The Mastermind Mark Savela

Hurray! Today, I received my $100 Climate Action Dividend from the government of British Columbia. According to the document that accompanied the check: “…this year’s Provincial budget is making it easier for British Columbians to choose a lower carbon lifestyle.” I suppose, for instance, the $100 could be put toward the purchase of a scooter or a hand lantern or one of those pedal-powered generators that the Professor built on Gilligan’s Island. As most of you know, I incorporated some major lifestyle changes last year to help reduce my carbon footprint (read all about them here: http://josephmallozzi.com/2007/07/07/july-7-2007/) so the prospect of having this extra one hundred dollars to spend on my green initiative is heartening. Of course, technically, it’s not really an extra $100. I mean, the government would like us to think it is and their use of the term “revenue neutral” to describe their new carbon tax would imply that, at the very least, we’d break even in the long run. And maybe if I didn’t partake in lavish excesses like driving a car or heating my home, I would break even. But, sadly, because of my unstinted addiction to things like food and water (which, incidentally, is trucked in to supermarkets by companies that will be hit with this new gas tax and inevitably pass the cost on to consumers), it looks like the government’s grand gesture will mean very little to me in the long run. Still, $100 is $100. I could use the money to create a new state-of-the-art compost heap. Or, follow Fondy’s suggestion and use it to purchase one hundred dollars worth of gas to fill my SUV which I would leave idling through most of Friday. I’m inclined to go with the latter.

Hey, a great response to yesterday’s announcement that actress Janina Gavankar (aka Dusty from the upcoming Stargate: Atlantis episode “Whispers”) will be swinging by to chat with us. I’m going to continue gathering questions until Friday night at which point I will send them Janina’s way and, hopefully, receive a response from her some time this weekend. Also, on the same topic…

I thought it might be fun to profile various of the behind-the-scenes players on Stargate: Atlantis by having them follow Janina’s lead. So, in the coming weeks, you’ll be able to query the likes of Visual Effects Supervisor Mark Savela, writer-producer Alan McCullough, and Production Designer James Robbins. It’ll be a real a real treat for a) those interested in television production and Stargate: Atlantis and b) a lazy blogger looking to fob off an entry on some poor unsuspecting soul. I’ll keep you posted on upcoming guests.

Speaking of which – Kage Baker will be answering your questions this coming week! Finish up In the Garden of Iden so that you can weigh in with your opinion once discussion begins. Then move on to K.J. Bishop’s The Etched City because K.J. will be joining us the following week. Then motor right into Jennifer Pelland’s Unwelcome Bodies as Jennifer will be joining us the week after that. It’s all there in the right sidebar, folk, so don’t say I didn’t warn you.

As for next month’s BOTMC selections… Well, let’s face it. It’s not really a Book of the Month Club. It’s more of a Book of the Month and a Half Club as I want to give participants time to read all three books if they so choose. And, if you’re looking to get a jump on August’s picks, here ya go.

In the SF category, it’ll be Lois McMaster Bujold’s Cordelia’s Honor. Now this is an omnibus made up of two novels, Shards of Honor and Barrayar, so you have a choice of reading one or both.

From the publisher: “In her first trial by fire, Cordelia Naismith captained a throwaway ship of the Betan Expeditionary Force on a mission to destroy an enemy armada. Discovering deception within deception, treachery within treachery, she was forced into a separate peace with her chief opponent, Lord Aral Vorkosigan—he who was called “The Butcher of Komarr”—and would consequently become an outcast on her own planet and the Lady Vorkosigan on his.

Sick of combat and betrayal, she was ready to settle down to a quiet life, interrupted only by the occasional ceremonial appearances required of the Lady Vorkosigan. But when the Emperor died, Aral became guardian of the infant heir to the imperial throne of Barrayar—and the target of high-tech assassins in a dynastic civil war that was reminscent of Earth’s Middle Ages, but fought with up-to-the-minute biowar technology. Neither Aral nor Cordelia guessed the part that their cell-damaged unborn would play in Barrayari’s bloody legacy.”

Discussion on Cordelia’s Honor begins August 11th.

In the FANTASY category, it’ll be Catherynne M. Valente’s The Orphan’s Tales: In the Night Garden.

From Publisher’s Weekly: “A lonely girl with a dark tattoo across her eyelids made up of words spelling out countless tales unfolds a fabulous, recursive Arabian Nights-style narrative of stories within stories in this first of a new fantasy series from Valente (The Grass-Cutting Sword). The fantastic tales involve creation myths, shape-changing creatures, true love sought and thwarted, theorems of princely behavior, patricide, sea monsters, kindness and cruelty. As a sainted priestess explains, stories “are like prayers. It does not matter when you begin, or when you end, only that you bend a knee and say the words,” and this volume does not so much arrive at a conclusion but stops abruptly, leaving room for endless sequels. Each descriptive phrase and story blossoms into another, creating a lush, hallucinogenic effect.”

Discussion on The Orphan’s Tales: In the Night Garden begins August 18th

..

And, finally, in the HORROR category, it’ll be Stephen Dobyns’ The Church of Dead Girls.

From Library Journal: “Despite the lurid title, Dobyns’s latest novel (he is a poet and author of the “Saratoga” mystery series) is a compelling mystery that shows how the people in a small town change because of a series of murders. First, a promiscuous woman is murdered. Then three girls disappear in succession. The narrator reports how the symptoms of fear escalate into a raging disease consuming the community. Cloaking prejudice and fear with righteousness, certain citizens target individuals who are on the community’s fringe. By the story’s end, no one escapes suspicion. Many characters and the complexities of human interactions receive well-rounded treatment. This absorbing tale, fit for any general collection, is highly recommended.”

Discussion on The Church of Dead Girls begins August 25th

I was at The Bridge today to preview some of the Whispers visual effects shots with Mark Savela. While there, I made a point of snapping some pics of the VFX gang still hard at work (and eating the occasional salad). Check out their quaint red brick dwelling. Probably the last place you want to be when the big one hits, but charming nevertheless.

  1. There must be some mistake! You have chosen a boo/books already in my collection, i.e. Bujold’s Vorkosigan novels. I’ll enjoy the reread though. For future consideration in the fantasy catagory, have you read David Gemmel’s Legend? For me it’s one of the finest examples of “last stand” military type stories, with a fairly light fantasy touch.
A couple of questions for Ms. Javankar. First, if you were to have a chance to be world famous in any one field of endeavor, including but not limited to your work as a musician and actress, what would it be? What moved you from music into acting, and have you considered or done live theater? Do you have any future engagements in the near future, and if so, what might they be? How was your experience on the Stargate set? What did you think of the um, debonair gentleman running around backstage taking photographs of everyone? Many thanks for your participation here, and to Mr. Mallozzi fo hosting. And apologies for not being able to count to two…

  2. Those visual effects folks look like they are ready for any weather, or is it cold in their brick building? coats and blankets.. and shorts. ready for anything!!
Ummm, what is jackass Wednesday? and such a nice name for the dept. catchy!!
Yeah, down here in the states, we got “stimulus checks” hoping we will spend them to stimulate the economy,,hmmm. a bit more than 100, but not by much. and you had to file a tax return to get this free money,,, still sounds fishy, but real.
Question for Janina, What made you choose acting?, What is the hardest/easiest part about being in front of the camera? thanks in advance..
    😀

  3. Yeah, no kidding, that brick building looks like it would fall down if someone leaned against it. And it passed inspection?

So, not the R&J fan are ‘ya Joe? Well, that’s okay because we still have sci-fi and SGA in common.

I am reading Robert Silverberg’s, At Winter’s End: The New Springtime. And I am a Huge fan of Man in the Maze.

What say you? Silverberg on your author lists?

    Cheers!

  4. $100 won’t even buy you a decent bicycle. Not even in Canada.

How’s the Shrine of our Lady of NiCad going? I keep getting prepaid envelopes to send in old batteries, apparently it helps the troops somehow. I don’t suppose that’s quite as popular outside the US, hmmm?

I had frijoles for lunch, may I say I contributed mightily to the emission of greenhouse gases this day. No? I may not? Okay, alrighty then, I won’t.

I eat cows. Cows are stupid animals and deserve to die. If we didn’t eat them, the coyotes and mountain lions would. My friend Desi has two calves up on the ranch; they are named T-Bone Junior and Sir Loin. She will sell one and a half and keep the other half in our freezer. Her uncle also has a half a cow reserved for us come fall. Not Black Angus, but grassfed Jersey, good enough … roping calves lead shortened lives. yum yum yum.

  5. Joe, I can’t tell you how excited I am about your idea for q&a’s with crew from Stargate:Atlantis. Just the other day I was talking to my sister about how I’d like to hear more from them (because the few episode commentaries are never enough). Thanks for thinking of it!

Well, I’ll be reading one of the three BOTM(and a Half)C books this time around, but I’ll try and get a head start on the next lot. At the moment I’m enjoying The Etched City, and I’m very glad K.J. Bishop will be dropping by because I already have a lot of questions.

Speaking of questions, one for you Joe. I’m currently making my way through the anime works of Satoshi Kon, I was wondering if you could recommend any other anime?

    Thanks,

    Amy/Amz

  6. James Robbins guest blogger – Makes note to check Joe’s blog everyday for announcement of James guest blog day – Don’t want to miss that day.

Thank you for featuring the folks behind the camera.

  7. I was dashing around the halls trying to find a sergeant (they hide from me, I swear!), when one of the secretaries waved me into her office. She proposed a chocolate swap: my cherry-chili chocolate for some kind of dark-chocolate-cinnamon-chili goodies she has. It turns out she has read your blog! She’s a foodie, not so much a scifi fan, but we can work on that.

  8. I suppose if I got a $100 check I’d use it to put gas in the car since I’m now paying 4 times the amount to fill the tank as I did when I bought the car.

Hmm, you could always buy worms, start up your own compost farm 🙂

  9. Thanks for the pics (I don’t always post my thanks but I appreciate all the pics, vids and tidbits you post every day). Had a good laugh at the bulletin board. 😀

I can’t tell you how thrilled I am about the Q&A with the SGA crew. Thanks so much, to you and to all those who volunteered.

I don’t want to sound greedy, but is there any chance Martin gero can post a Q&A or a breakdown of Search & Rescue once it airs? Both things would be great but maybe he doesn’t have time for that. 🙁 Since he did a Q&A for BAMSR last January, I thought it didn’t hurt to ask 😀

  10. who was responsible for the season 5 pictures.
I know i don’t know the first thing about photo shop but i have seen fans do there only pictures and they look a lot better than what you/MGM OR SCFI have put out.
If for what ever reason you can’t get the cast to stay still long enough to take a picture may be you could do a compertision for the fans to desingn there own if we get a season 6?

  11. Sorry about the bad spelling i hit comment button when i went to get my dictionary.

  12. Hey great idea Joe about the guest bloggers. I was about to start some serious google-stalking to find some blogs of other folks who work there on SGA. Look forward to hearing from them.

Any chance of hearing from your network admin/tech support persons or whoever keeps the atlantis laptops charged?

They might have some funny pebkac moments to share..

  13. ‘The Church of Dead Girls’ sounds like my kind of book. I’ll have to check it out on Amazon tomorrow.

The brick building looks like the old firehouse we have in town. They were afraid it would fall over every time they opened one of the garage doors. Luckily, they have a new, more soundly built building.

  14. Nice to see the Save Carson campaign was memorable. Not quite as memorable as Jackass Wednesday, but hey, what is?

  15. Thanks Joe for making your blog more like an education centre – but it’s actually fun.

I have Cordelia’s Honor so will be able to read that selection but will be away during the discussion week. I’ll still read it anyway and look forward to reading everyone’s thoughts when I get back.

  16. That’s quite a list of guest bloggers. Soon we’ll all be able to produce our own scifi series.

Quick question, When would you suggest posting our BOTM comments and questions? I’ve got it saved on my computer, but I don’t want it to get lost in all the questions for Janina.

    Thanks a bunch!!!!

  17. Question for Janina: Will you tell us something about Joe Mallozzi that we don’t already know?

  18. Waffle-headed Monkey Trumpets? Jackass Wednesday??

What are they DOING over there???

    😀

    BoomerGoodheart

  19. I gotta say, compared to other Waffle-headed Monkey trumpets, they are certainly one of the most talented.

And indeed, I have to echo the others; thank you so much for giving us these “guest blogs”! The authors’ were enlightening, but for those who don’t have the time to join the book club, having Stargate people also guest blogging is a definite treat! I gotta think of some questions for them.

Meanwhile, here’s the one I had for you, Joe, from yesterday:

Did you guys send out episode screeners like Search and Rescue during and before Season 3 of Atlantis? If so, why didn’t they leak, do you think? If not, why did you guys start at the beginning of Season 4?

I can’t think of a good question for Janina though (I think I’ll need to watch Whispers first; I’d most likely ask her about her various acting choices in the episode), so I’ll just say that I am very grateful that she’s taking the time off to interact with the fans…and hope that we at Gateworld didn’t offend her too badly after she made her brief appearence in one of the threads. Heh…

  20. Hey Joe!

I just absolutely have to ask this. In picture three (the one with the waffle-headed monkey trumpets paper, lol), there is an image of a hardcore action Jack O’Neill with various other Stargate related-imagery around him. Can we have a full view of that picture please? That looks absolutely amazing, and what’s the story behind it? 😀

Also, I have a question for the visual effects crew. When creating a new ship for the series, what is the process in which it is created? IE – How is the design figured out, is a consensus to the design required, do interior sets come into play?

    Thanks again!

    – Enzo Aquarius

  21. Ah if you are doing a spot on ex Stargate water bearers, wither Tichenor? 🙂

  22. Thank God you are not a brainwashed minion of the Oriviramentalists. I had my doubts. (Tv writer and all, but I’m unfortunately conditioned by my over-exposure to southern Califorhysteria, so forgive me).

Sorry not to participate in the BOTM this summer. I’ve made a list of the titles so I can peruse them later, but this is my festival season (retired, supplementary income, hobbies, etc).

Looking forward to Season Five, only two weeks away (hooray).

  23. *waves* So, won’t be leaving a long comment as I should be at home packing instead I’m being the epitome of chic, and sitting at the laundromat surfing the web, and watching Atlantis.

  24. Hi Joe,

Like the pic’s of the crew hard at work!
    Ooohh! Guest bloggers that’s cool!

    Waffle headed monkey trumpets???

    Save Carson! Yeah! Like it!

    Take care & happiness always!

    Cathie

  25. Joe,

Can we make requests of others to have a chance for guest blogs to see if any of them would be interested?

    1. Wray and Scott of the special fx department

    2. Evil Kenny of Props

    3. Costume Department

    4. Krista in Playback

Would be fascinating to hear about their jobs.

    Cheers!

  26. Hey Joe.

Now, before I start, don’t be mad! I watched Search & Rescue tonight on YouTube…I figured I wouldn’t ruin it for myself seeing as it doesn’t air in Canada at all. So, here is what I thought (with hopefully no spoilers):

First off, the camera angles (i.e. the first shot of Atlantis and the planets in the teaser) were AWESOME! That really gave the episode a cool edge.

I think S&R is probably the best season opener to date of SGA…the way it was shot made it unique to other episodes.

Finally, I liked what you guys did with the very last scene. Specifically, the last minute or so, that was handled very well.

Also, for everyone reading this, at about 2 mins. into the episode there is a really quick surprise…it’sonly 5secs or so, but it made the episode 10x better…Joe, I’m sure you know what part I’m referring to.

Thats what I thought of S&R.

    My question(s) today are…

    1) Since SGA is filmed in Canada, why doesn’t it air in Canada (on Space Channel or something) like it does in the States?

    2) Why is the leader of Atlantis always American? Why not Canadian or British?

    3) In regards to S&R, when you are writing any perticular episode do you invision how you want the camera to be angled? Do you write in the script if you want to swerve down from the ceiling, or go through a window, etc.?

Thanks Joe. Also, when can we start submitting questions for upcoming guest bloggers?

  27. Doing a happy dance over the choosing of Cordelia’s Honor for BOTMC. The first book of the two, Shards of Honor, is one of my favorite books of all time and the second, Barrayar, is also terrific.

I second the request to have Martin G. do a Q&A after the season premiere if at all possible. If not then after the mid-season 2 parter, please.

  28. TV production!
    Can you repeat the question!
    I’m real excited!

Now I’ve got to get to really thinking. My goal in life is to get involved in television or movie production. Rather, I’d like to write. Real bad.

I’m going to Watkins College soon and any advice whatsoever would be ever so graciously accepted.

Alan McCullough is my man on this one. Oh, have I got questions for you, mister!

Q1. What jobs did you have before you were officially employable as a writer? What did you do up until you finally got your first gig in a production company?

Q2. What was your entrance into writing for television? Was your focus originally on writing or producing and which did you pursue? (I s’ppose those are two questions, aren’t there?)

Q3. How do your past goals compare to your current accomplishments. What are your future goals and how will you continue to pursue them?

Q4. I’ve heard many times that it’s the people you know who can do the most in helping you get a gig or a job. How does one get to know these “people?” Through what channels does one usually find the “people” they need to know?

Q5. What is the purpose of a writing crew? What exactly do they do and how does one get involved in a writing crew?

Q6. What specifically do you do as a writer/producer? What’s a normal day in the life of Mr. McCullough?

Q7. I’ve spent some time in a broadcasting writing class learning a bit of television formatting for scripts. When it comes down to it what’s the most important thing to remember when formatting a television script? What parts of formatting are most valued and are there any specifics to the formatting process that can be overlooked when writing? How do movie scripts and television scripts differ in format, initially and ultimately? How many questions am allowed to answer in one question field? How long can this multiple question question really last?

Okay. That’s all I have for now. Don’t worry. I’ll be back.

  29. Oh, I am really looking forward to all the guest appearances. I love knowing the background, so I think those will be great discussions.

BOTM books sound interesting! And since I’ve already read Shards of Honour, my reading is cut down a bit (leaving room for more books, of course).

PS: Your $100 refund/credit/whatever sounds very much like the Bush stimulus plans. It doesn’t really go far enough to be useful–or “stimulating”. I say spend it on dinner.

    A couple questions for Janina:

    1. What kind of techniques do you use to get into your character? Method acting, etc.

    2. What was your favorite scene to shoot during Whispers?

    3. Did you enjoy being part of the new all-female team of Atlantis? What was it like to work with the other actresses?

    4. Did you watch the show before auditioning? If so (or not) what are some of your reactions to the new team in the Stargate Atlantis universe?

    5. Is sci-fi something you’ve wanted to do as an actress? Do you read or watch sci-fi in your daily life?

  30. Ah my favourite soap-box subject! So what is everybody paying for gas right now? inquiring minds need to know. Ours is currently £1.32/litre which equates to roughly two arms and up to the left knee a gallon and our government ain’t giving anything away, in fact they’re putting it all up again, we’re being taxed out of existence guys. f’rinstance did you know that out of that £1.32/litre about 70pence of it is bloody tax and the SOB is putting THAT up by another 2p in October!

*Salutes as the good ship Great Britain sinks slowly with all hands*

  31. Okay now that I have returned home, and actually have enough time to really read your entry AND pack I have my questions 😆

For Janina- what was the WORST part about having to work on the set? (i.e. the fog, the trees, or the wild camera wielding maniac who wanders the set) 😀

For you- When’s Lulu’s birthday(its coming up soon isn’t it?)

Well now I’m off for my last night of peaceful rest before my ‘vacation'(can it really be called that when I’ll spend Saturday at a boring conference, and Sunday driving home?)

  32. Question for Janina:

Did you have lots of stunts to do on “Whispers”? If so, what was your favorite and most interesting? Thanks for stopping by to answer questions!

  33. ‘Dept. of Waffle-headed Monkey Trumpets’ Boosting their egos, are they?

shiningwit: *Salutes as the good ship Great Britain sinks slowly with all hands*

Right there with you. I don’t own a car myself, but my parents and my Stepdad both own cars and it’s horrendous to even look at the price of petrol/diesel in this country anymore. Why, why, why, are our government so tax crazy????

Currently trying to think of an original question for Janina Gavankar and not having much luck. But I have till the end of the day, right? *Grins* Yeah, going now.

  34. Greetings again Mr M from windswept Tipperary!

Great idea re: Guests doing the blog!!

Firstly: A question for Ms Gavankar!
Dear Ms Gavankar, greetings and welcome to the REAL Stargate Atlantis Hangout! My simple question (perhaps already posed) is this: How much Stargate : Atlantis or SG1 had you been aware of before the gig of “Dusty” Mehra? Are you a fan? If you could choose any role within the franchise, past/present/future (including guest villains etc) what would it be? And finally, are you a fan of FUEL restaurant? What a great place eh?

Many thanks for taking the time to talk to us fans! Looking forward to seeing Whispers!

    Best wishes

    Shirt’n’Tie

  35. Hooray! Lois McMaster Bujold is one of my favorites! And it’s nice to have an excuse to reread Cordelia’s Honor. It’s been a while.

  36. Hi, Joe!

Oh, sugar, I forgot to mention this:

In an upcoming issue of the print US TV Guide, they are having an “Ultimate Sci-Fi Preview!”: From Smallville to Stargate and beyond, we’ve got the inside word on all your Sci-Fi faves. Plus: on the set of the new “X-Files” movie!

    🙂

  37. { b} @ DAVID!!! {/b}

Hi. Atlantis does in fact air in CANADA. I am from the EAST COAST and have been watching it for the past four seasons on THE MOVIE NETWORK. I believe it is on THE MOVIE CHANNEL out WEST.

Season Five will be premiering on July 14, 2008!!!!!!!

    http://www.themovienetwork.ca/azlisting/?listing=s

The unfortunate thing is that you have to pay extra for this channel. I am grateful that I can afford it.

SPACE has just recently finished airing Season 3. If they wait as long as they did at the end of S2, it will be Jan., 2009 before they air S4. I have given up trying to make sense of that station.

Thanks Joes for the heads up on the next BOTM. Hopefully I will have better luck this time. : )

  38. Damn Joe! Get those poor people in VFX some insulation! It looks like it might be friggin cold in there during winter!

  39. Changed my name to Rebecca T because I noticed there was another commenter with the name Rebecca (H) (Rebecca is a popular name, no?)

Thought of a question for Janina Gavankar — actually, to be fair, my sister suggested it thinking I wouldn’t ask, so technically it’s her question, just the wording has been changed a little:

“Did you get to touch the Stargate?”

    =D

Also been talking about the whole petrol/tax/saving money/reducing carbon footprint thing to my family and they have some tips. If you would like them, then give me a yell.

  40. Hey Joe!

I missed yesterday’s blog and have no time to read it yet.

Jeremy and I are celebrating 15 years of wedded bliss. And the funny thing is, it seems like two maybe three years. I refuse to believe that I’m not still 15 myself. 😉 Weird that I’ve been married that long.

We’re at a nice hotel on the beach in St. Pete, Florida. A good place to *get away from it all*.

And now I have to go because Jeremy is out of the shower and will likely throw the laptop out ONTO the beach if I stay on it. 😮

OH! I say, spend the $100 on the SUV and let it sit idle. That’s the best way to have a large carbon foot print. Oh wait. The Canadian gov’t wants you to have a SMALLER carbon footprint…

    Trish 😀

  41. Joe, so I am 1/2 way thru Androids Dream. Still loving it. I was looking at reading Old Man’s War next since I like his other book so much. Is it written in the same style. I like the way he doesn’t slap you in the face with the sci-fi. Its like its an after thought or just part of the background. I haven’t heard you mention The Ghost Bridges did you read it and did you like it? I know your discussing and reading other books, but I would like your opinion. Thanks for your time.

  42. Hi Janina,

What was it that drew you to your character Dusty? Did you draw on anything in your life to put into the character to make her more easily for people to relate to and understand? Where there anything particular about working on Atlantis that you really enjoyed as opposed to other shows that you worked on.

    Thanks,

    Andrew Chen

  43. Not a happy bunny, just had a 4×4 hit the car I was driving. What possesses people to purchase these things when they live in areas where the roads are mostly single track eludes me other than the fact that it can cover a multitude of driving sins when wielding one. So a little more expense getting it fixed because quite frankly it just wasn’t worth the insurance hassle. I’m going to stick with walking from now on!

  44. Hi Joe,

Just happened to see Continuum, it is entirely awesome.

Tell the higher ups to bring more on!

  45. shiningwit wrote on June 26, 2008 at 10:06 pm

Ah my favourite soap-box subject! So what is everybody paying for gas right now?

Yesterday the gas price was 1.54 Euro (Augsburg/Germany). 🙁

  46. Ohmy, thanks for posting pics of that bulletin board; “Dept. of Waffle-headed Monkey Trumpets” Amazing, plus, is that a Save Carson poster I spy? Beautiful.

Running a bit late on the Garden of Iden- when should we ought to have comments in by?

And by the way, how much is gas going for in your area? People complain about it here, but comparatively, they’re just a bunch of whiners. “I want to ride my bycicle” comes to mind with driving becoming more difficult…

  47. Good New my library has books by Lois McMaster Bujold that I can actually check out, Bad news they don’t have that particular novel. This is so frustrating!!!!

More good news, The library just sent me an email saying it has Scalzi’s Ghost Brigade available for me to pick up. So my next three books to read are:

The Last Light of Sun by Guy Gavrial Kay

Use of Weapons by Iain Banks

    Ghost Brigade by John Scalzi

    Have a great weekend, Joe.

  48. Alright Joseph, here’s my question for Janina Gavankar–(I’ve thought and thought, and wrote and wrote about what I wanted to ask so here it is. Thanks).

    Ms. Gavankar:

I really appreciate you taking time out of your hectic schedule to spend a few minutes here with us at JM’s blog. Thank-you, thank you very much in advance for this.
Okay, I feel obligated to ask “the question” that most actresses will be at some point faced with in their career—beyond financial need, why do you use your sexuality as currency? This is a bold statement, but one I often ask actresses, especially those I know personally because it is an elephant in the living room issue often wrestled with. Personally, I wrestle with it because I love and at times feel ambivalent about film and actors. I have a good acquaintance friend who was recently in a successful film by a Canadian Director—two thirds of the film she spent in sex scenes. She hasn’t had much work since though she did acquired a slew of references as a result. In any event, she is one of the most affable people I have met in a long while. So, when I had the opportunity I asked her the same question, we had a wonderful ensuing discussion. Why would someone who can clearly act, and has such a charming personality feel she needs to bare her mammaries (and her nether regions for that matter) to find serious acting work—I asked her “do you fear being exploited–or at the very least being considered only in this manner?” I am a visual arts major (as well as an English major for those who know me), so nudity has always been a part of my artistic ethos, the nude human body is beautiful. However, I do take issue with “nakedness” and the intent to almost “basify” the audience.
Let me clarify, clearly in this country consenting adults choose to do this. However, if you are a young woman who loves the field of drama, but does not want to use her body to titillate (I’m not talking about using one’s sexuality—everyone does this to varying degrees), why must she in order to be taken seriously? (it definitely seems this is the case in the culture of film right now.) The overarching concern I have is, if an actress does not feel comfortable with the “degree to which” she is asked by casting agents to “boob out” why does this limit her job opportunities. Also, think of the impact this has on the significant others in that actresses life—Personally, I would never be romantically linked with someone who chose to do a sex scene, no matter how many times I hear that it is “unsexy”—you are still engaging in specific acts with someone else who is not your main “squeeze”. Anyhow, I know these are heavy weight questions—people who know me, know I have never been considered “shy”. Thanks again, and good luck with the show—it is a fabulous one at that.

    WK 🙂

  49. It’s freezing, it’s raining and seeing as it is almost 9pm here I believe it is time for bed.

    Question for Janina:
What time does her day usually start, and end?

Oh, and Shiningwit (AKA crash test dummy) here in South Africa motorists are now paying between R9.81 and R9.96 a litre, depending on the grade of petrol.

The fun part is this – if you convert the South African Rand into Pounds we pay 62 pence a litre!

    1 Pound = 15.7212 South African Rand
    $1 Canadian = 7.80 South African Rand
    $1 US = 7.88 South African Rand

Or putting it another way, a Big Mac meal costs US$3 or just one Pound.

  50. was sent on a snipe hunt for the BOTM club selections thanks to B&N’s stupid website…I guess I will just have to order them via Amazon…even getting them from Powells seems to be a defeat

  51. Joe, you are a private eco-warrior. Super! I recently read a Toronto Star article about private individuals’ efforts to conserve the planet. This isn’t doing much when two-thirds of city’s waste (I suspect this is the case with most North American cities) is produced by businesses. So, although you fulfill your citizen responsibility, does MGM or Stargate? Do all those lovely sets soon see the landfills of Vancouver when a season is over, and are all those lovely long black wraith jackets destined to rot along side? 😉 just curious. 🙂

  52. Hi Joe,
How odd…today I got my stimulant check from George…although I must say I believe I faired better than you. The blogging is new to me and I posted on the “About” page a question or two…but I’m not sure that page gets looked at. I’m looking foward to traveling to Vancouver at the end of July and escaping the 100 degree weather. I know you dig the dining experience…any recommendations?

  53. Ah Wraith Cake, naked and nude …. so many opinions on that subject. I hate to see it commercialized, and forcing woman to choose between career and their values is wrong.

But I believe in nudity! Tons of people, friends and acquaintances, have see me bare to the world. I know a lot of naturalists, it rubs off. Not literally, but you know what I mean. Not only that, they’re all beautiful, every man and woman, all ages, shapes and sizes. Even me, with my fifty plus years and two hundred plus pounds, am absolutely beautiful without a stitch. (It must be my engaging smile). After a while, you don’t even notice. Unless you’re lying down on a cot with a headache and your male friend comes to visit and stands next to your head and you end up having a chat with the family jewels instead of his face. Disconcerting. But I digress (NO! YES! Really?) … my point is that people should be more naked more often so it isn’t that big of a deal. It is when we start hiding flesh that it gets dirty. Hang it on out and be comfortable with yourself! But not on the bus, they’ll arrest you for that.

And bring a towel. That’s another story about how a camp visitor earned the name “SkidMark.” No, I didn’t think you’d want to know.

  54. 1. How long will Woosley be command of Atlantis or has that not been decided yet?

    2. How to do you tell Bubba and Jelly apart since thay are both fawn pugs (Even thou they are not related I am trouble telling them apart)?

    3. Since you’re not going to Comic Con are you going have someone who is going get pictures for you so you don’t miss out on the fun that have seen cast and crew have in the Comic Con panel videos at Scifi’s website?

  55. Heh – I usually don’t point out your *boo-boos* unless I find them amusing. I find the date ‘Just 26, 2008’ quite amusing – especially since it seems to have gotten past all the grammar/spelling/correct date Nazis….

    Except me. 😀

  56. PS…

NEXT time I’m printing the screen BEFORE I say anything…so, type wisely…

  57. Keeping this down in the ‘basement’….

I read this in a TV guide interview..

Will Connor Trineer be back as Michael Kenmore (he should be, to fill in the details of the finale), and if so, for how many episodes? Are you planning on doing anything more with Wraith ally Todd (Brendan penny) than just a recurring character? – ScottRevels

Mallozzi: Doing more with Todd than just a recurring character? You mean, are we planning to make him part of the team? Nope. Todd, like Michael, works best as a recurring player. We have interesting plans for both. Watch for Michael to put in an appearance or two in Season 5, and expect to see Todd in at least five episodes this upcoming season.

Is that true? Todd in at least FIVE episodes?! ‘Cause, if it is, I just might have to take back everything I’ve pissed and moaned about over the last couple of months (well, except the ‘don’t kill off all the Wraith’ thing, but that’s another whine for another day… 😛 ). Of course, I’d love to see him more involved with the team, but understand the difficulties both for the actor (make-up, etc), and for the character. Besides, I really do think he’s more powerful as a recurring character – too much of a good thing can be bad, and all that. So, no rush to answer…I realize you have more important things on your mind right now, but when life returns to semi-normal, I’d be interested to know if this is true or not.

    Thankies.

    das
