Warm, caring, outgoing executive producer seeks fearless fans/potential volunteer corps militia for walks on the beach, long discussions on books, scifi, and haute cuisine, and world domination. Candidates should be honest, intelligent, and good with laser rifles.
Me! Me!
sign me up i’m all for the whole world domination thang… lol
Hey Joe-
Nice digs, really. Oh, and enjoy your quality time with your mother; those of us without mothers are jealous and wishing we had one more day…
One question that is absolutely driving me nuts; where are the jet skis, Joe? The kayaks? The canoes? Mother of a horse, Joe, it’s a city floating on water. Alantis is full of jet jockies that would get all giggly going 85 mph across the water or trying to stay up right in a kayak. Carter is a speed junkie; this is already canon. I can see her playing jet ski chicken with John and then both of them fishtailing water onto those unsuspecting souls basking in the sun on the pier. (I volunteer to show them how it is done.) This child of the (Atlantic) ocean wonders why there are no dockside parties with scantily clad half naked men in swimming trunks,(please use Speedos judiciously), drinking beer and talking manly things? Why are there no combat water polo matches? Joe, please use the water; it’s a wicked prop. Sag
Yeah….world domination sounds like fun.
“Volunteer” – that means that we don’t get paid doesn’t it. I have two cats to support so maybe I will have to think about it.
Okay Mr M! Warm and caring? What about your villainous persona? Do you not care about the fans that love to hear your snarky responses, and like to feel the wrath of Mr M now and again?
*sniff* With that said it is very quiet over here. Where the heck have all the grumpy people gone? *misses that* So, moving swiflty on. World domination? Hmmm let me think about that for a while [beat] count me in.
You know how I love to hear the sound of my own voice, and with an audience, think of the chaos and anarchy that could ensue! It would be just like old times.
*hugs*
I’m good with an AK-47. Do I qualify?
I’m with Susan in feeling a bit skeptical about this “volunteer” la-de-da. Sure, dress it up with long walks on the beach and fascinating conversation with a warm, caring, outgoing, polymathic power-that-be (who just happens to have multiple socipathic personalities and who likes to use chopsticks to practice detaching ears), but being a member of a world-dominance-type militia isn’t all pear beignets and dark-chocolate crème brulée.
Also, if we have to use laser rifles instead of our customary weapons (the Death Star, in my case), and *especially* if we have to be honest, I’d like to see some pretty impressive remuneration – say, carte blanche at Fuel, for starters, plus personal ninja training with Jet Li. If you want to rule the world, you need to look generous to potential supporters.
Contact sensitivetorturer@badnurses.com if you want my curriculum vitae.
PS: Who knew that a bogus email address would show up as a link?
*pulls out Glock service revolver and caps the monitor screen*
Fearless fan here who would love an opportunity to share her story ideas for season 5 of Atlantis with you..(Daniel Jackson story lines)! I’m also an avid reader and mythology junkie. As for world domination…bring it on!
Do I need to sign a life long blood oath? I may not be good with a laser-rifle but I’m honestly willing to try… Sign me up!!
Hello. Since I am looking forward to the Ark of Truth movie and hope it does well financially so that more movies will be made I feel obligated to inform you that the full movie is available to download and people are posting online where to download the movie. I know there is no way to pull the movie from every single website that has it or to stop people from burning and then selling it to other individuals. However, since there is another movie that has not yet been leaked you should attempt to find who leaked the Ark of truth so that person does not leak the next one.
Aren’t YOU supposed to fill in the bit at the top with all your details? Just under “About” and the date of 13 December.
Not sure if I should say “Duh” or “Doh”.
I like lazer-tag — does that count? ;P
Hi
I love to read, eating is one of my hobbies and Im in the US Military…we are always set on world domination.
Joe, I have recently started my own blog. Each week I will post a review on a different book I have read. This week I did Flaming London and next week is The Rosetta Codex. i was wondering if you had any suggestions on some great books that would captivate my audience.
Thanks
If possible, kindly schedule Operation Global Turnover (blackberry would be nice) during a full moon, when my pack and I can wreak maximal havoc. Werewolf Brigade will hit Washington first, then London. (But first we’ll have a break for Chinese take-out.)
Hey Joe,
Im a long time fan of your blog and find it very usefull for all the latest information on the Stargate world.
Great new design as well.
I’d love to ask a huge major favour if i can, would you consider adding the Atlantis Archive to your blog roll?
here is the web address http://www.atlantisarchive.com
Its okay if you cant, id just love to get the site noticed abit more
Hello Mr Mallozzi, my name is Christophe, and I am a French Fan of Stargate SG1 and Atlantis, by advance, excuse me for my English, it acts of a machine translation made on Internet.
I wanted to say to you that you do very good work, and that Season 5 seems well left to be excellent, but I find like much fan in France, that there is not enough nonhuman race aliens, and that it will be sympathetic that it appears a recurring race enemy coming from another galaxy, advanced which handles with the perfection the secrecies of Stargate and which it is not human, I think that that could only make the series better.
Another thing, just a detail, if you could reveal in an episode, a member of Atlantis with the French flag on its shoulder only the time of a few minutes, that would be super sympathetic… considering France is the only country of the United Nations not having had its representative on Atlantis.
I wish you a good continuation, and very good final for season 5, surprising and imposing being the hundredth episode with being the death of Wraiths ?
++ Christophe
Hi Joe
I appreciate you always taking the time to interact with your fans.
I am Curious to know if Ronon’s character is ever going to mellow out and gain some compassion as far as always going off half-cocked, always looking at every stranger with evil intent, and especially bullying Rodney (really hate that. He reminds me of some high school bully’s I knew). In the Last Man episode it was really annoying to see Ronon jerk Carson Beckett up off the floor (like he was a dog) when they were making their escape. I mean the poor guy was hurt.
I know he has come a ways with that since his introduction, but he can still be a bit annoying being a shooting first and asking questions later kind of guy. Diplomacy is not his calling. I seem to always find myself saying, (Hehe) Ronon, shut up put the damn gun away and follow orders. or, I hope it’s on stun. Thanks for reading Joe. -Ken

Hey Joe,
Congrats on such a long-running success with Stargate. Hoping you might have a moment to chat.
Cool…Hi Joe. Just wanted to say thanks for being good at what you do. I have ZERO creativity myself. Maybe I missed it Your recommend reading but I saw no mention of the GrandMaster of scifi Robert A. Heinlein. Do find his material a little “dated”? True, Heinlein generally wrote of the near future and the future caught up with him but except for Roddenberry none of the old masters foresaw the impact of ever cheaper computers or their effect on commutations and uh
answered the phone and now I have no idea where I was going with that.
I can do the long walks on the beach, but only have cutting wit and sporks as a defence mechanism.
Guess it’s not enough… *Sniff*
Laser rifles I could handle with some training. I’m good with the regular variety and handguns, also handy with a longbow (the Elven blood, ya know)…
Walks on the beach…yeah. As long as the beaches of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands please.
World domination is my life’s ambition – Queen of the Universe would be better, of course. Only because my elementary school report said “does not respect authority”…to me, that meant I must BECOME the authority in order to respect it. I’ll set up an online voting booth soon. I’ll make a great Queen.
Scifi-fantasy buff since childhood – even got to meet my idol Ray Bradbury at the Santa Barbara Writers’ Conference in 2005 (scored a scholarship via my writing mentor). John Wyndham, Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke & Robert Silverberg are some of my other favourites among the old guard.
So, do I get the job? huh huh?
Look forward to more wit and wisdom from the Baron and his cohorts.

Hi there Joe.
Been watching Stargate here in the UK since I was nine years old and I’m seventeen now.
Sadly, living in the UK means I can’t enter the ‘Enter the Gate’ sweepstakes despite being convinced I’d be an incredible Wraith…can’t get a McKay answerphone message either.
I love to read, love to eat, love to watch scifi and I am attempting world domination at the moment mwah.
Good with various forms of weaponry so laser rifles probably won’t be a problem.
I miss torri
Hi Joe,
I have a bit of good news and an update, also a book recommendation favour to ask. Please email me when it’s convenient for you.
TT
Hey,
Is that a black pug?
SO cute!!!
;P Sandy
Warm, caring, outgoing executive producer seeks fearless fans/potential volunteer corps militia for walks on the beach, long discussions on books, scifi, and haute cuisine, and world domination. Candidates should be honest, intelligent, and good with laser rifles.
Hey Joe, I believe I’m an honest sometimes intelligent person. I love food, sometimes scifi and with the world leaders today I would love to help with world domination but the walks on the beach would not go well with the hubby. Ha Ha! Nice blog, love reading them.
Bonjour John ,
Merci
Hani
Hi Joe,
As a history teacher I spend my days learning and teaching others the ins and outs of world domination…so I’m game. I of course love scifi…but only the kind that makes me think. But I’ll probably running on the beach. I just discovered the blog and I love it!
Still learning where to post things so here we go….My husband and I are going to Vancouver at the end of July for our 2 year anniversary. Do they hold any tours of Bridge Studios? We’ll only be there a few days before leaving for an Alaskan cruise.
Prends moi prends moi….
Joe said:
You’re hired. Welcome aboard.
Thanks! Now if only I could learn to close my blockquote …
“World domination,” hm?
Well, I never planned it as a group activity,
But I suppose I could set aside my ego and live a little!
I’ve blue prints, if you want…just…a little something scratched on a napkin then second drafted to a spiral notebook then final drafted to a 1 inch binder, 12 point Times New Roman (apropos, neh?) font, double spaced, MLA formatted, with illustrations… Nothing special.
Joe Said….“Warm, caring, outgoing executive producer seeks fearless fans/potential volunteer corps militia for walks on the beach, long discussions on books, scifi, and haute cuisine, and world domination. Candidates should be honest, intelligent, and good with laser rifles”
~~~ Well, Mr. M. I’ve worked a shadowy world, in buildings with no windows, three-position combination and cipher locks for over twenty years, so I’ll bet I can draft a plan for world domination that would work using state-of-the-art technology and invisible fighters flown by Baron Destructo and other members of The League of Aliens and Mutants for Evil. An amazing feature of these fighters are that they contain every luxury convenience you’d want, the least of which is huge HD screens that display every SciFi novel ever written with the innate ability to display the text in any font your heart may desire, just by thinking about it. The piece Dee résistance is that these attack fighters come with in-flight meals that are prepared by our personal Chef, Robert Belcham! Once the world is concord, any beach would be ours to roam and target practice with any rifle is easy when you’re the KING of the WORLD!!! I can carve a mean coconut cup with a laser gun at twenty paces! Can I join your team too!
Joe, we are Brazilians and we love Stagate Atlantis, would like to see a character in the Brazilian series.
Well, well, well…. If it isn’t my new BFF…
So about that photo you posted of me….can you tell I don’t believe in a hairbrush….yikes…
Next, you forgot to mention that I also dabble in ski patrol and the arts of being rad, or sick as the young people of today like to say…
Lucky for you I’m a reasonable young lady and am willing to let you make it up to me….how you ask??? Well, for my up coming birthday party I want you to make sure they don’t serve any of that awful seafood crap…instead….I was thinking maybe you could get a hold of that tasty chocolate “with just a hint of the migrant farm worker who was murdered and buried near the cocoa plant where the beans were harvested.” …shank shank….
Excellent.
Well J, it was lovely.
I look forward to more adventures….
Kenz
Well now, I do believe that Mackenzie is flirting with you Joe!!! How sweet! But I saw you first, and barring any objections from Fondy… I get first dibs! And not just on the chocolate. Hmmmm Good!
:p
Please stop offing the main characters. I miss Beckett. And then Weir???????!!!!! What were you thinking??? That character was a leader thanks to Torri. Carter just isn’t, she does not fit. It’s like replacing Han Solo with Spock. It does not work. The chemistry is not there. Carter should be Carter…her character is just not a leader in that respect. I have bought all the DVDs for Stargate and Atlantis, but at this point, I am wondering if I will continue. For me, it has been the chemistry of the characters that I have enjoyed most. I don’t see it anymore. And that new doctor??? No chemistry there either and I actually don’t believe in her character. Very disappointing.
I am losing interest in Stargate Atlantis because most of the story lines seem to be about posesion. Someone or something takes over one or more of the cast. There must be someone there with an original idea.
Where am I and who are you? I was just minding my own business looking for a place to blog about fishing. I feel like I’ve opened the door to the bathroom only to discover it’s the men’s room. “Sorry my bad!”
Well, anyhoo. Nice to bump into you and I like your foodie talk. Sounds yummy. I would excel at world domination for fried calamari-anything! Do you work out? There’s not really any good food here in Colorado but we like to play in the snow (and fish).
All the best, Jan (searching for world domination of fly fishing as a woman….)
‘Warm, caring, outgoing executive producer seeks fearless fans/potential volunteer corps militia for walks on the beach, long discussions on books, scifi, and haute cuisine, and world domination. Candidates should be honest, intelligent, and good with laser rifles.’
Slightly cynical Brit, equipped with enough sarcasm and dry wit to leave the World scratching it’s head.. nevermind domination. Okay, so I was dragged up on the likes of Black Adder, Python and Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I have to blame my parents for *something*.
I don’t surf.. we don’t really do too much of that on our menial waves (Spanish Armadas are more our forte). But I ski, climb, skateboard, paint.. and like to throw my dog into our beautifully polluted waters once in a while. I do own a gun and i’m pretty good with it too.. unfortunately, as the dog is a ‘Guide Dog’, not many folks stick around to see the fruits of my labour. I’ve got past needing him to mark the bullseye for me. Now, he just sits and whimpers behind me whilst I lock and load.
Intelligence.. well, I watch Stargate. I guess that counts as staying on the more balanced side of slightly deranged. I’m also a Nuclear Engineer by profession, so we could talk blowing things up whilst dipping our toes in the sand.
Did I mention how polluted the waters are around here?
Anyways, in a nutshell: Visually impaired Engineer, armed with a Walther PPK and Guide Dog, looking for someone to reminisce with over Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters, whilst skiing along the beach and watching the Spanish Armada sink.. again.
Oh.. do you do audio commentaries on those beach sunsets?
I love sci-fi and Stargate is among the best. And also – you should be able to know – who came up with the idea Wraith? They are perfect! And pictures on your web too.
P. S. Please apologize mistakes in text, I’m from Czech republic.
I’m still here…
Joseph,
Congratulations on all your successes!
Dino
Any need for an exotic Norwegian set nurse, with unexplored artistic skills in photography? Honest and highly intelligent. Not too experienced with laser rifles, but perhaps a talent for aroma therapy and massaging might make up for it?
Wow, just looking over the blog for the past year. If I had known just how good lookin’ AND intelligent these writers, FX guys and DoP (Director of Photography?) are I’d have made a greater effort to actually visit a sound stage at some point. Don’t suppose any of the above are single and willing to chat with a slightly used, but still lovable single lady in Arizona?
And I have to ask — chicken feet made the OK list? Really??? Great job on the Atlantis show, good luck on all your future endeavors, and I’ll give you every consideration on joining me with the whole world domination thing; honest.
Yours?
audition for upcoming ep?
Why are you doing this to stargate atlantis, i thought it was going great, it should at least make it to 7 seasons, thats a nice number not 5. and a movie is to short, and i don’t think people really want the wraith plot line finished in 2 hours. at least 1 more season please. DO THE RIGHT THING
I want a new Stargate Atlantis season!!
Vous ne pouvez pas arrêter Stargate Atlantis à la saison 5 c’est trop tôt , il y a encore bien trop de questions en suspend et de plus , il y a encore beaucoup de fans , ici en France qui suivent Stargate depuis le début …Alors , s’il vous plait faites comme aviez prévu , donnez nous nos 7 saisons de stargate Atlantis avant d’arrêter ! La France entière ne veut pas que cela s’arrête maintenant !
La france+Belbique= des millions de fans!!!!!
Hello, I am french, I do from a community Stargaters
and we believe that we should not now abandon Atlantis at the end of this fifth season is a wonderful series does not abandon us, even if there Universe which is under preparation and for television, it will not be such Universe is giving that will come off of 2 others.
we would need at least another season for us not to drop into the wild this new series without the support of a big sister for the launch.
this is a very bad news that we learned this morning avans from certain sites.
However, the mgm has not yet posted on its website this information.
would there be hope for a renouvèlement?
I thank you for your listening
Vive stargate Atlantis pour de nouvelles saisons!!!!!!!
I love Stargate Atlantis and i don’t want his End!
Il ne faut vraiment pas arrêter Stargate Atlantis les fans attendent tellement encore de cette série!
I want a new Stargate Atlantis season!! because we love this serie
SCI-FI and/or MGM gives us crap like Scare Tactics, some of the worst movies ever made that insult our intelligence and aren’t even good enough to rate as B movies, Destination Truth, and Ghost Hunters???! They cancel the best and most well written SciFi shows like SGA and Battlestar Gallactica. I quess since America wants crap, SCI-FI will step up to the plate and take the low road.
I don’t buy their excuses for doing this. MGM sees a cash cow in DVD’s plain and simple.
I have to say I’m not overly surprised by this. Hints were all over the place. I feel most sorry for the cast and for all the people who put together the “Save Carson Beckett” campaign. Giving Paul just five episodes always was just placating the fans – throwing them a bone to shut them up.
I’ll watch SG Universe and pray it’s worth a damn, but without Joe Flanigan, David Hewlett and the others, I’m not sure I care all that much.
Hello, i’m french and i have a website about the community Stargate.
Everybody love Stargate Atlantis, and we want a new season. Please.
By abandon Atlantis, you leave us… I also know that a TV film is preparing but I would like that you continue Atlantis with seasons, please!
Yes i’m agree with Slapea!!
i cant beleive this is happening why cash i bet always a winner with the suits
I really hope that we can all band together to keep Atlantis going. It has life left in it, no matter what the Keller/Woolsey/Carter haters, or the Weir/Ford/Heightmeyer campaigners say. MGM has really screwed Stargate– and not to mention itself– over.
P.S. Hey Joe. Since they have the chemistry, and a lot of fans want to see it, you should get John and Rodney together. I mean, what’s the network going to do? Cancel you?
Ask Martin Gero what happened when a young lady at the Vancouver Con suggested it. The whole hall cheered and clapped. Believe me. I was there. The young lady is my sister.
SLT,J’AI TOUJOUR VOULU VOUS ECRIRE MAIS JE N’AI JAMAIS EU LE COURAGE DE LE FAIRE JUSQU’A AUJOURD’HUI EN APRENNANT LA FIN D’ATLANTIS.SACHEZ Mr.MALLOZZI QUE TOUT LES FAN(DONT MOI) SONT CONTRE CETTE IDéE ET NOUS ALLONS NOUS BATTRE JUSQU’A CE QUE SCI FI DECIDE DE REDIFUSER LA SERIE.J’AIMERAI AVOIR VOTRE AVI SVP
Oui c’est sur qu’on va faire de notre mieux pour garder stargate atlantis!
C’est très important pour nous stargate !
Je parles pour tous les fans!!!!
I know this has been asked a million times before, but I can’t find it. Do you have an email address that I can send something to if it’s too long to clutter the comments sections with?
Good luck with the Atlantis movie. I’m really sad to see the show go.
je suis sure que nous pouvons faire quelque chose j’en suis certaine.en ce qui me concerne,c’est décidé je ne vais plus regarder sci fi et j’espere de tout mon coeur que tout les fan feront pareille.si tout les fan se réunissaient sci fi n’aura pas d’autre choix que de faire revenir atlantis pour faire monter les audiences.est-ce que quelqu’un peut me dire comment faire pour écrire a joe?je veux ire ça c’est les commentaires et moi je veux lui écrire a lui en personne…
je viens juste de signer une petition pour sauver SGA alr pour ceux qui ne l’auraient pas encor fait c’est ici:http://savetherlostcityofatlantis.bravehost.com/.en faite j’ai oublié de me présenter je m’apelle nesrine(nessa c’est le diminutif)j’ai 15 ans,je suis algérienne et je suis l’une des plus grands fan d’atlantis!si vous pouviez repondre a ma précédente question ça m’aiderai beaucoup…merci.
Okies.. scrub the above ‘I don’t surf’ bit. I’ve finally found someone with enough lack of self-preservation to take me out there. After convincing the guy that skiing with my eyes closed is far more likely to hurt than surfing with 0/0 vision, he agreed and bumped his life insurance a notch or several.
Just gotta figure out what to do with the dog. Somehow, I get the impression the Animal Welfare peeps won’t like me burying him up to his neck in sand till I get back >.>
So.. salt-clogged nostrils and sand-filled lungs, here I come. Laugh.. and i’ll set the soggy Labrador on you.
Hi again,I was wondering why nobody answered my question when I realised that it must be early,VERY early there in america because here in my country it’s time for launch!Please if you haven’t signed the petition to save SGA yet do it now,here’s the link:http://savetherlostcityofatlantis.bravehost.com/.
Ps:I’m non english-speaker so sorry for my mistakes and PLEASE sign the petition!!!!!!!!!! We already have 145.138 petitions and 8.905.571 signatures.If we continue this way I think we can save atlantis
Well, I am quite saddened by the fact that this is Atlantis’ last season. There goes my dream of having just a small walk on part…damn!!
I have loved Stargate from the first time I saw the original movie in the theatre, was thrilled with Stargate I and when Atlantis came along, well cannot say that I was thrilled to say the least. I mean Stargate had become a phenominal series on both cable and public television and had (has) a large audience. And now a spinoff…com’on. What were they thinking?
Well I had my doubts and when I saw the very first episode I was hooked and have not looked back since.
Since I do not have cable I have had to watch delayed episodes on my local tv channel but its well worth it.
And when Atlantis finally came out on DVD I did what any red blooded dedicated fan would do and purchased all four years.
(Had to ask my son for gas money for my car and groceries but, hey one does have priorities you know.)
I have watched these characters grow each season. And yes I was very serious in the fact that I would have loved to have just a walk on part in one of the shows.
I will miss all these wonderful characters that gave this show its essence and brought it to life. And I know that the actors, writers and all were saddended with this news, but they have given all of us “sci-fi” fans a great show to watch.
Thanks to all who made this series so great. Will miss the new episodes but am greatful for the DVD’s so I can continue to watch.
(Damn should have written sooner to ask about that dang walk in part…LMAO!)
Let’s step out of the hurt locker a moment and delve into the real reasons we are upset about the demise of SGA.
I’ve just finished reading everyone’s comments about SG-Universe and the 25-and-younger demographics they are aiming for. Given the fact that many of our teenagers can’t write a complete sentence, use punctuation or the right use of the word “there/their and to/too/two”, or write a term paper in something other than text language, I think I won’t be planning to watch SG-Universe after all. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not insulting the 25-and-under demographic at large. Many people on this forum fall there. Obviously they have good taste.
So what does this have to do with SG-Universe? If they are aiming for that audience they are going to have to “dumb-down” the show or a larger segment of that demographic simply won’t “get it”. Atlantis is a show with much nuance; humor and subtle statements that will be lost on today’s younger audience.
Many of SGA’s episodes pose real questions to consider about what is right and wrong which is why I think Atlantis appeals to the older demographic like myself. Is it right to experiment on another group of individuals, as evil as they may be, to protect ourselves? Right now some people think that using death-row inmates, whether they like it or not, for experimental drug therapies is acceptable. I am reminded of how experimenting on the wraith they named Michael, against his will had catastrophic results. SGA asks us to think about the consequences of war, the consequences of our actions and how we should rectify them. What should we do when we unleash the sleeping enemy on other nations? Do we worry about ourselves and defend our own or also help those we put in danger (think Iraq). Is it acceptable to use torture to get information? (think Cavanaugh as the suspect for sabotaging Atlantis and Ronan going in to beat the truth out of him)
This is what SGA fans are really going to miss. Not the fact that we won’t be able to watch the hot guys and babes every week; not how much of Tala’s chest are we going to see tonight; not getting to watch how many bullets Sheppard can put into a wraith; not how cool it is to watch someone get their life sucked out of them. This is what MGM and SciFi’s target audience for SG-Universe is going to understand, thus, dumbed-down.
That being said, I am 45 years old and I must note that Joe Flanigan is hotter than a cat on a hot tin roof and brings to life my computer desktop every day. Some days I can’t look at him for fear I will go mad with lust! MGM and SciFi – you suck the big one! Sorry about that. I digressed into a 25-and-under demographic moment.
NO offence but I seriously don’t understand the fans who say that they’re glad that the DVDs are here!We(TRU fans!)want stargate atlantis to continue as a series because we love it,we love the actors.we love having a new episode every week.We love reading spoilers for the first time….all that to say that we love everything in it…I’m speaking for all SGA fans!We don’t want the series to stop!SGA movies won’t be the same at all!!Joe,I know that this wasn’t your decision but….we can’t just give up!in less than 72 hours we collected more than 6200 signatures!!!it doesn’t happen everyday!I know that I’m just an other disappointed fan to you but….(I’m still speaking for all the fans)….delieve me WE NEED YOUR HELP!!comment voulez vous que nous sauvions la serie si vous ne nous aidez pas?!juste un peu de soutien sera le bienvenu su nos forums.on sait que la seriea peu de chance de continuermais…on y croit!pensez vous serieusement que si nous reunissons assez de signatures nous pourons sauver la serie?
J’aurai juste 1seule question,si nous réunissons suffisamment de signatures pensez vous que MGM et Sci fi pouraient changer d’avi?
Saying someone is not a “TRU” fan is very judgemental and harsh. People loved the show for various reasons…and just because its not for the reasons you are upset does not lessen the disappointment that Atalantic was not picked up for another season.
I am greatly saddened by the series not being renewed…and yes I will miss the characters, the actors who played them and yes, even the Atlantis set. Everything fit like a glove and melded so perfectly.
People will miss this series for a variety of reasons…but unless someone can change the minds of the upper echilon its just not going to be renewed plain and simple.
I have signed the petition as well as the other 6,000+ fans have. Hopefully it will make a difference, but again…unless it does then we must say goodbye.
Those who are not taking this decision well may not understand that all things must come to an end and we must move on.
But, ALL Atlantis fans very much realize that the producers, writers, actors and all support people associated with this show gave it 100% so we could have the BEST in a Sci-Fi adventure.
I want it to continue, but again…being realistic is knowing that it probably will not as they have already started another Stargate spinoff series.
Hi Joe,
I have an interesting idea (which I’m sure had already been thought of) for a potential SGA movie down the track.
I know we’ve seen the gould infiltrate Atlantis in the past, but that was only in humans… what would happen if the gould somehow managed to get inside a wraith… ? Jaffa Wraith Guards? Glowing Wraith Eyes? Distorted Wraith Voices!? Possibilities are endless!
Joel
Hey I work at the star trek experience in Las Vegas and was wondering if you guys were going to stop by are last day is sept 1.
Was also wondering where you guys would be filming so we could come by and say hello, as we are all be big fans. Thanks
Hey Joe,
Sorry about the show being cancelled and all. Only just made my way to you blog and you sound like you are one really cool dude.
I live in bonnie Scotland, in Aberdeen at the moment but I am a fan in transit. (Moving to England sometime in the not too distant future.)
I hope that you will be able to keep SGA going in films and please, please, please from the bottom of my heart, try to find a spot for Radek, Carson and Lorne in the first one even if its a 3 second walk by shot. Oh yes and my other favorite Canadian the Chucknician. LOL Atlantis just wouldn’t be the same with out them.
I hope that there will be lots of SGA movies to come after all ST are about to unleash number 11 I think.
I know that having a movie wont be the same as a series but if it keeps SGA alive, I’m all for it and I am sure that there are more stories to tell.
As for SGU I have to say that just because its for a younger age group doesn’t have to mean that it has to be dumbed down. After all, I know that kids are a lot smarter and more worldly wise than I was. I’m not sure if I will watch because I don’t want to spend 5 years getting in to a show to have it cancelled.
Best of Luck to you and yours
Sally
From what source do you get the questions to which you respond in your blog at this site? Is it from comments submitted here or elsewhere (and/or other sites like Gateworld)?
Also, will any or some group of the writers/producers/directors be attending the April 2009 convention in Vancouver?
Cheers
This is the first time I have ever written to a blog or in any way engaged in the interaction of a tv show. Thank you for responding to my quesions.
I have seen a great deal of negative comments about storylines, characters, and those who make SG happen. For what it is worth, I offer my thanks to all those from the creator of SG to those who have sustained its existence to date (actors, directors, writers, producers, and everone one else whose role might seem miniscule), I offer my thanks and appreciation for the longevity SG has sustained.
Liam
p.s. Oh, any suggestions on how one should dress in Vancouver in the month of April?
http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/SaveSGA/
Curious…since you are cleaning house on the SGA sets, can you give any indication what remaining stuff might be around for the April 2009 convention? The “Behind The Scenes Tour” in particular.
Slt,il ya quelques jours,je vous ai posé 1question et vous ne mavez pas repondu (je sais que vous ne pouvez pas repondre a tout le monde!) alr je vais la répéter en esperant que cette fois j’aurai 1 reponse:pensez vous que si nous réunisons assez de signatures(petition) nous pourons faire changer d’avi a sci fi?apres tout ce n’est pas la 1ère fois qu’une série est annulée puis reprise!!
Had a French friend translate Nessa’s comment
hello, you did no reply to my earlier emai. can you answer. Do think if we gather enough signature, Sci-fi would change their mind. It is not the 1st time a serie would be cancelled and restarted
Joe – I am curious as to interest in California affairs. The Citibank stuff….Up until recently I did not realize how much Canada/Vancouver played in to SGx…then I discover a lot of those involved live in Vancouver. So why would you find the goings on in Cali of any interest? Just curious. Side note, I am from So Cal but have lived in Denver since 1996. I was in Vancouver once before. Uh, a friend from Bellingham ( sp ? ) took me up their to a, hhmm, bar of amateur talent. I’ll leave it at that. I will be there in April, 2009 for the convention. For what its worth, I like your blog, and that you interact so much and on a regular basis. So far, I have not found any of the others involved in SG to have blogs like this. But then, I am a newbie to this convention stuff, even though I go back before anyone ever heard of “Kirk”.
Cheers
oops…”as to interest” –> “as to your interest” (hate it when that happens)
Yay, it took me awhile but i figured out how to ask a question……i think.
Names Mary, long time admirer of your work over here in the uk.
Well this has probably been asked a million times, but i wanted to ask myself.
Whats with the fricking Furlings?!!!
I really need to know. The last reference to the was in 300 where they represented as ewok types (hilarious), how ever i have exhausted my imagination (the best one being that they were really butch warrior types like the klingons) as to what they may look like/be and have resigned myself to believing that either a) they died out many moons ago, b) they split to another galaxy or c) you just have no idea.
As i believe that you can do no wrong i would hate it to be c so please please please put me out of my misery and make something up just so i can stop fretting!
Cheers,
M
Do not cancel this show. What an excellent tourch bearer for the franchise after the end of SG1. Besides there is so many story threads to get finished it would be impossible to complete them in the final few episodes and I don’t want to hear of movies just yet. I will boycott Sci-Fi over here and have already sent a direct e-mail to them and to Sky who show Stargate over here in Ireland. I am absolutely disgusted that the fans are once again being let down. Don’t go with what Sci-Fi want. Jump ship to someone else if it means we get one or two more seasons out of it. The ride is only half way through. Don’t leave us hanging. Finish Atlantis the way you want to, not the way big fat tv execs who don’t have a clue want to. It happened with Star Trek. Don’t repeat their mistake.
Ok…maybe I am just not informed as most are, but I wasn’t aware that Sci-Fi was cancelling the show I thought it was the production company itself cancelling it. If Sci-Fi were cancelling it surely SGA could find a home on another channel.
I too would love to see some more of the story lines completed before it ends. Where does Ronan go…does he ever find another to share his life with and does he settle down or they both go off to fight the Raith? Does Tayla go back to her tribe… does Col. Sheppard trans to another unit since he has basically no personal ties to Earth so to speak?
Stargate left alot of unanswered questions when it ended its ten year run…I think this time we need closure.
I like to know what happens to the characters on a series when it ends…I am not in favor of a cliff hanger (although Joe has promised not to do one) so I would want to know where all the main characters go.
Personally I hope the series finale is similar to SG-1, where we see the team members going off on yet another daily mission. I like to think that things keep going on, despite we’re not watching it.
Il n’est pas trop tard!!on peut toujours sauver la série!la plus part des fan ne vont pas regarder SGU!certains par esprit de vengeance(envers Sci fi et MGM!)mais la plus part le fera parce-qu’on a annulé leur série préférée!(dont moi!)Personnellement,je pense que cela va faire baisser les audiences de Sci fi(franchement,je l’espère!!)mais,je garde espoir,RIEN N’EST IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!tant que la production Stargate voudra continuer on a 1 chance!!!!
whoa…I have some catching up to do. However, when I heard about the big bang experiment going on in France/Swizterland…I thought of Carter and McKay. Let’s see..if memory serves…Carter destroyed a sun, McKay destroyed a solar system.
Hi from Montreal!
Two points:
First, in your blogs you mention sending questions, but I see no links, so how can I send questions?
Second, and quite possibly the most important one — I flashed onto a great slogan for fans who want to save the show (especially those who want to demonstrate with signs) –
Canceling Stargate Atlantis is Derentis!
Go ahead and use it! I’ll be proud.
Hi Joe
I’m a big fan of the show and love the blog, although I must confess I followed a link here from Lou Ander’s Blog ‘Bowing to the Future’ rather than a SGA site.
Sign me up as a loyal follower in the pursuit of world domination, book reading and shooting stuff with laser rifles.
I love the Book Club entries so far, let me know if you ever need any suggestions for books from the UK as I work in the retail side of the SF trade.
Keep on writing!
How did Corin Nemec and Christopher Judge get their scripts adopted as SG episodes.
I have an idea and beginnings of a script for a SG-A movie.
It is a bit on the wild side and could change the entire SG Universe.
Well I guess I’m 99th on the list, well thank god its not a percentile ranking
The end of Stargate…digs deeper even than the end of Farscape. Likely not all agree. I will be in Vancouver, BC in Apr 09…SG Atlantis just ended…I have been watching (email updates) as more cast members are listed to appear in Apr. At the time I signed up it was only Amanda and Connor. Any chance you can get all of the main characters from all of SG together in one place…for one last time? Oh, and well, any chance you can get a cross over to Firefly cast attendee’s? Just a thought…for what its worth…I will follow SGU. Side note…don’t know why so many dis Joseph…as far as I can tell he is the most interactive to those who watch the show.
cheers
Hi there Joe. Just writing to say how sad and disappointed I am that Stargate Atlantis is being cancelled but I’m going to go out on a limb here…and probably earn myself a few enemies along the way to say that I think things started going wrong when TPTB decided to pretty much kill off two main characters in the space of a few episodes. First Beckett (which left me randomly bursting into tears for days) then Elizabeth (which left me yelling at the TV).
No offence, but what on EARTH were TPTB THINKING? It seems that that over the years they’ve stopped caring about what the fans think and in some respects I’m not surprised it’s finally come to this.
The way in which the Elizabeth/Nanite/Replicator storyline was ‘tied up’ was pretty bad. I know there were issues surrounding Torri and whatever else but I thought it could have been dealt with in a better manner.
I’m also going to say, whilst I adore Claudia Black, Jewel Staite and the other characters who joined later from other shows but doesn’t it seem a little odd that these actors were hired after their own programmes were cancelled by SCI FI then both SG1 and Atlantis suffer the same fate? I’ve said it before. Call me a conspiracy theorist but I have been a long standing fan of Stargate since I was nine and I have been bullied and ridiculed for it and I feel we have been screwed over one too many times now.
Also, the Sam/Jack-will they? won’t they? is driving me NUTS! When are we going to get some closure?
Sorry. I am by no means trying to insult you directly but you do seem to be one of the few who actually take the time to listen to the fans. Rant over
Don’t forget: http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/SaveSGA/
Slt,j’aimerai savoir ce que vous pensez du rally que nous(fans!)avons organizé!
If one has an idea for a Stargate Atlantis movie that they know has merit and possibilities and everyone they told it to has loved it what should they do?
I’m French and I’m very upset. What have done? Have you loose your minds. Cancel the best sci-fi show! I received a slap this day and I don’t appreciate the method, kill a show Atlantis to run SGU. It’s a really bad idea. Have you respected the fan base? Have you respected all the work made by you and the cast?
I follow the Stargate franchise since the beginning. When I saw for the first time the Atlantis pilot I’ve caught by this new show. I’ve been enthusiastic by the characters John Sheppard, Teyla, McKay. At this time you run the 2 shows alongside. SG1 arrived to its end and I continued to watch weekly Atlantis. This show is really amazing thanks of the line stories, the cast. The show become better and better. And now what do you do? You cancel it when it has the best rate (I read 1.93) It has the best episodes. When the relationships between the characters become strong, evolved well, where the complicity between the actors is obvious.
Thanks for me Joe Flanigan, David Helwett for this. There is a great chemistry between them but also between Rachel Luttrell and Jason Momoa whose makes the success too.
You kill this show to replace by SGU. I tell you I don’t believe at all to this show. It’s seems to me a space travel like voyager. How can you believe that young people can participate to Stargate program? I’m 49 years old and I’m obviously not in the part demographic target.
I can tell you that I don’t believe in the movie because I prefer following weekly the characters and it’s another method to kill twice the show in my opinion. I’m Seri fan not movie. Have one yearly movie against 20 hours of series. I do my choice quickly. Without doubts the series.
Hear the anger of the loyal fans.
http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/SaveSGA/signatures
Thanks for listening.
Hi from France
What’s up Movie Man Joe? Need to see you soon. Life is just to boring withouut you and the old crew. Congrats again on the success.
Hi!
I was wondering who will handle casting for Stargate Universe?
I’m a New York based MFA grad from the American Repertory Theatre / Moscow Art Theatre. I’d love to audition for the show if there are any parts I type as.
Joe & Friends
here’s a site with free SciFi audio books. Might be something good there?….
http://freebiemaster.wordpress.com/free-audio-books/
Joseph Mallozzi a écrit:”A fallacious argument, suggesting that More Keller = Less Teyla. It might be true if we’d simply slotted Keller into stories intended for Teyla but the truth is we never intended for Teyla to be the damsel in distress in Tracker (frankly, it wouldn’t have made much sense) nor did we ever consider pursuing any sort of love triangle between Teyla, Sheppard, and Ronon (sorry Sheyla’s, Royla’s, Teypard’s, and Teynan’s).”.PAR PITIé!!dites moi qu’il ne veut pas dire qu’ils n’ont jamais prévu que John & Teyla se mettraient ensemble!!!qu’ils ne sont pas amoureux!!!
J’aimerai beaucoup que quelqu’un me réponde!!!a cette adresse:nessa993@live.fr merci!
I hope this is the right section to ask this..
I have been a fan of McKay since he first appeared on SG1.
I have just loved the way his character has grown since he has been on atlantis, I love the way you have incorporated his real life sister into the show…aswell.
Its like the Deluise boys, they have shown up in SG1 a fair few times.
Its Peter still part of the Crew at Stargate,
My question, I like the character Mckay and David Hewlet is a amazing actor, just adored his performance in Duet and the episode where he gets stucks in a jumper under water.
The name of that episode escapes me at the moment.
I feel he is unlucky in love, Will he ever make a move on keller.?
Jewel staite is a great actress, I saw her in serenity / firefly.
As SGA is now going over to film format will the story arc with Keller continue, and will we see Kate again…?
It’s been a year (give or take a couple of months).
What happened to world domination?
Taking over Japan one restaurant at a time is not the way to go about it Joe.
…although come to think of it, the idea does have merit…
Okay so it seemed like a good idea at the time, a time share in down town Basra. Who could have predicted that Operation Desert Storm would culminate in Operation what the fuck are we doing here.
So it is with great pride and a lot of trepidation…. in order to escape my abductors…..that I put myself forward as one of your stalkers….sorry strike that and replace with fearless fan.
Please excuse any spelling mistakes Joe as one of my friendly captors Abdul is transcribing this for me as I’m not allowed any sharp objects…..yet!
Ah where was I oh yes…. walks on the beach, the desert is quite nice this time of year, not much water so it doesn’t really qualify as a beach, so no to that one.
Long discussions on books, sci-fi…..now when you say long discussions what’s the average? Ten twenty minutes, any longer than that and my attention span does a nose dive. I envy a goldfishes seven seconds.
Haute cuisine, Abdul and I have had many ‘friendly’ discussions on this topic. I still insist that Haggis is a delicacy and not the spawn of Satan. We’ve agreed to disagree.
World domination, wow cool let’s get to it. Dibs on China….well what can I say I like the food.
‘Candidates should be honest, intelligent, and good with laser rifles’. I’ll let you decide how honest I am. Intelligent well I didn’t buy that timeshare in Kabul, I’m not that stupid!
About the laser rifle if you could just smuggle one into me!
Sorry Joe the above is just my bored brain and too much time on my hands lol.
Pauline
Hello.
Could you promote Major Davis? He needs to be a Colonel now.
Bezüglich: Stargate Universe.
Im Cast sollte Michael Welch (aka Young Jack O’Neill) mitspielen. Er würde einen hervorragenden Bezug zu Stargate bieten und den witzigen Charme eines typischen O’Neill versprühen.
Das ist es, was Stargate Fans sehen wollen!
Slt,puisque vs ne voulez plus d’Atlantis!alr pourquoi la série n’aurait elle pas d’autres producteurs?!je sais qu’en quelque sortes c’est votre bébé……!mais nous(les fan)ne voulons pas que la série se termine maintenant alr je trouve que tout le monde serait heureux si la série avait d’autes producteur!!vs vs chargerez de SGU pendant que quelqu’un d’autre se chargera de SGA!vs ne pensez pas?!!
Hi,since you don’t want Atlantis anymore!why wouldn’t it have other producers?!I know that in some ways it’s your baby….!but we(fans)don’t want it to end now so I think that if the show had other producess everybody would be happy!!you will take care of SGU while somebody else will do the same withSGA!don’t you think?!!
Joe,
You look very exited about your new show!thing is………(even if you don’t seem to realize!)…….MANY Atlantis’fans(not to say MOST of them!)already HATE SGU!why?cause you cancelled their favorite show to replace it by Univers!!so they are DEFINITLY not gonna watch it!and I’m not talking about 10 or 20 people,I’m talking about……….MANY MANY fans!!!if you don’t believe me just take a look to our forums!!or wait until SGU premieres and….you’ll see!!
Joe,we’re not asking you to cancel SGU we just want SGA to continue!!
If you are casting STARGATE UNIVERSE you should look at both STEPHANIE JACOBSEN and NICO CORTEZ. “Kendra Shaw” and “Young Adama” respectively. They were awesome in that one off movie BSG:RAZOR. Both awesome actors.
Michael Welch (aka Young Jack O’Neill) for Stargate Universe!!!
Would You like to know how Furlings (and all the others original Sheppard encountered) look alike?
I’ve just discovered ” across the universe” and reading it I feel hurting by the Cooper’s statement.
http://stargate.mgm.com/news_detail.php?id=114
“As fans slowly get over the news that Stargate Atlantis will not be continuing to air for a sixth season ” We don’t give up and I do not belong to those slowly get over. I don’t accept your abrupt decision.
You should know many of them are very disappointed by their behaviour to us. They should know many of them don’t accept you to kill best show Atlantis. How can they ignore the sending of lemons, the mails and snail mails received? We left here some statements to B. Wright and he’s never respond.
How can they ignore the petition?
http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/SaveSGA/signatures/pg/524
“Some fans have queried the wisdom of having such young characters, but Cooper points to the youth of Stargate SG-1′s cast when it launched” Yes a part of the cast was young but they don’t cast young characters.
“The team that ends up on the ship is not really who was supposed to go, and in some cases they’re very unprepared and unqualified to be in that situation…..the challenges are greater than they would be for people who have seen it all and don?t have as far to go as characters when they encounter an incredible situation.”
Young unprepared and alone in one ship. Unrealistic.
“There will certainly be plenty of opportunity for cross over, and there certainly might be some familiar faces in the premiere and in subsequent episodes.” Lost in space but there will be some cross-over with some familiar faces. I thought the ship lost in space and alone. New bones throw to us. How these cross-over will be possible.
“fans eager to know will just have to sit tight” Absolutly not.
To Mr. Cooper and Mr. B. Wright: I’m so tired to see them showing us so disrespect, scorn and take his own desire for ours. They are so condescending. They hurt me alot. They try to tell us what we think. You abandon us, the show Atlantis, the cast and the characters and Stargate franchise too.
You’re going to loose a lot. You seem so exciting by your new toy but I feel so disappointed.
Yesterday you spoke about Atlantis and the characters and how they were great( sheppard MacKay Teyla and Ronon) Now where are they?
“One of the most fascinating aspects of working on a show like Stargate: Atlantis is the passion with which fans express their love for the series. Sometimes, they’ll convey their loyalty by attending conventions, joining online communities, or posting their thoughts on this very blog. Other times, they may organize a petition drive, demonstrate outside the studio, or “send an angry letter threatening to key my car”( don’t do this).
You know how we are related to the show and its characters. Why do you destroy all this work?
My fight save Atlantis. I hate this idea to create a new show on the still warm dead body of Atlantis.
Dominique from France
I’m good with the talk of Sci-Fi.
Count me in fo’sheezy!
SAVE ATLANTIS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! La belgique est avec vous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The belgium is with you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Joe,
I just want to say THANK YOU! for maintaining your own blog. It is really interesting to read so lots about the things going on behind the scenes. And I learned some things about good food, too.
Sure it is sad that SGA was cancelled. But life goes on. It hit me harder when SG-1 was cancelled. But SGA was a good show, too.
However you can’t make everybody happy with your or the studio’s actions. But the things Dave Howe said about the fans were kind of cruel.
“There’s obviously a passionate audience for Atlantis and the characters of Atlantis,” Howe said. “And yes, they’re absolutely going to continue in the movie franchise. But people need to mourn for a while and come to terms with it. I don’t anticipate that that will subside quickly. But once Universe is on air and they have kind of their next fix of the Stargate franchise, I think hopefully people will realize that it’s in safe hands at Sci Fi, that we really value this franchise and it’s in our interest and the fans’ interest to let us continue the story and figure out how to retell it for a new audience every few years.”
I think we were a good audience for the Stargate series all these years. And our age does not matter, we were, are and will be SciFi Fans! And to say to us, that we are not the right or the target audience, just sucks!
Greetings from Germany,
Isto
You know, I don’t know if I’m the only verbal one on this opinion, but…
At least the stargate lives on in Universe. If it had stopped altogether, ie no Universe, no upcoming movies, etc… then people would cry for sure.
As for me, I think I like SG-1 and Atlantis in their own ways, so here’s to hoping that Universe will prove just as enjoyable (which I’m sure it will and Mr M and all the other ppl on board will do a great job as usual).
(sadly enough, I don’t watch any of the episodes, cos I can’t… but I do get to read the transcripts with many thanks to Callie Sullivan on GateWorld.)
So… ppl who like to complain, pls read through all the complaints and see whether there is anything more to complain about than to read complaint after complaint after complaint.
Hi Joe,
First of all I would like to say I absolutely love Stargate… both Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis. I am a fan in the mildest sense. Unlike other fans, I have to admit that I don’t know which writers have written their specific episodes. Probably because I enjoy every episode. I am a fan probably because I own every Stargate Atlantis DVD Box set (Not SG-1, coz I started watching it really late) but still watch the syndicated shows on T.V. I hold my own marathons before a season starts. I even got my own brother to watch AND get addicted to it, too. Plus every Friday night when I go out with my friends to have a few drinks I always tell them to go ahead. They all know that I stay home til I finish an SGA episode… and that I record the episodes in my DVR, and whenever I come home, be it at 2am or 4am, I watch the episode again. I am also a shipper. I was disappointed with the whole Ronon/Keller/McKay thing an how it all turned out, but I respect the whole decision of it… It’s either you disappoint the McKellers or the RononKeller fans. I was sad to hear about SGA and how this is their last season. But I guess quitting while you’re on top is the best thing.
Aside from me congratulating you on the success of the stargate franchise and thanking you for providing us with great entertainment for more than a decade, part of why I’m doing this is because of one small pathetic reason: It’s very pathetic and desperate, I’m telling you… and I still can’t believe that I’m doing this. I guess like I said, it’s out of desperation. Apart from Stargate, my main loves in life are my family and my job. I absolutely love my job. But about 3 hours ago, I learned from my boss who is one of my very best friends that I might not have it anymore in the weeks that will come. It’s the economy. Two weeks ago, I thought I was free and clear. Now as I am sitting here in front of my laptop, after having searched through job sites for over 2 hours, I realized that my skill as a designer is not as important as I thought it was. They no longer need people like me. My boss says that I would find it easier to find a job since I’m young, attractive and have lots of skills. Yeah right. Someone once told me that I was over qualified. So to soothe my ruffled feelings and mind I turned to what usually makes me smile, reading your blog and gateworld. I came upon the article of the casting call again. And there I saw, ‘Tamara Jon 20-25, all ethnicities (Asian Preferably)’. Godsend? Or maybe a sign? Or maybe a kick in the head… because eversince I was 16 talent agents have tried convincing me to audition for this and that… but I always declined. Why? Probably because of the lack of self-confidence that I had back then. But now, when agents are still after me? I really don’t know. Maybe it’s coz I’ve been designing for five years now, and it seems like acting or modeling might not be for me. But see, what caught my eye with Tamara Jon’s description was the age and ethnicity… I just turned 26, and people still say I look way younger than what I really am… sometimes they say I look like I’m 17, kinda creepy especially when they’re older men giving me suggestive looks… And I’m also Asian. Filipino to be precise. So why am I writing this? I still don’t know. Maybe I’m just venting. Or maybe I haven’t absorbed the shock of it all. I’m just starting to realize that I might not have a job tomorrow. I have never been in a situation like this before. One thing is for sure though, maybe if I had pursued a modeling career, I probably wouldn’t be crying my eyes out right now. Maybe through a modeling or aacting career I would’ve made made my way into being a set designer by now… or a costume designer, I’ve always loved the movies anyway, and dreamed of being in a set one day, either to be in front of the camera or behind-the-scenes. Maybe I should’ve started that way, instead of working directly for an architect. The whole point of this? Maybe I’m actually wishing that by some miracle, I might find a job that I love again. Because that’s my whole point of being… to love what I do, because I love life so much… that to do a job for the sake of money is just not how I would like to go through life. But then life is never easy and I have to suck it up. Maybe I should’ve gone to church when my parents had asked me to. Maybe, maybe, maybe… Oh wait… this isn’t MY blog, is it? So sorry for the overly long monologue… I got carried away. But I’m just gonna put it out there, since I’ve embarrassed myself enough. I do not know how to contact whoever I need to contact. But I would really appreciate an email or contact number (fax, office no., whatever) so that maybe I could send a resume. I figured that since I’m no good in doing things that I don’t like doing, and there isn’t anything else for me to do… Not a lot of people are hiring designers who can use CAD these days… then maybe I could (by some miracle) work for my favorite program (or rather the franchise) using my talents.
I am now going to click the “Submit Comment” and embarrass myself. Thank you!
Je vous écrit en espérant que vous pouvez traduire/comprendre le Français.
Voilà j’ai plusieures questions :
1. J’aimerais savoir si il est possible de communiquer des idées pour la future série “Stargate Universe”.
2. Est il possible pour un fan de s’inscrire pour un casting sur le tournage d’un épisode ? Comment ?
3. Dans Stargate, n’est-il pas étonnant que l’anglais soit la langue la plus parlé dans deux galaxies ?
Ne serait-il pas possible de parler de traducteurs intégrés comme des mini-oreillettes dans un épisode de Stargate Universe, afin d’éliminer cette incohérence ? Ces traducteurs pourraient avoir été inventés par les anciens et trouvés en même temps que la porte des étoiles. Puis produit en masse grace aux recherches de la zone 51 pour les équipes SG et Atlantis sans qu’il en soit fait mension jusqu’ici. Enfin c’est juste une idée.
4. Pour changer, ne serait-il pas possible que l’extra-terrestre du groupe Stargate Universe soit un Furling ?
Qu’il s’agisse en fait d’un Elfe farceur, insouciant, facécieux mais puissant. Avec divers pouvoirs psychiques comme la télépathie et/ou la télékinésie. Un être ingénieux et bricoleur, qui ne prend rien au sérieux doté d’un humour sarcastique, exaspérant mais qui va évoluer au fil des épisodes. On apprendrait ainsi qu’au fond il est triste et mélancolique d’être le dernier représentant de sa race mais qu’il le cache par son humour comme un masque. Au cours des aventures il pourrait mûrir, prendre conscience de l’importance de certaines choses, devenir plus sérieux ou en tout cas moins insouciant. Cela ferait un bon personnage je pense. Voilà, c’est tout, qu’en pensez vous ?
Hi Joe
I was saddened to hear that SGA is not going to be on any more, as I was when I found that SG1 was finishing, but things change as they must, that is life things always move on like a big wheel always turning, at least we will have another Stargate to watch, I will look forward to it being aired, and hopefully will be able to watch it as well which would be a bonus.
I have read all your blogs on here and all the replies with much interest, I like listening and reading other peoples different opinions on things, it makes for a interesting life.
I am curious as to whether you will have any of the SG1 or SGA characters in the new stargate though, but I suppose that would be telling really wouldn’t it, hmm but it would be nice to see at least one familiar face in it all.
Regards
Karen
Who the hell is Joe Mallozzi?
Where is the PORN???
I am very excited that Robert Carlyle is going to be the star of Stargate Universe.Its going to be great!!!!
Hey, J., what’s with the little smiley at the bottom?
Hello,
Just a word to tell you thank for those years with Stargate, I hope it will continue for a long time.
And maybe one suggestion, “grande cuisine” is better than “haute cuisine”. Even if “hot cuisine” is the best one ^_^ but if you said “haute” it’s like “haute couture”, isn’t ?
I’m playing on words, anyway, Thank.
I apologize, a friend just told me than we actually use the term “haute cuisine” even if “grande cuisine” is more common.
Sorry, I’d think before write anything next time. ^^
As a mad Irish man who lives in GOOD OLE CHICAGO, LOVE THE SHOWS and the dogs my peekinese would give your dogs compotition, he is described as 95% hair 5% Tongue and 4 x 2 inch legs.
Enjoy the rest of the trip have a great new years end party Joes and hope that the luck of The Irish goes with you in 2009
I wish to work with You but life is too short to reach it
RIP SG-1 and SGA, the two finest science fiction shows ever. At least we’ll have hundreds of episodes left to re-watch and find new things in them every time.
Can’t wait for SGU!!!! sounds like a great addition to the Stargate lore.
I remember how we got into SG. 2004, I showed the original 94 Stargate film to a couple friends. We decided to Netflix SG-1 and then we were hooked! Watching 3-4 episodes a week, we quickly caught up right before season 9 started. We also got into Atlantis at that time. We were watching so much SG that we had dreams we were part of a team. SG-457! HA
Jeff
Dear me, someone in Hollywood who is encouraging people to read without it being a condition of their parole? Did I die?
Anyway Dave Freer and Eric Flint’s “Slowtrain To Arcturus” is a great read too, If you like classic era SF you’ll adore this book too.
And yes, I admit my bias.
Hi Joe,
The Belgian audiance loves SG!
Shame there weren’t alot of Belgian flags on expedition members! ( I think I saw one, but can’t remember)
Change that for the movies please!
Keep up the good work,
Regards
I am a young actor, and wondering about where i would apply to be an extra on SGU.
regards
well, I rock with laser rifles and world domination is my specialty, so I guess, that means I’m in? lol.
I like reading, so I’ll take you up on that and I’m a pretty big SG fan. Lookin’ forward to Universe and the upcoming movies.
I do have one question though (okay, it’s more my brother and his wife’s but they won’t ask) will we ever see Jack and Sam officially together…and by that I mean not in a dream, they’ll both remember it, yadda yadda yadda. lol.
Hello Mr. Mallozzi,
I am a huge fan of stargate and i’ve grown up with it.
Actually , the casting of Stargate Universe is in progress, and i don’t know if you have found an actress for the character of Chloe Walker, but i would like to propose you one. She is named “Sarah Carter”, and as far as i know she is not under a contract at the moment.
Recently she has played in the TV show “Shark” which last a year ago. She is in my humble opinion a very good actress and will be a good asset for the cast of SGU.
Thank you for reading me and good evening to you.
What is it about world domination that gets people so excited? I’d settle for an early night and a cup of hot cocoa with marshmallows anything else is just a waste of effort, believe me I’ve tried. I am a crack shot with a catapult and was from a very early age thanks to my Grandad who made me one (he was an engineer and it was a shit-hot cataplut)…hey! I typed cataplut..I like it, its staying! Anyways we were both in deep shit when we inadvertently bust something of grandmas and it was ceremoniously confisticated….I got it back 20 years later tho and was as good as ever after a couple of practice shots over the hedge into a nearby nudist colony.
My, my. How have I manged to not comment on this yet? Well, you know I’m always happy to assist in world domination. Just say the word and I’ll shine up my laser rifle and strap on my ninja stars. I may not have the best aim, but I make up for it with enthusiasm (and anyway, what’s a few severed ears compared with someone who’s willing to tar and quarter interlopers for you?)
hello mr Mallozzi please give me a role on the SiFi series stargate univers pls pls i am the bigest fan from romania. ok thanks and waiting for your answer on mail adres (hund88@freemail.hu) and thank you very much. AND I HOPE MR MALLOZZI YOU GIVE ME AN ANWER PLS BYE
Hi Mr Mallozzi, I know it’s a long time off, but when is Stargate Universe going to be broadcast in Britain? I know it is due for broadcast in the US in the fall, but is it going to be broadcast in Britain at the same time, towards the end of the year, or at some point next year? I am a huge fan of the whole Stargate franchise, I didn’t particularly enjoy Atlantis at the beginning of it’s run, but really enjoyed it towards the end of its run, but I am really looking forward to Universe and the next SG-1 film and the Atlantis film.
Please let me/all of us know,
thanks!
Hello, just thought of another question, will there be oppertunites for fans to appear in either an Atlantis or an SG-1 movie, or in future seasons of Universe???
thanks,
Hi there! I was wondering if you were going to make it to Worldcon this year? Would be neat to see over this way.
Joe, you’re an exceptionally brave man by having your own blog and leaving it open to comments. Kudos; I’d be far too yellow to give fans a direct line into your life.
Good luck with SGU, I look forward to see how the universe (you see what I did there, eh?!) develops.
Hey Joe (sorry, couldn’t resist),
I love your blog – I usually read it on RSS – your posts are amusing and insightful, even on those days when nothing amuses me about this industry.
I’m at a loss, and hope you might be able to help. I’ve put the finishing touches on a proof-of-concept I have for the Sanctuary folks, only to find that all the contact links I had went *poof*.
Could you help by passing a message on? We were still fixing bugs when you posted your call for Q’s for Amanda last week – and I know that time is growing short. I would be happy to send you a secure link to the project files if you’d like to vet it beforehand (it’s a concept that could easily apply to SGU & Destiny). Thanks again.
Hi Mr. Mallozzi,
a little greating from Denmark!
I´ve been a huge fan of Stargate ever since the first movie came out and continued my passion for scifi and mythology!
I today hold a Bachelor in Egyptology( sadly, I´m not working in that field) due to the impact Stargate have made on me and since I´ve always been a huge Scifi fan, I´ve now gotten my back tattooed as a tribute to my passion and You and Your colleagues work on Stargate!
I´ve provided You a link to a blog, if You have any interest in seeing the result so far?
It´s a combination of the sign of Anubis, Pegasus/milkiway-Stargates and the adresses of Earth and the original Atlantis side!
I´m so looking forward to Universe to start airing, so I can get the final touch done on the tattoo!
I want the Destiny adress in the middle!
(So let me know if You want some pre-air advertising of the show for free….)
Sincerely
Kasper Kvistgaard
Denmark
Joseph Mallozzi,,,,,,,What the hell are you thinking Ending Stargate Atlantis? The only good show on and you end it!!! Are you brain dead? or Are you wanting to kill off SciFi all together?? That was the only good one on!! Me, like many others are going to the BBC channels as SciFi is still alive there… Not happy!!!
Hi Joe,
I was just looking through some of your old posts and I was wondering if there was anyway I could see the videos that used to accompany them??
Thanks!
I chose Atlantis for one of my spring specs. A few rough drafts and I’m positive my pacing is off.
What kind of instructions did you have for action beats? Was there ever a quota? Did you ever feel you were guilty of killing a script with dialogue?
Dear Joseph,
I was wondering if you ever read the book “Reading Stargate – SG1″? It is a book of essays and commentaries about the Stargate genra. It is very interesting. I didn’t realize the Stargate got that deep. Thanks for the Stargate franchise and please(!) keep it going.
With fond regards,
BlondieChemGirl
Dear Mr. Mallozzi,
I want to ask you, if you can give me the meaning (phoneme) of the Stargate Symbols e.g. Stargate Symbol for Earth is At. Like Planet Praklarush Taonas at Stargate SG-1 Season 7 Epsiode 21/22 – Lost City (http://stargate-wiki.de/index.php/Stargate-Symbole).
Thank you for your help.
Sincerely yours
Philipp Becker
Joe,
Will we see the Ancients’ form of fighters (ie, like our f-303s?) on the destiny. 2. will we ever get to see the seeder ship? 3. i have been seeing a lot of posts on forums with fans thinking there is only one ship and most people are confused about the seeder ship concept.
Stephen Sheridan
Joe – Have there been any thoughts to continuing either SG-1 or Atlanta though Comics Books or Graphic Novels? I know some were made a while back, and thought that might be a great opportunity to keep fans happy with new stories, but do it at a lower budget. Thanks for the blog!
Dear Joe,
Great April Fools joke on Ashleigh, but I am really glad she got you back. I still have visions of her helping “Elizabeth (xxx)” unpack and repack her husband corpse for the convention in Burbank(?). It might be a good idea to work from home this week, but it would be difficult to keep an eye on her from there.
Hope all is going well for everything Stargate and enjoy the convention. Wish I was there.
With fond regards,
BlondieChemGirl
hey I am Zahraa
I have an question plz. ?
do u know how i can send Joe Flanigan and Ben Browder an email just like this here?
I will be very happy if i get an answer for my question.
Have a nice day
Greatings from Germany
let me just saw that i cant believe a show doing so well and with such a big following like stargate atlantis should not have ended that way yes this is months late but i think that it should have at least gone for the 10 seasons that most people were thinking becuase even when SG-1 was struggling it made it that far and this new show universe with almost no characters from the original 2 shows looks like a cheap knock off an i think that the way that atlantis ended will hinder the fan base of this new show
Hi,
where does the SG-A episodes filmed? And where you live
Joe?
Is it warm there? I mean is it hot there?
(This is my formulation, don’t copy
)
Hallo Joe,
one question: So many fans would like John and teyla come together. Is there any possibility?
Thanks!
No, because she is mine
Hi Joe,
Just started watching your blog last week – you are one funny/clever guy – and you talk about all things Stargate- I am hooked!
I do have a question though- Shep has had 2 “liasions” with acended women when they took human form – any chance of a little shep to come back to see him in the future?
Hi Joe
Here’s the link to “Ancient Technologies” that I thought would be of interest to you.
Lots of good ideas for plot and techno-babble tough being a physicist makes it hard to swallow some of his “explanations” and “theories”!
Have fun and great party at Fuel; you have certainly out-done yourself again!
Howdy–I was wondering if you ever considered magazines for you book-of-the-month. GUD’s often been confused for an antho if that helps any. I’d be happy to send you a copy of our latest issue (or a digital copy if you swing that way). Greatest Uncommon Denominator Magazine is 200+ pages of literary+genre fiction, poetry, art, and more–so we’ve got your categories covered.
Thank you for all the work you’ve done with Stargate. My wife and I are big fans!
Will the Star Gate Universe production team be using the new RED 4k Cameras? They looks so much better then the Sonys.
Joe, I recorded a video web message on you tube that I hope people like yourself will highly consider. It will basicallly tell my life story and my hopes and dreams. I hope you’ll consider my request as it would mean a lot to me. Would you view it and let me know what you think?
The video is located
Thanks and looking forward to SGU
Hi Joe,
I was wondering where I can email a character idea to you. I have inserted said character into cannon of season four of Atlantis, and I know that the script for the movie is finished, but for future scripts, maybe an idea. I know that you said anything is possible in regards to Sheppard ending up with a significant other. This character would be that other. Please let me know if you would be willing to accept the idea. If not it is okay. I just thought I would ask. Thanks. Can’t wait for the movie and SGU.
Hello Joseph! I have a really important question: Do you like
Orange Juice? No – just kidding… What kind of Software are
you using for screenwriting? Can you may send me an email?
Thanks! I am your F.A.N. (frustrated and nancified
)
In the finale of Atlantis there was a new ship, the Sun Tzu, that had never been established in Dialogue before. Ellis mentioned that the Sun Tzu was loosing air, and the Appollo was taking on its survivors. Was this intended to be an ill-fated, black-mail financed, Chinese BC-304 similar to the Russian ship Korrelev?
The only reason I ask is due to the fact that it seems given the presence of other nationalities in the gate-everse, americans often have less severe mortality. i.e the Chinese and Russians are the token red-shirts
Joe,
I am a long time Stargate fan. I got my Dad watching it, and he says it is way better than Star Trek (he has been a Trekkie for years). I want to thank the Stargate teams for all the wonderful shows, and even the ones I didn’t like. I read your blog and think that SGU will be great. I love the actors you have hired and the teasers look interesting. Sadly, I will not be able to watch. I lost my job and had to give up cable (or starve). Will Sci-Fi put any episodes on their website to watch? My closet family with cable is an hour and a half away. If not, I will gladly miss a few meals to buy the DVD’s when/if they come out. Please keep up the good work. My neice is also a fan of the show and has decided that she wants to be just like McKay when she grows up. Even though Sam is also a physicist, she thinks Sam is too military. Thanks again.
Shelley
Hey there Joe.
I can’t wait to see SGU. I am looking forward to seeing how the ideas all play out.
Also love the cast. Robert Carlyle. Wow what a coup!!! The teasers have really got me interested.
I have watched all five seasons of SGA after having got in to the last two seasons of SG-1. I have enjoyed all of it. I know that I may be in a minority but I liked the McKay/Keller rel in season five.
I have the first four seaasons of SGA on DVD (a fact that is causing me much angst as I cant seem to find any of them. I only have one disc from season three because it was in my player!! LOL)
I hope that there are more SG-1 movies and that the SGA movies get to go ahead. Is that likely?
Rock on and keep up the good work.
Thanks for taking me on the ride of my life and I didnt even have to get of my sofa!!
Best wishes
Sally
See I clicked and 173 other people clicked…and all the tab said was about. Imagine the possibilities Joe if the tab at the top said The Doghouse (ooh I like that one) or Joe recommends.
Have some faith Joe. The BOTM in the sidebar worked, didn’t it?
Cheers, Chev
Joe,
Is this the write place to ask a question for the Mailbag?
How do I get my question answered. C’mon, my question about th Sun Tsu wan’s that stupid.
Hi Joe, I love Stargate Atlantis, and i can’t wait for the movie. I did have one question. Who is the costume designer for the movie? Thanks for all the great years of Stargate. I’m looking out for SGU….
Joe, which of the Atlantis wrting staf is the Johnny Cash fan? And makes Col SHephard the same.
I have been reading your blog for several months now after I found it on one of the various Stargate web sites, never commenting but enjoying the perspective of Stargate behind the scenes look and life, food, book reviews and dogs. I just thought I say Hi. Don’t know if this is where to post questions (sorry forgot where to send them)but here it goes a question came up on the forums of another web site that was debated and no one had the answer ” How old is the Character Vala?” if you could provide you insight on this and use it to put the isseu to rest. If you want to email me back, or just mailbag it, it ok with me. Thanks, Jeremy
Jeff and Maddog
Go to Joe’s blog entry at the following url address:- http://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/ it will take you to the current blog entry. If you acess ‘comments’ at the end of the entry you can leave a message for Joe there.
Good luck
Hey Joe,
I’m just wondering, in the newest SGU trailer we see that the whole gate spins, I just can’t work out how the symbols for the required gate address are going to lock? Thanks.
Dear Joseph,
I know many people write you so I’ll make this short.
I’ve heard about the budget restrictions due to the rise of the canadian dollar and how this has had an impact on your proyects. And I believe I have a solution which you will find interesting.
I Live In Bogotá Colombia in South America and I’m a HUGE! fan of StarGate Atlantis. I recently found out that some american producers where coming to shoot episodes and even whole seasons in the Fox Telecolombia studios in Bogota. I’ve heard that the production costs are cut by almost 300% with no adverse effect to Quality.
A good example of this is the series “mental” of wich I post a link underneath this comment.
I´m just a fan, but if I can help bring back Atlantis, I´ll do anything in my power to make this possible, even commit the staff at my company to help out. PLEASE! investigate what I´m telling you and you´ll find out It´s true.
Well, you have my mail, please tell me I´f you found this post of your interest.
Take care.
Still terribly upset about Atlantis being killed of in its prime.Will never watch your replacement .WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU greedy bugger
Dear Mr Mallozzi,
Please, please, please ! If he belongs to the cast, no more wig on Jason Momoa’s head in Stargate: Extinction! It’s very awful ! it’s seems like an octopus on a rugbyman! Not at all like his real dreadlocks!
I love Ronon Dex and I’m sure you can find a solution for him! Perhaps a little cut to charm Amélia Banks!
Thank you for all these fabulous TV shows and good kisses from Castelnaudary (worldwide capital of the “Cassoulet”)
PS: I apologize for my English, I’m only a little frenchie!
Greetings,
i am a real fan of all sci-fi But i like all of Stargate both SG-1 & Atlantis and i hope it will not end on a movie i see there is still a future for Atlantis for 3 more seasons and 2 more movies with SG-1 .
i hope that i can be an actor in Stargate one day just for a Movie or a Few Episodes , you know it is impossibile since i am living in Saudi Arabia i dont Think that you will let me participate , anyway i will not ask for i high pay anyting you give me will be ok i just want to add my view and my culture in Stargate , i am a businessman and fainancially secure .
i just wanted to Add some Cinnamon on your Show .
Take Care,
Dr. Mohammad Hatem Bahareth
I miss Ford, Weir, and Beckett as main cast members. I hope you can find a way to bring them back for good in the movie. Keller should move on. Wolsey should go back to the IOA. And well, everybody loves Ronan, so he should stay. Just my thoughts.
Thanks
Oh – Hey,
And since the show is over and who knows how many movies are coming – Can you please put Teyla and Sheppard together??!!! That would be wonderful!!!
That’s it – Thanks again.
What’s this I hear that the movie will not be made??
Dear Joe, I’ve only just found your blog so apologies if you’ve answered this a hundred times already, maybe hundred and one will be okay?
Can you please clear up the confusion of the SGA movie? I’ve read recently a post by D.Hewitt stating to his knowledge there is no movie, a script was written but it’s been dropped. Is this true? If so, why? The SGA fans would buy this in droves.
Again, apologies if you’ve answered this but I would really like a definitive answer.
Thank you.
Dear Joe,
just read your post from May ,3rd 2009 about SGC set on Stage 5.I´m asking myself if the set has changed so much,what are the plans for further SG-1 Movies?I don´t think you will reverse just for a Movie.Or will there be no shots inside SGC.
Sry for my bad English I´m from Germany but I hope you will answer my question.
Best regards
MoRRoW
Dear Joe,
I’m a British stargate fan and fan of science fiction generally and I’ve been reading your blog for a wee while now. One of the things I like about your blog entries are the insights you provide on producing Stargate, they are fascinating – keep up the good work!
I’m also a keen reader of books and I notice that you have read a heck of a lot of sci fi novels. To this end could you suggest a really good sci fi novel – something you’ve read and enjoyed? John Scalzi perhaps??
Thanks for reading!
Hey, I am a young new writer trying to get a foot in the door.. I am emailing people who I think are actaully great at there jobs, trying to get producer support for a project. I know you probably get this alot, and may not reply to this but if you have a few minutes sometime my concept is on the net and readily availible to read….
For SG1 there were two gates the SGC gateroom Gate. and offset, planet Gate. For SGA there was 1 actual physical gate, the physical atlantis gateroom one, where all gateshots on different planets were CGI. From the looks of universe their appears to once again be two gates. What sparked the drop, then rise in the number of physical gates used in filming?
The next SG1 movie was originally supposed to be direct to DVD, then air on the Sci-Fi channel, same as the last two. When the SGA movie was announced, it sounded like it would first air on Sci-Fi then goto DVD after a moderate amount of time. Now it sounds as though the Atlantis Movie will go straight to DVD then to Sci-Fi like the other movies. Is this correct and if so Why the change?
Question for Dave Blue
I read you were a huge SG fan to begin with,
1). We’ve all wanted to be a part of something we love. You actually got to do it. What is it like for you to be part of something you’ve been a fan of for a long time?
2). With your prior knowledge of the “Stargate Universe”….What was it like being the ‘tour guide’ for your fellow actors in this new universe introducing them to the lore?
3). When Actor Michael Shanks was onset, did you do the “Chris Farley SNL thing he used to do with Paul McCartney”…. and say things like “Remember that time when Daniel Jackson become a Prior….(wait for “Yup” response from M.S.)… That was cool.” or “Remember that time when Daniel Jackson died, again…(wait for “Yup” response from M.S.)… That was cool.”
Anyways… Best of luck on the new show, I’m counting the days!
Hey, have not heard or seen much of Ming-na and her character see any photos or news. How about an update on her (character, photos, etc)?
How about database of your food reviews? or at least a list of restaurants by city. I travel a lot and could use your referrals to good food.
PS hoping to hit michael chiarello’s bottega in 2 weeks.
Joe,
Why was the decision made to release the the priemiere episodes exclusively to the press (prior to the actual priemiere date) with a really cool looking cover where the Chevrons actually light up?
Considering that the shows producers have credited the series success to the fan base don’t you this may make some fans mad?
Joe, Thanks for the response, but you kind of missed the point of my inquiry.
I understand that press kits goto ‘the press’. But given that Stargate has gotten to where it is partially because of the fans, (and the other part being the creative staff like you), rather than due to press coverage, don’t you think that releasing these already highly anticipated episodes exclusively to the press to generate buzz, might be seen as a slap in the face to Stargate’s pre-established fanbase?
I personally couldn’t watch the SGU premier without sighing every few minutes. I thought this show might be okay because I am a fan of character interaction, and don’t need tons of action to be interested in a show. That is how the show was promoted. But, this show didn’t do it for me.
I miss Atlantis. I really liked those characters. And I wasn’t even a fan of some of the season 4-5 changes with the cast (Ford, Weir, and Beckett Rule!!), but it was way better than SGU. If people like SGU, more power to them. But, it’s definately not the show for me.
Joe, please write a great Atlantis movie to make up for this. The episodes with lots of charater interaction (especially seasons 1-3) on Atlantis were the best!!!
Hi Joe! I’m a newbie to your blog and have enjoyed it so far… only have been reading since the end of August/ early September.
I’ve been so excited to see SGU! My only real concern was that I kind of don’t have th SyFy channel (gasp!) and how was I to see the show?! Thank goodness On Demand is there to save the day! I see it, just 24 hours laters and mostly without commercials.
First impressions: as everyone was flying through the gate, I was wonder, “What the heck is going on?” Then I realized it was a present starting point and was right there with you. Before seeing Air III , I will be sure to watch the first one again just to get the main characters down… there are so many! I know Rush (already drives me nuts), Scott, Eli, and Chloe… and Greer. Oh, Greer… the problem child.
I am totally curious how you’re going to bring all the othe characters that were beamed up to Carter’s ship or who are on Earth. I’m buckled in and ready for the ride!
Alexi Murdoch sings/wrote Breathe. You can fnd his music in the recent movie- Away We Go. I have been on the fence about this one, but loved the song at the end of Air so now I want to see it.
Thanks for the intro to the artist. Who selected the song?
Love the blog!
is this where we post questions about the show? if so I have a question about an answer you gave.”
Isn’t there safety protocols that prevent this from happening? I believe this is how Teal’c got stuck in the Stargate?
had a question i brought up in another forum, hoping you could answer it.
Why don’t the planets they go to visit in SGU have different stargates? The gate on the Destiny is the ONLY gate that requires the 9th chevron address, and it doesn’t have a point of origin, so it makes sense that it has a unique gate. But then the gates in the galaxies should have a different gate from that on the Destiny, since they are used within the galaxy itself. Like Pegasus and Milky Way have their own gates.
By the way, I was a fan of SGA can’t wait for the movie
Is there any news on the sg-1 and atlantis movies, and is it true; that if Extinction succeeds the SGA series will be picked back up? Question 3: How would the Destiny know that 4 of the 5 available gates were dangerous? Can’t wait ’til friday
love the work you did on the remake of the Children of the gods
Hello,
I’m Charlie Mouttet i’m a French writter ,
I want found a screenplay of Stargate Atlantis , can you help me Please ?.
It’s maybe the bad moment for ask this question , if it’s right i’m so sorry .
Bye
Dark Zero: no, explosions translate through the gate still. Teal’c got stuck because the DHD was destroyed while he was in the gate’s buffer, prepared to be reintegrated.
Hello, I am a chef from Italy
What do you think, the better goaud curry or barbecue sauce?
^^ Try to eat that
May be it’s good
First off … truly excellent work on all the shows.
I am a writer, I’ve got some short stories, screenplays and teleplays under my belt, and would love nothing more than to work on a show like Stargate. However, I realize landing that job right out of the gate is unlikely. I was wondering if you had any advice on getting writing gigs and/or other odd jobs around a television production.
Thanks
Any ideas if Kavan Smith (Major Lorne SGA) has a Blog site any where. Please let me know – be very grateful.
Hey Joe, I just wanted to drop a line tell you that i’m really enjoying SGU. I am a huge fan of Atlantis. But after what i’ve seen online the last few days about Scott/Chole, I just wanted to let you know that there are people out there who get it. I glad that relationships are being shown in the show so early… and i think it sucks that people are being so judgmental and rude to all of you (cast and crew) about it… I guess i see it from a similar point of view to you… to some up, know that many, many people are on your side… best of luck and I’m pulling you all!
If it helps in any way, you and the Stargate family have an absolutely massive following in South Africa, and from what I’ve seen of SGU so far it may well be the very best series yet. I for one love that the writers are able to take the realm in a darker direction.
Isn’t it ironic how people whined for the better part of 10 years about SG1 NOT showing Carter and O’Neill involved in any sort of physical intimacy?
Damned if you do, huh
Hello Joe,
I came across your blog some months ago and have to admit, that I am now about to kind of “abuse” the opportunity to leave a comment. I looked for a way to draw the attention of someone involved in the stargate franchise to a couple of self-made vids, done by a forum member of RDA’s website. As to my knowledge they are not on Youtube or can otherwise be found without knowing the url to the website. There are a lot of videos out there and I have seen quite a lot of those, dealing with SG-1 in one way or the other. Some are “nice” or “well done”, but I did not get really impressed by them. But this member created some vids, that are just so – well, I am actually lacking an appropriate word to describe… It is just a perfect interplay of music, cuts, clip selection that as a result is transporting illusions and feelings to the viewer that I did not find in any other vids I have seen so far. This member is not a friend of mine – we just exachanged some emails and she gave me the link to her vids. So, this is not about doing someone a favour – she does not know about this. But when watching these vids, I got so impressed and immediately thought that it is a shame that none of the people involved in that show will ever see how much their doing has inspired others to become creative themselves – at least not in that almost professional way.
Now, I do have that little problem that I can not provide the link here in public, for I assume that there is a reason that she did not place her vids on youtube – and I also assume that this blog should not be used for placing links anyway. So, if you are interested in watching these vids (there are about 3-4 vids lasting 4-6 minutes, which I consider the best), please let me know, if there is a way to provide this link (or the vids, since she also sent me a download link when I asked) within a less public environment – maybe an email-adress, that is not your private one but you can access anyway. I can only assure that they are really worthwile watching – for I do not get impressed that easily
What makes you think that they really care about existing fans?
They destroyed two perfectly good shows, and brought in a show that’s aimed to get new viewers at the expense of existing viewers. They moved away from the very recipe that made SG-1 and SGA enjoyable (such as humor) and brought in, umm, sex and poor camerawork?
Does that sound like they care about loyalty?
No, this is disappointment at best.
Hello Joe,
I’ve followed the show for the better part of 10 years and never gotten involved in website discussions as I know how rude, stubborn and narrow minded people can be.
This morning however I was reading Maureen Ryan’s column from the Chicago Tribune and felt your seemingly well-bashed ears (or eyes) could do with a little soothing.
Frankly, considering SG1 ran for 10 years and Atlantis for 5, I fail to see how anyone(Maureen) can make up their minds regarding a new series by watching just 5 episodes and say you’re “pretty much done giving it a chance”. A new series has to be given a chance to set itself up regarding a long term plot & character relationships. This is not a movie where everything is eaten & digested in 2 hours. I don’t believe over the course of even a single season you can explore those things as well as answer all the ‘questions’ fans might want answered, which would leave nothing to the imagination. As a side effect, lack of rapid development maybe thought of as a slow start for any series.
I think Maureen and perhaps those who are new to the SG universe in general are very much over-analysing sexism and the use of sex and romantic relationships. These in my opinion, from Star Trek to Stargate and Star Wars have never played a large part in a Sci-fi series. Sci-fi fans tend more to enjoy the techno-babble, the ships, the action and the CGI. That is why it is Sci-fi, and not a soap-opera. This is proven given the success of SG1.
I happen to think the first 8 episodes so far have been a great start for SGU. I’m so pleased there wasn’t a big new enemy pointing its weapons array at the Destiny as soon as the crew boarded it. This is pretty much what happened with SG1 and Atlantis when they first started out and I remember being distinctly unimpressed with the Wraith. Humanity afterall cannot trek across the universe and fight everything thats out there.
The thing I do miss however is what Amanda Tapping brought to SG. A woman with a brain bigger than the whole team put together. Rodney was very funny in SGA with his completely over-the-top panicking during tense situations, but Tapping was just better.
Overall, I look forward to the rest of the series and wish Joe and the team every success.
I agree totally with your comments on how existing fans of SG-1 & SGA have & are being treated. Whilst I think that perhaps SG-1 might have run its course after 10 years I was a big fan of SGA & felt it still had years of potential left in it. Have watched all of the episodes of SGU so far shown here in the UK (must give it a fair chance), & with the exception of 2 episodes, I have found it rather dull & slow moving. Still perhaps things will liven up this week on the jungle planet. Please bring back SGA (re Morena 3 Oct – without Ford – I preferred Lorne) for existing fans. They’d really appreciate it. I know SGA & SGU could co-exist happily together on the networks as did SG-1 & SGA for 5 years. Don’t abandon these fans they’ve been loyal for years.
Hi I’m ok with you taking over a Universe as long as you stay cool and do not make every one worship you. I’m not the Jaffa type. I am a woman who has hand to hand and long bow combat training from the age of 4 thanks to my overprotective daddy. I learned how to shoot at the old age of 7 because my grandpa believed any one who did not know how to bring in some food for supper is a waste of stores in bad weather. So if you need a every ready marks-woman I’m on board ’till you turn tyrant.
I like the new direction Star Gate has taken please keep SGU about people flying through space and finding out about the ship and what it can do. I watched all the other Stargate shows and loved Teal’c and Ronin (what red blooded gal would not they are two supper hot men) but I think LT James and Sgt R Greer are just as KA tough if you give them enough screen time to work.
I never like everything about anything in SGU I am not connecting with Chloe. Maybe if she did Ti Chi instead of Yoga or did not whine about her boyfriend having sex when she and Scott do too. Oh well can’t win them all.
Be at peace as long as it is up to you.
I am something of a strategist myself, but I dout seriously you will need it. If you want to dominate the world, I am your man. Please be gentle tho as for laser rifles, done and done.
Hi Joe,
I wonder if you know how much bitterness there is to the new SGU series- and it can all be found on the SyFy web page. There is, I think, a very great chance that a loyal fan base built from the SG franchise could be lost- and very quickly at that.
I very much followed the SG1 and SGA series, and got bored with both towards the end of the series, sometimes ideas and characters start to fade. I was hoping that the new SGU series would take an interesting new path- it is definitely an interesting concept or vehicle to explore new concepts in SciFi.
Albeit, SGU is a big disappointment. Its is more like “General Hospital” in a rickety-dickety old space ship. I don’t mind the development of characters and inter-relationships, its that it is so badly done.
Perhaps the SGU people could get in some guest sci fi writers that have interesting ideas in science fiction: Iain Banks, Peter F Hamilton to name a few to keep things interesting?
I am now at a point that I have no interest in SGU, no longer watch SyFy since it is apparent it is on the slow slide to being just a fantasy channel with low budget series like ghost hunters.
With best regards, Timothy
ps., I really do like your work though.
please tell me that the rumour that there isn’t going to be a SGA film(s) isn’t true. just seen Stargate Continuum on Sci-Fi this week which I thoroughly enjoyed but it made me desperately want to see a return of the SGA series (or at least a film). please don’t betray the loyal SGA fans. or are the powers that be, hoping we’ll just give up and go away!? BRING BACK SHEPPARD, MACKAY, LORNE, TEYLA, BECKETT and MR WOLSEY (I can live without Ronin, Ford and Keller).
I’ve been a Stargate fan for ages and I’ll never miss an episode now that I’m retired from the USArmy and don’t have to go play in deserts anymore. It’s the only show I bother to watch on tv anymore, although I’m going to watch Caprica when it comes on next month being a big BSG fan too. I’m curious to see where you take SGU but I want to tell you up front, you need better music. I liked the way you used that “worst day since yesterday” song which
sort of sums up things so far, but I”m comparing the SGU opening theme with the themes from SG1 and SGA, and to be charitable, it sucks not quite as bad as a busted vacuum
cleaner. Get some better music. Joni Mitchell is Canadian. I know there are Canadians who can write decent music. It doesn’t surprise me that idiot shot himself. He was likely listening to your opening theme music. You don’t want your fans to kill themselves. When is Eli gonna figure out where
the Star Trek holodeck thingabob is on board? Ancient ships had something like that. Sure they did. Having fun is important for survival. Get them a USO show or something.
well i’ve watched the 10th episode and i’d have to say, i didnt
like any other episode but this one.
i wish they would have put the same amount of work and story into the
9 other episodes.
maybe sgu needs to be entirely restructured or just put to rest.
re: Jim in Texas email Dec 4 2009
I been thinking that the only really good thing about the 8 episodes of SGU I’ve seen so far WAS the music. I particularly liked the music used in the episode AIR and like you the way that the song “worst day since yesterday” was used in a later episode. I was also a BSG fan but haven’t heard of anything called Caprica here in the UK – more info please. I think there’s a lot of good films, series and actors (sorry can’t think of any good actresses at the moment) coming out of Canada at the present.
re: jas, email Dec 5
Going on the first half of the SGU season I agree with your last comment completely. Of course what they really need to do is bring back SGA, it was cancelled prematurely. It had a good few seasons viewing left in it with the right writers and if the main actors/actresses could be retained (i.e. Flanagan, Luttrell, Hewlett, Smith and Picardo).
What was there some conflict of – she is better looking than me so you guys dropped Andrea Palmer? She is attractive, offers science background, which is more than HR, Political Science, or Gunnery (Mammory) Officers. Don’t get me wrong, I love the ladies, but would love to see a new Samantha Carter Blossom. If you cannot bring back Andrea, try putting one of the ladies left behind in the chair. The show needs more than eye candy, it needs real science. If you can do do both – well, all the better. Andrea Palmer is attractive and smart. Would love to see her on more episodes.
I bought the very last Season 5 from Stargate Atlantis. The best one was: The shrine. That was wonderful. Dr. McKay is the coolest character ever! The other too, of course!
I want a season 6 of Stargate Atlantis! I don’t care what it is about – I just want to see my favourite TV Show again!
Who dosen’t want another season?
Check out this comic for SG1 et al humor
If you are viewing this after December 21, then look for the comic that came out 12/21/2009
Where is this “mailbag” of which you speak?? Or are you answering questions from the Comments section? I want (several more) Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis movies! SGU is going well…getting its footing…but the others are great.
Please Joe , do you know when SGU will be come in Belgium, Swiss or France ?
Interesting question about where the different gates get their energy. Has that not been addressed, yet, or is it just a matter of when and how such details would be shown for dramatic purposes?
What about Zero Point Energy, potentially an ‘any time, any where’ kind f Martini energy resource? Would imagine that the Ancients had sussed this and then some, so maybe it isn’t enough, at least alone, or there are caps on such use, either deliberate or due to faults in the old ship.
Wondering, too, about how the energy source fits with the non-hyperspace FTL tech.
Also, as the gate tech is wormhole-based, might there be other wormhole type technology on the ship apart from the Stones (that link to Earth), eg for scanning, sampling or even siphoning off energy without the vessel having to high-tail it to a star, though that is so good…?
Great stories. Great blog. Thanks
Can you say if aiden ford gonna come back in the Stargate atlantis Extinction? or did he die in the wraith ship? i have wondered so long now
and now you are finish with the script, can you please say if we gonna se him in the movie.
i cannot wait for the movie to be released.
thanks!
Hey Joe!
I was wondering if there have ever been any Welsh flags on Atlantis personnel. I’ve never spotted any.
People from the UK are all Britons by law so to speak, but we can then go further to chose our identity as a nation/principality, as I’m sure you know. Carson chose a Scottish flag for his patch whilst Grodin and others have opted just for a Union Jack so it seems instead of an English one. The English are often content with identifying as just British whilst the Scots and the Welsh often have a proud sense of independance (Scotland considerably more).
Because Wales has already got some Stargate airtime (Daniel Jackson mentioned a past visit to Wales where he learnt the language, I forget which episode now, along with all the Arthurian stuff of course), I was wondering if you could PLEASE just hint that at least SOMEONE on the Atlantis Expedition identifies as a Welshman!
I would love to see the Welsh dragon on the side of an extra walking past in the control room!
Yours,
Mr. Jones
Hey Joe,
I was hoping to ask a question about SGU but was unsure where to post. Feel free to move/remove this post if you want.
My question is: Will SGU be getting a main title seqence similar to SG-1 and Atlantis in the second half of the season?
Thanks a lot Joe,
Peter.
bring the Furlinger to SG Universe u told about them in SG-1 where Onei´ll meet Thor first Time on Asgard Planet.
It seems like there alot of people in hollywood show business that are like Jerry and his girlfriend from that Seinfeld episode where they’re like “you’re smoopie, no you’re schmoopie, no you’re schmoopie” or that couple from highschool when talking on the phone are like “you hang up, no you hang up, no you hang up.”
Does it ever get that way in Vancouver or on the set of Stargate? Doesn’t ever get annoying? How do when people are giving you an honest complement versues and ego massage.”
Since the stones are in play on SGU why have we not seen McKay, Carter or Lee on the ship helping to fix it? Is there a final destination for the ship or will the ship get turned around and head back to Earth? If there is a final destination, was there advance ships, like the ones sent to build gates, sent to build a city or out post? Casting on Young and Rush should have been better in my mind, Eli needs to be more tech savy, TJ and Lt. Scott have to be stronger.
World domination eh?… Sounds good… I call dibs on pushing the button….
oh wait… lasers… pft… forget you… i have my nuon particle beam rifle… much more powerful… along with a bomb I have yet to think of a name of that bends the space time continuom around it as it goes until it detonates… very pretty when it does actually, but some nasty side effects… anyways, Ill go in on the world domination part until that’s accomplished… then we must part…
Hi to all S.G. fans and cast. This is the first time I have commented on any web site. Yes i’m a Virgin, (to the internet) I have been a fan of all the Stargate adventures and enjoy the way you can drift off into your own reality. One day I started to write down my own S.G. ideas till in the end I had my own story. Now I would like to know who to send it to?????
If any one out there can help I would apprieciate thier Knowledge.
Hi to all SG fans! I’m a Long-time SG fan; I am really happy to be here posting my first comment and I cannot wait to watch the new season of SGU.
Actually, I wish my comment could just end here with a happy greeting. However, I have discovered something that is absurd recently and strange and I really need to confirm the issue. Apparently, there is a Hong-Kong based movie producer made a Sci-Fi/ Action movie called “Future X-Cops.” Well, I have not yet seen the movie but I found something that made me very angry.
In this movie’s promoting posters, I have found several pictures in which they took the Pegasus Stargate design into their own and just ran with the production.
(Please refer to the following links)
(Comparison between the original Pegasus gate and the object used in Future X-Cops.)
http://0rz.tw/izeYc
(Another shot of the object in question. Please pay attention to the upper right corner in order to see the object.)
Actually, I wish my comment could just end here. However, I have discovered something
I do not know if any personnel associated with Stargate franchise ever sign a contract or an agreement authorizing this Hong-Kong based movie producer to use the gate. If he has been given the right to use it, then I apologize for your time and please just ignore my post. However, if the producer has never been given any right to use the gate, then I believe we need to expose this total RIP-OFF.
I came here to post because I know there are thousands of SG fans and some respectful figures associated with SG series here. As a SG fan, I rally hate to see the work of SG production team being rip-off by others. Thus, please help confirming this issue and see what exactly is going on…
(Again, I apologize if my post ever upset visitors to this page.)
This is random but, the other night I was watching the special features on the SG1 Season 9 DVDs and came across a director’s profile for Crusade featuring Robert Cooper. He was mentioning how his dream to be a director came about after his father took him to see Jaws when he was a kid and it scared him. Then he knew he wanted to be in control of that kind of that power to effect people’s lives.
I had a similar revelation when my parents took me to see Jurassic Park. I was up that night plotting out my sequel to the film. Even since then I knew I wanted to be a storyteller in film or TV. Now, all I need is someone to hire me to dispense all those warped stories stuck in my head.
How do I get to do what you do for a living? It’s not fair I am so jealous!
No seriously how?
Please tell me, i promise not to tell anyone else
I just wanted to take a moment and say thanks for recommending Refuel so highly. I’ve read your blog daily for years and enjoy the details of your work and your food adventures. I am visiting a friend in Seattle and we decided to spend a day in Vancouver. Despite having lived and traveled around the world, I had never been to Canada and have always wanted to see Vancouver. I insisted we go to Refuel and order the duck, and oh my god, are we glad we did. Excellent meal to top off an excellent day. So I guess I traveled from Maryland to Vancouver for dinner. Thanks again!
I will not go around telling you how big a fan I am, but I thought you should know that I have written a StarGate Universe episode, and I wonder if you are interested in knowing more?
Does the Stargate Universe series have any underlying Jungian theme? I began to be curious when I noticed that the ship is named destiny and shaped like a pendulum. Also, the the name Young is remarkably similar to Jung, there is a psychological bent to the show, and there’s a host of other rich layers. Please tell me I’m not delusional.
Thanks,
Joel
Leif – due to legal reasons, Joe can’t accept anything from fans or from people who aren’t officially employed by the company.
Just say he does read your eppy but decides not to use it.. later you might find something in a future episode that might seem like your idea which runs the risk of you suing for plagiarism… get the point??
Hope that makes sense.
Hi Joseph. You probably get this a lot but what would it take for someone like you to have a look at my show bible andpilot script for an original sci-fi show I have been working on these last few years. I hope to hearback from you. P.S. You’re brilliant.
Cheers
Josh
Joshua, read my comment above – it applies to you too.
Maybe you miss understood. I asked what would it take as in trying to find out a way it is possible. For example learning what agent Joseph has so as to possibly get representation from the same agent. I am not saying to get him directly to read my stuff but a way to one day possibly talk to him about it through the correct channels. Would you know what agent or manager he uses? Because I am trying to find one.
Joe’s freelance as far as I know. Rather than ask him in the ‘about’ section, ask him in his blog. He doesn’t bite (unless you’re a block of 70% dark chocolate)
I from Russia and very much love a serial. I even have created the site about StarGate Universe
hi joe great site was just wondering i am a massive Stargate fan and enjoying the new series but was wondering if the blue looking aliens in SG:U was going to be back and will we find our more about the race who built the planet also any idea if Stargate fans will get to meet the furlings i do think after nearly 20 years of stargate on our TVs we could finaly meet them pls if u have the time can u send me a email thanks all the best daniel
Mr Mallozzi,
I am a typical viewer who will watch any TV show with good storyline and big budget.
I liked Stragate SG1 due to its intriguing story line and reference to mythologies. I liked Stragate Atlantis due to its cinematic quality and it was an epic.
Unfortunately, as a viewer, I found Stargate Universe very dull and slow moving DRAMA; with liner and predictable storyline. The first few episodes about Food, Air, Water and Sex were so obvious and did not necessitate 45 minutes long five to six episodes.
Even though I took out a HD subscription for SyFy in anticipation of Stargate Universe, I have stopped watching the show after 4th episode due to lack of any action.
Please let me know whether future Stargate Universe episodes will focus less on drama and more on Sci Fi (as my satellite subscription is due for renewal soon)
Thanks
Hi
I was just wondering if for a new plot idea that somewhere in your series that you might like to [edit]
Kat.
[sorry, Kat. I can't post or accept any story ideas or pitches here.
Joe]
Hi!
Was hapend with the sga movie? Any news? Is it a site there i can get the latest info on? Will it be a movie or not?
Hi. I am a scientist, a physicist specifically, as well as being a longtime fan of the Stargate shows. I just wanted to say thank you for doing such a great job with your shows especially with the scientists’ dialogue being accurate (most of the time) but still entertaining.
Hi joe
cheers for that. I Like all series and the original movie heaps! I have something to add to what you edited so if you want to email me please feel free.
Kat
Hello Joe,
I have been a long time fan of the Stargate series and I must say you did a very good job with the franchise.
Anyways, I am a modder. A video game modification specialist which is of course, free. Recently, I have been working on a Stargate mod for a game in which a player has control over a BC 304 (also made F 302′s). Well that’s all fine and dandy but I have to make the skin of these models on screen shots taken from the shows. This presents a challenge because some of the ship always appears too dark to see the fantastic features of the ship. To cut this paper short, I’ll cut to the chase.
Can you…
A. make longer shots with a BC 304 in or out of combat with good lighting and some nice views?
B. release the skin you guys use to make it? Its resolution would be reduced because I don’t think a lot of computers can handle the detail but none the less, it would be exponentially more accurate than anything I could make.
Thanks,
-Joe
Hi Joseph. I love your work in Stargate! But a question has been on my mind since “Incursion” in Stargate Universe… Why didnt they just but a large object inside the gate to prevent the Lucian Alliance from dialing in?
- Huge Stargate Fan
Alex,
They would have had to put a very large, very specify shaped object in the gate to prevent an incoming wormhole. It would have to fill the entire ring exactly, like the original cover stone or the equivalent of burying the gate. Otherwise, the wormhole would connect and the kawoosh would destroy any object left in the way of the event horizon formation.
An iris for the Destiny gate would be great, but I doubt they have the necessary equipment to place something exactly three microns away from the event horizon. Also I doubt there is anything like that lying around, it seems the Alternans didn’t worry about evil incoming travelers until after they left the Milky Way, settled in Pegasus and had the Wraith to deal with.
Hmmm didnt know that it had to fully fill the ring.. thought it just had to be large…there goes that idea…
As far as I know that is the case, I don’t think we have seen anything like it specifically on the show. However, from what has been shown about how to stop incoming wormholes, the logic one would follow would lead to the idea that anything lying in the path of the event horizon and the subsequent kawoosh would be disintegrated.
I’ve been thinking more about uses for stargates partly because I’m part of a research group that is actually working on the theoretical and experimental foundations of the physics behind both stargate/wormhole travel and impulse drives. Both types of technologies take advantage of what is called the Mach Effect to extract momentum from the local gravinertial field for propulsion without propellant, and at the same time be able to generate Alcubierre warp drive or complete wormholes by using similar devices to strip the gravinertial mass of electrons so that their extreme negative rest mass is exposed, allowing the negative mass to be used to generate warps and wormholes.
Yeah, if you don’t know what I’m talking about, thats all a lot of armwavium….
Anyways, because of our work, I’ve been thinking about the uses of these technologies other than their obvious uses.
Firstly, using impulse thrusters arranged in a ring and attached to an electric generator to extract momentum out of the local gravinertial field means the ability to generate power from the zero point field… i.e. ZPMs
Secondly, I’ve solved the question about why all stargated planets look like British Columbia. The answer is that the Ancients had an early problem with their early stargate tech, in that if the atmosphere between the two ends of a stargate wormhole was different, you’d get air (or water if one is under water) flowing through the wormhole. They invented a force field to prevent this eventually, but the SG folks should be able to turn this off and use stargates to terraform like the Alterans did.
How, you ask? Ok lets say you want to make Mars and Venus like Earth. First you set up a stargate on Mars, and another on Venus. You open a wormhole between them. Venus high pressure atmosphere streams through to Mars, until you either close the wormhole, or the atmospheres equalize. So you can then give Mars a 1 earth pressure atmosphere (which at this point is now mostly CO2), and with the introduction of plant life forms, they will convert the CO2 into O2, as well as extracting nitrogen from the ground, etc. You could also extract ammonia from a gas giant planet to give the planet more nitrogen quicker.
You then need to vent most of the rest of Venus’ 92 atmospheres of pressure (which I’ll discuss later here in the bottom few paragraphs on propulsion)
So you see what I’m saying.
This process is also how the seeder ships terraform planets they come across: they first equalize the atmosphere of the target planet with a few stargates, then introduce plant life, etc.
You should have Rush or Eli figure out how to replenish the air of Destiny via the stargate, have Eli figure out how to turn off the force fields on each gate so air can flow freely through the gate.
The Stargate is also how the seeder ships propell themselves at sublight speeds. See, Impulse drives are nice but they don’t produce a whole lot of thrust.
If you have a stargate in a high pressure atmosphere and link it to a gate on the back end of your seeder ship, then the seeder ship stargate will expel that atmosphere like a rocket engine into the vacuum of space, giving it very high thrust. Given a large enough jovian planet as a source, this is nearly a limitless supply of propellant, and should allow you to reach near light speed over a years acceleration.
If you want to research the Mach Effect more, you can google that term, as well as Dr. Jim Woodward, who heads our research team.
Do you know, the creators of the series universe. A civilization that created the planet. Flew to the ground before? It was on Earth?
I LIKE the character Mckay and David Hewlet, TOO!!!
I to see him in SGU.
>> WHO WANT TO SEE HIM TOO, SAYS DAVID FOR SGU <<
(For copy: "<>” )
Hi Joe,
Huge fan of all three franchise! I was wondering if you could tell me the songs that you guys have used for the montages on sgu?!?!? I’ve really enjoyed all of the music, but can’t find what the names of them or who they are by. Thanks!
Robyn
Hi. I have a question. How do you wanna explain, in the SGU series,that the Naquadria, element, artificially created by Goauld, is occurs naturally on the two planets(Ikarus and that Lucian planet),that are thousands of light years from Kelowna, or Langara if you wont?
PS:I am sorry for my english. I am a fan from Czech republic.
Hi Mr. Mallozzi.
I have a detailed proposal for a new stargate series that might be beneficial to the continuation of the genre. Do you want me to upload the proposal letter here on the blog website or to another location?
Thank you
Hey sgcatlantis,
I had this question early on as well. I’m assuming they realized the issue and have a way to deal with it. The easiest explanation would be that Thanos (the Goa’uld who developed the naquadria on Langara) had tried his experiment on other plants before coming to Langara. Or perhaps, it would make sense he wasn’t the only Goa’uld doing research on the substance giving it great potential.
Well how I had assumed the naquadria situation was that since the Goa’uld were tech thieves in general and they took alot of tech from the ancients, the system lord that did the naquadria research had just stolen the idea and some of the information from the Ancients’ records. But in reality the ancients themselves had originally designed the naquadria. Which I think makes since because isn’t Ikarus supposed to have been a planet of the ancients?
Joseph, can you tell me more aboat the SGU’s second season. I really can’t wait for it. And please tell me if the blueberry aliens from episode “Space” will appear again.
already added you to my wordpress hope you don’t mind.
nice blog! also a fan of SGA.
Dear Joseph,
I’m so glad to finally write to you! I’ve long been employing thousands of questions on the Stargate series. But all that I’ve not asked anyone these questions. Now, finally here’s my chance. I could hardly decide what to ask first. Then finally I decided to ask that for years myself, I can’t be restored. These issues are related to Jolinar of Malkshur, although she has long since died in the Stragate: SG-1 series, but I feel that these things are still unclear even return. My questions are therefore as follows:
1. Jolinar said before her death, she rounded on one of the system lords, but she lost a fight against him, her army was massacred, and she was forced to flee. When and where did this happen? Why Jolinar turned against him? Who was the system lord who Jolinar betroyed?
2. Many fans belives that Jolinar was a Goa’uld originally, and she only later joined the Tok’ra. Is it truth? Or Jolinar had been always Tok’ra?
3. Why did Cronos want to kill Jolinar?
4. If Jolinar once really was a Goa’uld, what was the role of Jolinar, when she was Goa’uld? And since when is she member of the Tok’ra?
For now that’s just me now come into my mind. I hope it’s not bad that I asked these questions. Maybe you can answer them. Thank you for all your trouble!
Postscript: English is not my mother tongue. That’s why if you find some mistakes, I’m sorry.
Hi Joe!
World domination?! You must be kidding me! With all the galaxies out there (Milky Way, Pegasus, Ori etc.), you settle for just one lousy planet? And to make things worse – our planet? Common! There is a bunch of better places out there!
It seems that there are some things that I like too and we could talk about. I like nice walks too (sadly I must settle for parks and the river bench), books, SF, haute (and not so haute) cuisine and, yes, world domination (although, as mentioned, I try to not forget the big picture here).
Honest? Yes I am. I think this is a crucial quality for somebody with world domination dreams. Intelligent? Well even the fact that we think about world / galaxy / universe domination is a clear sign of intelligence, I mean you have to be either really dumb or really smart to want to take on the whole world and I refuse to think I could be the former. And yes, I’m pretty good with guns; although I personally prefer short guns (like pistols), I’m good with riffles too.
So if you want to talk about the last book you read, change recipes or go through world domination plans, write me.
Eddie
I have 5 minutes to write something here or else I’d be considered a liar…
I’m going to be honest, Mr. Almond Milk man, I have yet to start reading your blog because I’m dead tired and I STILL have work to do for my other job. BUT, at least you know that I have searched for your blog and I WILL read it as soon as AE (anime evolution- a convention here in Vancouver) is done and my boss has less work me to do.
So please… do not throw your milk, honey yogurt or whatever it is that you will buy, at me. Hopefully this is the right blog…
Thank you and Good night.
Mr Mallozzi, I’ve got an idea about an SG… follow-up.
{edit. Sorry. Legal issues prohibit me from reading unsolicited pitches. Joe]
I can share the ideas with you. Get in touch with me if you are interested.
Dear Mr Mallozzi, let me know the way I have to submit my scenario for an eventual follow-up for the SG series. I will appreciate if you reply to my private email. Best. Aurel.
Hi there.
Hi, mr. Mallozzi!
Is there a chance to see a minute intro in second season of SGU?
Hello,
I am a fan French of Stargate and I am very impatient to see the film of Stargate Atlantis. I would like to know if it will be released and if yes when?
Thank you in advance for your response.
Do you remember in atlantis when Col. Caldwell opened fire on the hive ship right when its hangar opened? Can I call that “The Caldwell Maneuver”? You know like in Star Trek with “The Picard Maneuver”? I just need you to write something on your blog saying sure call it that. Then I can make A Wikipedia page called “the Caldwell Maneuver” and site your blog as a source. Then maybe years and years from now when there actually are space battles maybe the military will call it that. Cmon you know this sound fun.
Joe,
I’m glad to see some excitement in the season 1.5, and the beginning of season 2.0. I was not very optimistic when Brad Wright said the second half of season 1 would silence all critics.
That being said, and given the time that has passed since the premeir or Air, is there anything you and the other producers would have done differently? I know alot of fans took the preparations made as a slap in the face. Comments made like “SGU is stargate for smart people”, and comments about stargate fans being “disgruntled”, and the producer’s attempt to gain a new audience, at the expense of its existing fan base (intentionally or unintentionally).
I realize you can’t please all of the shows viewers and fans, and even attempting to do so if futile. But don’t you think you could at least acknowledge this. I realize you and the rest of the shows creators needed to grow in the type of story to tell, but it came off to alot of existing fans as a slap in the face, and seemed alot like you and the other producers were on your high horse.
After all this time has your perspective changed any?
-Joe
Is RDA going to be making any sort of appearance in any SGU episode, either planned or produced already?
my question is how is the stargates seeded by the gate seeding ship powered because its established that for the most part the milky way and Pegasus stargates are powered by there corresponding D.H.Ds? will this information be explaned eventually on sgu?
Hi there, just yesterday I had a thought- It´s about that artificial planet- It would not be that difficult to make provided some raw materials are present-
hydrogen nebula and a star system close by housing an Earth size rock.
Use Asgard tech developed to collapse stars to create a star (which can be done quite quicly) and then same tech to slingshot that uninhabitable in right direction… if he speed diferential is made high enough everything can be done in a decade at maximum.
And gate seeding ships would never know as they would have already passed.
Hi Mr Mallozzi
Its been bugging me for ages but how do the seed ships get the resources off the planets and onto the ships to create the gates?
thanks,
Daniel
Paeis, You make some good points about the artificial planet … And hell if they’ve got Asgard tech they could even put the entire solar system in a time bubble and speed it up tremendously.
Daniel, I have no idea for sure, but I think the seed ships brought everything they needed with them.
Why does TJ wear earings? Normally this goes against regs for on duty Military personell. I heard that SGU has a military consultant, is this True? Why was the decision made to haver her wearing them anyway?
I noticed in Visitation that there were two guys from the Eden planet other than caine, peter and kwan, one presumably being norris. who was the other guy?
Hi Joseph, I regularly watch for yours a blog.
Unfortunately English language I understand through a word.
Would like to learn, whether exit SGU 3 season is planned?
Hello,
It’s a pity for SGU that began to become interesting. I hope that there will be all the same the end during the season 2. I also hope that there will be quickly the end for Stargate Atlantis.
Kind regards,
Raphaël, a French fan of Stargate.
So very disappointed to see that SGU has been cancelled. It was so well regarded up here, I never even realized it was in real trouble.
What are the possibilities of it being picked up for another season by the likes of SPACE?
Seriously, it seems that practically all of SyFy’s programming was produced up here anyway. Is it simply a money issue? Could Canada’s ratings alone justify CTV/SPACE taking this over? Or possibly in colaboration with BBC/SKY??
Looks like this will truly be the end of “Adult” Sci-Fi.
Thanks for trying Joe!
I am so saddened by the prospect of losing one of the best science fiction shows that I’ve ever seen. Stargate Universe was awesome from its first episode. Despite many outspoken voices that this show didn’t meet the franchise’s fan expectations, this show rose above the campiness of previous SG creations. To me, this was real science fiction, as was written during the golden age of Sci-fi, of the 1960′s and 70′s.
I greatly respected the writing, acting, and production values of the show. Additionally, the pacing and attention to detail was very appealing to me. The characters felt real, and the situation presented by being marooned on an ancient vessel, set on a course that they had no control over, was intriguing. Of note: Just as in real life, the reality is that not everything can be fixed by pushing a button- and not all problems can be solved in an hour’s time- made SGU better than its predecessors.
I hope that 2011 brings some good news about the continuation of SGU. Thanks for all you do Joe.
[...] Recently the show’s executive producer, Joseph Mallozzi responded to fan questions on his blog. There may still be a slim chance that the franchise can be saved. While SyFy has chosen not to [...]
Hey Joe,
Happy new year to you! You’ll have to excuse my comment post being rather long! Most of it you’ve probably heard already, some of it you know better than anyone else, but there’s something to be said about strength of numbers. And if numbers are good to get the attention of networks and supporters to show there is interest in the franchise, then I am doing my job as a fan.
I’m sort of a new Stargate fan. I saw SG1 and Atlantis time to time on TV, but never really watched it seriously until Stargate Universe started airing (which I have DVRed every episode). I got fed up with the broken timeline SG1 and SGA were shown in TV, so in November of 2009 I picked up the complete series of SG1 and SGA, and have since watched SG1 seasons 1~8 twice, and Atlantis once. Last month I picked up SGU season 1 on bluray. Having it on DVR is no excuse to not buy it on disc! If only everyone thought like that!
I’ve been keeping up on the news with Stargate since I heard SGU was being canceled. Honestly, I’m not all that shocked. Not saying SGU was the issue as much as the network that was chosen is to blame. Anyone can see it’s as clear as day that SyFy has no interest in sci-fi anymore as they cater to masses now. They might as well be the Ghost Hunters Network, with a side order of wrestling and cooking. I understand from a business point of view you guys needed financial backing, but in the long run, it was like accepting backing from ESPN to air the show after college football. Wrong place, wrong time.
As for SGU going in a new direction, I can see understand why hardcore Stargate fans might feel lost with the SGU. SG1 and SGA were always composed of 4 man teams that made the show. The previous shows left story direction open, where Universe kills (sometimes literally) every plot it gets.
Anderson, Shanks, Tapping, and Judge made SG1 what it was. I should definitely include Don Davis in that list though, as Beau Bridges really ruined the role he had imo (same with Browder was NO replacement for Anderson, and Nemec couldn’t replace Shanks even if Shanks was never born). In fact, I disliked the changes with the cast and story so greatly, that I managed about 10 episodes of season 9, before skipping to the final episode of season 10 to see the Asgard’s final moments.
SGA being comprised of Flanigan (that man deserves the Uncharted movie role btw), Luttrell, and Momoa made Atlantis. Yes, I left out Hewlett, only because his character was the most narcissistic neurotic character to ever walk through a Stargate. Such a being could only be rivaled by the love child of Anubis and Coombs.
SGU on the other hand, lacks that solid 4 man team. Yes, the cast of SGU is great. Carlyle, Ferreira, Blue, Brian Smith, Jamil Smith, and Huffman are great. The rest of the cast imo has been and still is expendable. However, the way these characters interact with each other is more along the lines of a soap opera than the Stargate teams people have come to know and love. I’ll come back to this point…
In terms of plot, SG1 constantly left new plots to build on. Simply introducing Apophis adds a show. Daniel bringing up the fact there must be other Goa’uld posing as gods also added for future plot lines. Teal’c wanting to free Jaffa from slavery was a plot. The discovery of the Stargate addresses was a mother load of story to build on. The discovery of the Asgard (and O’Neill with 2 L’s! being told the first step to being the 5th race), meeting the Tollan (and that a comm device was left with Carter), and as much as I hate to mention it, the NID, all added story to build on. Atlantis started off with a whole hive waking up, and Atlantis being a busted up city in need of being explored, while the Stargate was used to explore and make allies and find supplies.
SGU however has failed imo to bring alot that to the table. Granted, yes, Destiny has had plot. Getting the ship in running order (done in a rather slow way though you must admit), constant struggle for control between the military, IOA, and for a brief moment, the Lucian Alliance. The ocassional encounter with aliens, or the overplayed “We’re not gonna make it! Meet you at the next Stargate!”
There’s the dragged on plot with Chloe, whom at this point is such a dull character I wouldn’t miss her. Short of being a tool for Rush and a bed buddy for Scott, the character has had no redeeming value other than perhaps a pretty face. Just as something between Eli and Ginn was taking hold, you guys killed the plot. The story with Young, his wife, TJ and Telford was short lived and more fit for a drama series. The plot with TJ’s baby however was used too soon. It could have been left open ended and revisited much later.
The plot with Rush trying to get control of the ship is there, but aside from talking to himself like a schizophrenic, the science of what he’s been doing is left out. These were things that made Carter and McKay as characters. They explained what they were doing while somebody else would say “shut up, use small words!” for short and dumbed down explanation.
Now, I have to say, despite all this, Stargate Universe has been very much enjoyable. If you are not able to adapt and accept the changes made in the franchise, the above is most likely entirely true. However, as a fan of anime and gaming, I know change happens, and happens more often than Stargate has changed. The fact you guys ran 15 years with the same system is not just incredible, it’s a testament to the strength of the franchise.
Stargate Universe has brought to the table a new concept. A darker Stargate series, that is much more about struggle and survival than its predecessors. Instead of a closed group to direct the show, the cast is much wider and character development is handled more like a drama series, and in ways what I suppose would be expected in a real life situation. We talk about sending people on a one way trip to Mars in 20~30 years, and yet some of these very issues could happen in such a real mission.
The series if you are into the Ancients (which I definitely am!) pre dates anything previously discovered, and the inclusion of the gate seed ship leaves much potential in the story about how Stargates got where they are. However, it would have to be a carefully told story considering that the stargates used in SGU are not the same as those found in the Milky Way galaxy (and Ida galaxy btw… hello, “The Fifth Race” episode stargate is the same type!) or the Pegasus galaxy, and yet the Ancients were the gate builders. You wouldn’t want to go saying the seed ship has been dropping these nice looking stargates all over the known universe for the Ancients to travel to without trying to explain “Well, they didn’t like the blue lights so much at first after sending the seed ships, so they went for a low tech look and made these thick gates with Naquadah, orange lights and DHDs… But that didn’t work out either, so they moved to the Pegasus galaxy and decided go with blue lights again, force fields, and a high tech dialing system!” Well, that or perhaps I’m just wondering why change in the gates at all in terms of story. Location? Resources? Advancements in the gates? Or is it just a matter of iGate vs Droidgate vs Windowsgate (same gate, different mfg?)? Already understood why it’s done as a franchise.
SGU’s core cast is excellent. Most of the characters are fun to watch interact in their given settings. Carlyle plays a deceptive mad scientist who would do anything to see his personal mission carried out with brilliance. I have moments where I wouldn’t be shocked if it turned out he was some ex rogue NID scientist. Blue plays with perfection a dream job ala smart kid turned Last Starfighter in a way that almost makes me jealous I’m not the one playing the character. Jamil Smith, plays perhaps my favorite character as the man who would do anything to protect his fellow soldiers and the security of his people (civilians included). He does it so well I could almost imagine he’s a bit like that in real life. Ferreira does an exceptional job with Young as does Huffman with TJ.
Admittedly, the first season did drag on in a sense. Watching it week to week, the pace felt slow, and the radical new direction was sort of hard to understand. Outside of the use of the stargate and comm stones, I might as well been watching a whole new franchise. By the end of the first season I was left with a slightly bitter taste in my mouth, wondering what in the world were you guys thinking. Then I have to stop, take a deep breath and remember, this change of direction was intentional. When you stop to realize this, the first season while starting off slow, did pick up and got better.
Then you guys kicked off the second season. The damage already done, viewer rating already down, and SyFy moving the show to Tuesday night (that imo doomed it, which is why I was not shocked to hear the show was canceled), it probably had a tough time. The second season did what the first season didn’t though. It launched the shows direction and became much more tense. Yes, constant plot directions were killed (almost with malice), and the boring drama of Chloe (sorry, but she’s like the teenage tv show element that needs to go) dragged on. There was more power struggle, and more character conflict like before, but it was beginning to get interesting.
Then poof… The SyFy channel took a Hatak mothership to you guys and the show gets canceled. True, viewers and fans of the franchise are also to blame, as is all the technology we have in our homes now. SG1 was warned about advancements, and here we are… DVRs and the internet are wreaking their own havoc. I would blame the Asgard for giving us everything at the end of season 10 (which was probably right around the time we started seeing DVRs huh?), but… That would just be silly! Then again, what is Stargate without some good old metaphors and clichés?! Or over the top theatrical drama for that matter! Which in the end, the whole cancellation of SGU has created just that… Drama.
It sucks for you guys who created the series, it sucks for the cast and crew, and it sucks for the fans.
I like many am hopeful that somebody will pick it up. I imagine it’s a process that if it does happen will take a few months. Months that do damage as you guys are on hold instead of filming and people being paid. Still, even a few months would be better than canceled entirely I would think! I find it hard to imagine other networks aren’t interested, but with the history of the show on SyFy I imagine that could be a damaging blow. With 17 seasons and a couple of movies behind it though, I find it hard to imagine they can’t recognize Stargate is a force to be reckoned with as far as franchises go. You mentioned it has died down some, which makes me wonder why… Was it the removal of the original core Stargate was built on, did the fans just move on?
It’s not like there’s a new true sci-fi series like a new Star Trek to even attempt to compete. The few sci-fi shows that existed on SyFy are gone. TV being loaded with worthless reality tv, competition shows, crime shows, and paranormal hysteria, one would think a network would love to pounce on a show genre that others don’t really have. I suppose it could be said that TV sci-fi is dying (and kind of has been), however sci-fi is NOT a dead genre. If one were to look at gaming for example, sci-fi does very well (Mass Effect, Halo), and sci-fi movies are anything but dead (hello?!? Avatar! Biggest movie ever!).
Regardless, I have written 10x more than I ever intended, and shall cut it off here. I would be more than willing to keep going if provoked to do so, but to continue for the sake of continuing right now would be pointless! If you’ve actually read all of this, you have my thanks for your time.
Have a good new year, and I hope probably almost as much as you and the cast and crew do, that the show will go on!
~ Dan
Hello, I would ask one question about the TV license, can give license to other television series Stargate instead of Syfy? It could be another TV to give you a license to strip? Thank you for your answers.
Wow, Dan, that was a long read for a “comment” but I am in complete agreement with every point you made. I stopped by Joseph’s blog because I wanted to see if there was a similar sentiment among other SG fans about the direction SGU took. I was extremely excited during the first few episodes of SGU, but I quickly became disinterested in it as there was more of an apparent focus on drama rather than the foundation of the SG story that has been built all these years through SG1 and SGA. I understand that they wanted to go in a different direction and was excited to see what they would do, but rather than just a different heading, this was a complete turn around. In my humble opinion, having seen every single episode of SG1, SGA, SGU, and all the movies to date, the added drama and lack of focus on what made the Stargate franchise what it is, is what killed SGU. (Syfy’s confounding moves didnt help either) Also I saw too many similarities between SGU and Battlestar Galactica that SGU started to seem like a sequel to BG rather than SG1/SGA. Speaking of Battlestar Galactica, I loved that show too until they introduced the drama (to appeal to women more?) and slowed down the storyline. That killed my interest in the series and I never finished it, probably never will. Please Joseph, you guys can do so much more, better, than you are with SGU so far.
That’s my two cents.
SGU Soundtrack (Joel Goldsmith)
Joe,
Besides being really sad over the news of SGU being cancelled. I can still be a happy man if the SGU Soundtrack is released.
If you look on youtube I’m not the only one that loves the music in the series.
Please let me know if there’s a chance… iTunes download would be perfect.
I am so sad SGU got canceled. I am even more saddened by the death of the making of the SGA movie. I am keeping my fingers crossed for SG: Revolution. Stargate can never die! I love my space shows and believe that SGU was just starting to get really good. So bummed. I do have a question about the plot of Revolution though… Will Sam and Jack FINALLY get together…..? when Carter took over the Atlantis expedition I had to rewind my dvd several times while she was unpacking because I thought I saw a pic of her and Jack all dressed up? And you kind of left us hanging when Jack left the show and broke up with that CIA chick! I don’t generally care for love stories in my science fiction but that one was so gradually built up that the suspense is killing me!
Side comment: I absolutely LOVE the funny exchanges between Daniel and Jack… especially when Daniel had Merlin in his brain… Fabulous character interactions!!!
Kudos to you and your entire team for such riveting drama and for having it last so long!! I have purchased all of the DVD offerings and re-watch the series all the time.
Happy New Year!!
Mrs. Dex aka Rhiannon lol.
Hi Joe-
I’ve been reading your blog for years. I named my baby daughter Teyla. I also have a pug who looks identical to Maximus. He’s gettin’ on too. Also half my family lives in Canada. It’s about time I start commenting! You always make me smile!!!
OMG! I just read that SGU got cancelled!!! I do not understand it! All these other dumb shows!! I don’t even know what to say
Aye, indeed, I felt the same sense of loss AND betrayal(SyFy is not going to be SyFy anymore!), too, when my friend Cloudshape informed me there will not be a third season of SGU, let alone a sufficient synopsis. Well. Of course, there are worse things on THIS side of the known universe. Still- SGU is the best show that is running at the moment- I have to agree with Sue- “all the other dumb shows”. But this is the crisis: now that TV makers have shaped most of their audience into crispchewing, junkconsuming daft nonbrains, it is very tough to go the other direction……hectolitres of witless anti-spittle is now tossed at those who still want a show apart . Me, I was so very much looking forward to see if string theory might have played a part, or what other wonders and/or conundrums might have been in store for those mis(?)fortunate destiny dwellers…..now, we might have to write our own conclusion. But please- don´t give up looking for options. How much money would be needed to go on…? Sincerely G.M
Hey, any idea where I might be able to get a scale model of the ??. Its my favorite shop design yet. The model I’m taking about in the big one you guys used as reference??
Hi, in Australia they are playing Stargate Universe on a free to air channel called Eleven owned by Ten. At the end of 2009 Ten started playing SGU they played the first 4 episodes, then pulled it off. Them 4 episodes got around 500,000 views, which is very good for australia. They recently started playing SGU on eleven. I was Wondering if you have thought about trying to get a third season of SGU from someone other then a US company. Personally i think you should try channel Ten/ Eleven at http://www.ten.com.au or http://www.eleven.com.au . If you do give them a “ring” i would love to hear how it went.
Hi, I have admired SGU from its beginning, especially the cast, production design, SFX, and Joel Goldsmith’s music. It’s some of the most visceral and affecting story-telling that sci-fi TV has ever seen.
An idea that frequently gets kicked around by fans of a show after an abrupt cancellation is the prospect of privately financing or subsidizing a new season. In this case, with the sets still standing and the creative team hopefully still available, if 40,000 individuals could be found to contribute $1,000 to an escrow account, would it be enough for a release straight to Blu-ray? What about 20,000 people and SyFy flogging an advertising gimmick like “Sponsored by Fans” or “FanTastic SyFy” (Ugh).
It’s an intriguing prospect; so large a sample of people dedicated enough to contribute on that level might demonstrate to the ratings companies that their sampling methods and models are flawed. Such individuals would likely be above-average consumers too – something the ratings companies and advertisers should be keenly interested in.
If nothing can be developed however, I’d like to thank you and the rest of the show’s production team for some of the most ambitious TV ever broadcast.
Joe,
First of all, let me say that I’ve admired your work over the years. I am sorry that SGU is being cancelled for your teams sake.
Would you let me shoot straight with you? I looked for a way to write you by e-mail and couldn’t find it.
I and my kids have watched all the SG-1, SG-A episodes, have paid for download or watched purchased CDs of the shows. We don’t have cable or satellite TV so SCI-FI was not an option. Regardless, we’ve put our money into the entertainment you provided.
When SG-U Season 1 came out, I pre-bought the whole season from the Apple Store and couldn’t wait.
When I saw the first episode, I thought, “Uh-Oh. I can’t let my kids watch this because of the simulated sex.” As I watched the rest of the season, the story line was interesting, but it was not suitable for my teenagers in several episodes.
The end result was that I deleted the downloaded season from the computer, and only followed season 2 in synopsis.
I am writing this because I had to use the OFF button for my family’s sake. I don’t know if I’m the only one like this, but it is something to think about. Not all of your audience wants to see explicit (as much as TV rules will allow) love making on TV. In my case, I had to prevent my kids from following the story of SG-U.
I hope this converstion influences your decisions on what will be scripted in your future work.
Best Wishes,
Jeff
I still miss Stargate Atlantis, the acting, the storyline, the actors everything was so good and boom its gone i am so tired of seeing good programs stop for not reason
miss you stargate sg1 and atlantis
I had a question. With the End of Stargate Universe i had one true question.
Have you heard of Pioneer One? if not. i think you should look into it. its a TV SERIES MADE FOR Bit Torrent. its fully funded by the public.
Why couldnt this be adapted to Universe. if every fan donated $5.00 (forget 1 starbucks coffee for the good of stargate) i bet the production costs could be covered.
just a opinion of a Canuck in BC but i really dont understand why this isnt something that could be adopted to the stargate franchise. i dont want to see it go. i grew up watching SG1 & SG:A in elementry and high school. it was awsome. i had previously been on set on a weekend when a few production members were around on a saturday afternoon drinkin some Guinuss. and being able to see how it was all done. it reminds me of the past and how the future is vast and un-written.
is there anyway to push to find a way to get the lines open to have it publicly funded….. anyway. thats my comment.
Great Blog for SG Fans
I am with Brent Mcghee here !!!!!!
Best idea I have heared so far !
To see the SGA Movie done I would not blink for one second and put in some money for it !!!
What about it, Joe ?!
Hey Joe, loved the Stargate shows, hated hearing about SGU being canceled. Good luck in your future endeavors, looking forward to having you an hour from my own city of Oshawa. Expect random drive by hugs!
As a long time fan of Stargate, I just have to say. This REALLY SUCKS.
Not just the fact that SG-U is cancelled, or the fact that the SG-1 and SG-A movies are at a stand still for years now, but really the fact that MGM and SyFy are mistreating and disappointing fans in a BIG way.
Maybe we will all win and MGM will be forced to sell to a company that realizes how important the fans are, and that you can’t get away with treating them badly.
I hope you find a way to get these movies pushed through.
Personally if I could Pre-Order a copy of each movie for $10, to be shipped once production is complete. With adequate assurance the movie would be made, I would definitely go for it.
Amen to that Rumblefish …. amen to that !!!!
I’m assuming this is where “mailbag” questions go.
Could you tell us if there is an existing “history” within the Stargate universe regarding the sequence of the gate technology development. My guess would be that the full-rotating gate is the oldest, then the rotating inner-track gate, followed by the solid-state gate.
My only problem with the theory is the full-rotating ring has the portable DHDs, which I would think would be a “third generation” development to prevent unauthorized use of the gates. On the other hand, if you could setup such a network, the nice thing to do – in a perfect galaxy – would be the on-site DHDs so that everyone would benefit.
I know it’s “old news”, but I wanted to share my deception with the cancellation of SGU. It was creative, intriguing and supported by great acting.
Year after year, I see shows with great potential being canceled by networks after one or two seasons. Obviously, ratings and publicity revenue drive these decisions. But I question, the ability of these traditional networks to effectively and efficiently transmit original content, especially with the sci-fi genre (Considering the viewer base is much more oriented towards new trend media platforms. i.e. streaming and digital releases).
In my opinion the future of original sci-fi content lies in the further developmental of these new media platforms. Integrating social networks in the promotion of such content was a first step. The second step is integrating the transmission (streaming) of content on these same social networks (i.e. youtube on facebook).
If original sci-fi content is even easier to access online, available in HD (at a reasonable price), the masses will follow. And in the end, it is no secret that the masses break or make a series on the long run.
Hi Joe,
I will post one comment here, because I do not know where else is suitable for this …
I am just catching up will all the madness which is going on in Internet with connect with the cancellation of SGU and I would like to share some points with you and the rest with the auditory ….
1. I do not think that in fact Syfy channel or MGM really want to lose SG franchise. I think SGU has been cancelled just because of the low rating ,which come during the fact that the producing team change the original picture style .This bring the all disappointment and together with all the rest financially may not sound any longer….
Well is not nice as a fact, but let turn it up side down and see what we have :
We have SGU “Lost in space”with great cast, great script, concept and plot ,so why not turn it into a movie ???? Forget about the show – give them a great movie with the same cast.
2. Replace the 3 years left in the contract of SGU with a new spin- off which combine SG1 and SGA underlines in one GREAT 3 year FINAL with embracing all the underlines placed of before . Forget about the two SG1 and SGA movies ( for now ).
Then what we have : we have one excellent movie “Lost in space”, which if succeed will bring continuation to the SGU show after and one great Final which will set up the franchice image exactly where is was .
The most important – it may sound financially and commercially for MGM and Syfy and the majority of the public will love it. Most important it is a very gentle “way out” of this complicated situation in which everybody will be satisfied in the end.
I wish to see SG Words as a new line inside the franchise created only as a “Collection of forever SG movies”. I would like to think for this “branch “as the spin –off “data base, where other shows can be created in the future and what is the better start for a collection like this, where the first movie is “Lost in space”….the turning point …..
Greetings from Holland!
Sorry typing mistake : Stargate Worlds (SGW)..:(((
Hello Mr. Mallozzi,
I had three questions that I was thinking about as I was watching SGU. (Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask, or if they have been asked and answered before.)
1. If the seeding ships were deployed long before Destiny was, what happened to the seed ship (encountered by Destiny) that allowed the Ursini to find and board the ship?
2. Because the seed ship had been disabled/adrift for an indeterminate amount of time, could it be assumed that Destiny is “missing” a path to its end goal? Or is it more that the seed ships create a map of the Universe, and Destiny plots the best path?
3. Were the Ursini on board the seed ship really the last of their kind?
Thanks for taking a look at my questions, and have a great time in Vegas! Those restaurants and their offerings look amazing!
Hello,
Before Stargate SG-1, Season 9 aired, I read that discussions took place, with the possibility of changing the name of the show to Stargate Command.
To some extent I agree with AN72, who suggested creating a new TV show containing characters from all 3 shows.
Now that there have been 3 successful shows, each containing a range of strong storylines and talented cast. A new show could contain a re-designed and possibly relocated Stargate Command. Advances in technology obtained from the Asgard, Atlantis and Destiny could help to give the show a fresh feel. Cast from all 3 shows could be utilized to continue to produce high quality storylines.
Stargate Command could still communicate with the Destiny via the Communication Stones or possibly being able to gate to the Destiny via a planted with the same composition as Icarus, which means that Stargate Universe storylines could also continue.
Tough luck on the cancellation. i was a harsh critic of the early season: it was too much like General Hospital in a crappy old starship. BUT: with more action and sci-fi techno its quite good now.
So whats next? SyFy is now the most ridiculous channel in north america now drivel like ghost hunters, wrestling and bullshit reality shows. There will be no Syence Fyction shows at all within a few years – but the TV execs know that – soon it will become like all of the rest of the dull TV channels of pap-filth.
Hi timbotini,
The way how I see it is not just about tough luck.
It is mixing up the basics of a franchise idea in principle and from my point of view ( outsider) I can’t say from where is come from and who trigger it.
For example : In retail. 1.When you have a franchise you keep a main list of product lines within every retail shop, never mind how large is the chain. It connect with customer recognition.
2.If you want to add a new product lines, your choice is very careful and usually you try not to conflict the new added product lines with the already existing ones which bring you already profit and spoke out the vision of the franchise it self.
Have a lot more things involve here, but mainly this two main rules just was broken with SGU. Great scenario, great cast ,great vision, but just conflicting with the first two in any possible way of innovation. Innovation is good and refreshing when you run a franchise…BUT NOT when you break the two main rules of above….Troubles are guaranteed…..
Another thing…creating a fallow up as I write before …if allowed after all this….
At this point is will be quiet tricky, because THE LAST what should be done is RECICLING old ideas.
EMBRACING old ideas is something different, giving unexpected twist to all old underlines and shocking the public with a new development – I think this is the potentially successful formula to restore the old glory …..
….but as I personal find out in trying to contact some of the members of the team, this industry is even more close then mine and in fact no one accept anything from the public…and nothing as such come out of them ….so I keep my papers in the desk useless, waiting to see what going to happened…
Greetings to all
Joseph,
I’m a writer of YA sci-fi. My only book is Psion Beta. A big fan of yours read it and asked me to come here and try to get you to read it and comment on it. After looking over your website, I would love a chance to get the book in your hands and see what you think. I’ve heard you do book discussions and have the authors come onto the site and answer questions. I don’t know how you select your books, but if you’re interested, I’ve love to have you take a look at mine. Here’s the amazon link if you want to check it out. It’s gotten excellent reviews and the exposure you could provide would be amazing. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Joe,
Can’t believe after all those years way back at the YWCA and then McGill our paths just may cross again being in the same city….Glad to hear you have moved to TO. It is really not as bad as you make it sound – give it a chance and you may never turn back. Good luck on all your new work ventures, discovering lots of great new food venues and people in Toronto!
Dear Joe,
I’m new here, learning quickly
I saw only today SGU’s episode Suzire (In my country they just broadcast “Air” Part 2). It was so fun to see again Mckay and Woolsy from SGA. When I first saw SGA I was still a child, but I really enjoyd it, and now when I’m kind of teenager, I enjoyed to see them again. This show escorted my during crisis(es) and success(es). I just felt again as a child, and it really excited me, I almost cry… With all the respect to SGU, for me – there is always place in the heart for SGA. I understood that Woolsey isn’t any longer the commander of the Atlantis expedition… Than who is? that’s mestyrious… Do you believe… is there any chance for an Atlantis Movie?.
About the Atlantis Theme when Mckay entered, it didn’t sounded like the normal theme… more like your’e also missing this show, it sounded so nostalgic. I really miss these guys. Hope that one day, we’ll see them again. Atlantis mission didn’t end… In Atlantis you showed us that we don’t need to giveup on our friends and family. I hope we’ll get the chance to see them again, or “Enemey at the Gate” was truely the moment of abandonment of the family… Rodney is the best!
I am a huge fan of Stargate Atlantis bit I have no idea how to contact the caste and crew, so if you could please tell me thank you.
Don’t let this “Star”gate become a black hole, save it
This is a letter I wrote to SyFy….. I hope they read it and understand what I feel.
Dear Syfy network and its programmers,
I’ve been a “Star” Trek Fan since I started watching TNG in my childhood. DS9 was a good off shoot of TNG, and Voyager was just as wonderful The New and improved, the Base at the edge of “the federation” and Voyager, lost in the furthest reaches of space.
It was Great how “Star” Gate followed this same run, Sg1 the new and improved from the movie, Atlantis, The base at the edge of reachable space, and then Universe, lost in the furthest reaches of space.
I was upset when Atlantis didn’t make it past the 5th season, but 5 season is what I would expect most TV shows to make. I would have guessed Atlantis would have made it to 7 seasons, but we can’t always get what we want.
Then, stuck in Hope BC, with a broken car, 12 hour drive from home, sitting in a hotel, pissed off at my broken JDM car, struggling to find a radiator that will fit my ever so imported car, stress and in a BAD MOOD. I skip channels…. and I see….. STARGATE UNIVERSE…… a NEW STARGATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My mood immediately rises, and my day seems to brighten. This short commercial about it give me a renewed sense of “hope” in Hope. My “Star” is back!!!!!
As I’m walking to the parts store too see if they found what I need, my mood is MUCH BETTER. Idea’s and thoughts of what it is going to be jump all over the place. A smile from ear to ear has given me the energy to make it through the next 3 days of waiting on parts being shipped from Vancouver.
I start watching this new “Star” and, at first I’m not impressed. Its got a odd format. ITs NOT LIKE stargate has been. There is no leader, the scientist is insane, no main character with her oh so nice T nA (don’t get me wrong, that ships full of T n A and WHAT? no main character alien…….. my mind thinks WTF?
SG1 had its Jaffa, Atlantis had its Space cowboy (Ronnin was cool!). But Universe was odd, DARK format, a lot more drama. But after the first season, I was drastically worried I’d keep interest. THis bothered me A LOT. It’s a “Star”, its gotta be good, when it gonna catch me into it.
And then season two starts, and it catches me little by little, and more and more.
THEN, my favorite scientist steps in……. although lacking social skills, his brain keeps me stimulated. Thank you Rodney, you jerk……. I’ve missed you…. SO stands new hope for me……. Me begging for him to find his way through that worm hole and onto that ever so beaten and old Model T of space ships.
And…. again my mood is dropped…… as I KNOW your most likely gonna cancel it………
So…… Atlantis could have made two more seasons….. but it got cut short……. WHAT? why the heck did Atlantis get taken to earth? SO many story lines unended. ARG!!!!!!!!
So, you end this new “Star” and your gonna lose one CONSTANT viewer. I know I’m only one person……. but I’m sure there hundreds of thousands of people behind me somwhere……
But if you end this “star” it will make your channel become nothing but a “black hole” for me, destructive and a WHOLE LOT OF SUCK!!!!!!!!!!
I’m not trying to be rude…….. but this is how I feel. So end this “Star” Gate You’ll end another “star” that will only have you drop a few million viewers. THe fans may not say it, but there are there. This is my first letter written to hope it sparks a bit more in you for this “Star”. But I NEED to speak up, and hope you reconsider saving this show.
Raymond Logan, Powell River, BC, Canada (only about 100 km north of Vancouver, my favorite city and the Stargates home town)
Thanks! I love SGU. I am very sad to see it go. You should try to do something with Russell T Davies. I love his DR WHO and Torchwood. I bet anything would be stellar. Sorry about the bad pun. Best of luck
Stargate will never die, here is a cool video I found on GateWorld : a guy discovering a Stargate in his own street. In French but there are subs on youtube.
Are we to assume that you do not care about Stargate Universe ending? Why did you guys wait till the kill before bringing out the best writing? Is there any intent in finding another venue for it? Do you not see that some killer movies could be made form this. It is by far the best Stargate ever written and the best SciFi out there? Is it easy to sluff these off?
Please don’t just walk away from this… Please, I bet the rating now beat the crap out of the previous that killed it. Does that mean nothing to you guys? These are fair questions. After all we are just liking what you created. Seems like thats what you guys would strive for…
Please answer these questions so we can either give up like it looks like you guys did or you can give us hope for a continuation of the series. Please be human and not hollywood…. Please….
Your right, the writing for SGU is amazing, the storyline is getting better and better. The characters are becoming better and better. This great show, with wonderful writers behind it. I haven’t had a show in a long time where waiting a whole week for the next episode is agonizing. All I’m wanting is more and more of SGU. And whats next for season 3? well…. that’s one question i’ll never know the answer to, cause all i can find, is SGU is gonna be ended.
What a mistake this is.
Joe…………… don’t let it die.
I almost want to cry over the fact that after this upcoming Monday, May 9, 2011, there will not be an episode of Stargate I have not seen. I feel bad for Brad Wright and you, Joseph Mallozzi, who will no longer have an active role in creating cosmic masterpieces of science fiction television. Thanks again MGM and Syfy for once again crushing the imagination and loyalty of a great franchise. I really hope you guys can dig your creation from the depths of the MGM vault and back into the light of something less constricting and more willing to indulge into what the fans want more of.
I am and have been an avid fan since the time I first saw Stargate: The Movie probably back in 1995-96. I’m currently 22 and if I ever kids I hope my children have the opportunity to have intelligent and thrilling television like Stargate.
As for me I am going to jump into my life feet first as a soon to be Airman and brother in the USAF.
Good luck on future works and godspeed.
Joshua
I am watching what happened on the TV in the last years and just can’t believe it.
Before they make TV shows for the people and they keep the shows for the people. The simple example of Bold and the Beautiful …how many years 30???And how many like this….
Sometimes I just want not to watch TV anymore.
Yesterday I was thinking the guild of producers and writers just have to open a portal in Internet ,make their creations ,uploaded there, have weekly online “ticket” and let everyone who want to watch to be able to downloaded. Why we need the Tv then?
Is financially difficult to start something like this….but not for a show which is known…and maybe can be found privet investors for new shows, if the producer name and the team is known and proven….
I presume then have no matter if you have a million visitors for week for 5 USD per episode for one show or or 2 milions…imagine having several shows running online….and is “collectable” …and why badder with your talent even to talk to a TV channel then ….internet is everywhere – tv distribution – not! and when once downloaded everyone can put in on the screen at home ( if want ) anyway….
Is not a fashion yet, but I am quiet convince that if the ethics and the moral in this industry continue like this – this will happened as well. I hope soon because I am the first one which going to take a membership as this….
Is there *any* way you could give us hints as to what you planned or at least wanted to do with SGU, given more time? Maybe a hint at resolution of the series-ending cliffhanger?
The show has gotten so damned good, it’s painful to think we won’t get more of it. Some hints at what you had in mind would soothe our pain.
I was going to send this as an email so as not to spoil anything for everyone else if I’m right. \
But since I didnt see a way of doing that…
Are we gonna find out that the drones are an outgrowth of Destiny’s decendants?
Just occurred to me while watching Monday’s ep.
@Don Matthews
-if you read some of Joseph Mallozzi’s posts about SGU (I think around the time the movie was canceled though possibly from the initial show cancellation), he has already noted his ideas about where the drones initially came from (or one of the other directors/writers did)
@ Joe Mallozzi
-outta curiousity, what do you think the chances are for a SG revival in the future (2 years, 5 years, 10 years) as I am working on a script idea/storyline that I think would work amazingly based on Novus etc (more working on it cause I felt that SGU season 2, episode 17 was the best SG (not just SGU, all SG) episode EVER and it needs more, much more added to it so wanted to create my own story – would have preferred the whole SGU series to continue but SYFY and MGM seemingly have screwed that as we all of course know)
Hi Joe, I’m lamenting the passing of SGU, it turned into a great show with season 2.
Question: I read ages ago that in SGA the team would “find out much more about the city including what’s it’s original purpose was” and that “the city itself was a device that existed for a special reason” or words to that effect.
Was there any truth to this and, if so, what was this purpose?
Joe,
Is there any interest in reviving the SG franchise? Do you have spec scripts kicking around that you hope would see the light of day?
Aaron
Please let us know if there will be SG in the future. Stargate has been one of the most stable and constant things in my life. I’ve watched it for over 10 years and have loved it. Its really sad to see it go. Good luck to you and your future endeavors.
Pls bring us Stargate back!
I miss it ;(
Fuck the French ??!! It’s not nice ….
Hi Joe,
I have been watching Stargate since the 7th grade and it has been a very constant part of my life. Whehter it be SG-1, Atlantis, or Universe, there was always some sort of Stargate show on that I could relax and watch. Please tell me that there will be some sort of Stargate show coming! Anything to keep my imagination satiated would be greatly appreciated…
Thanks!
hi there,
So no more stargate anything
its sad, i didnt used to like any stargate until SGA, then i went back to SG1 then SGU. SGU was definately getting better and its a real shame we cant get more.
what now? any new shows like Stargate coming up?
Hey Joe;
I’ve been a fan of the SG universe for years, but SGU really caught my attention.
Has anyone put out the idea of starting a SGU-spin-off reality show? Normally I hate reality shows, but throughout the story line, several people from the original “crew” ended up stranded on some planet with no way to get home. Theoretically, it would be possible to find several ex-military personnel as well as engineering professionals that are out of work and willing to participate in a reality series.
The premise being what would happen if a mixed bag of people were dropped on an alien planet with no hope of rescue- how fast would that micro-civilization advance? Could they develop tools? Could they build shelters? Could they harvest seeds and begin agriculture?
What would happen if you suddenly dropped 12-30 people into the stone-age with an Ipad, solar charger, a combat knife and rifle?
Personally, I would watch that, and it would give us something to do while Destiny completes its 3 year voyage.
Frank
I just loved the ending of SGU. Thank you very much. I hope that the series will continue one day. Please try to convince the people necessary to make a 3rd season
All over the world there are millions of people who love SG… Take us on another Stargate – Sci-Fi journey.
I simply love you work.
Best wishes and thank you for your work so far.
Hi every one, I’m Huge Fan of StarGate , I’m in grieving like most of us. Joseph thanks for those great episodes, it was a great ride. Somme questions if you don’t mind…
1) SGU: Is only one ship out there the ‘Destiny’ ? , because if is the mission is so important and profound sound to me that should be more than just one, but well you know the Ancients better than we do…
2) SGU: Ripple efect (LOL), Is only one seed ship ? the one we just see benig destroyed against the drone’s commad ship, sound to me that if a civilization like the Ancient ‘The gate builders’ wanted a gate network to colonize several galaxys should be more that just one seed ship, but well you know the accients better than we do…
3) SGA: sincerely Why Beckett, I was pretty in Shock when he dies in ‘Sunday’, but i really like the way he was brought back, very twisted but surprising and refreshing…
4) SGA: Ripple efect (LOL) again, in the episode ‘the Tower’ we saw another Atlantis class Spaceship City, with a depleted ZPM’s, with Ancient Defend drones, and Puddle Jumper, so it means that Atlantis was not the only one City that the Ancient builded, is there more than two?
Well Joe,
SU has finished, with a super nova rather than the simpering soap opera pulp of the first 6 episodes of character building -that I think ultimately killed of this show. You lost too many of the faithful fan base while trying to broaden the appeal of a sci fi drama.
Great idea, had lots of promise which we saw only in the last 4-5 episodes. Characters began to work (which makes me think all the character building with the stones was nonsense and not needed) Maybe a little to late. I am of course hoping that after reflection the SyFy channel will think of extending for one more series. Good luck with that.
Whats next, “Ghosthunters extraterrestial”, “Ghosthunters what bullshit next”. The demise of real SciFi is well on the way.
Just my 5c worth. And best wishes for your next endeavour, I am a great fan of your work.
With any chance of my favorite series of shows, Stargate and it spin-off’s coming to a end I find myself hoping something will show up, and catch my eyes and ears. Stargate has always stimulated my curiosity and given me help when I’m putting pencil to paper and drawing my thoughts (creating a physical interpretation of my thoughts is significantly harder than anyone is expected).
Anyways, my question is directly for Joe M.
Hope for another, or continuation for any Stargate show is obviously at an end. So, Joe, can you give me(us) some info on any other television series or movie that your working on. As we cannot expect any new SG to watch, what else you got? I’m sure there is hundreds of ideas in that mind of yours. Along with the other Stargate writers, I have NO DOUBT that you guys have lots of idea’s for a television series that could excite my mind, and the millions of other fans of your work.
So, I tip my hat, I stand back, offer to shake your hand, and just hope, and say, “I know there is significant abundance of idea’s in your mind, and I truly hope that you can find a outlet for these idea’s. I think I am fairly safe is saying that ‘we, your loyal fans, would really enjoy it if you could strive to supply us with a series that can stimulate our imagination(s).’ I’m sure eventually another show/series that will catch me interest, however if this series could be of your making, or at least partially of your making. So please, help us out, or at least let us know how we can help you!!”
Hi,
First of all I want to emphasize that my English could be better.
So I have to honestly admit that I find it very sad that Stargate Universe has been discontinued. Many people have started to like the second season. Even old Stargate fans are very impressed. The second season brought more action to light. Perhaps we ought to continue on your third Season use? I would almost bet it that season three is a resounding success, for the end of the 2nd Season leaves everything open. I mean, hello? What happened to Eli? Maybe he finds a way to circumvent the drones? Maybe he finds a star in that he can charge the Destiny? And maybe he finds even the other people and together they defeat the drones? There might also be that there is such thing as a basic code for the drones (like Replikators)? Yes, I know, each drone has a ship. But how can, for example, the ships communicate with each other? (After all, they also know how they must be divided in the Galaxy). After all, Eli is a clever little head;)
But I have so many ideas for a third season.
I think I speak for many people when I ask to call a third season to life. Certainly it is true that the ratings have declined. But who makes such a long break has to win back his fans again. And this is not by leaving a project like this falling!
And I can say with certainty that the fans will look at Stargate Universe. The premise is that the actors remain the same and of course the whole team is to Malozzi!
That’s it!
Greetings from Germany
Nico
Hi,
first of all I want to thank all the people that made all the Stargate series for delivering to us so many entertaining hours of good sci fi. I enjoyed watching all three series, but SGU in fact was my favorite, primarily because of its darker tone and – as a matter of fact – because its setting allowed for something new, story wise, to happen in the Stargate universe.
Considering the fact that you expressed your discontent about not being able to wrap things up cleanly in a proper series finale/final season, and that this is quite unsatisfactory for viewers, too, wouldn’t it be a good idea, if contracts for future series (with story arcs) would contain some cancellation clause that guarantees that there will be x final episodes after the creative staff is informed of the cancellation? This way there would always be the possibilty to resolve at least most of the story threads and provide a sound ending for the series.
I know, it is probably mostly wishful thinking, that this would be possible to negotiate, and I don’t even know, if it would actually make sense from the creative’s viewpoint, but I think it is worth thinking and discussing about within the writer/showrunner “community” for the benefit of both the creators and the viewers. There probably needs to be only one to first make such a deal for it to become accepted.
Besides I would really appreciate, if not only US viewership but global viewership would be taken into account when deciding about whether to order another season for a series, at least within the same corporate group. This would – of course – require nearly simultanous worldwide premieres, which I also appreciate. At least the latter seems in fact to become more common; Gauntlet aired on Syfy Germany just a few days after US. I know, I’m addressing this last paragraph to the wrong person, but it kind of fits in.
Kind regards,
Swen
PS: I hate studios! Do they actually do something productive to provide the viewers with good (quality!) series? There are lots of examples, where they or the networks ruined good shows, either because they enforced their bad and cheesy input to the upcoming storyline, or because they don’t have the patience to not cancel a well written show prematurely. Oh, well, they have the money. That’s unfortunate.
PPS: Somehow I wish, Stargate Universe wouldn’t have been in_Stargate_ universe. Story wise it would have been not too hard to set it in another. But then MGM would not be able to unproductively sit on its franchise license and block a good show.
Hey Joseph
First of all i want to thank you for many cool Stargate – Episodes! Hopefully the franchise stays alife.
I have a question to you.
Can you please tell we who is responsible for the music used in the new Transporter Series?
Best Regards
Andreas
I have a question about SGU/The Destiny/and the Alterans/Ori.
So we know that the Ancients came from galaxy far far away millions of years ago. This imply’s that they came from a galaxy closer to the center of the universe. We also know that that is where the (former) followers of the Ori reside.
The Destiny was launched to find out about the signal that came from the oldest part of the Universe aka the center of the universe.
So is the Destiny ever going to pass through the Ori/Alteran galaxy at any point? Has it already? If it did pass through already is that where the Ori got the required to knowledge to build Stargates/Supergate?
Hello,
Could you please thank Carl while he is still about for SGA 1×15 Before I Sleep. It is without a doubt in my mind my favourite episode of the franchise. The way everything is wrapped up, Elizabeth dying without anyone saying “seconds to go and I saved her life”, the timing of everything is just perfect.
Thank you,
Evan Pyle
Two things, One, What if I could tell you how to finance a Stargate Universe Movie. I know how you could Alter the T.V./ Movie business in one swift stroke. I also have two or three ideas for possible production. Two pilots and one movie, the movie is a Civil War epic, true story….My great grandfather rode with this guy….glad to tell you more. Was really upset that SciFi cancelled SGU….They killed it, cannot believe that Sanctuary among other trash was saved. Anyway, success is the best revenge. Can help with that if you would like. LRGII
My question is regarding Air Part 3.
Were there ever any plans to show the planet where Curtis and Palmer went or to even revisit their story at some point in season 1 to show what happened to them?
Hi Jeoseph,
unfortunately, my english is not the best. First of all thank you for the many wonderful stargate series. Great praise!
I’m a big stargate fan from Germany. I practically grew up with it and since I was 10 years old looked for the follow. I thought SGU was the best version of StarGate. It was much more realistic, not always the hero types such as O’Neill or Sheppard. Much more human and went deeper into the psyche, because the characters seemed more human and realistic. There were normal people who were stranded together by chance and had to make do. The character development was fascinating to watch. Were cast really great actors.
When I heard that the 2nd should be the last season that was a shock, just starting to grow, it should stop again. I would like to see how many more. Unfinished series / movies are really annoying and the end was really unsatisfactory.
If the fans could really get things moving, because there was already a script for a 3rd season and you would enter again?
PS: I would be interested and who SGU really has on his conscience, write Syfy get the answer MGM canceld and blame it on MGM said syfy.
best wishes from Germany
Christina
Big fan of all 3 stargate series, goodluck on the transporter series!
So, I was watching SG-1′s Unending the other day and I had a thought.
Some of the asgard technology could synthesize anything they wanted including Food, Oxygen and even a Cello. Why didnt they just synthesize some huge blocks of Trinium and put them between the ship and the ori laser?
What in the world are you people talking about? Is this the future?
Hello Mr. Mallozzi,
I’m a big fan of all three series, but that’s not why im writing here. In 3 years i want to go study script writing and im really interested in it, i already also made some videos, so right after i saw the Gauntlet episode, that idea came to me: “what if someone should unofficialy continue the show like a machinima using pc games graphic?” There already are people working on destiny modes to some games with both interior and exterior and for the characters i wanted to use The Movies game with greenscreen. I wanted to ask you, what do you, as one of the original creators, think about it? Ive also made a story for the “first episode of the third season”. Shortly, its about that destiny really jumps out of the FTL [edit] And i have and idea to next episode, that Eli reload’s Ginn back to Destiny’s mainframe and she helps them in searching for the device, because she, as a program in Destiny, can control lot of kinos at one time.
Thanks for reply, Mr. Mallozzi.
Vojtěch Mašín
[Thanks for this but I'm afraid I'm going to have to maintain my policy of not reading fan fiction].
je voudrais savoir s il y aura une suite une saison 3 a STARGATE UNIVERSE mr Mr mallozzi car je n ai jamais rien vu d aussi bon captivant passionnant que cette serie
c est ce que votre equipe a realise de meilleurs et je regrette que pour des raisons soi disantes economiques vous l ayez arrettee
pitie continuez car aucune saga ne vous arrive a la cheville et essayez de convaincre ses producteurs du fait que nous les addicts de SGU sommes en manque de cette histoire qui nous faisait rever et nous evader d un quotidien cinematographique ennuyeux et fade
nous sommes tres nombreux a penser ce que j ecris bises a tous
Dear Mr. Mallozzi,
I’m an italian fan and i’m writing to say thanks for all.
Dear Joseph, with the pundits agreed that mighty Netflix needs better streaming content to justify its price increase, and with 400,000 Netflix viewers giving SGU an average rating better than 4 out of 5, and with Netflix now producing original shows, there exists an extraordinary opportunity to bring back SGU. I suggest pitching to Netflix first, then going with their backing to MGM/Spyglass, but you know the business best. Thanks to the brilliant ending of season 2, you can easily invent a story arc to get SGU back on its feet without all the actors or Destiny sets for as long as necessary. (My second SGU fan film on YouTube describes such a story arc.) We SGU fans are fighting for you with all our hearts and souls, but we need your help to save this majestic series. Thank you! http://facebook.com/SaveSGU
Hi, Joe! I like Blake Linton’s Netflix suggestion, but I’d add another vital point: Demographics! Because SGU is the “hardest” science fiction ever seen on TV, lots of its fans are technophiles–the kind of people who proudly configure their home networks so they can watch HD streaming Internet video on their living room TVs at their convenience. Yup, geeks! Many have ditched cable TV in favor of Internet streaming. This hurt SGU on Syfy because Nielsen ratings don’t properly measure this form of popularity. (No blame here; no one knows yet how to statistically integrate this stuff with traditional TV ratings.) These same technophiles have embraced Netflix’s streaming media, which is why SGU has done so well there, and why a season 3 exclusive to Netflix would do even better. SGU was made for Netflix customers! Or should I say Netflix was made for SGU fans?
Thanks for reading.
Hello Mr. Mallozzi,
As I know, decorations of “Universe” were sold on the auction, and this means, that to shoot full length movies or serial, which will finish SGU, is impossible. In such case, should we pray, that sometime someone will be agree to draw few anime movies (as you know, anime is drawn for adult and teenager auditory)?
Any news on Stargate Extinction?
I was hoping for a movie but now i hope to at lest get a book to let us loyal fays (before SGU) know how everything ended.
If you are up for ideas…
An atlantis moon defense base sounds like a good idea.
Traveling to different galaxies and meeting new and interesting friends and foes.
Galaxy gateway bridge’s for known and trusted galaxies.
I know its not easy you have to go through a lot of deals to get a book published but a story cant just end without knowing what true purpose earth’s plans are for atlantis.
Well, as I watch the Stargate fans as sad as could see your series ended just in Europe but not because I want to say through the mystery of what you write here in the U.S. that the end is not generalized, do not you know them from the creator but the German team just filmed series Stargate Special Forces.Rovnou I say so spins Stargate Speical Forces certainly surprise you and it’s not a trick question so you can write an e-mail if you want to learn more.
If I win the big one on the Euro Millions Lottery soon (Say £160 million) how much would you need to do a last Stargate movie? Your choice of which one. Just wanted to work out who’d get what from my winnings.
And yes I am serious, It’d be the most expensive DVD i’d own!
Joseph can you please tell me what make dr nicholas rush’s eyeglasses
please put me out of my misery and indulge me so make me from :s/:( into
(the ones that are shiny black arms which one was broken in “air”) were in stargate universe??? its doing my head in and cant look at more glasses pages
@Ej Smith… brilliant comment, I was thinking the same thing only the other week when it was 185 million… The speculation was that Stargate Continuum cost 7 million, for a SGU with the sfx and rebuilding of the set, I think you could scale that up slightly, If I had it I’d gladly splash the cash, the question is would MGM continue the franchise to a private investor with no clue or experience???
@Alan Curtis Looks like we had the same thought over the same roll-over! If MGM don’t want to or cant invest money into the SG franchise anymore then perhaps a private investor might be more tempting. Whoever it was would have to be happy to be a bit of a silent partner in it. Me i’d be happy for a background character part in it or at least credits (maybe a little royalties from sales
)
Even if MGM got on board, you’d still need the creative & writing team to be on board, plus you’d need the actors and lots of them are tied up in other projects.
Whatever happens, it would be good to see one or 2 more films. I’d be happy with SGU to find out what hapened next, but then I would love to see SGA and a Wraith attack on earth (to include Michael and Lt Ford perhaps). But SG1 will always always be special, so a third film for them would be amazing.
Dear Joseph, I know you consider it a “long shot” but I hope you will give me a bit of space on your blog to address those who wish for more SGU:
Did you know that the first science fiction fanzine was published in 1930 and named The Comet, later retitled Cosmology? Yes, more than 80 years ago, fans already understood that real science fiction takes place in space. As Star Trek later put it so well, “Space: the final frontier.”
Stargate has always been about exploring other worlds, sometimes using spaceships. And SGU, set aboard a runaway starship on an eons-old quest for the ultimate secret of creation, is quintessential space science fiction. Those 1930s fans would surely have known it was the best.
But by 1933 the fans were running into trouble with the sellers of science fiction. The announcement circular for the new fanzine Unusual Stories complained that, due to “short-sighted editors and publishers….science fiction has been sinking into the mire of the commonplace.” We face the same problem today: Yielding to the temptation of appealing to the mainstream’s lowest common denominator, the corporations that supply our television science fiction have given up their premise and core audience. They have forsaken true science fiction for campy, earthbound, low-budget trash. It is the responsibility of we the fans to steer them back to their true calling, just as it was eight decades ago.
The 1930s fans’ efforts were not in vain. In 1937, John W. Campbell assumed editorship of Astounding Science Fiction, and began publishing works by such luminaries as Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, and A. E. van Vogt. The Golden Age of Science Fiction had begun. Astounding paid authors much more for their stories than competing pulps, but with quality also came financial success: Astounding Science Fiction eventually changed its name to Analog Science Fiction and Fact, and remains in publication to this day.
We SGU fans at http://facebook.com/SaveSGU believe the lessons of history. We are certain that, once given the green light, Joseph Mallozzi and his team are easily creative enough to overcome all obstacles, just as Doctor Who’s writers have continued that series beautifully without any sets, props, or actors from its early days. We are equally confident that corrections to the show’s promotion, scheduling, and distribution methods will make it eminently profitable. It’s time for Stargate’s Golden Age.
Please join us at http://facebook.com/SaveSGU and help make it all happen as it did those many years ago.
Thank you.
Hi Joe,
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I could go on and on about how wonderful your show was and mean every word of it, but instead I wish to take a moment to let you know that many of us feel that the world of Science Fiction has been forever changed by the Stargate. Much like the earliest Sci-Fi movies had Rocket Ships which remain with us to this day, the Stargate has earned it’s place in Sci-Fi lore. The die-hard fans of Stargate travel will forever want MORE Stargate adventures! You would probably agree that the logistics involved in the control of the Stargate franchise are complex. So many corporations, writers, producers, contracts, and more, all make any Stargate show hard to create and that’s just the red tape. However, that being said, I for one have no doubt that the Stargate will reopen in some form in the not to distant future. You sir have the magic touch, so I can only hope that you will be a part of any SG project which lies ahead. It was very mean of the-powers-that-be, which allowed Stargate Universe to get its legs, just in time to have them cut off. The fate of Destiny and her crew is only one of many SG questions that need to be addressed. The executives who control the franchise are avoiding interaction with the countless fans who are asking for more Stargate. The ones that do occasionally say anything about this matter, simply say in so many words “It’s over”. The die-hard fans of Stargate (anything) are quick to follow up with “not so fast”. After over a dozen years of fantastic adventures through the gate, there are literally millions of SG fans worldwide. It is amazing to me that a good percentage of those fans still have no clue that the franchise has been brought to a screeching halt! That makes me feel good, because I know that only means one thing,… more and more good people are going to come forward to demand more Stargate. I personally am part of several different “Reopen the Stargate” clubs, such as “Save Stargate Universe” which is over 60,000 strong along with a few others. In fact, I’ve started a facebook club called “Save Future Stargate Travel”. That’s what this posting is all about. Saving FUTURE Stargate travel. The Stargate has become too big for any one person or corporation to control at this point, OR permanently close. The Stargate is now part of a worldwide Sci-Fi culture, the same way that that Rocket Ships are. Much like Star Trek, at this point, there is simply no way that it will ever completely end and that’s a good thing. PLEASE do what ever you can to get the ball rolling once again. Stargate adventures NEED YOU! The fans and I need you and we feel that “the world of Stargate” will be much better off with you than without you. You’ve proven yourself time and time again to be the best person for the job! So please do what you can to help us reopen the Stargate once again. Thank you for any help at all that you can offer!
Respectfully,
Joseph Sardone
Hello Joe,
I don’t know if you look at these commentaries, but I hope so. I have a question concerning the Daedalus-Class ships : their name is not clear, should we call them DSC-304 as for Deep Space Carrier (Apollo patch), or BC-304 as for BattleCruiser ?
Thanks in advance for an eventual answer, Fabien.
Dear Joseph,
I want to let you know that your fans’ war to save Stargate Universe has achieved an unexpected but major victory: Syfy renewed Eureka for 6 more episodes! Syfy’s content-free “official statement” leaves no doubt in my mind that the network simply decided to cancel Eureka. But with season 5 already well into production (and probably set in stone), that would have left the show without a proper ending. Fearing yet another PR disaster like SGU’s abrupt termination is still causing, Syfy decided it safer to renew Eureka for 6 more episodes so all its story arcs could be tied up neatly.
Eureka is no SGU, but it’s encouraging to know that our fight for you has already helped another show and its fans, and is teaching Syfy to act more responsibly toward its viewers. Onward!
Hello Joe,
Let me start with saying how much I love you. Simply. For all the incredible storytelling you’ve contributed to SG-1. My hero.
Down to business – a completely random question:
at the end of “Moebius”, after watching the tape and deciding to do nothing, Jack tells Sam that she’s “got packing to do”. I have bet with another SG fangirl that he meant her relocating from SGC (as per their finally hooking up off-screen); she thinks it was about prepping for fishing trip. Could you arbitrate? It’s gravely important.
Greetings, Joe
A many of time has passed since closed financing SGU, but nevertheless hope have stopped remains also all fans hope that once filming again will be financed. If certainly you have time whenever possible and without losing optimism, it is possible to write scenarios for 3 seasons which will be possible to act in film a year or two from now. In an ideal it would be original to remove in 3 years when “destiny” will arrive in other galaxy, but there is an interesting interpretation of development of the scenario in the next episodes. For example on road of flight of destiny when Eli nevertheless there will be no in stasis to the chamber yet one more fitter of a gate in which Eli will go and will be in stasis and will depart together with “destiny” or takes from it energy on “destiny”… Or 2 in 1 =)
It is possible to make also such version that in a fitter will be drons (one of their tactics of struggle against “destiny” =) that will give action elements.
Excuse for not exact transfer as I used the translator from Russian into English and ridiculous expressions =) I corrected that on the basis of the knowledge of English could turn out. Your serials look both in Russia and in Ukraine and in all this region! =) so ratings Stargate in SyFy not very much also are authentic =) I Wish successes in your job =)
On ancient it was to write xD
Would be more correct =)
maybe =)))
Dear Joseph,
Here’s my SGU pitch for Netflix, “Hey Netflix! Save Stargate Universe!”:
I hope the Netflix executives watch it. SGU and the entire Stargate franchise is doing so well there, it’s obvious Netflix should bring it back!
We are doing our utmost for you, Joseph! http://facebook.com/SaveSGU
Dear Joseph,
Did you know SGU was the second most popular TV series in the world?
When ChevronOne interviewed Mark Savela, he told them that “the torrents for Stargate Universe were pretty insane. Web traffic would go crazy after one of our episodes aired. Much more than any of the big network shows.”
After some intensive searching, I found proof of Mark’s claims. In November 2010, the Internet Commerce Security Laboratory published, “How Much Material on BitTorrent is Infringing Content? A Validation Study”. Here’s the link:
http://goo.gl/hbGwV
Appendix B contains a top 100 list of torrents measured during SGU’s season. There, in 9th and 11th place, are SGU season 1 episodes 17 and 18. Only theatrical movies and the series Lost ranked higher.
Wikipedia has some astounding statistics that make the significance of this accomplishment clear:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_(protocol)
In brief, BitTorrent accounts for 27% to 55% of all Internet traffic, has 100 MILLION users, a greater share of network bandwidth than Netflix and Hulu combined, and at any given time has more active users than YouTube and Facebook together.
That’s not all. Cyberlockers, which likely have identical demographics, have outgrown BitTorrent, as documented here:
http://torrentfreak.com/cyberlockers-take-over-file-sharing-lead-from-bittorrent-sites-110111/
Add in the streaming viewers as well, and we’re talking an Internet TV audience of at least 200 to 300 million.
And SGU was their second-favorite series.
Syfy and MGM should have recognized SGU’s tremendous Internet viewership and monetized it through product placement, banner ads, sponsorships and merchandising–things that work even with commercial-stripped fileshared copies. This would have positioned them at the forefront of the Internet TV revolution. Instead, their shortsighted executives simply shut down a potential gold mine.
This is all the more reason for us fans to continue the fight for SGU’s return. We know now that SGU can achieve phenomenal success, because it already did so. And we cannot let stand the terrible injustice of its cancellation.
Thank you as always for this forum.
Any way to contact you other than this message board?
Dear Joseph,
In addition to being one yourself, you surely know celebrities who are fans of SGU. Would you mind passing the word on to them about the SGU Celebrity Letter? A few words from the right people–including you!–in favor of SGU and its return could make a big difference. Here’s the Facebook page where it’s being organized:
http://www.facebook.com/notes/save-stargate-universe/the-next-step-celebrity-letter/241492965885396
Contact information is shown there. Thank you for your time, consideration, and above all, for giving us SGU.
And yes, I know you consider saving SGU a “long shot,” but we sci-fi fans have proven quite adept with long shots over the years!
Désolé de poster en français, mais je ne parle pas anglais.
Je suis un grand fan de Stargate et j’ai une simple question. Une trilogie est-elle possible ? Une dernière mission spectaculaire réunissant les trois équipes (SG1, Atlantis, Universe)
hi, well i am a fan of SGU and i just wanted to know if you knew how to get in touch with mgm. this isnt for any hate mail or anything it’s just that me and some other fans wanted to make an animated series to follow up season 2 and i just wanted to try and find out if we could actually do this and if we could accept donations to help with upkeep for a website and such. if you could respond that would be great
Dear Joseph,
I just wanted to let you know that renowned financial website TheStreet.com yesterday urged Netflix to revive Stargate Universe:
http://www.thestreet.com/story/11275690/5/10-cult-tv-shows-netflix-should-revive.html
Perhaps the article could serve as a discussion topic for you to break the ice with some Netflix executives? I am certain that no matter what the constraints on availability of actors, sets, and budget, you are creative enough to devise many ways to continue Stargate Universe. (I certainly can!)
We SGU fans continue our fight for you! Best wishes, and thank you for everything.
Dear Mr. Mallozzi,
I’m rather embarrassed to admit that I’ve only recently come round to seeing Stargate, rather later than I meant to, I confess. In any case, I only recently discovered that there will be no more Universe, and correspondingly, no more Stargate…at least for now. I’ve been doing a little digging on fansites and I think…if I may be so bold, I think I have an idea that might help elicit a massive amount of geek support for the show and maybe even make it the most anticipated thing since the Ark of Truth.
I believe the “problem” with SGU was a matter of the characters. (I apologize if the word problem is offensive, that was not my intention, sir.) In any case, I believe that the show would benefit by getting some of the old characters from SG1 or Atlantis, supposing that Earth manages to dial the Destiny and send another team of their best people to save the mission. I for one am a huge fan of Daniel Jackson…but I believe the addition of any fan favorite character from SG1 or Atlantis would bring in a whole lot of fan support. I must again apologize for any impertinence you may feel I have demonstrated, I know I am far from qualified to make such a call, but I am almost certain it would work.
Christopher Ruocchio
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOE! Best wishes! Russian Stargate fans.
Hi Joe.
Paul Weimer here from SF Signal.
Our contact info for you seems to be out of date. We tried to get a hold of you to invite you to do another mind meld with us, but the email bounced. Please feel free to email me if you are interested.
Dear Mr. Mallozzi,
I just want to ask one small question
.. are there any plans with the SG Atlantis movie? or it’s just a utopian idea? I’m trying to keep my expectations low, but it’s hard, because I want it so bad.. and I’m sure I’m not alone
… I was wondering if there is anything that we, fans, could do about the movie.. if you know about something, please, let me know
…
thank you!!!
Hi Joe,
Roy Tucker of SpaceGuard SG-1 here. I sent an email but it bounced. I wonder if you could email me?
I hope all is going well.
Best regards.
Dear Joseph,
You and your readers might like to know about my animated web show “The Cancellation Effect”, the first science fiction series created to save another science fiction series. It’s comedy with a serious message–that the cancellation of Stargate Universe is an incalculable tragedy for mankind. Here are the first and second episodes:
Thank you for the only science fiction series that truly grants us a glimpse of the ineffable wonder of the universe. I continue to fight for it, and for you.
hi joe
thank you for your wonderful insights, i am an avid fan of Stargate,and really miss universe..any chance it could be reprieved,have just finished reading a stunning script for a virtual series of stargate universe, the writing is awesome,it really fires the imagination for the 3rd series.hope you and your followers enjoy this as much as i did
heres the link to it
[edit – Even though Stargate is no longer in production, I hold out hope that some day, Brad or Robert may get the opportunity to finish the story they started with a dedicated movie – or two! Out of respect for that possibility, I’m going to continue to make this a fanfic free blog. Nothing personal; simply protecting myself legally.[
take care,lots of luv , respect
Hi Joseph,
I came to know you through your work with SGU. I was a fan of Stargate Atlantis but I never much paid attention to who was producing the show. That is sad to say, because now I realize there are many people who work hard to make a quality show and that the people involved certainly make a difference in the final product.
I’m writing today because I feel I need to express how much I miss Stargate Universe. I was an early adopter and was hooked from the start. Frankly, I’m having a tough time accepting and adopting any other science fiction show because to me, after SGU, it simply isn’t real enough. I know that sounds odd, but I really never had to suspend disbelief that whatever happened to the crew of Destiny, it seemed completely plausible. It was done that well.
I’m not sure I can distill exactly what made SGU special, but I’m sure that is because it is/was a composite of everyone involved with the show. Thanks for everything that you did to make SGU such a gem, and I remain hopeful that someday the series finds a new home and production renews.
Best Regards,
Jon
Dear Joseph,
“Most of all, Stargate Universe gives us a sense of wonder. It is more than space opera. It is the only television series actually about the challenges of space travel and the majesty of the cosmos. It is a reminder that our destiny is to reach for the stars. If there exists any action that could demonstrate Netflix’s desire to serve not merely itself but also the benefit of mankind, it is the revival of Stargate Universe.” Thus Captain Kurt speaks to Netflix CEO Reed Hastings in the 4th episode of “The Cancellation Effect,” my animated sci-fi web series that strives to do for SGU what Popeye did for spinach.
Making a one-man animated web series is both immensely challenging and immensely rewarding. Writing the script, setting up camera shots, specifying every gesture, editing the scenes together, cutting the ones that don’t work, adding sound effects and music–these things give me an even greater appreciation for the infinitely more complex and polished series I’m trying to save.
Here’s episode 4, in which Kurt and Speck travel to the “real” world to plead to Mr. Hastings for SGU’s revival:
And here’s episode 3, in which our heroes voyage to the twilight of mankind in the 22nd century, where SGU’s cancellation has caused a zombie apocalypse:
I hope you and your readers enjoy these episodes, and that they help in fans’ efforts to revive Stargate Universe. As always, thank you for this space in your blog, and for SGU. Now…I’m off to work on episode 5!
I thought both movies were excellent. I agree with the fact that the third movie should be about a global finding connecting us to something “Life-Altering”. I also found it very good writing in the script to hook viewers when they found the book of secrets. You can tell the emotion of each viewer wanted to know if there was anything on area 51 or what really happend with the assasination
Dear Joseph,
“Behold the M31 galaxy, Andromeda, comprised of a trillion stars. 2.5 million light years from Earth, its mysteries beckon across the vast intergalactic gulf. Such distances are the measure of the masterpiece that is Stargate Universe. The cosmos is its canvas. Galaxies, its brush strokes. Stars, its palette.” So Captain Kurt tells a television network executive in episode 5 of The Cancellation Effect, my web series that aims to bring back Stargate Universe.
Creating the (primitive) visual effects for this episode gave me an inkling of the superhuman efforts that Mark Savela and his team must have expended to create the immensely more detailed, realistic, and beautiful effects for Stargate Universe. I spent over two days making a teleportation effect that lasts five seconds onscreen.
For anyone who wants to watch the series from the beginning, here’s the official playlist:
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL454CE3D37F00B6A4
As always, thank you for this space in your blog, and for SGU. My fight for the series, and all who created it, has only just begun.
Hello,
I just saw the end of season 2 of SGU … words fail me … Is there really was no hope of one day seeing a movie or a final episode that would close dramatically and finally the saga SGU? I am French and a fan of Stargate since the very first film came out to the movies with Kurt Russell and it makes me sick that all ends here, at the end of this season 2. This saga deserves a great end, breathtaking. Can we do anything? I weigh my words, I’m a lover, a lover and a fan of this series.
What was supposed to find the crew of Destiny in the cosmic microwave background? What was this famous structure? That was so superior to the people behind this structure? I want to know everything, I want to know this.
Thank you in advance for your reply.
Please write in French, I’m sick of translating all the time.
Dear Joseph,
“Robots, Time Travel, and the Menace from Space” is now on YouTube! Actually, it’s episode 6 of The Cancellation Effect, my web series devoted to saving Stargate Universe, but in hopes of reaching a larger audience than my fellow SGU fanatics, I’ve disguised the show as a general-interest robot story along the lines of Isaac Asimov’s wonderful tales. Then–surprise!–after six minutes and 25 seconds, SGU’s cancellation and its disastrous results for mankind come to the forefront.
The biggest challenge in this episode was battling the Xtranormal software’s speech synthesis algorithms to get smooth, clear output that could almost pass for real human voices. Amazing though the software is, Xtranormal “actors” seldom get a sentence right on the first try; it’s a grueling matter of shuffling word order, substituting synonyms, and rewriting whole sentences. And with every change, I must wait for the engine to re-render the scene before I can hear the results. I now appreciate all the more those masterful flesh-and-blood actors who brought such deep emotion and realism to the characters in SGU.
My fondest wish for 2012 is that some celebrity will notice and blog about The Cancellation Effect, bringing the cause of reviving Stargate Universe the attention it deserves. Meanwhile, I continue to fight for SGU and for you! Happy New Year, and thanks as always for the space you give me here.
Dear Joseph,
“Barack Obama vs Alien Invaders!” is now on YouTube! This is, of course, episode 7 of The Cancellation Effect, my web series devoted to saving Stargate Universe, but I’ve again disguised this fact in hopes of bringing SGU’s plight to the attention of the widest possible audience. Thus, as with “Robots, Time Travel, and the Menace from Space,” it takes a while before the disastrous effects of SGU’s cancellation come to dominate the story.
This is my first episode to abandon computer-synthesized character voices in favor of actual voice recordings. I performed the parts of the announcer, alien captain, and President’s aide myself, and used public-domain clips from a speech by President Obama for his voice. This presented new challenges of me: cutting and splicing audio clips, removing noise, avoiding clipping, modifying voices for the resonant announcer and shrill alien, and adjusting sound levels for consistency. All this makes me appreciate more deeply Stargate Universe’s fabulous sound editing, with its clarity and evocative sound effects. Sometimes I listen to SGU episodes in the background when I’m working on visual effects editing, and they make splendid audio drama. I look forward to not only seeing but also hearing your wonderful Dark Matter stories someday!
Thank you yet again for this space in your blog, and for giving us SGU. I continue my fight for it and for you.
Bonjour , je viens de Belgique et j’aime vraiment votre série , elle apporte
un sentiment de compréhension profond envers des choses que l’on ne comprend pas tout de suite.
Pour ma part cette série se détache vraiment des autres série, et surtout Stargate Universe, j’ai directement remarqué que les personnages, leurs réactions, la manière dont on s’identifie immédiatement a un personnage est différent des autres séries.
J’aimerais vraiment me dire que la prochaine saison ne tardera pas à sortir, mais je sais que cela ne dépend pas de vous. J’aimerais juste savoir si la fin de stargate universe à sonné ou bien qu’elle a une chance de sortir prochainement ?
Je suis persuadé que le faite de ne pas prolongé la série en s’arrêtant a la deuxième saison est une erreur , depuis que j’ai 7 ans je regarde stargate et d’années en années les environnements, les scénarios, les acteurs n’ont fait
que devenir meilleur ! un troisième volet a la série stargate universe serais vraiment important pour tous les fans comme moi qui ont suivit cette série depuis plusieurs années .. je sais que cela ne doit pas être de vôtre faute et je sais aussi que ce que j’écrit n’aura aucune importance .. mais si il vous restait encore un espoir de sortir la saison 3 de stargate universe je serais derrière vous ^^ même si je ne vaut rien , je veux juste dire par là que ayant appris que vous vous étiez “battu” pendant plusieurs mois pour sauver la série qui m’a accompagné tout au long de ma vie, ainsi que celle de milliers de personnes ,
UN GRAND MERCI !!
Dear Joseph,
On this day when so many television commercials are unveiled, it seems appropriate to fill you in on my own ongoing campaign of “commercials” aimed at convincing Netflix to revive Stargate Universe. These brief videos parody Apple’s classic “Get a Mac” ads from a few years back. I’ve created four so far.
Netflix vs Network TV:
Netflix vs Amazon Prime:
Netflix vs Red Box:
Netflix vs Stargate Party:
The official playlist for the campaign, which always contains all “Netflix vs” installments produced so far, resides here:
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC709F0BE33E3CA16
The latest video, released today, references the Netflix Parties we Stargate fans have begun holding occasionally on Netflix’s facebook page. For 24 hours or so, we dominate the Netflix wall with pro-Stargate links and photos, as well as appeals for SGU’s revival. (We’re talking scores of SGU fans making hundreds of posts.) As I see it, Netflix is the ONLY corporation with its own database of customer statistics debunking the myth of SGU’s unpopularity, a large enough distribution channel to be the exclusive carrier of the show, an existing streaming library of everything Stargate–over 350 TV shows and movies!–and the financial resources to produce new episodes. Netflix is a sleeping giant that just needs a bit of prodding to wake up and realize that the Stargate franchise is a currently untapped gold mine. Thus I’m putting all my eggs in the Netflix basket.
My biggest challenge in making these commercial parodies is one of editing. Commercials strive for maximum impact in minimum time. I have kept the length of every one of them under a minute, and tried to stay near 30 seconds. It all makes me better appreciate the difficulties you and your team must have faced, ensuring that every week’s episode of SGU would exactly fit the allotted time–no less, no more.
As always, thank you for this space in your blog, and for giving us SGU. I continue my fight for it and for you.
Hey Joe!
I guess I’m really beginning to accept that there will be no Stargate Atlantis movie. Though rumours have been floating around that you’ve had the script completed for a long time, its been confirmed, for a while, that they’ve indefinitely shelved the movie. What a disappointment! I don’t suppose there’s any possibility you’re fighting that for us, are you?
Dear Joseph,
As you probably know, YouTube SGU tributes are a dime a dozen. People throw together some shots of space battles, slap on an unrelated music track, and upload. I decided to do something completely different, re-performing one of the Beatles’ most famous songs with lyrics altered to fit SGU, and with clips painstakingly chosen to precisely match the song’s content and timing:
I’m no match for Ringo, but I’m still pretty sure you won’t be able to get “We all live in the Starship Destiny” out of your head after you see this. And, being a producer, you can surely appreciate the weeks of intense effort that assembling this video required. Such is my devotion to the masterpiece you created.
Thank you once again for this space in your blog, and for giving us SGU. My fight for it and for you continues.
Blake, thanks for your tireless effort to try convincing sufficiently capable media firms to revive SGU, despite the futility of it all. This whole situation reminds me so much of Star Trek TOS, how the show was canceled due to the erroneous perception that it wasn’t popular enough. True, there were other factors afoot that might have resulted in a rather mediocre 4th season, delaying the appearance of Star Trek TMP movie and the TNG series. But, it was a different time and a very different circumstance from the one facing the Stargate franchise. The Stargate series was hugely appreciated by a large fan base. We have the Internet as a means of expressing our wishes, and there’s no mistake that a very large number of people are upset about SGU being canceled, but… not large enough.
The show had its problems from many angles, the worst of which was behind the scenes. Some say it was dead from the start. There was no “renewal” for the 2nd season, as it was originally contracted for 2 seasons. There were many conflicts between production staff. It’s a miracle we got what we did. At least, that’s the word on the street.
Anyway, the key actors have moved on. Given how tenuous the show was to begin with, I think it would be next to impossible to convince the fan base that it would be a show worth watching again with someone as critical as Robert Carlyle missing from the cast. He had such a significant imprint on the feel of the show. Without him, you can forget it.
So, it appears to be time to move on, sad to say. I have no hope of a revival of SG-U. However, I do have hopes that the franchise will be picked up again with a whole new scenario. Maybe something that would dovetail with Destiny at some point in the future (it would be empty, the crew having been removed by an alien race with little trace as to what happened to them).
Hey Joe,
always wanted an exec prod who approved of walks on the beach, books, SF, haute cuisine AND world domination. A rare and cherishable combination! The weaponry request… still playing Lazer Quest, eh? My team can whup yours – I just arm my daughters and watch the carnage. No, that’s not actually true… I arm my daughters and get the role of a Runner. You think Wraith are heartless killers? No contest, trust me.
BTW, I see you’re currently reading about Renaissance Italy – have you read Niccolo Macchiavelli? “Before all else, be armed.” My youngest daughter has been enjoying herself lately working for him as a cold-blooded killer while playing ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’. Now that’s a sentence I honestly never expected to be writing…
We have some of the most awesome beaches in the UK here in Northumberland, if you don’t mind being constantly bitch-slapped by the wind off the North Sea, and it’s possible to take a stroll that starts a bit north of Newcastle, drops by one of the best fish and chip bars in the world, swings by Lindisfarne and ends over the border into Scotland. My greyhound is looking faint at the very thought of walking that far, but she’s a sand hog in truth – point her at a beach and she’s very quickly a dot on the horizon.
I have raised my girls as they should go – we’re all huge Stargate fans. Good work, Mr M, and thanks!
You could do worse than hire the entire Rann clan as fans/ruthless laser-gun toting killers/foodies/beach bums. World domination a mere detail. ;P
All the best,
Sue Rann
Good evening, I would like to know why it is not written a book about the end of Stargate Universe? Would be a great way to make known the end of a wonderful series with millions of fans around the world.
With an Italian fan
does he read these? Hopefully he does, I was just curious are those books that are meant to follow up after atlantis really cannon with queen death? I wasnt huge fan of them or should we just accept them for now until a follow up?
Also whats the attitude towards fan animation tributes or fanfiction animation or will MGM ultimately be the ones that pull the plug on those?
But hope all is well with whatever you doing after stargate ^_^!
mr joseph please check out this idea
as well and the accompaning youtube video
Hey Brandon,
Thanks for this. Even though I’m no longer working on Stargate,
I’m avoiding fan fiction and fan ideas. As such, I edited your
post to remove the link.
Best of luck.
Dear Joseph,
Congratulations! As you are likely aware, the Constellation Awards nominations for 2011 have recently been announced, and Stargate Universe received a whopping eight nominations, including at least one nomination in every category for which it qualified. The official list is shown here:
http://constellations.tcon.ca/
It is my honor to report that fellow Stargate fan Kelley Hirst and I both played key roles in accomplishing this. Kelley originally brought the Constellation Awards to fans’ attention at the “Save Future Stargate Travel” page on Facebook, and urged us to nominate SGU. However, due to the complexity of nominating and the lack of direction about exactly who or what we should nominate, nothing came of it until I assembled a list of recommendations that SGU fans could simply cut-and-paste into the online forms:
http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=217911048298535
Note that the nominations shown on the Constellation Awards page exactly match my recommendations, except that only my first recommendation from each of the last three categories is included. (I presume the judges disallowed multiple nominations for the same series in those categories.)
Through further Facebook posts and a Facebook “event”, Kelley and I urged SGU fans to nominate using my list. However, we had no idea–until now!–whether we succeeded.
Best wishes for the final awards! I will of course encourage the fans to vote for SGU. Regardless of the outcome, SGU’s strong showing in the nominations more than a year after its cancellation is a testament to its excellence and the continuing dedication of its fans.
As always, thank you for this space in your blog, and for giving us the greatest science fiction series of all time. We continue our fight for it and for you!
Dear Joseph,
It’s been a delight reading all four issues (so far) of Dark Matter. While I miss the hard science fiction that Stargate Universe presented–stories hinging on astronomical phenomena like binary pulsars and blue supergiants–Dark Matter is nonetheless superbly crafted space opera. I hope Dark Horse opts to continue it, or that it becomes the storyboard for a TV series pilot.
“Interview with a Starship Captain” is Episode 8 of The Cancellation Effect, my web series devoted to saving Stargate Universe. It’s online here:
While presenting his arguments for SGU’s revival, Captain Kurt praises the show’s frugality as “epic space science fiction with the budget of average cable TV drama.” Indeed, the more times I watch SGU, the more deeply I admire its writers’ genius in overcoming the series’ budgetary limitations–their ability to make its audience feel as if all of time and space are available for its adventures. As Henri Matisse said, “a large part of the beauty of a picture arises from the struggle which an artist wages with his limited medium.” That’s a part of SGU’s beauty that no other series can match.
As always, thank you for for this space in your blog, and for giving us the cosmos for the same price as the mundane. We continue our fight for SGU and for you!
Hello Joye
I m sorry for my english, but i just want you know, that you was writting the best serials in history, i loved stargate atlantis….
Is some possibitie that be some film or meybe next episode ?
Dear Joseph Mallozzi, I just would like to thank you so much for all your contribution to the Stargate Franchise, Stargate Universe the latest installment is beyond perfection. Please keep the torch alive….
Hi Mr Mallozzi first of all its nice to meet you. I have to say Stargate is my favorite SG1 i have more than just like it i was 14 -15 years old when i watched the first movie and now i am 28 and i watched the 10 season and then Atlantis was amazing all the 5 season. I was very excited when i heard Stargate Universe will come but the first season was very boring and i was disappointed but i watched it and than came the second season witch was the same until the middle of the season where i felt okay its going in the good way but than they stopped it.I have the feeling MGM has no taste of good sci-fi after stargate fully close the doors i had to watch something else Visitors was a good series from the begining but after the second season they closed it down..Why they closing down all the good scifi movies?. Can you tell me is there any chance that i can see one more stargate season or dvd? I heard there will be a stargate game but still not ready.
hello
Why have stopped production of stargate universe?? We are absolute fans and we do not understand why so many series never ends … Another question of money, but nobody thinks of us who remain on our hunger!
this is disgusting why start a series if you are not able to finish it, you only think of money and the money still has not your fans
Hello French fans want to know if Stragate was going to have a suite as we French fans do not want Stargate stops. Here is a good example: http://www.stargate-fusion.com/forum-stargate/index.php
Hi, Anthony! How would you like to help make Season 3 of SGU happen? We Stargate fans worldwide know that our friends in France have just seen the end of season 2 and are clamoring for more. A great way to send a clear message that you want more SGU is to vote for it in the Constellation Awards:
http://constellations.tcon.ca/
We’ve created a Facebook Event for voting for SGU here:
http://www.facebook.com/events/205797526202559
I’ve written step-by-step instructions for TCON registration and voting here:
http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=268312806591692
And yes, non-Canadians can vote by joining the TCON Promotional Society first. It’s a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of science fiction–a worthy cause in itself.
David Hewlett saved the Destiny sets from destruction; most of the actors are still available; Forbes, The Street, Giant Freakin’ Robot, and TiVo have all spoken out in favor of SGU’s revival; SGU’s online viewership has been impressive; and the fans have fought tenaciously for its return. SGU therefore stands a better chance than did most other series that have been cancelled and revived.
So please vote for SGU in the Constellation Awards and encourage your friends to do so! You and they could very well make the difference.
Merci beaucoup!
Blake Linton
Since me favorite sci-fi shows keep getting cancelled by narrow minded, greedy studios, I keep asking myself why does never anybody care to take the ideas of the shows, write books and continue or complete the stories in books. Stargate Universe would have deserved it. Shows like Terra Nova, Surface, Invasion, V, The Event, Hero, Flashforward, Blade the series, Terminator the Sarah Conner Chronicles, Babylon 5 etc.. All great shows that cry for someone to tell the disappointed fans how things ended. I would so much love to hear if the SG Universe guys got to the end of the Galaxy. Maybe you as an insider could share some thoughts.
Thanks
Andre
Dear Mr. Malozzi,
did u ever hear from the Kickstarter project?
If not, please take a look at this site, where some peeps use kickstarter to produce a sci-fi movie:
http://news.slashdot.org/story/12/05/27/1227256/star-trek-luminaries-behind-the-fastest-funded-film-project-on-kickstarter
http://www.kickstarter.com/
THIS could be a way to bring back SGU.
To give the millions of fans out there a end of that epic story.
I´m pretty sure this could work, and if big companys see that people are willing to pay …they´ll jump on that train.
U could offer the fans that spend a special anount of cash a coupon on amazon 4 a dvd maybe….
Please think about it, cause many fans out there are really pissed about those big company decisions to end some shows WITHOUT doing at least a final movie to end the story.
Sincerely
Sascha
