to relate even more.

Otros Ojos writes: “Question for David Blue: Eli Wallace – Playboy, Hot Video Games Roundup, or Astrophysics Monthly? Or something else?”

DB: Who says he can only subscribe to one? 😉 Though he DOES live with his Mom. Don’t know if she’d be cool with Playboy.

Shirt ‘n Tie writes: “Thinking back to the other shows, if you could have auditioned, given your choice, what role would you most liked to have landed? McKay / Jackson / Sheppard?”

DB: I would never in a million years even TRY to PRETEND I’d play any of those roles better than the originals. However, I would’ve loved playing Daniel Jackson. Not only did he start as the nerd, but he grew into such a badass! How cool must that be for Michael?! He’s like a freaking super-spy, brilliant… I mean he freaking ASCENDED! Sheesh.

o6untouchable writes: “As an actor, are there any aspects, gadgets and technologies, particular plot lines or specific aliens from SG-1 and Atlantis that you personally would enjoy the opportunity to act opposite; always wanted to play a Goa’uld, act in a scene with an Asgard, etc?”

DB: As a dork, I think it’d be really cool to act opposite an Asgard. I’d be a little freaked out, having read “Communion”. However, I’d love to say I’d done it. Though I’m sure seeing however they really make the Asgard work might ruin the magic a bit.

Anais33 a ecrit: “Parlez vous un peu français?”

DB: Un peu. — excuse me for answering the rest in English. I took 3 years of Advanced French in high school. Which sadly means that I now have only retained enough of it to say assorted curse words, ask where random things are and point out a few geographical staples. Sad… but also slightly funny. I believe I was a member of the French National Honor Society as well. I’m ashamed. I think I should return my membership card. Ou est le card-returning-box?

EternalDensity writes: “Have you tried to get any other cast (or crew) members on Twitter? How have they responded?”

DB: Where have you been?!? I am proud of say that I’ve already recruited both Ming-Na and Brian J. Smith. In fact, I claim some responsibility for the additions of John G. Lenic, Patrick Gilmore and James Bamford as well. I’ve been trying to wear down a few more of them… but it’s harder than you think. I’m willing to bet money that I’ll be able to get Peter Kelamis (Brody), Jen Spence (Park) and a few others as well. My crowning achievement will be getting either Louis Ferreira or Robert Carlyle (a pipe-dream). Though Louis DID tweet me already from somebody else’s account once!

“What do you think of the Back to the Future trilogy?”

DB: Love, love, love, LOVE. Is that clear enough? I have to say that “Back to the Future II” will always hold a special place in my heart. I just loved the future so much. And hoverboards! I was convinced there was a real one out there somewhere. But all of them are amazing and I have such respect for Michael J. Fox. He’s just amazing. Back then AND now. I loved his work on “Rescue Me” and his work for Parkinson’s research is beyond humbling.

Otros Ojos writes: “Have you been a sci-fi fan from an early age, or how did that come about?”

DB: In a way, it’s kind of always been there Otros Ojos. I’ve always been a huge fan of television, film, stories of any kind really. So the fantastical world of sci-fi fits in there quite well. And there were such great movies growing up that exposed me to that world. I was a HUGE fan of “Krull” as a kid, “D.A.R.R.Y.L” was my grandfather’s favorite movie to show us, “Project X”, “Gattaca”, “War Games”, loved “Space Camp” (even WENT to Space Camp because of its inspiring me to want to be an astronaut for a while there)… the list goes on forever. These days the actual phrase “sci-fi” has grown to include so much you’d be hard-pressed to find a show that’s NOT sci-fi. I love that. It feels like it’s encompassing the world now and people don’t even realize it.

Iamza writes: “What was it about the shows that drew you in as a viewer, and were you more of a fan of one show over the other?”

DB: I loved the world of the shows. I really did. I was a huge fan of the original movie, so the idea of continuing that world with “SG1” will always hold a special place in my heart. Plus I really enjoyed the way the original team worked off each other. It was enough to make me a fan early on. The writers really did a good job of creating some interesting and thought-provoking stories in that world that made you think. And even better, they kept a sense of humor throughout. I mean, if “Wormhole X-treme” isn’t a hilarious idea, I don’t know what is. “Stargate Atlantis” came about when I was very busy in my personal life. I’ve seen all of the episodes, but I wasn’t able to devote myself to them as much. It became something I enjoyed on VHS tape or my DVR when I got home from work or a long day of auditioning. It was kind of my escape from my regular life. So I’m very thankful to that, but “SG1” will always hold a special place in my heart.

“why did you get onto twitter in the first place? Was it partly in response to some of the attitudes expressed online about SGU when the series was first announced?”

DB: Honestly, I was a member of Twitter before “SGU”. In fact, I joined back when I lived in L.A. still. I had a bunch of friends on it who constantly told me how much fun they were having, so I joined. Actually, I started with two accounts. One for my career and one a little more hidden for my personal thoughts. I’ve since deleted the personal one and just find it so much easier to put all my thoughts on the one official Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/DavidBlue — though those kids have YET to verify me. Sheesh!). I use it for a few reasons. On the one hand, it’s great for getting up-to-date news. I know things going on in the world at the touch of an iPhone button. Also, I can make myself laugh following some of my favorite actors/comedians. Also, I get to see what my friends are up to. A lot of my college friends are in NYC, LA friends are back there, family in Florida/NY, so it’s a way to touch base. And then as an actor, I get to connect with the fans. I often feel bad that I can’t reply to people all the time or often, but thus is the wonderful curse of being busy and working, no? Though if I’ve helped ease any of the tension or worry people had when “SGU” was first announced, I’d consider that a great compliment. Because the truth is, you should all be excited! And it seems like you all are! Yay!

“SGU is touted to be about a bunch of ordinary folk living through extraordinary events. What, in your mind, makes these people so ordinary? I mean, Eli Wallace is a slacker genius, not just some random Joe off the street. What is it that you think most makes Eli someone anybody can relate to?”

DB: “Touted”, eh? Hmmmm…  These people are so ordinary because they simply ARE. It’s not a military “type”, a scientist “type”, a civilian “type” or anything like that (not that they were on the previous incarnations either… AT ALL!) But they’re so much more than that. They have flaws that will bring them down to the human level. They make mistakes that they either need to overcome or atone for. They desire companionship, friendship, respect, acclaim, survival, familiarity… things that ANY of us would desire. It’s important to remember that casting breakdowns are just that. They are often written by people who aren’t actually writing the characters, in their own words, and are used for the purposes of giving a general idea to the agents submitting their talent for the roles. It’s a tool, not a blueprint. There’s so much more to the character. Even that first script fleshed out more than just a “slacker genius”. And as I’ve said before, he’s only a “slacker” in that he hasn’t seen the need to apply himself fully. There’s a lot of potential in Eli, a lot that he COULD do, but as he sees it: isn’t it safer just to not fail? I’ve known many brilliant people in my life. Each in their own way. Some with an incredible drive/motivation, some that seemed to only focus themselves on trivial matters.

Think about it the next time you walk down the street. Just the next time you’re walking to a restaurant, or back from taking the bus or on your way to a movie. Look into the eyes of a handful of people who you pass and let your mind wander. Think about what they might be possibly on their way to do. Is it what they’ve always wanted to do? Is it what they do to make money to support the family they love? Maybe they’re lucky and it’s both. Is it the thing that made them passionate for the first time in their lives? Are they living up to their potential in their chosen field? What is their secret passion or hidden talent that they might’ve had to give up? I think you’d find that there are a lot of very interesting, brilliant people wandering out there. And quite a few of them may not have ever realized it. Now… take away the safety net. Make it about life-or-death. Would they still hold back? That’s a test of a person’s drive. …also, we have no idea how many of those people you considered ARE living their dreams… ARE living to their potential… HAVE secrets. We’re a very diverse people, us humans. 😛

I think what makes Eli especially relatable is that he comes from OUR world. He hasn’t grown up in a world where the Stargate program exists (as far as he knows). There is no such thing as aliens (as far as we know). Technology is as advanced as the latest thing Apple decides to announce. Everything he wants to be real, that he wishes were real, is really described by the term: “sci-fi”. Now, what would happen if it turns out it’s all real? How would YOU, Iamza, react if you got beamed up by General O’Neill and he told you it was all real. Don’t tell anyone… and we need your help. I think that’s something we can all imagine and even more-so hope WOULD happen! 🙂  I think other people can relate to Eli for a simple reason… perhaps a selfish one. Because I can. I read it, and see where I’d feel that too. But I guess the true test will be when you watch it yourself… no?

“Also, there have also been a lot of comparisons drawn between Eli and McKay — what do you think most distinguishes Eli from the character of a young Rodney McKay”

DB: A lot, I hope! I would never, in a million years, even try to fill David’s shoes. He’s great. But a huge difference is simply their background. McKay joined the program voluntarily and learned along the way. Eli has never heard of any of this and is suddenly thrust into the world. Also, I think McKay is a little more emotionally (socially) stunted than Eli. Eli wants to make the human connections and find what he has in common with others. He sees good in people, however small a sign, and wants to draw it out. While Eli may not think there are a LOT of people out there who are worth it, I think McKay tends to view MOST others as a little bit more trouble than they are worth.

Col. Mustard writes: “Do you play video games? If so what is your favorite game?”

DB: I love playing video games! It’s sad how little I get the chance these days. Lately, I’ve been playing a lot of “Rock Band” (Beatles and the others) with my cast-mates. But on my own, I’ve always loved Halo, Final Fantasy (earlier versions), Secret of Mana (SNES), “LEGO Batman/Indiana Jones/Star Wars” (XBox 360)… used to love Tradewars, Lair of the Dark Knight, etc (BBS days).

Btw, YOU did it, in the study, with the candlestick. I’m just sayin’.

“If you could be a member of the crew of any Star Trek crew which would it be?”

DB: “ST:TNG”. They had gotten past a lot of their wars with other races and grown so much. It became about exploration for a while, and that’s exciting.

“Have you ever had an opportunity to use your trifecta talents (acting, singing and dancing) and if so, is it something we can catch on DVD?”

DB: Actually yes I have. My degree is a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre as well as Acting. So, I’ve performed in a lot of musicals throughout my life, even originating a role in a new musical. I’ve done tours of some musicals, and different shows around the U.S. I’ve also performed in a number of musical benefits, including “A Night at Sardi’s” (with the Alzheimer’s Association), singing onstage with some of my “Ugly Betty” co-stars, Jason Alexander, Vanessa Williams, Zach Levy, Kristen Bell, etc. On DVD? That I’m not sure of. Not that I know of!

Major D. Davis writes: “So is it hard to repeat those exact actions throughout several takes, especially when the camera is moving and covering diffent parts of your body and face as you act or react to a situation. Does it become second nature after a while, or is it always a challenge?”

DB: As an actor, you break down the scene and the thoughts/feelings of the character. The mannerisms or what-have-you stem from what you are thinking, your actions and your motivation. If you’re staying true to your tactics/intentions for a scene, it’s easy to repeat what you need to because you’re keeping that from take-to-take. Also, our shooting style in this show allows a little more freedom, especially since the camera can be anywhere.

Wolfenm writes: “Loved you as Logan in Moonlight! If it had been renewed, or if they ended up doing a movie, would you want to go back, if your schedule allowed for it? And would you have wanted to be full-time or stay recurring?”

DB: Hell yeah! I loved playing Logan and had a lot of fun with the cast. I hope that Joel (Silver) ends up deciding to do a movie and would be honored to be invited back. I think a lot of us felt that there were more stories to tell and were looking forward to season 2 when it was unexpectedly cancelled. Alex and I have talked about the movie a few times and I always make sure to remind him how much I’d love to reprise our roles. He’s fun to work with.

If they had invited me to be a full-time cast member, I would’ve gladly taken the opportunity. I was proud to see the role of Logan grow as the season progressed and very excited with some of the ideas I was hearing from the showrunners about the upcoming 2nd season. I’d still kill to see some of those scripts! Of course, if it had continued, I would never be so lucky to be on “SGU” (not that I knew anything about it at the time)… so it’s hard to imagine.

“Every fan has things they would like to see happen with thier fave characters, whether it’s seeing them get a love interest or suffer terrible angst or becoming a superhero or king. What are some things you would like to see Eli go through, either on the show itself or in the “what if” realm of fanfic?”

DB: I truly want to learn more about Eli just as much as the rest of you. Where we stand now in the season, we’ve gotten to explore so much, but there’s only so much you can do in 20 episodes. I’m really hoping to see more of how Eli became who he is, a little more of his past, and more of the relationships that have burgeoned on the ship already. I want to see him grow as a person and get to know his fellow crew members a bit more. Learn more about this world he just got sucked into. Try to find a purpose in it and work towards learning his potential. Try to break down the walls of a few other people on the ship… find out what makes Rush tick… why is Greer like that? … why is friendship so easy with Scott?… there are so many options. My friend (a movie-reviewer) put it best after seeing the pilot: “I love it because the potential is limitless. There are so many things that can be done.” I’m excited to see what the writer’s come up with. I love the parts of Eli they’ve revealed to me so far, so I’m excited for *knock-on-wood* season 2 to discover some more levels.

On a completely side-note, I’d love to see Eli get a little attention from the ladies. Or more attention. Well… you’ll see. 😉

“Who would you most want to see guest star on SGU, and in what sort of role?”

DB: Ooooooo. Good question. I selfishly would love to get Alex O’Loughlin (my “Moonlight” co-star) on the show. But I know he’s insanely busy with his new show “Three Rivers”, so I don’t know if he’d have the time. In general, the-powers-that-be have gotten some really interesting and talented guest stars already, so I’m excited to see where that grows once the show is on the air and people have a higher awareness of the project. There are so many good actors out there right now, I can’t even narrow it down to just a few.

As a fan, I’d love to play opposite David Hewlett. Some Eli/McKay banter would be fun.

Crazymom1 writes: “…what other work that you’ve done do I really need to get from Netflix and catch up on?”

DB: Netflix-wise? I’m very, very proud of my work on “Ugly Betty”. I highly recommend catching up on that. Start from the beginning of the show so you can really get a taste for it and the wonderfully-acted characters. And then you’ll run into my introduction as ‘Cliff St. Paul’ during season 2. I loved not only playing a really optimistic version of myself, but also becoming so proud of the role and the way the fans reacted to him. I was humbled by all of the reactions. People would constantly tell me “Cliff is exactly like my boyfriend” or “Cliff is me” and hearing how proud people were to have a character like him on tv. It was more than I could have hoped for and a joy to play. Being on set with Michael Urie, Becki Newton, America Fererra… it was amazing. They are truly brilliant actors and genuine people. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience at the time. I’m so proud of it, that I hope to continue it!

Chevron7 writes: “Once the action starts, does Eli relate to it all like playing a video game or is he a little freaked?”

DB: Hey Chevron7! Will you be changing your name to Chevron9 once we premiere? Heehee. I think he reacts pretty realistically. I mean, even a hardcore video-game geek can only see the parallels to a certain extent. Once your life is in danger, or things are exploding, it stops being fascinating and starts being about survival. Though Eli definitely copes with certain situations by relating it to things he’s seen in tv/films or games… but that’s more for the benefit of easing tension, relating to people, etc. Again, survival becomes just survival at a certain point.

“What film or tv prop do you wish you had displayed at your house?”

DB: Displayed at, or installed? I’d love to have a working Holodeck. HOW COOL WOULD THAT BE?!?!

I wouldn’t mind having a huge D.H.D. that controlled everything in my house. Like an ancient universal remote. I know, it’s a bit bulky, but tell me that wouldn’t be awesome?

DP writes: “What’s the best line anyone ever wrote for one of your characters?”

“How is working in Vancouver different from working in other places?”

DB: You should’ve asked me this yesterday! It’s raining today! Other than that, it’s absolutely beautiful. I love this city. I’d never had the privledge of visiting Vancouver before “SGU” but I have to say I’ve grown to love this city. It’s wonderfully clean and the people are so friendly. I also love how active everyone is. If it’s a nice day, then EVERYONE is out running, riding bikes, hiking, exploring, kayaking… it’s quite motivating. And thanks to some of my Canadian cast-mates, I’ve explored a bunch of the city. Part of me selfishly hopes for season 2 of the show so I have time to see more of it though!

GrapesofWraith writes: “What’s the funniest thing on set that’s happened to you/seen/experienced/or heard of so far?”

DB: Well, Steinbeck, that’s a fun one. Elyse and I have become good friends this season. And we tend to have the same sense of humor. So putting us into scenes together usually translates into a lot of joking around. There was a scene recently where she and I (Chloe/Eli) had a bit of banter that involved some inadvertent tongue-twisters. In addition to a LONG day of shooting before the scene. Essentially, I blew a line and the two of us devolved into such a fit of laughter that we could NOT get it back together. I felt bad for everyone else in that scene, but we were just GONE.

Also, Brian RARELY drops any of his lines. Really, always on his A-game. But when he does, he tries so hard to keep the scene going that he’ll throw out whatever he THINKS his line MIGHT BE. I find it hilarious, every time, without fail.

“Coffee or Tea? (thanks to Trish aka Whovian for the inspiration for that one!)”

DB: Depends on the time of day. I end up drinking more coffee than I’d like with this show. Usually in the morning since we have a lot of early calls. But in general I try to avoid coffee. I love tea though. As a singer, I’ve grown to love Throat Coat tea. Works wonders when you have a sore throat (which happens in some of these sets we shoot in). So, when I’m sick… it’s all Throat Coat.

Out and about, celebrting Elyse's birthday.
Out and about, celebrting Elyse's birthday.

Zoe writes: “First off, first saw you on Ugly Betty and thought you were the most adorable thing EVER. Hahaha! My question is really random, but, if you got to play any superhero, which one would you be?”

DB: Awww, thanks Zoe. Very sweet of you to say. I truly loved playing Cliff.

I know this might be a cliche answer, but you’ve got to love Superman. I mean, invulnerable, amazing powers, smart… can’t beat him. Though I do hold a lot of respect for Batman for being just a MAN. …but Robert Downey Jr. ruined me a bit. He was so brilliant as Iron Man… grrr… too many choices… brain melting… AAAAARRRRGGGH!!!!

Suziesbluefeather writes: “I’m just a bit curious about your web site. Why did you chose to quote T. E. Lawrence ‘the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with eyes open, to make it possible.'”

DB: I’ve always loved that quote. I’ve done a lot of theater, and as you may-or-may-not know, in playbills the cast/crew write bios. I know a lot of people list their previous credits, but I’ve always hated that. I mean, I’ve done enough, and who wants to just read a list? So I would just write personal notes to friends or loved ones, and usually end it with a quote. And it was usually that quote. I love the idea of dreaming so much that you will it into existence. The idea that dreams, desires, etc. can exist if we want them bad enough. I mean, hell, in a way my career is an example of that. I’ve always dreamed of making a living doing what makes me happy… and now I am. Besides, I’m a kid at heart, and I’m dreaming during the day all the time. You think I don’t play superhero in my imagination while I’m riding on the SkyTrain? Think again. 😉

Artdogspot writes: “If you could work with any film director (living or dead), who would pick?”

DB: Ack! Such pressure, Artdogspot! Love Martin Scorsese, Steven Soderberg, Steven Spielberg, Orson Welles, James Cameron, Neil Simon, Woody Allen, Alfred Hitchcock, Ingmar Bergman, Francis Ford Coppola, Mike Judge… So much good work out there, I’d love to do it all!!! These days, I specifically would love to work once (to start) with Judd Apatow. I feel like a lot of my career has led to getting the chance to work with him soon.

“Which comedians have influenced your work the most?”

DB: Love Eddie Izzard, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Mitch Hedberg, Richard Jeni, Denis Leary, Steve Martin… too many to name. Anyone who makes me laugh has influenced me to be a better person. Anyone who makes me scared to get up there and do it myself? That’s a talented person. I respect comedians so much. It’s something I’ve always loved and have no really gotten up the courage to actually do. I respect it so much, I don’t want to ruin it. They’re up there being funny as THEMSELVES. And they are up there, at the mercy of the audience, armed only with their material. Amazing.

“Cake or death?”

DB: I believe I ordered the vegetarian platter.

Jocelyn writes: “Knowing your musical theater background, have there been any spontaneous breaks into song on set?”

DB: Oh hells yes. Most of us in the cast are very musical. It’s not often that you’re able to walk around set without hearing music somewhere. In general, music tends to stick in our heads. Elyse is a big example of this. She listens to one song on her way to work and we’re all subjected to it for the rest of the day. I am guilty as well. For some reason I still cannot explain, I had the theme song for “Sanford and Son” running on repeat in my head for WEEKS. Ridiculous. Now, have we staged any full-on musicals? Not yet. Though you’d be surprised to learn that a lot of us in the cast have played different roles in varying productions of “Little Shop of Horrors” somewhere in our career (I played Seymour in a critically-acclaimed college production)… so those numbers have been spontaneously performed a few times. Also, one of the first times we all really were hanging out off-set, there may or may not have been an impromptu (but very energetic) performance of ‘Seasons of Love’ from “RENT” that involved everyone. Maybe.

iMenchi writes: “If you had the option to have any part of your choosing in another franchise that you are a fan of, what would you choose and why?”

DB: Indiana Jones. Oh man, living those adventures. I used to play the soundtrack to “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” over and over (the cassette) and replay the movie in my head. Just living that man’s life. Of course, I’m saying this while completely pretending that “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” never happened. Because if it did, my answer will drastically change.

Lynn writes: “As a Stargate fan yourself… Do you think it’s continuing the franchise in a recognizable way or is it striking out in a totally different direction?”

DB: Well, Lynn, it’s somewhere in between. The world that “SGU” inhabits is the same world you’ve come to know and love from “SG1” and “Atlantis”. Same mythology, same creators, hell, even some of the same characters. So it’s not drawing a line in the sand in front of the past shows and saying “don’t cross this, this is what WE are now.” All we’re doing is taking this wonderful world that exists and growing from it. Introducing you to new characters in a completely different situation. We’re in the same theme park, but we’re just a different ride. I highly doubt that you can be a fan of the previous incarnations without finding things you love in “SGU”. It’s part of what we’re all most proud of. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Nobody “passed the torch to us”, but they used their torch to light ours. This is why it’s so great to have some of the original cast on our show. RDA, Amanda, Michael… they’re here because they still exist in this world we’re showing you. It’s the same world! And as a fan of the previous show, there are so many things that you have to look forward to. Some great throwbacks to both “SG1” and “Atlantis”. Enough to keep you feeling special, but not lose our new fans. I pride myself on being a character there to help bring the newbies on the ride with us!

AV Eddy writes: “David: How the hell are ya?”

DB: Well, AV Eddy, I’m pretty darned good. Thanks so much for asking. How about yourself?

GloriaLongMLBIT writes: “If they made an Moonlight movie (big IF) and they asked you to be in it, would you or could you? It would not be the same without the WHOLE cast.”

DB: I answered a similar question above, but wanted to answer this one too, because I agree. I can’t imagine a Moonlight movie without having everyone back. Of course, that might end up being part of the problem. Everyone has moved onto other projects that take up a bunch of time (a testament to some of the talent). It’d be great if the only problem was scheduling, no? I’d sure love the chance to work with Alex, Jason, Claudia, Jacob, etc again. We had so much FUN in that last episode!

“I believe you are gonna be a big hit in this show. How do you think you are gonna deal with all the Moonlight/Ugly Betty/SGU fans and how do you think they will differ from each other? and lastly, thank you David for being YOU”

DB: I’ve always loved how different my fans are. Every project I’ve done seems to draw in a different, yet equally passionate, group. I feel like I’m trying to win over the world one fraction of the population at a time. I may be overshooting here, but I’d LOVE for the “Moonlight”/”Ugly Betty” fans to come into the “SGU” world. I really feel like there is a lot in the show for everyone. There’s great character development, thought-provoking plots, amazing special effects, romance, pulse-pounding action, beautiful music, amazing cinematography… what’s not love? But then again, I’m a bit biased. You tell me after FRIDAY! EEK!

You know you've made it once you've got your own on-set chair.
You know you've made it once you've got your own on-set chair.

Dodoalda writes: “Does Eli like aliens?”

DB: As a general rule? I think Eli believes all aliens should have the rights and respect that the rest of us are all easily granted. I think he’s a bit outraged that aliens are treated differently. I mean, in the end, aren’t we all created equal? Except the Sith. Screw those guys. …and maybe the aliens from “Independence Day”. I mean, why the hell were they so pissed? The Borg had issues too. Oh well, nevermind.

Malaika writes: “Hi David, Will you ever go back to Ugly Betty?”

DB: God willing. I would welcome any chance to come back to “Ugly Betty” for one episode, 5 episodes or 15 episodes. Great cast, great writers, great crew, great role. All that it takes is for the timing to work out and, more importantly, for them to ask me. I’d be there in a heartbeat. Why? Do YOU want me back? 😉

R1015bill writes: “On paper, your new character Eli sounds a lot like Logan Griffen (less Logan’s confidence and being a vampire). How else do you think they differ?”

DB: Honestly, R1015bill, it was very important to me to make Eli a completely different person. I think all actors are terrified at ever making a role similar to one they’ve previously played. It’s more fun to explore different aspects of these people (and in a way, of yourself) than you have before. I spent a good deal of time before my initial audition for the role of Eli breaking down where I felt he was coming from. Inventing things from his past that fit with the initial mold I was provided (by Brad and Robert). Really getting inside of the character and filling him out. And most of the time, when I came to a fork in the road I found myself thinking “okay, how would Logan see this?” …and then going in the completely opposite direction. There are some crossovers there, but for the most part, they are completely different people. Logan, for one, was more into video games and the world of new technologies. (This is from my own mind, not necessarily the writers of “Moonlight”) I always envisioned Logan as an extremely old vampire. Even older than Mick St. James (Alex O’Loughlin). Probably just a little younger than Josef. Which is why I think Logan loved technology and computers… because they didn’t exist when he was human.

Eli, however, has grown up in THIS world and uses it as a tool to do what he loves. Challenging himself, connecting with like-minded people, solving problems. Eli is more of a TV/Film/pop-culture junkie. He relates to his world through the things he grew up with… his favorite shows, movies, etc. I could be wrong about this, as it’s something I came up with to help me approach the role and not necessarily something provided me by the brilliant writers/creators, but I’ve viewed Eli as somebody who plays video games to challenge himself. Because somebody says something in this one can’t be done, or something can’t be beaten or solved. Not because he just wants to waste time.

Also, Logan was a recluse. He did what he did to get the blood he needed to survive, or the money he needed to get more technology or blood. Eli WANTS to have friends, wants people to like him and to get to know them.

Pastrygirl writes: “: Which is the most difficult type of scene for you to shoot, technical scenes with greenscreen and special fx, or heavy character interaction scenes with lots of dialogue and emoting?”

DB: They’re both challenging in their own ways, Pastrygirl. What types of pastries do you like, anyway? … the greenscreen scenes require a lot of imagination and visualization, whereas the character scenes require a lot of preparation and being-in-the-moment. With theatre you get weeks and weeks of rehearsal to learn where your co-stars are coming from. With television and film, you often get only one rehearsal before you shoot. So you have to be ready to shoot when you get to set. And not just for the first scene, for all of them. And it’s often that a co-star will bring something to the table you weren’t expecting. Then it’s about knowing your character well enough to be able to run with it, to give-and-take. I love both aspects. Though I will say I’m spoiled. I have a well-trained, talented, smart cast. I trust their choices and know they’re willing to “play”.

Montrealer writes: “…does all the major actors in SGU have a stand-in?”

DB: Yes, we all do. Some really great ones, actually. We have a core group of stand-ins that are such hard-working people. They are there as long as we are, sometimes longer, doing a lot of hard work that never gets recognized.

Shawn Cassidy writes: “What was it like being the ‘tour guide’ for your fellow actors in this new universe introducing them to the lore?”

DB: I love every second of it. (Love “Da Doo Run Run” btw. 😉 ) It’s kind of funny how second nature it is now. I’ll just get a call here, or a text message there, asking me to explain something. Sometimes I feel guilty, like I’m taking away some of Brad, Robert, Joe or Carl’s fun. I think they sometimes enjoy explaining what something means, and calling it back to one of the other shows. But in general, I get excited telling the story of how it came to be and how it relates to the plot of our episode. It’s a bit of pressure though. I mean, if I screw up, because I’m not nearly as well-versed as a lot of you really die-hard fans, I just messed up someone else’s performance! Nah… I’ll keep pretending I know everything. Don’t blow my cover!

  1. “As a general rule? I think Eli believes all aliens should have the rights and respect that the rest of us are all easily granted. I think he’s a bit outraged that aliens are treated differently. I mean, in the end, aren’t we all created equal?”

Eli and I should get together, and give a good talking-to to Shep & Co. about the Wraith. Maybe before that ever-elusive SGA movie…if it ever sees the light of day. 😉

Thanks for the great Q&A to both David and Brian, who I think I forgot to thank the other day. I’ve been…distracted. 😛

  6. Joe – Thanks for this second great Q&A this week. David’s energy and enthusiasm for the show really jumps out at you. Again, what a great group of people in this cast. Can’t wait to watch this. Just a little more that four hours to go.

I am also going to make a point to watch Marti G’s show, Bored to Death, with or without champagne.

  7. Tonight’s the night! 9:00 p.m. on SyFy (Space for you Canadians).
Sorry, but I’ll be watching “Medium”.
(I thought you were Canadian, shouldn’t that be you be we?)

  8. Superb Q&A. Thanks David for answering so many questions in such great detail.

3 hours 15 minutes until it starts.

  9. Hi Joe! Good stuff! David really seems like a genuinely nice guy 🙂

@Das: Think you’ve got Wraith issues? I’m still having Daniel withdrawals! There’s Fudge Corruption cake at my house tonight – come on over!

  10. Wow, another great guy! I am so jealous (in a good way) that y’all get work with such fun, talented and smart people.

I can feel the buzz in Vancouver here in FLA. Felt it all day.
All the best to everyone !

  11. Hi Joe

Thanks for the 2 Q & A’s both were very thoughtful and long. I’m pretty amazed by David Blue… Can’t wait, starts in 2 1/2 hours!!! Gotta go and turn on the TV and make sure the SPACE channel is still on 🙂

    Elminster

  12. Thanks goes out to David Blue for the Q&A.

Tomorrow Oct 3rd is my 36th birthday. I’m so looking forward in watching Stargate Universe tonight. I haven’t program the DVR just incase something happens that otherwise cause to miss it.

  13. @Deni, I WANT CAKE!! Did you guys know that David Blue went to UCF- Univ. of Central FL.? My dtr. goes there , yah, another FL. person!! 2hrs. and 15 min. ’till SGU!! Sheryl

  14. @Sheryl: So, how dumb are we? We should’ve gotten together tonight. We could all spend the night at your house! 🙂

On a less happy note, Elway just ate dog poop. I kid you not.

@Das: Now it’s Fudge Corruption and Chocolate Mousse Bomb…

  15. Thank you, David Blue, for getting me re-excited to watch the premiere tonight.

I’ve been waiting impatiently to see the show for ages and this morning it was kind of like, “Wait. TODAY’S the day?”

A great interview. He seems like a genuinely funny down-to-earth guy with the added bonus of being a sci-fi nerd.

  16. I saw you in those pics with those two girls. I’m telling my cousin. LOL.

  17. OOOOOH DOCTOR Elyse Levesque? yes please. Very beautiful. If D-blue doesn’t woo her into marriage soon, I am coming to Vancouver on a catering gig. 😀 😀

Oh and if the show happens to suck, may your lasagna never taste the same!

    No pressure or anything.

    ;P

  18. Wow, another blow socks off Q&A!!!
    Thank you David Blue.

Only an hour and minutes away….woo hoo!

  19. A post before the show and perhaps another one after…
Great Q & A with David Blue, Thank you David, great answers, enjoyed muchly(is that a word??).. looking forward to tonights performance of everyone in SGU land. A little over an hour and counting.

  20. ya SGU is on at 6pm PST, take that easterners!

Joe this one is for you,
Yesterday I was on the bus and there was this really cute girl that kept looking up from her phone and checking me out. So we got to the skytrain and both got on the same car, she sat directly opposite from me, she continued to take glances at me and quickly look away whenever I happened to catch her and look back. I’m not a model, but I am a single good looking guy, and she was really cute so I figured what the hell. So a couple stops before I was getting off, I went over and sat down next to her. We started chatting a bit and hit it off, and I mean really well! I started off with the, hey I couldn’t help notice you were checking me out, and she countered with the, really I’m so embarassed. Then just as I got her name, my stop came! Already being late for a family dinner, I figure it not best to continue on the conversation and ignore my destination. So as I got up to leave the train, we exchanged pleasantries, and as I walked out I turned and said one last thing. “Hey! Don’t forget to watch Stargate Universe tomorow night.”

In hindsight I should have probably asked for her phone number.

  21. @ Deni – HA! Mr. Das JUST complained that there were no ‘goodies’ in the house (to which I said, ‘Hey! What about me??!’ 😡 ).

    I think I have frozen Thin Mints…

    (Of course, I have my stash of super-duper dark chocolate…so I’m set! 😀 )

And right now I’m eating taco salad…it really doesn’t go with the chocolate talk. 😛

    das

  22. Yah!

  24. WTF is it with so many commercials? They’re cutting these guys off in mid-sentence! Sheesh. A little confusing at first, but I’m really liking it! David Blue’s my fave so far.

  25. I love it so far but there are so many commercials it makes me want to throw something at my tv. I think there are 5 minutes of commercials for every 5 minutes of show here. It almost feels like scifi is purposely trying to piss people off. Was this really only a 1 hour episode but they decided to pack an hour of commercials into it? I have never seen a show with so many commercials before.

  26. Re the last pic (“Ohhhh, so THAT’S what it says.”) – It’s finally revealed! though I thought it was obvious all along.

  27. Pour l’instant mon personnage préféré est Eli, il est vraiment trop drôle!!

J’aime beaucoup les caméras colantes^^! Toute les villes du monde devraient en avoir pour lutter contre la délinquance!=)

  28. There are so many commercials that if I wasn’t a serious fan I would have changed the channel by now. This show is almost unwatchable. Every time it is going somwhere it cuts to a commercial break. The last one was 5 minutes of show followed by 2 and a half of commercials. A casual viewer would have stopped watching this show about 30 minutes ago. I have never seen so many commercials on a television show in my entire life. If the rest of this series has this many commercials nobody is going to watch it except for real fans. I think that the show is great but SyFy (sic) is ruining it.

  29. SGU was great!! I enjoyed the style of it and can’t wait until next week!

On the Q&A – I found it funny that David went to Space Camp, one because I have been there a few times myself and I actually worked there this summer!

  30. Great show Joe, just freakin’ awesome.
Kudo’s to you and the rest of the team.

And has the potential to be better than the previous 2 shows. Congrates again!

    Elminster

  31. Joe, just wanted to say I really enjoyed SGU. I’ll definitely be tuning in next week. The effects were amazing. The story kept me enthralled, and wonderful performances by all the actors. Great job to all!

  32. Great show Joe… Thanks man for a great new series. A huge freaking hug buddy. One question that wasn’t clear…. How many billion light years away from Earth is the Destiny and what kind of FTL do they use….. wasn’t so clear.

I liked Lt Scott … Great choice

  33. Since I have no cable I’ll be watching SGU first thing tomorrow on iTunes. (I bought the season pass.) No commercials (hooray!), but I can already tell I’m going to have to avoid reading comments here on Friday nights or Saturday mornings, or risk spoilers.

Closing my eyes and plugging my ears until I can download SGU tomorrow…

  34. I will be turning 30 this October 18th. I have never missed an episode of Stargate ever since I heard there was a show being made that continued after the movie. I am excited to know that stargate is still going strong and is embarking on a very cool new life.

    Your lasanga is safe.

  35. I am not happy that you are using BSG term in stargate, why not simply call it Hyper-space?

  36. Joe!!!! Loved the premier!! Can’t wait for next friday. One thing is bugging me though, why couldn’t they just use the kino to shut the door instead of having to kill someone?

    thanks
    -ZPB

  37. Il n’ya pas de réel génériqe mise à part l’énonciation des acteurs au début. C’est juste pour le pilote ou ça sera toujours comme cela?

Bonne nuit, il est 5h08 du matin et je vais me coucher.

    Bisou=)

  38. Wow, so much to take in, in the first episode, Great segeways on happenings, back and forward. Great job by everyone involved and I mean the writers and producers, and actors, and special effects, make-up, guys that blow things up, craft services, I hope I didn’t forget anyone. Wonderful!!
All those people, did anyone really get hurt on the flying thru the stargate? If not for all the darn commercials, would have been better, if they needed the money that bad, we could have gone with the bake sale thingy again, to make some money.. But all in all, very nice, looking forward to next week, maybe better to tape it and fast forward thru the commercials…
-I think you could have a hit on your hands, let us know how the revews go. Loved the kino (toy).

  39. Hey Joe!

Just finished watching SGU and I’m watching it again now! That should have sooooo been Lulu being walked in front of Eli’s house! Love the naming of the ship – Hammond!

Really, I enjoyed the show, I’m hooked. Rush, Eli and Scott are by far my favorites right now…

Thanks for sharing so much stuff!
    S

  40. Sooooo, totalllly, AWESOME!
You had me at the opening with the music, it was haunting and grabbing all at once.

LOVE IT and can’t wait til the next episode.
    This is a keeper!

  41. Joe…have to ask…do you know if there will be a soundtrack available for this? Joel’s music is awesome…as expected!

    Can’t wait for next week!!!!!

    SBS

  42. Joe!!! loved the premier, can’t wait for next friday’s episode. one thing is bugging me, if the kino has a remote to control it then why couldn’t they have used one to press the button that closed the shuttle door.

    Thanks for more awesome stargate

    -ZPB

  43. ooops sorry for posting twice, the first time was one my phone and i wasn’t sure it went through

  44. WOW. i’m hooked!! Watching for the 2nd time, Joe, TOOOO MANY commercials. Sheryl

  45. SGU has potential, although I admit I wasn’t blown away.

My two main observations: I hope they are able to turn on some lights at some point. I hate this trend to do everything in the dark. If more than two people are in a dark set, then I can’t see what’s going on. I understand it’s a stylistic approach, but if I can’t see what’s going on, then what’s the point?

Chloe is already bordering on obnoxious. I thought the scene about her father was wayyyy overdone. If she is going to be the contentious young person — well that’s just not interesting. When Scott asked her about her father, she really was just talking about herself. She is already my least favorite character.

  46. Amazing…loved every minute of it (minus the many, many commercials). I was excited from the start and this is beyond what I was expecting. Excellent work! Looking forward to the rest of the season and the future.

  47. Loved the first 15 minutes – all the characteristics of a major motion picture and, of course, the music was incredible.

Fell asleep in the last 15 minutes and had to watch the DVR to catch up.

Was SyFy out to get your premier? The commercials were frequent – even seeming to cut off seconds of the show – and annoying. Tough to get spooked and/or feel in jeopardy on SGU when each and every commercial break pushed Fear Factor, Ghost Hunter, etc., repeatedly. Distracting with a CAPITAL D.

You got screwed by SyFy on that one.

    PERFECT use of Michael Shanks.

Ms. Tapping was, as always, fantastic.

Which, unfortunately, highlighted the poor use of female characters in the premier. All we got to go on was how the women were depicted tonight and it wasn’t good. For a franchise that created one of the best every female characters on television/in scifi, tonight’s premier episode was 6 steps back.

So bad, in fact, that I was rooting for “Jaws” moment in the upcoming episode with the woman in the water. If the “shark” gets one, it will be an improvement.

That’s the worst – now the best.

    David Blue.

David Blue played the character of Eli to perfection.

His portrayal alone is worth coming back for another episode.

  48. I think because of the expense of the show they have to pay for them so that the reason for all those commercials i how future epi wouldn’t have so many-a-hour.

  49. First. many thanks to Mr. Blue for a great Q&A. Another lengthy and informative peek into one of the actors of SyFy’s latest flagship show.
Now, onto a quick review of the opening episode. Good performance but not a home run. Not overly enamoured of the flashback method of giving us a grip on the personalities of the characters. As noted by other posters, the commerical timing really distracted from the flow of the show, especially in the second half hour. And while it makes for good drama having the characters thrust into the “we’re almost out of air” danger, it loses a bit of its punch for having been done in a slightly different form before. The raid on the planet seems a tad contrived, and the blowing up of the whole planet just seems implausible. I know, I know, it’s sci fi. And O’Neill’s and Jackson’s appearances didn’t do anything for the show. Sam’s presence of course was appropriate given the ship used on the episode. On the plus side, the acting was everything we’ve been promised by your accolades to the cast. The special effects are solid and eye pleasing. Going back to the cast’s performance, we definitely got the atmosphere of confusion, panic, terror, and shock the characters find themselves in. All in all, I’ll give this one an 8.7. And I’ll admit my feelings about the fate of Atlantis may be coloring my perspective, but I have tried to look at Universe with as unbiased an eye as possible. So, here’s to seeing how the next few episodes unfold.

  50. Okay, my thoughts on Air (spoiler free):
    1) I LOVED the acting. It honestly could not be any more awesome. Brian Jacob Smith was particularly awesome. I think he had the toughest role to play in this episode. David Blue was also amazing, and I’ve totally fallen in love with both him and his character Eli and also with Brian. Not sure yet if I’m in love with Lt. Scott, but I think so.
    2) I DID NOT LIKE the camera movements. I like the camera to stay in one spot for a couple seconds at least so my eyes don’t have to keep refocusing. Did they shoot the whole thing handheld? It felt like it. And I’m not even that old (so no accusing me of not being in the target audience!)! I hate when shots will start off in one place and then shake back and forth. And this was for the WHOLE episode!
    3) Along those lines, I DID NOT LIKE the dark grey filter the show seems to have been shot with. Either that, or the lighting sucks. It is very moody and such, but again, my eyes had to try like sixteen times harder than they normally do just to stay focused on what was happening.
    4) To go along with 2 and 3, I LIKED that I felt like I was really there. As much as I hate the shaky camera bit, I really felt like I was there. Like I was stuck in that room, unable to see because there were no more lights, and unable to focus my eyes. (I would have loved to see the director and DP do this without making my head hurt. It IS possible to do so!) But either way, I did appreciate that feeling and will probably have dreams about being on Destiny with Eli and Lt. Scott tonight. ;-D
    5) I LOVED the writing. Not as much humour as I like, but I imagine that will improve as their situation improves. I can already see Eli becoming a source of comic relief for those stuck on Destiny, and hope he will break out the jokes even more as the show goes on. I love him! 😀

So, overall, two things I LOVED, two things I DID NOT LIKE, and one thing I LIKED. Averages out to LIKED. I guess that’s good, eh? I liked it much better than I liked Children of the Gods. But not as much as I liked Rising. And I ended up LOVING the series that both of them began. So, in conclusion, I can’t wait for next week to see where it goes form here!

  51. Oh, and I agree with everyone who’s wondering why there were 7 act breaks/hour where 4 or 5 would do? Felt like y’all were trying to build up tension where either it already existed or where it wasn’t needed. Some of them were in weird spots, too.

  52. Congrats on a fabulous new beginning – SGU! Fantastically done, compelling and the best new series since SG1 and SGA.
    All the best –
    Alice B

  53. @ t’loc FTL is not a BSG term. It has been used and continues to be used in any number of pieces of science fiction and highly speculative fact as an acronym for “faster than light”.

  54. Master Prudent: Thanks for the explanation – I had no clue what FTL meant when Rush said it. I assumed it meant that they were going back to cruising between galaxies, but have never encountered the abbreviation before in my reading or viewing.

  55. Will catch up with what looks like another great cast Q&A, but wanted to say that I loved the show from start to finish. The acting is excellent, no matter what one thinks about the characters — and of course eliciting a very particular response requires spot-on performances. Everything done so meticulously behind the scenes — everything, writing, directing, SFX, and on — shines through. Theme music = definite break from previous SG series, perfect for the show, as was all the scoring. Pitch-perfect brief (but very welcome) performances by RDA and Amanda Tapping. Can’t wait until next Friday.

Many thanks and kudos to all cast and crew.

  56. After watching the show a second time on my dvr and skipping the commercials this show was incredible. I loved it in every way. I particularly loved the beginning where you see the ship, very cool. I can’t wait till next week.

I loved the Eli abduction and the “last starfighter” homage with the game being a selection tool.

I thought the Daniel Jackson videos were hillarious. I could totally buy those videos being made and Daniel being the one in them. Made total sense and a great way to get a Michael Shanks cameo and have it not feel forced.

The Rush character is very interesting. I love the way he just does whatever he wants to do and immediately lies to justify it. The “we can’t risk dialing Earth” comment and the “I’ve spoken to O’Neill and he has placed me in command” scene. I’m looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

  57. Thanks, Joe, for both the interview with David and for your work with the premier/SGU in general. I was excited already, but now I’m pretty much stoked to see the series unfold.

  58. Okay…SPOILERS AHEAD!!

    Lemme gather my thoughts…

    1. I was disappointed by the total snub to SGA; in light of the fan disappointment over the cancellation of the show, it would have been nice to at least include one cameo from someone in that cast. Or, at the very least, make meaningful reference to the Atlantis expedition. My husband said that there was one passing mention, but I didn’t hear it, so I wouldn’t say that it was a decent nod to a show that was on the air for 5 seasons. I really feel like Cooper and Wright have flipped Atlantis the proverbial bird.

    2. The commercial breaks were horrible – really threw off the pace of the show.

    3. The sex scene was unneccessary, and off-putting. In fact, I almost stopped watching at that point. I’m married, have a good sex life, and yet I was embarrassed by it. This is exactly what I do not want to see on my tv, and I hope it doesn’t become a common feature (though the previews tend to suggest it will be). Honestly – it makes me feel manipulated, like a puppet – I can see through the whole ‘sex sells’ thing very easily, and I could certainly see through this.

Now that that’s out of the way…the positive (for the most part)…

    1. I liked most of the characters – the male characters. The females…meh – all bitches at this point, except the doc/medic…she’s okay. The kid might be okay, too…I have to see how she grows throughout the show.

    2. I like Rush – he’s slippery and deceitful and semi-long-locked. 😉 No worries, though…I’m not likely to fall for him the same way I did Todd & Co…there is just a sexy gene the Wraith have that no one else in the whole of the Stargate franchise does. Someone should try to bottle it…lol. Still, Rush appeals to me on many other levels. I don’t trust him one bit, and that’s the sort of character I tend to like, as long as he’s occasionally capable of doing good for goodness sake, despite his secretive and self-serving tendencies. Yeah – I like the character. He’ll probably die by season’s end. 🙄

    3. I adored Eli – he reminds me very much of my husband…in that geeky, enthusiastic kinda way. He’s the much-needed light in an otherwise dark show.

    4. I appreciated the Senator’s sacrifice, though I saw it coming…the obnoxious guy who does something heroic in the end…but it worked. It also now frees up his daughter to have wild monkey sex with half the crew… 🙄

    5. I like the looks of the ship (I really haven’t looked at spoilers, so everything was fairly new to me). I hope it takes them a bit more time discovering everything about this ship than it took them to explore Atlantis. And I hope they don’t fix it too quickly.

    6. So far, I haven’t found the level of emotion, etc., overdone – everything seemed appropriate considering the situation. I think the kid going off on Rush after her dad’s death was well done. As someone who reacts to stressful situations with humor (my head could be hanging off, and I’d still make a joke about it), I especially appreciated Eli’s ability to keep things light under these trying circumstances. It seemed real to me. I’m glad there is at least one person who is not miserable…yet.

    7. With the exception of the gratuitous sex scene, I like Scott’s character, though I must admit that his introduction made it hard for me to respect him. I’m still trying to get my head around the point of that…except to make horny geekboys watch in hopes they’d get a little more titillation before the show’s end. BSG used the same trick.

    8. The mess guy (still not good with the names)…I liked him, too. He’ll probably die quick as well…but I’d like to see him become something. Those are the sorts of characters I like to see ‘rise above’.

    9. Greer has possibilities, as long as he’s not always the hot head that goes off on people. I hope to see growth in this character in a positive direction…but I wouldn’t want to see him become warm and fuzzy too soon. I’d like to know more about what makes him tick…and ticked off.

    10. Overall, the show was good. I can’t fully judge the characters yet…but I really don’t have too many worries about the cast, and the actors. They all seem quite good. I think the story is a good one…though I sort of wish there was no communication possibilities with earth. I prefer the team totally cut off from everything and everyone. But that’s me…I guess for others there’s some satisfaction in knowing they can contact others in some way. I think my biggest concern is the emphasis on sex. I like sci fi for the adventure – for the camaraderie – for the action. I’ve never watched sci fi to see other people bumping uglies. Despite some of my pervy comments, my life doesn’t revolve around sex. Hell, sometimes I’ll even go five minutes without thinking about it…lol. (Okay, four and a half… 😛 ) And right now I’m seeing the sex in this show as a drawing point – to suck in male viewers.

Now – don’t get me wrong – I don’t mind sexual innuendo or references. They work better for me – leave more to my imagination. For instance, I loved the insinuation in Hellboy II of the incestuous relationship between Nuada and Nuala, but I didn’t need to see it – I found the hints far more intriguing. To me there is just something a bit too crass in showing sex, as if people can’t fill in the blanks themselves. Yeah…as you can tell, this is the biggest turnoff so far in the show for me. It makes it seem cheap and tasteless (like most of my jokes…and we know how crude and off-putting they can be!). Otherwise, the rest pretty much worked for me…so far.

  59. You know what Joe? I have read negative comments on here tonight about how the camera movements were too fast. I thought the fast movements made for a certain realism. Then I read about how there were too many commercial breaks. I say hey, you guys gotta pay the light bill to make those cameras work! Then I read negativity about how grey the show looked. I say what the hell do you expect, it’s a space show! For the last year, I have read negative comments about SGU, on how it was going to be Stargate Voyager, or another BSG. I have read how people would attack you, and Brad Wright, and RCC on how Atlantis was cancelled to make room for SGU. SG-1 and SGA will always be great shows/movies. But what you guys did with SGU, is in my opinion pure magic! Stargate Universe is a show that from the very opening scene took me in, and made me believe in good quality television once again! To that end, I say thank you. Thank all of you for working so hard on a great story, a great set, and a great cast of characters! Negative comments be damned, I’m pretty sure I couldn’t do what you guys did with this show, and I like to think of myself as a great story teller! Great job buddy! All of you, great freaking job!

  60. SGU was amazing. I used the Ample Commercial time to rejoice with my friends watching SGU across the world on MSN!

I know its not the show’s fault about the amount of ads, so I wont hold that against it. As far as this Die Hard Atlantis fan is concerned, SGU’s Pilot was better than the first 4 seasons of SG-1, and the entire “Carter season” of Atlantis – which I refer to as the stain on what was, from beginning to end, an amazing show (even tho TPTB killed off Weir & Ford).

I cant wait for more SGU! PLEASE DON’T KILL OFF GREER!

Oh and…. See to it that McKay makes a cameo at some point! And Shep… But not Teyla, and def. no more Carter for the love of Hammond!

  61. PS: When I refer to the ’emphasis on sex’, I mean in the previews, not in the brief scene presented in this show. The previews seem to be pushing a sexual theme, even if the show itself does not. That’s the whole manipulation thing I hate…having sex shoved down my throat (no pun intended) as if that’s the only reason to watch. I know you (producers/writers) don’t necessarily have any say in how previews are cut, but I can see the network is definitely using it as a selling point.

    das

  62. Joe, big time congrats to you and the SGU cast and crew. Fantastic show. Can’t wait for next week!

  63. Wow! Just …wow. Awesome! One thing I want to say off the bat …Joel Goldsmith – Holy Crap! I’ve never been one to pay much attention to music in the past but this music was completely captivating and so different from SG1 and Atlantis. It was haunting and feature film worthy and incredible in every way. I can’t say enough about how much I loved it.

I watched the premiere twice – the second time ten times more enjoyable because I didn’t have to bear with commercials. I hope that all the nay-sayers were put in their place because I loved the style of the show. The way the scenes are shot make you feel like you are there.

The humor is a lot more subtle though Mr. Blue gave me a couple of laugh out loud moments. I was fully expecting to hate Chloe’s character but she completely won me over when well, I don’t want to spoil so, during her emotional scene. It’s so easy to screw up a crying scene but she played that beautifully and had me teary-eyed.

Colonel Young – I actually love that he’s so serious. I have a feeling that there’s some history with him and TJ that I am very curious to find out more about.

Greer – The anger and the mystery and the slightly off kilter personality he displays – so different from anything in Stargate before and I love it.

Rush – The way he smiled as he looked down at everyone in chaos in the gate room said everything I needed to know about his personality. He’s obviously a bit delusional if his comments to “comfort” Chloe were anything to go on and I’m interested to see his motives in the future.

Scott – Well played, Mr. Smith. He was really all over the place in the premiere and it’s hard to find one thing to comment about him other than the fact that his character was believable from start to finish and everything was just perfect.

Camille – Didn’t see a whole bunch of her but I like that there’s finally an IOA agent that isn’t completely evil. Well, there’s Woolsey, too, but she seems like she’s got more sensitivity as well.

So, now that I’ve written a ridiculously long comment, I just wanna finish by saying again, I loved it. I hope there will be many more years to come.

  64. PSS: Camera movements. That all worked for me. I tend to get visually confused with fast camera movements, or choppy editing. So far, I see a nice balance struck here – again, it’s just enough to add that realism, but not over-done or forced. I just hope the action scenes don’t become a blur like in the Transformers or GI Joe movies – I hate when that happens (and it’s another reason I love Hellboy II – probably the last movie ever made where you can actually appreciate the choreography of the action sequences). Sorry about all the Hellboy references…can ya tell I watched it again today?? 😛

  65. Sorry to post again, but was compelled to. Finished the second screening and I love SGU even more. Caught things I totally missed in the first showing.

This is the start of a marvelous adventure and I am looking forward to every minute.

David Blue – watch out, we are after you now. As a civilian it was difficult to really get a feel for your character and role. I knew that I would like you from your past roles, but, you have your niche here. COOL!

Brian J Harris – you did not disappoint with your character and role. It was a just a bit easier to peg you because of the military role, but your character depth exceeded what I thought would unfold. COOL!

Thanks guys for doing the Q&A on Joe’s blog.

Lack of mention of others is not to imply any less excellence on their parts.

Kudos to all – cast, crew, writers, everyone.

  66. Hey Joe,

I didn’t realize that this would mean something and it did. I remember David saying he would pick and choose his questions. I don’t even remember now, what mine were. But when he said that, I knew mine would not be chosen.

No point I guess in posting this.

Just wanted you to know I loved SGU tonight.

    Best to you Joe,
    Cheryl 🙁

  67. I just finished watching the premier and I’m hooked. I like the characters. I like the way the gate works. I like the fact that it’s starting off a little darker than the previous SG shows and the sets are great, too. The photography is great and I love the FTL effects. And the kinos are very cool, especially the giant gumball dispenser (or is it a lotto ball machine?). And the theme music is amazing, especially the lonely viola/cello — it evokes memories of …. something.

    Lots of likes. 🙂

So when the cast figured out that the first scene with them basically involved them being pelted with giant Pelican cases (and fellow cast members), what was their reaction? Eli’s crate-to-the-head shot made me think “Welcome to SGU, David! … and a boot to the head” à la Monty Python. hehehehe

One other question that I hope you can answer (unless it’s a spoiler in which case, please don’t): In the scene near the end of the episode where Eli’s lying on the bench reflecting on having just watched the senator die and Rush asks him what he’s doing, there’s something on the left side of the shot from the second camera angle in the sequence that seems a bit out of place. What is the something? (It looks suspiciously like an elbow.)

Can’t wait for the next episode!

  68. Surprisingly, the actors I thought I would not like, I liked, and the one I thought would be my favorite, isn’t. I really liked David Blue. He was fantastic. The scene where he is talking to the flying camera was too funny. He has great comedic timing. All the actors seemed to deliver as promised. Rush was great. I think Lt Scott has some “growing into the role” to do.

I thought the show was visually too dark. I love to sit back and just watch a show, but I also like to SEE it. Will they be installing any more lights in future episodes?

I also think it is time to quit interjecting characters from SG1. Have some faith in your creation/writing and believe your new show is good enough to stand alone. I did not like O’Neill’s appearance, but Jackson’s training video seemed appropriate, but not necessary.

I was sometimes confused by the jumping from present to past. I had to stop and think, were are we now, and the constant commercial interuptions did not help.

Overall a visually stunning show. The actors were great. The music was great. Congratulations. It should do well.

  69. Well, now we at least know why the first episode is named Air.

Honestly, I’m doubting if Rush deserves all this mistrust. I’m reading him for now as somebody with emotional baggage who’s very adept at compartmentalizing.

That smile in the midst of chaos was creepy as all hell, however.

Loved the nod to Dakara. Anybody else catch it?

  70. @ gordon – It’s either an elbow, or a really, really pointy booby. There are other people in the room – the two are not alone – so I suspect it’s not a mistake.

    das

  71. Joe. Nice opener. Having seen all three parts, I’m interested in everyone’s reactions, but…on second “general” viewing I really enjoyed it. Heard some things I missed the first time around.

David Blue. Your Q&A bears out what we saw in the show tonight…you seem as genuine and fun as your character Eli. Truly my favorite of the SGU characters.

    Great job.

  72. Joe,
Great job on the new series. I had kept my hopes for the series at bay to avoid disappointment, I must say it didn’t disappoint.

Make sure you tell your cast and crew how much of a great job they did. And remember the people who are the harshest critics right now are the ones who already made up their minds about the series before it aired.

The set truly looks like something to behold.

  73. Sorry, just a couple more thoughts after reading some other comments.

I’m sorry Atlantis was cancelled, and a cameo would have been keen. But plenty of main cast members from SG1 were lacking, too. I can accept this by recognizing these people still have jobs and lives of their own. To assume they are all constantly together for what is in their reality just another manic Monday would be kinda silly.
Also, I thought the plot of the Atlantis movie might explain further that crew’s absence. But like I said, I don’t need some awkward nod so I know that they know Sheppard exists. That all being said, I thought the way in which SG1 characters were brought in was clever and truer to the reality of a dynamic work environment.

As for any claims for the show being to dark (literally, not figuratively), I’m thinking a ship that was built with the intention of being unmanned would not need ample lighting throughout.

  74. Not that anyone but me cares, but 20/20 had a heartbreaking show on tonight about albinism. I recorded it. Just can’t imagine… in Africa they’re killed for their skin and organs – like an animal, and in our culture they’re discriminated against because of their appearance – which, as you know – I find attractive. In real life I’ve only known people with albinism of African heritage, and so seeing the bits about what’s happening on that continent to them just sickens me. I swear – some people just need to be booted off this planet.

Anyway…just had to get that off my chest. Now back to your regularly scheduled SGU discussion.

    das

  75. Are you a fan of The Last Starfighter? I liked the nod, even if it wasn’t intentional (the problem buried in a video game!)

  76. Simply put – WOW…

This is so unique to Stargate, but I love how they have reinvented the franchise but it is STILL entrenched in Stargate mythos! I loved how they expanded the overall story in epic ways, but didn’t have to dumb down the dialogue so much that it seems like you’re talking to a 3rd grader (caugh: Atlantis). They smoothly go from point to point in the situation = AMAZING acting!

Loved the characters of Dr.Rush and Greer…. these guys are unpredictable and I love characters with intriguing pasts.

I was also blown away by Scott’s acting – this is a character that based on previews I wasn’t too excited about, but he really grabbed my attention.

Sen.Armstrong – every scene he was in was delivered spot-on. I was honestly almost in tears over his death – it was beautifully done. If they can do that naturally and for a charater we hardly knew, just imagine how powerful it will be if a character that becomes established passes away!?

The slow paced but intense story-telling was refreshing. I like action like the next person, but I didn’t find this pilot forced in any way.

I cannot wait to learn more about these people.

  77. @ dasNdanger – I watched that 20/20 show about Albinos during SGU commercial breaks, and I thought of you! and your fascination with them. It was interesting. The young girl who tired of constant teasing by other children changed her looks. I was yelling no, no, don’t change ,you are pretty just the way you are. But I must admit when she colored her hair to a soft honey brown, and darkened her eyebrows and eye lashes, she was absolutely beautiful. But anyway, I was thinking of you!

  78. Hi Joe.
I just wanted to send huge huge congratulations for the successful launch of SGU!
I can’t wait to see it myself. I live vicariously through others til it hits Australian shores!
Thank you and congratulations to everyone – the cast and crew and all those who made it happen.
    Cheers guys! 🙂

  79. Thanks for all the spoiler free thoughts on it. Shame on you, if you put spoilers in your responses and did not give fair warning. lol. Seriously.

I’ll be waiting to see it air here in Australia, but it was good to see what people thought about it.

@ytimynona your summary rocks! You covered everything.

I hope I don’t find it too dark (literally). I used to love X-Files-esque stuff, but my professors in television production broke me of that. I can’t stand bad lighting now.

The previews here look somewhat sexual, I agree. I love a little romance and sexual tension in the show. BSG was a laugh to me in that dept though as it turned into a “gee, let’s see who’s sleeping with who this week.”

It sounds like from all the comments that SGU has the perfect combination, not too much, and not too little. (seriously, someone should resolve the whole Atlantis Teyla and John thing a little better, even if it means that she has to be killed off to do so. lol). I can’t believe I said that, but I did.

And whoever said no more Carter, well I could not disagree more. I love Sam and Daniel and the fact that they’re back, even if it is just for the pilot. 🙂

I’m looking forward to seeing it, but I have to wait until next friday. Thanks to all those who posted non spoiler reviews of it (or at least warned of spoilers) because I was curious to know how good it was. It sounds great, can’t wait.

  80. I had a meeting today, and at the end, pimped SGU. Got one person (ex BSG fan) to watch. Another friend DVR’d it, so hope that helps.

I liked it. I think it will take me about 6 episodes to really get a feel for it. There were no characters that I wasn’t interested in, because I’m curious to see how their personal stories and agendas will play out.

Strangely, the only complaint I have is the music. Music is a character for me, and IMHO, it was underplayed in these first two shows. Will it be more thematic, and possibly character associated in future episodes?

I also agree with the commercial cuts. They were so abrupt and random. And honestly, pissed me off.

  81. To Joe and the entire cast and crew of SGU.

The cast, ship and the show itself look amazing. Everyone involved with the show should be very proud of this newest installment into the Stargate world!!!

Well done everyone, can’t wait till next week!!!!

  82. I really enjoyed David Blue’s Q&A — just as thorough and thoughtful as Brian J. Smith’s, but naturally with David’s own very interesting background and unique way of relating his experiences, either from way-back or with a new role and new set of friends from SGU. His mini-stories and pop-culture references made me laugh a lot, since many of them were just so familiar I couldn’t help but smile. (I mean, how many people would give props for Shawn Cassidy and “Da Doo Ron Ron”? *w* Nickelodeon is great for popcorn-and-Coke-type fun.)

More thanks in order here, to Joe for getting these goodies set up, and to David for taking time out of a busy schedule to give us a lot of groovy info.

  83. Been reading the comments here. Sounds really good, not that I doubted it. I have to wait one more week as I am in Australia. Looking foward to it.

  84. LOVED IT!!!!!!

I am SO impressed right now….not that I didn’t plan to be. This show is gonna be completely AMAZING!!!
I was worried that is was gonna be too much like BSG….but am no longer….it is too different to even be compared to BSG….

I am SO excited to watch this show…..!@!!!!!

  85. Thomas John Brown
You know what Joe? I have read negative comments on here tonight about how the camera movements were too fast. I thought the fast movements made for a certain realism. >

    Hello Mr. Mallozzi,

I echo Thomas’s comment wholeheartedly. Awesome job, the Music, Acting, Writing, Directing and whole show rocked! A thousand times….thank you!!!

Can you please find out if Joel Goldsmith will be releasing a sound track? I’d buy it as gifts for all my family and friends, it was THAT GREAT!!!

Friday nights just got good again!
    THANKS!!! Cheers,

  86. Hey! Nice nod to The Last Starfighter, that’s one of my favorite movies from my childhood (and a sequel is in the works!).

I’ve just got to say “Thank you”. That was fantastic. I’m thrilled that Stargate is safe in the hands of this cast and this team. Way to go!

One bad thing: the commercials. It was so frequent that it really upset the pacing of the whole thing, especially with the amount of quick shots. The quick shots were fine… but the commercials really detracted from the whole thing artistically. SyFy should probably know that!

  87. Hi Mr M!

Thank you to David Blue for a GREAT Q and A! I really appreciate the time and effort that David (and Brian and others) put in to answering the myriad of questions.

I have dipped my toe into Twitter and GW so as to avoid spoilers.

My sincere thanks to all who have kindly put up “spoiler free” reviews.

Roll on Tuesday and many thanks again..

    S’n’T

PS: Check your mail box in the next few days…pressie on the way!!!! Also….how is your Mom?

  88. Enjoyed, other than the gratuitous sex scene. After the whole “Children Of The Gods : They made us put in the boobies, boobies have no place in Stargate” stuff, I’m not really sure why sex now has a place in Stargate..
No matter, other than that I really enjoyed it.

Loving the style of it, much grittier and hopefully more realistic.
I’m hoping this continues to be a much more “stranded” show than Atlantis was.

Oh, and I could probably do without “The camera is inexplicably behind a giant pillar, so you only get 1/2 the picture” mode, that’s a pet-peeve!

Actually, speaking of pet-peeves, have we not got over the whole “Middle – Beginning – End” story structure format, yet? Seems a little overdone, nowadays.

But again, more peeves than hate! Still loved it!!

  89. First, thanks to David Blue for the long Q&A.

Saw SGU on SPACE. Think TPTB should get rid of the current visual look ASAP. There is a reason why you usually have really brightly lited spaceships on Scifi shows, it’s easier to take in visually. The hand hold camera view with the rapid viewpoint traverse is just annoying. Visually SGU is not as appealing as SG1 or SGA so far.

The storytelling is far too predictable with too many long ads inserts. On SPACE it gets mind numbing when they repeat the same cross-promotion ads at almost every ads break. Realise it’s SyFy doing, SPACE is using the SyFy episode cut.

SGU is not as fun to watch as SG1 or SGA. so far. Have not decide if SGU is worth following yet.

  90. Hey Joe, I have a question.

From the amount of time you’ve spent with the other PTB spinning and making creative decisions for SGU, do you think there will be more sexual scenes as blatant as the sex scene in the beginning of Air. I know pilots are known for being a little more raunchy than the average ep because they like to get all types of viewers, but do you think it’s likely that that kind of a scene will show up again? Because I don’t watch shows like that.

But other than the soap opera like sex stuff, I enjoyed what I saw.

  91. I was holding my comments until morning so I could think a little more about the show and what I liked and didn’t like. And I was too tired to think and type last night.

I’ll alternate positives and negatives just to keep things balanced.

Loved: the acting – the cast looks like they bonded with their characters from the start. I think Eli is my favorite so far: wonderful character, wonderfully acted. And I loved the T-shirt.

Rush is a close second. His character has certainly got a lot of baggage and a lot of potential. A bit of a megalomaniac, mad scientist type.

I’ll have to see about the rest of them as things go on.

  92. Random thoughts from someone who was a very tired viewer last night:

Very much enjoyed Colonel Young (can’t think of the actor’s name, sorry), looking forward to his backstory, and was interested in his relationship with TJ. Also thought David Blue did a good job as Eli…his point of view and the humor he interjects were welcome.

Definitely a departure from the first two Stargate series. I was reminded of BSG, as well as Lost in the pilot. The flashbacks were handled in such a way that I could easily follow “where” in time they were, nicely done there.

Though I saw the moment with the Senator coming, it was still very moving, and I thought Chloe’s reaction was authentic. Something about her beating on Dr. Rush was satisfying, too. Heh.

I agree with others that the commercials were quite jarring, though during the show I couldn’t figure out why. Was it the timing of the ads? Was it that Syfy was trying to go seamlessly from action to advertisement? I don’t know, but I found myself almost flinching at each break. Not sure what Syfy intended, but I’m thinking that SGU might be best viewed on DVR from now on out.

Anyhow. I will be around for part 3 of Air next week. Good job everyone, and good luck with the series!

  93. Dang. I tried to indent a paragraph and ended up posting an incomplete entry. That is extremely frustrating. To continue:

Hated: the placement and number of commercials. This is a SyFy issue, not a StarGate issue – but it interfered with my viewing. You may have a gem of a show but it was in a lousy setting last night. If that trend keeps up, I may have to record future episodes and watch them later so I can fast forward through the intrusive commercial breaks.

Liked: the setting. The ship, what we have seen of it, is living up to the still shots you shared with us. And the kinos are adorable; “gumball machine” indeed!

Disliked: the cutting back and forth between the ship and the base. Half the time, I wasn’t sure whether I was in the past or the present. For me, it just didn’t work well. But that may just be me.

Loved: The first 15 minutes, with O’Neill and Rush showing up on Eli’s doorstep looking like the Men in Black.

Disliked: The choppy editing. It seemed to be purposeful, but it is not a style that I really like much. And for me, it worked to the detriment of the show in a couple of spots. Like Lieutenant Scott’s little tryst. I’ve got nothing against a good sex scene, but this one seemed a little “tacked on”. In retrospect, it fits into the plot and character set up just fine.

Loved: the forward lounge. It has an oddly “cruise ship” feel, but it works. It is kind of an island of beauty and calm in the otherwise rather chaotic place and time.

Overall, it was enjoyable and I’ll watch it again.

  94. Joe, thanks to your intervention hubby and I settled down together to watch the show… yes, we are hooked and will be watching eagerly next week.
Hubby was pleasantly surprised by SGU (he’s not an sg1 or sga fan) although by the end he was fed up with the commercials.
Now, can you get him to clean the bathroom???

  95. So we’ve now all seen SGU.

My first comment is to echo a number of reviews I’ve read in saying that it was a bit slow. The Icarus attack kicked it up a notch, but it slowed down again after that. Of course, all the reviews say that Air III remedies this issue, so I’m willing to trust them there.

Other than that, I really liked it. I think the characters work well, and I instantly liked Eli. Young is great (and has good taste in women) and I really love the Dr. Smith vibe that Rush is giving off. I expected Shooter McGavin to last a little longer, but I’m really happy we saw a senator portrayed as someone nice rather than Kinsey-esque.

I also really hope – and given your comments over the past few weeks Joe, this is probably true – that you keep giving us lots of stuff with the secondary/tertiary characters. I’m a big continuity nut, so I like the idea of keeping track of all these additional people (especially Vanessa James… phwah…)

    Stargate 90210 this is not.

A few nice cameo’s as well. Seeing Dr. Lee was cool, Sam and Daniel had great bits. RDA looked a little… off. I dunno. Something just didn’t quite sit right about his performance. It reminded me a lot of the briefing room scenes from Endgame in Season 8, where RDA seemed to be waiting for the other characters to stop talking so he could deliver his lines and go him. It felt like he wanted to or needed to be somewhere else.

Yeah, so I guess that’s my only real criticism of the show besides it’s slowness (which will apparently stop in the next ep, so that’s cool).

  96. I just finished watching SGU again, and I loved it. Great acting by everybody, wonderful vis effects, deep characters, and the story itself kept me locked in. If it stays like this, then I think I’ve found my new favorite show. Kudos to Brad, Rob, Carl, Joe, Paul, John, and everyone else. Great job!

My only issue is with Christopher McDonald. Whenever I see him in something I instantly think of him as Shooter McGavin from Happy Gilmore.

  97. Just saw the pilot, enjoyed it, but wasn’t overly impressed. The characters didn’t really get enough time for development, but I guess that’s for other episodes.

Anyway, two things that have been bugging me:

    – 304’s are able to easily destroy Ori battlecruisers, Wraith hives, and Replicator Aurora warships, but the Hammond is forced to retreat for three puny Ha’taks? Come on… I know the 304’s have been made too powerful, but at least give some hints as to why the Ha’taks are able to beat the Hammond.

    – So the Destiny went to Pegasus after the MW and the rest of the galaxy after that, so why are the gates in Pegasus the ‘newest’? Did the ancients upgrade them after their exodus from the plague?

  98. Joe,

Congratulations!! You’ve got to be extremely proud of your work. SGU is simply beautiful! Well thought, amazingly written and kudos to all the cast! Better make sure you plan on staying in Vancouver for a while, I think SGU may be around for quite some time. I know I will be watching. Can’t wait to see next week. Definitely a different Stargate show! But so UBER COOL!

Please pass on the congrats to all of the cast and crew. Especially David Blue for answering one of my questions. (Da Doo Run Run…. LOL!)

SG-1 Fan, SGA Fan and now proud to be an SGU FAN!!!

  99. Okay Joe! I woke up this morning early to watch SGU for a second time on Hulu. I have to say that everything I said last night during my post SGU watching high, is 150,000% true! I love this show! My whole family loved this show, even my brother who was one of those “Oh this show is going to suck ass!” people. All I gotta say to those still negative people out there on Gateworld, and on here is, “GET LOST LOSERS!” SGU is here to stay for at least the next 5 seasons!

  100. Hey Joe,

I thought the SGU pilot was excellent. I don’t think the city of Atlantis rising from the ocean will be topped but it was still a great way to start off a new and different series. The characters are really dynamic and I am loving Rush and Eli right off the bat. Lt. Scott is also a great character, as well as Young. The others still need to win me over.

If you noticed on sites like GW, there is so much negativity about this show. I thought it was just GW but even on SyFy and other forums bashing the show. Are the producers concerned by upset fans on an internet forum? Did you expect this much negativity?

Anyway My fears was put to rest, the show still feels like Stargate in every way. The episode even ended Stargate style. Cannot wait for more next week!

    Best,

    Squall78

  101. Congratulations to all for the great show, Joe. The performances were every bit as good – and better – than everyone said they would be. I am eagerly waiting to see next week’s show so that I can put this first “volley” into perspective.

Loved the chaos but am looking forward to quieter moments with these characters to see what they are all really like. I need to see more scenes like the one with Rush looking down on the chaos in the ship with almost a smirk on his face. He looked like he was studying an ant farm – loved the arrogance.

And, I didn’t realize that Scott’s character was so central – great job by Brian. And, David Blue was certainly wonderful. I think the humor felt less like it fit the dark quality of the show but in reality there would be people making jokes in this type of situation just to keep some sanity. Tough balance to achieve. Luis F. – the man lives and breathes “pathos”- loved him. Have to agree with other comments about the female characters. Hoping they will be fleshed out in coming episodes. It’s obvious these actresses can really “deliver”.

I’m glad that the SG1 folks were seen but felt there was little connection. Maybe I was picking up on the differences between the style and atmosphere from their show to this one. I also have a feeling that there won’t be any clear-cut heroes in this show – in line with a more realistic feel and pretty much opposite of previous shows in the franchise.

Looking forward to next week and other upcoming episodes. The production was top-notch. I suspect after a few more episodes I’ll be really hooked.

  102. I enjoyed the show. Really liked Eli and Scott, not sure about the other characters yet…..Couldn’t get a handle on Camille, I did like the medic (sorry forgot name) and what I saw of Young……

Really hated the awkward commercial breaks, way too many and they were just awkward, seemed like cutting scenes in the middle….

It was dark, but then it has been unmanned, so as a previous poster said may not have as many lights. But would like to see it lightened a bit…

    The music was fantastic…

I agree with Das on the sex scene, it was jarring seeing it in a Stargate show, just not used to seeing it in relationship to Stargate (and I was a fan of BSG , which had frequent scenes)

Loved seeing Daniel and that was a perfect use of him…It was nice to see Carter in action….Thought the O’Neill scenes were okay..

  103. I have to say, that all last night I was thinking the same thing as Jayenkai…I thought the pilot was FABULOUS, full of all the things that make Stargate wonderful, together with all the aesthetic and dramatic qualities of a feature film. But why, why WHY did TPTB feel the need to show even a brief moment of something so UN-STARGATE. After the whole Children of the Gods “we-never-wanted-it-to-be-that-way-and-it-was-marring-the-Stargate-name” remake…(which I love and am so grateful for btw), you would THINK perhaps we could learn from that? 11 years of hindsight…never produced any foresight??
Anyways. I just wanted to voice my concerns…other than the COTG fiasco, Stargate has always been a family-friendly show with a massive family fan-base…people who sit down together with their kids to enjoy some quality sci-fi entertainment. And although I am in love with SGU from everything else I saw in the pilot, I am DISAPPOINTED that once again TPTB felt it necessary to put that sex scene in there.
    -GateGeek from Canada.

  104. Really strange, not sure how my response ended up in previous day not this one as when I hit send had been reading responses to Blue so know it was here… trying again.

But do want to add I agree the acting was GREAT.

Not going to lie… wasn’t very impressed last night with SGU. In fact very underwhelmed. The relationship stuff stale, the flipping back & forth in time distracting and of no real value, the chick practically fawning over her injured commander so sickeningly Sam/Jack it was sad, the “go because your mother needs medical care” ploy puke worthy. And the nonsense of the leaking air… for crying out loud at least SHOW them trying to simply close off that area or constructing paneling over the ship door. That they didn’t even try made it utterly ridiculous.

Does it have potential? Sure. But I see us going on and on waiting to find out the SPY who betrayed their location, the waxing on of the chick that was supposed to already been gone… Really, it will have to improve a lot for me to every get that involved. Will I watch? Sure I am a SG junkie. But I am very disappointed. Could probably right now give you 10 events that are supposed to surprise or shock us this season it is so predictable. I hope I am wrong, but last night was not promising.

The SGU forum had 67 votes C+ and below, 52 higher (49 were D+ and lower).

  105. Hello Joseph! ça va ? bien dormie?

Je suppose qu’aujourd hui votre blog ne sera pas mis à jour aussi tôt qu’hier^^! Dommage pour moi.

    Kiss, a plus tard.

  106. Hi Joe — the show was WONDERFUL (mostly). Loved it and looking forward to the rest of the season. David Blue and Robert Carlyle are awesome.

Two negatives, which have already been discussed:

The sex scene — unnecessary, gratuitous, and embarrassing. With all the hoopla about removing the nudity from Children of the Gods, to insert a scene like that is a step backwards.

The commercial breaks — jarring and completely messed up the show pacing.

  107. Thanks DB for the lengthy Q&A

I have watched SGU premiere Air 1&2 and I liked it enough to watch Air 3 next week. Most of the characters failed “gut check” so far, the exceptions being Dr Smith, er, Rush and yeah, Eli; while I found the people chaos to be understandable, I felt it as un-Stargate. Guess I got too used to military types stepping up quicker to establish some kind of order. The attention to set details is terrific, kudos to your team for that, makes me want to see more. As long as there are enough subplots brewing like now I will probably watch the season via DVR. Too bad SGU was not able to get a limited- commercial debut like other Syfy shows have gotten, I was sorry that anyone watching live had to deal with that, even I was FF way too much on DVR. But I’m not interested enough yet to buy the iTunes season.
It was great seeing SG-1 characters but, the way the opening came off, Sam on the Hammond and Walter at SGC made sense, and yeah the Dr Jackson Intro to Stargate videos (clever, I guess, how else does the newbies learn these days?) General O’Neill wasn’t needed at all. This show really did seem like starting over, that the past shows didn’t matter. All those missions, now just a bunch of reports like those that were stacked when we first met Dr Weir. I guess that’s good as a “fresh” thing, but as a fan I’m not so sure.
Oh, and the Destiny gate is weird.
    DD

  108. Joe,

To the best of my memory, I’ve never used profanity on your blog before. I’m going to end that now. HOLY FUCKING HELL!!! Now back to our regularly scheduled blog…

SGU was, in a word: Awesome. It was familiar, but different. It was everything you said it was. It was Stargate with balls. Big ones. It was gritty. It was dark. This is NOT your father’s Stargate. But I love it just the same.

The acting was out and out brilliant. The direction…brilliant. The photography…brilliant. I loved the off-angle shooting. The one shot through the railing? That caught me.

    Andy Mikita: Nice!

    The Hammond: Wow. I teared.

David Blue: I LOVE you. Heterosexually. Although everyone is the “fish out of water”, you are “us”. Just as you were touted to be.

Brian J. Smith: One of my new favorite actors. Out. Of. The. Park!

Jamil Smith: Nicely done. You’re obviously going to be the wildcard. And an Eagle’s fan by choice? You are a ballsy fella. (Just over the bridge in Jersey here. I really don’t have a choice. I have a relative in Texas who is an Eagles fan. I can’t figure him out either. :P)

    Elyse Levesque: Nice tackle!

Robert Carlyle: Wow. Just wow. I’m gong to love to hate you. Just a little bit…

SGU Staff et al: The word “WOW” keeps coming to mind, although I’ve over used it. But I’ll use it again just for the Hell of it: WOW. There. I’ve said it. It must have been a bitch to fit all of that set up into one episode. Pilots are usually shaky. This was not. Well done Indeed. (yes, I was channeling Teal’c. )

    Thank you. All of you.

  109. Shit, I almost forgot. The “Stargate Introduction Video” was fanfuckingtastic! “Hi. I’m Daniel Jackson” PRICELESS! Who thought of that? I’m buying you a beer. Well, maybe half a beer. The American dollar is in the shitter at the moment.

  110. And from the “shit, almost forgot again” file: You made an American Senator self-sacrificing. You truly are gods.

  111. And the last entry for today: I’ve thought about it. The Jackson introduction video had to be Gero. Had to be.

  112. @David Thank you that Q&A was awesome and you were a hit with all the girls last night.

@Joe You and all the others have created an awesome piece of work. Last night while we were watching we had a lot of non scifi people attending and they talked talked talked but this morning about 2am there was about 12 of us that watched again in silence and awe. What a great show this is going to be. The 12 of us are going to meet this Friday just to see what happens.

Oh and this is officially the 3rd show/movie to ever make me cry.

  113. Hi Joe, well, for me, the jury’s still out on this one. I’d like to see what develops in the next week or two. I think the show is intriguing enough to keep me interested.

What I did like: David Blue (FANTASTIC performance), the panning through the ship, the kinos and the music. Oh yeah, the explosions were great!

What I didn’t like: The endless commercials, the lighting or lack thereof (which brings me to @Thomas John Brown – WHAT LIGHT BILL?), the grey tones for everything, the going back and forth between Icarus and the ship and the jumpy camera work. Ok, I know I’m gonna get it for this one, and for sure I’ll be the only one in the bunch (gawd, I’m almost afraid to say it…), but I didn’t care for Robert Carlyle at all. I’m gonna go hide now, let me know when it’s safe to come out 🙂

By the way, read Brad Wright’s interview somewhere, and to say that the previous Stargates where “bubble gummy” is bullshit and a disservice to the writers, and worse, the fans.

We’re going to watch the whole thing on Hulu later on today, mostly because I’m curious to see if the commercials had us so pissed off it actually set us up to bitch about the above 🙂 If there is one thing I trust, it’s your ability to tell a story, so maybe it’s just a matter of time. Hell, maybe I’ll even wind up liking Rush!

  114. I subscribed to Space just so that I could watch SGU (and Sanctuary), and I’m so glad I did. I really enjoyed the show. I like the darker look-and-feel, it’s quite different from SG1. The actors did a wonderful job, and it was so great to see Rick, Amanda, and Michael again. The use of Daniel’s character was quite inspiring. Kudos to the cast, crew, and all involved.

  115. Hey Joe, did I hear some Atlantis music in there somewhere last night or was that just my imagination? It was just a few bars I thought I heard, but that could just be wishful thinking.

  116. It’s excellent to see that mostly every review out there from websites/magazines show the series in a positive light, saying It’s a great start etc.
Sure I guess you’ll have those that are still in the negative zone like with any series but really I hope the series continues for many years to come and say this time 2012(When the world apparently ends) You’re still writing and are hopefully in the helm for SGU Joe lol

  117. At first wow, thank you for this, to both David and Malozzi. I’ve also seen the pilot of Universe it was impressive 😀 So i have a question has anyone noticed what computers are used on the destiny. I mean near the end some of them had “earth” notebooks, not acient ones xD. Does some know the model of these?

  118. I wanna thank you and the cast and everyone involved in the new spinoff. This start of the new spinoff makes me hope, fore a new beginning of the Stargate saga.

    Thank you.
    Big Bear

p.s can´t wait for more foodpics from Fuel.

  119. I totally get the “GORGEOUS and incredibly sweet woman in real-life once I overcame my anxiety” about Katee. The first 2 times I met her I couldn’t even pretend to be cool. She is an absolute doll but there is such a “star” quality about her and she is just so amazingly beautiful that it is hard not to become overwhelmed when meeting her.

  120. Joe, I loved, loved, LOVED the premiere! Everyone did a superb job! Can’t wait until next week!

  121. Joe, I found inspiration from Lethal Weapon 4. People don’t have to love Startgate Universe more than Atlantis, or Sg-1. Stargate Universe is not better than the previous shows, it’s just different:) That scene always makes me tear up when I watch it!

  122. I did watch SGU parts 1&2, but I’m holding off commenting. I do have a major complaint. At what level of sound is Stargate filmed? Each time I watch an episode of SG1 or Atlantis and now SGU on television, I have to crank the volume up to a ridiculous level.

  123. I decided I’d give SGU a chance and watched the pilot. As much as I like some of the cast, I feel nothing for their relationships, and I found the script clunky and with more than a few plotholes. I also found the sex scene unnecessary (not to mention an officer and an enlisted caught having sex would both be severely disciplined). I won’t be watching any future eps.

  124. There’s too much to praise about SGU. 😀 I’ll try to make this simple.

    Loved
    – *all* the characters, especially Rush
    – the way the story was slow, and yet tense
    – The Hammond (I cried)
    – Chloe’s reaction to her father’s death (I cried again)
    – Jack, Sam and Daniel were there for a reason, didn’t take the focus from SGU cast
    – the sense of panic as peeps arrived to the Destiny (I panicked too)
    – seeing MW gate
    – cool Destiny ship
    – and MUSIC! Awesome, brilliant!

    Didn’t like
    – uhm… well… a bit more focus on the new/old stargate itself would’ve been nice. Hope to see it in future episodes.

    Long live SGU! Well done.

  125. Hi Mr. M.

Loved the premier, a few things i didn’t like(sex scene was to graphic, the could just have been kissing and then we wouldn’t have needed all that groaning and air part 1 felt to compact and air part 2 felt dragged out.) but besides that, I really liked it. What is to come excites me more than the epicness I just witnessed though. :p. 8 1/2 out of 10. 🙂 😉

    Thanks so much,
    Major D. Davis

  126. Okay. Okay, Joe. You guys have my attention – and my husband’s too. The first episode was very interesting – visually and emotionally, and very well acted. Some quick thoughts and reactions:

    – Love the opening camera shots– and the music.
    – Lt. Scott and Eli Wallace – I wonder how their friendship will develop. I see them almost as younger, innocent versions of Sheppard and McKay
    – The spinning stargate – Cool.
    – The Stargate projectile-vomiting people into the gate room – Very cool.
    – I thought that Eli might be one of my favorite characters – and I think I’m right. It will be interesting watching him mature over time. And, did you notice in his Q&A that he said he’d be interested in working alongside David Hewlett!?? Think about that as you guys are spinning Season 2.

Yes, I’ll be watching the next few episodes – if for no other reason than to find out what’s up with Rush. Don’t trust that guy. But the character has interesting levels of complexity and Carlyle is great.

  127. Congratulations to the cast and crew at the Bridge Studios, SGU’s premiere was AMAZING, I absolutely LOVED it!!! Great characters, good plot, I laughed and cried and the music was BRILLIANT!
I am very much looking forward to next week and the rest of the season. I have to admit that SGU looks better than SGA did after its first episode.. Don’t get me wrong, I liked it too but I think SGU’s got even more potential.

Congrats and Thanks SGteam!!!!!!!!! Good luck for the future!

  128. HI Joe,

Dont really like “dark” sci fi – not my thing but I wish you well with SGU. I am sure it will be a success.

I spent a whole day in Vancouver on my way to Alaska – what a beauitful place to live – you are a lucky man!

Hope you, yours and the dogs are well

    Johan

  129. I loved SGU! I found the characters intriguing and can’t wait to see what happens next.

Like some others have mentioned, the sex scene was a bit more than I’m used to from Stargate. It’s definitely no longer a family show.

Still, I think the show is fantastic and I’m looking forward to the rest of the episodes.

  130. It wasn’t just Syfy that was messing up the show with too many abrupt commercials interruptions. SPACE, here in CANADA, was quite frustrating as well. Commercial breaks were never this annoying with SG1 or ATLANTIS or with any other show for that matter. It felt like they didn’t know where the breaks were supposed to go so they just threw them in there willy nilly.

Even tho I watch it on SPACE last night, I am going to have to get it “elsewhere” so I can watch it without those annoying interruptions. Then maybe I will get the full impact of the show.

I know you don’t have any control over the ads but if you could check out the next airing on SPACE and gives us your thoughts on the commercial breaks that would be greatly appreciated. They messed up the flow and made it hard to follow the story.

I really liked Colonel Young. I am really interested in seeing just how the relationship between him and Rush is going to develop. Looks like a power struggle might be brewing.

  131. Now that I’ve mentioned several things I really like about SGU, I feel the need to mention 2 things I didn’t like so much:

The first was the sex scene. Granted, I think it was done as tactfully as a sex scene could be, but I didn’t see why it was needed. There were ways to imply the couple’s sexual involvement without it – and I found it rather jarring because this was a Stargate franchise series after all, so I wasn’t expecting it. It was almost like it was there just to show that this is not the old Stargate. Which is okay, I guess, except that the show comes on early enough that younger kids may be watching. If I had a 11-12 year old watching the episode with me, I would have been scrambling for the remote to change channels on that scene. So, for parents who may be used to watching SG and SGA with their adolescent kids, if the parents are sensitive about the TV violence and sex scenes their kids are exposed to, the new Stargate may not be their cup of tea. I’m not saying that that’s good or bad – it’s just something parents may want to know.

The second thing I didn’t like: definitely the commercials. Not something you have control over, Joe, but since I’m sure the network folks check out your blog, I just want to add my voice to those who found the commercials to be too many and badly placed. It really just encourages people like me to record the episodes and watch them later, fast-forwarding through the commercials. And that is not good for the financial viability of the show. It’s a Catch 22, but it’s something the network needs to figure out.

  132. I just finished watching Stargate Universe and all I can say is Brilliant! I have absolutely NO problems with anything I saw. The editing was brilliant. The “jumping around” that some people didn’t like didn’t bother me at all. In fact if you listen carefully the music and background sound make it easy to distinguish what “time” or “place” is on screen. The “sex” scene was perfect for establishing some character background, and traits and maybe a little drama in the future. The acting was fantastic…hands down some of the best acting I have ever seen anywhere. The story is engaging and the cameos by Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping and RDA were perfectly placed and all well done. I am hooked and SO excited that I once again have a Stargate show to watch. There are SO many questions brought up in Air I, I can’t wait to spend several seasons trying to figure out all of the answers!!

    Bravo!

  133. Hey Joe

Just to let everyone know, the time on the show was 1 hour and 27 minutes which is pretty much on par with the episode times. Generaly they come in about 43 – 44 minutes each. And yet I too felt it was over advertised.

Watched it again just now and wow, it was great all over again!! Great job Joe and pass it along to the rest of the cast and crew

  134. oh and a couple of other comments. Sometimes the music overpowered the actors words and I struggled to understand them.

and Telford? blink and you missed him. do we see him again?

  135. Hey there Joe,

Congratulations. Looking forward to the awesomeness next Friday. Had a blast with everyone on Twitter yesterday. Only found one *$@#& spoiling things. Most fans were gr8. I haven’t really read the comments above ‘cos I know someone will spoil something. It’s tough to still be involved but keep from knowing everything.

Thanks to David for a charming and thoughtful Q&A. I think I’ll keep it as 7 but it could be the 7th chevron in the 9 chevrons. Hey everyone calls me Chev anyway. It’s how I distinguish myself from all of the other Chevron7s.

Holodeck would be awesome. Could you imagine having a kino in your house? Freak you out. If it didn’t look so damn uncomfortable the Atlantis control chair would be cool in the loungeroom. I think I might take the memory zapper from MIB. That’d be fun.

    Questions for Joe:

What piece of film memorabilia would you want in your house? Working of course.

How did you spend premiere night?

Must get back to the birthday present. If I don’t get it done in time, could you please extend the celebrations?

    Cheers, Chev

  136. Overall I am very pleased by the first two parts of what is obvoiusly a much longer, if not larger story. Pretty much everything I thought was holding SG1 and SGA back over the years (not trolling, just personal preference) is gone. The things that made me like SG1 and SGA, overarching stories and characters, is still there and much more developed. Everything else will probably develop over time, much like SG1 and other shows (BSG and Lost have been mentioned) weren’t exaclty presenting everything they became in the first 2 hours either.

Question: Two scenes made me laugh out loud. One was the comment of Eli saying he though the Gate was awesome, and the response being something down the line of “it”s funny how fast you take something like that for granted.” The other one was Eli commenting about acencion “whoa, that wasn”t in the video” and Rush responding “there is more than one video.”

I assume those were intended comments about the other two shows?

  137. Saw the show last night. I’m not sure what to think, since one thing I LOVE about SG1 and SGA is how the characters can trust each other. I understand what you’re doing and why you’re doing it, but I’m going to miss that.

I do wish they had tried to push the button using one of the floating spheres, or something smaller taped to the bottom of one of the floating spheres. It seemed like such an obvious solution that I was just about shouting at the screen.

  138. Saw the show Friday night (Started watching 45 min after it technically “aired” so I could skip the commercials – thanks TiVo!). Long-time Stargate fan, I remember getting Dad to order Showtime just so I could watch SG-1 when it first came out…

Still not sure what to think about Universe… And here’s why:

Once Rush contacted SGC using the long-range communication stones, why didn’t SGC just get their spatial coordinates, assemble McKay, Zelenka and some other Scientists, take Atlantis into orbit, then use the “Wormhole Drive” that conveniently allowed Atlantis to get from “just outside the outer edge of the Milky Way Galaxy” to Earth in a few seconds at the end of “Enemy at the Gate” to go to the location of the Destiny and send a few Jumpers over to get the crew? I mean, I realize that wouldn’t exactly get you very far into your first season before “problem solved, we’re going home!” happened, and that doesn’t make for good television, but you guys said you were trying to appeal both to new and EXISTING Stargate fans, and to be perfectly honest, you introduced the solution to the problem that the Destiny crew is facing at the end of the last season of your last show… And give NO logical explanation as to why this solution (which fits right into previously introduced “Stargate Lore and Mythology”) cannot be used. At least having someone bring it up then coming up with some rational reason that the location in space could not be determined with enough accuracy or something seems necessary.

Also, I am quite sure that Rush said that the Destiny was traveling “faster than light-speed” and “not in hyperspace” which not only defies Einstein’s Relativity and Special Relativity, but also defies all previous Stargate Lore. Example: the Ancient warship with crew in stasis that was encountered by the Daedalus between the Milky Way and Pegasus was traveling at “.999 the speed of light” according to McKay “because faster than light speed is impossible without hyperspace.”

I did like Eli’s character, and Dr. Rush’s as well… I hope that the IOA lady gets killed in some episode, just because I already got a bad vibe from her arrogant character, and I like the noble way that the Congressman goes out. I could see myself getting into it… I just hope I’m not constantly distracted and insulted by holes in the story that suggest that the viewers are too dumb to see them. Especially when those holes are this big.

Sorry to be so harsh, but you are the one who says you like constructive criticism…

    HUGE Fan,
    Richard Watts

  139. I too would like to see David Blue’s character Eli “get attention from the ladies.” Stargate is supposed to be about breaking barriers and pushing boundaries (as well as good sci-fi) – how about it? Blue is a gorgeous man and shouldn’t get pigeonholed into “comic relief.”

  140. I watched SG-1 and SGA with my hubby and loved them! We have the Stargate movies as well.

So, both of us want to know when the real Ba’al is going to show up in SGU.

In Continuum when Ba’al was shot and killed, he did the whole vanish thing like Vala. Upon trying to leave the planet, Mitch stumbled when his ancestor was being harmed. Everyone did not just vanish, but as their ancestor died.

I have come to believe that because Ba’al vanished in thin air after he died that it was because the clones were killed or never made in the past. So, we are left with the Ba’al that was killed at the beginning of Continuum was a clone.

When will we see the real Ba’al in SGU…since he must have went far away with “some of his good friends”. Thanks
